It has long been said that the United States has benefited from its geography, when it comes to national security. This is attributed to vast oceans to the east and west, along with friendly neighbors to the north and south. The same can be said for Canada, with Santa being a pretty friendly neighbor to the north, one would assume. Do to this shared advantage, which might be less true today, Canada and the United States have long worked together to secure "Fortress North America". From the defensive structures of NORAD and NATO, to the continued force projection taking on some of the biggest challenges of the day, these two countries have collaborated in a number of military spaces. While it would take too long to dive into all the shared challenges that these countries face on the global stage, we did take a special opportunity to speak with the Canadian Defense Attaché to the United States about several of the biggest issues of the day. Major General  Michel-Henri St-Louis of the Canadian Armed Forces graciously gave his time to talk about NATO, NORAD, Ukraine, and the current state of Canada's military and integration with American forces. With a thirty-plus year military career, the Major General has held many high level commands across multiple theatres, as he has helped to ensure Canada upholds its international security obligations. This episode tackles important questions, from what challenges do the armed forces face in terms of readiness, what support has the Canadian government provided to Ukraine, and how our adversaries actively work to undermine important foreign policy conversations here in the US and Canada. This fascinating and unique conversation provides access to top level military thinking, accessible for all.Major-General Michel-Henri St-Louis is an infantry officer from le Royal 22e Régiment, currently serving as the Defence Attaché to the United States. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, he and his family moved to the south shore of Montreal in 1978 during the time of the Sandinista Revolution. Before assuming his current responsibilities at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, MGen St-Louis was the Acting Commander of the Canadian Army. This followed his appointment as the Canadian Army's Training Authority. Preceding this, he served as the Commander of Joint Task Force - IMPACT in the Middle East for more than a year (mid 2019 – mid 2020). Other previous commands and appointments include Deputy Commanding General for Operations of America's First Corps (I Corps - US Army) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (2017-2019), command of 5e Groupe-Brigade Mécanisé du Canada (2015-2017), as well as commander of the last Canadian Battle-Group in charge of combat operations in Panjwai, Kandahar (2010-2011).Through his service he and his family have lived in Saint-Jean, Québec City, Oromocto, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Washington, D.C., Washington State and Kingston (Ontario). He has deployed on 6 different missions, to such places as Srebrenica (Bosnia), Rastevic (Croatia), Zgon (Bosnia), Kabul, Kandahar (Afghanistan) and the OP IMPACT Middle East area or operations (Kuwait-Iraq-Jordan-Lebanon).He has attended the US PINNACLE and CAPSTONE Leadership Programs, followed seminars at the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NDU) and the US Army War College. He is a graduate of the National War College (Washington, D.C., U.S.A.), the Canadian Forces College, le Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean, the Royal Military College in Kingston, and the Canadian Army Command and Staff College. His three Masters degrees have focused on the study of war, defence and strategy. He served as chief of staff at the operational level in the 1st Canadian Air Division. In addition, he served three times at the strategic level with the Director General of Strategic Planning, within the Canadian Army Staff and with the Strategic Joint Staff.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the sixty-third episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Deputy Commanding General of United States Army Forces Command, Lieutenant General Stephen Smith.   Forces Command is the largest United States Army command and provider of expeditionary, regionally engaged, campaign-capable land forces to combatant commanders. FORSCOM trains and prepares a combat ready, globally responsive total force in order to build and sustain readiness to meet combatant command requirements. The vision of Forces Command is to provide combat ready and globally responsive total Army forces that are well led, disciplined, trained, and expeditionary that will win in a complex world. Its organizations are expeditionary, campaign focused, and tailorable to provide combatant commanders the required capabilities to be decisive across the range of military operations. They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Freedom” and the motto of “Freedom's Guardian.”   In this episode we discuss the necessity for our leaders and their formations to receive realistic, rigorous, and relevant training for combat across multiple domains as it's key for success on tomorrow's battlefields. Specifically, we look at the battalion through corps echelons requirement for such training as it is essential to prepare soldiers for the complexities of modern warfare across multiple domains. Battalions should focus on integrating small unit tactics with real-time intelligence and cyber capabilities, while brigades emphasize combined arms operations and interoperability with joint and coalition forces. Corps-level training should prioritize strategic planning, large-scale maneuver coordination, and multi-domain command and control to ensure dominance in a contested environment.   In testifying to Congress to justify the expense of a large-scale maneuver just prior to our entry into WWII, General George Marshall stated, “My God, Senator, that's the reason I do it. I want the mistakes down in Louisiana, not over in Europe.” Today we continue this legacy of realistic, rigorous, and relevant training at the DoD's combat training centers, such as the Joint Readiness Training Center. At home-station, this is done through the divisions managing their intensive training cycles and at the battalion and brigade echelons through becoming predictable, through synchronizing the warfighting functions, and set the conditions for subordinate units to succeed.   Part of S01 “The Leader's Laboratory” series.   Don't forget to check-out FORSCOM's social media pages, their handles are ‘U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM)' on Facebook, ‘FORSCOM' on X, and ‘US Army FORSCOM' on Instagram.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please check-out our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. One of our goals at this podcast is to preserve the memory of Allied and Coalition forces, so this episode is particularly poignant as we mark the 10th Anniversary of Canada's withdrawal from Afghanistan (which occurred on 12 March). For this episode I am honored to welcome back Major-General Michel-Henri St-Louis, a Canadian Army General who is currently serving as the Canadian Defence Attache to the United States, and a warfighter who served in Afghanistan.Major-General St-Louis is an Infantry officer who holds 3 masters degrees focused on war studies, military history, and strategy and defence. He has deployed on 5 overseas missions including Bosnia, Croatia, Afghanistan, and the Middle East.Notable highlights of the General's career include being the Commander of Operation Impact; Commander of the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Center; Deputy Commanding General for Operations for the US Army's First Corps; and serving for an extended period as the acting Commander of the Canadian Army and Chief of the Army Staff.Major-General St-Louis has attended the U.S. Capstone Leadership Program and is a graduate of the National War College in Washington, DC; and he is also an Officer within the Legion of Merit in the United States.I have had the privilege to meet the General on numerous occasions over the years, and I know him to be a kind, professional and passionate leader who genuinely cares about the people and mission of the Canadian Army and the Canadian Armed Forces in which he serves.Major-General St-Louis' first tour in Afghanistan was in February 2006 as part of the Strategic Advisory Team (SAT), which brought together a team of strategic advisors for Afghanistan. His second deployment in Afghanistan was from November 2010 to July 2011, where he commanded the last Canadian battle group that conducted combat operations in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar Province. The focus of this episode is to chat about the General's experiences in Afghanistan, reflect on this milestone anniversary, and chat about lessons learned. We want to thank Major-General St-Louis for the time he extended to us and we thank him for his continued service to the country. We also thank and recognize all those that served in uniform in Afghanistan, and we pay respect to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. You are not forgotten.Similarly, we want to thank the Afghan people who sided with Coalition Forces in hope of a better life, and in particular those who fought side-by-side with Coalition Forces, and their families, many of whom live in fear today. We have a special treat for our audience, today's guests are all former COGs at the JRTC, LTG Sean Bernabe, MG David Doyle, BG David Gardner, BG Jason Curl, and COL Andrew Saslav. This is our first annual Large Scale Combat Operations Symposium and what we hope to become a routine, annual event. The event was designed to encourage dynamic dialogue, offer insights to future Leaders, and promote the Joint Readiness Training Center as a whole.   LTG Bernabe was the COG from 2016-2017 and is now the Commanding General for III Corps. MG Doyle was the COG from 2017-2018 and is now the Chief of Staff for United States Central Command. BG Gardner was the COG from 2018-2019 and is now the Commanding General for the Joint Readiness Training Center. BG Curl was the COG from 2020-2021 and is the Deputy Commanding General of Operations for the 10th Mountain Division. COL Saslav was the COG from 2021-2022 and is the Deputy Commanding General of Operations for the 82nd Airborne Division.   Students and faculty from the Maneuver Center of Excellence submitted questions to the team, which were then synthesized by COL Hardman and presented to the COG panel. This was part of the Maneuver Warfighter Conference in September 2022.   In this episode they discuss the evolution of training provided to brigade combat teams and the preparation for conducting large scale combat operations across multiple domains. As the Army transitions from the BCT being the primary effort to the division becoming the unit of action, some of the long-term trends are examined as the training at the JRTC shifted from mission rehearsal exercises to decisive action training environment (DATE) exercises focused on LSCO. A major topic of discussion is the distinction between deficiencies and military activities that are simply challenging tasks, which will always be points-of-friction for warfighters.   Part of S01 “The Leader's Laboratory” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please checkout our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.

General Robert Brown (USA-Ret.) is an experienced commander who has led at every level, from platoon through Army Service Component Command. Serving as Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific, General Brown led the Army’s largest service component command responsible for 106,000 Soldiers across the Indo-Pacific Region before his September 2019 retirement. General Brown is a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant. His assignments took him across the globe including deployments in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and two combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before U.S. Army Pacific, he commanded the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; and the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, Georgia. He also served as Chief of Staff for U.S. Army Europe; Deputy Commanding General for the 25th Infantry Division; Commander, 1st Brigade (Stryker) 25th Infantry Division; Commander, 2nd Battalion 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division; the Joint Staff, J-8; Army Staff, Strategy and War Plans Division G3/5/7 in the Pentagon; Aide-de-Camp, Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army; Executive Officer to Commander, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command; Assistant Professor and Deputy Director, Center for Enhanced Performance, West Point; and Infantry Assignment Officer, Human Resources Command. General Brown holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Education from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies (Distinguished Graduate) from the National Defense University. General Brown retired after more than 38 years of service. He was a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) before becoming President and CEO in October 2021. In today’s podcast, General Brown discusses how the Army can reach the next generation of Americans, the creation of Multi-Domain Task Forces, challenges in the Pacific AOR, and the importance of the Human Dimension. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our discussion: AUSA, like many other thought-leading organizations, has found itself needing to adjust to changing demographicsand has focused its outreach on connecting the Army with the community. Army bases have become heavily fortified in the post-9/11 environment, making it more difficult to reach that next generation of potential recruits. With “community connectors” and “community partners,” AUSA has the opportunity to tell the Army story and make those critical links. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is more aggressive nowthan in the last several decades. Relying on his experience as the Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC), GEN Brown believes the combination of an aggressive and over-confident CCP could be dangerous and potentially lead to accidental conflict. In the Indo-Pacific, it will be a Joint fight andevery domain matters. China’s Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) is powerful and can repel U.S. Forces at significant distance. To combat thi

After an impressive military career, Craig Whelden decided he wanted to give back by sharing all he'd learned about leadership with the next generation of leaders.   Craig had a long career in the United States military, serving in various positions. He was Commander Marine Forces Pacific for bass operations, Deputy Commanding General, US Army Pacific. And he served as the first Chief of Staff for a four-star Navy-led Joint Task Force, and much more.  Craig believed the best way to pass on his knowledge and experience would be through speaking engagements. But he soon discovered that to become a sought-after speaker, he'd need to write a book.  Creating a True Leadership Handbook  After pursuing the idea of a ghostwriter, Craig finally decided to write his book himself. After working hard on it for weeks, he sent his draft manuscript to a book coach.   The coach gave Craig no-holds-barred feedback, telling him that he'd written a memoir, not a leadership book, and that he had some rewriting to do!  Craig took his medicine and went back to do some heavy editing. He then worked with the coach to edit and structure his book. Craig's coach asked him which were the most important chapters in the book - and from there character became chapter one, trust chapter two, and onwards.   Craig's book, Leadership: The Art of Inspiring People to Be Their Best, was released two years ago, and has allowed Craig to accomplish what he set out to do.  “I wrote this book to help me get on stage to tell my story to people to help the next generation in leadership and life lessons, that's the reason I wrote it,” he tells show host Josh Steimle.   Leadership is now an award-winning international bestseller, with dozens of five-star reviews on Amazon. Not least, it's opened up the speaking circuit to Craig, which in turn has boosted book sales.   Want To Be a Speaker? Have a Demo Video  Craig began seeking out speaking engagements by finding a couple of companies that send out leads for speaking gigs. He signed up with one, and so every month he receives a list of conferences that are occurring in the next eight, nine months or so.   He also sends out a solicitation email, which basically introduces him, tells recipients a little bit about him, and his web address.   Craig advises: “Step one is you have to have a pretty darn good foundation with a website. And on that website, if you want to be a speaker, you better have a demo video. Because if you don't have a demo that's pretty good, people are just going to move on.”  Craig's website has testimonials about his book, his speaking engagements, and about me section, a blog, and lots of information about leadership.  Leadership Book Opens Door To Speaking Gigs  Craig delivered his very  first presentation on stage in Omaha, Nebraska, in late 2019 to an audience of 250, for a financial management firm.   “The firm bought 250 copies of my book, I signed every one of them the night before I gave my presentation. And they gave the book out to every attendee. So that has sort of been the model that I've been approaching as I talked to people about speaking engagements,” explains Craig.  “I say ‘I can give you a discount on my book if you want to buy it in bulk for every attendee'. In probably 80 to 90% of my speaking engagements, they have purchased the book for every attendee.”  “I gave probably four, maybe five presentations before the lockdown let a year ago in March,” he recalls.   “The last presentation I gave live was the Los Angeles Fire Department Leadership Academy. With 50 students, they bought 50 copies of my book, and they've incorporated it into the curriculum,” enthuses Craig.  “They asked me to come back and be a regular speaker, which I had planned to do, until COVID shut everything down. So I haven't been back out to Los Angeles yet, until things settle down.”  From that point forward in March, 2020, Craig began seeking online opportunities. For example, last month, he presented to a graduate course in leadership at Emory University in Atlanta. They bought 42 copies of his book, one for each student. Part of the students'  assignment was to take notes on Craig's Zoom and read the book as well.   He delivered an online presentation to a medical group, and at the end of the presentation gave his contact information, CraigWhelden.com so attendees could purchase his book online.  Next month, Craig plans to begin doing in-person events. “I've had both my COVID shots and I feel pretty comfortable that I won't get infected and I won't infect anybody else. And because an event in Gatlinburg, Tennessee is a medical group, I'm pretty comfortable they will take the appropriate precautions as well.”  LINKS  TwitterLinkedInCraigWhelden.com  SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. Before he departed Fort Irwin to become the current Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division, Major General Jeffrey Broadwater and I sat down in his office to chat about leadership, combat, the National Training Center, and how to personally manage the highs and lows of command. As a company commander in 2007, I was fortunate to be attached to 3-7 Cavalry as then LTC Broadwater led the squadron in counterinsurgency operations in the Adamiyah area of Baghdad, Iraq. As a clear indicator of his leadership approach, MG Broadwater treated us like one of his own organic companies. He was inclusive, empowering, and led from a coaching mindset…a characteristic that continues today and that you can get a true sense of in this chat. MG Broadwater is an Armor Officer and proud graduate of the University of Kentucky, has served in the 82nd Airborne, the 1st Infantry Division, the 3rd Infantry Division, commanded 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Riley, and served as the Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Armored Division. Notably though, are his three assignments to the National Training Center. Through 70 rotations as an Observer/Coach/Trainer and as a rotational unit, MG Broadwater has more time in the Fort Irwin desert than just about anyone. As a LTC, he coached Armored and Infantry Battalions then led the Brigade O/C team. As a COL, he commanded Operations Group, mentoring brigade commanders and shaping the conduct of NTC rotations. And most recently, he served as the Commanding General of NTC and Fort Irwin, responsible for the Fort Irwin tenant units and every echelon of support for NTC rotations. Brigadier General Ross Coffman, Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, joins The Military Leader Podcast to discuss the state of Army leaders after 16 years of war, how the National Training Center stretches brigade combat teams toward readiness, and why the best way to take care of Soldiers is to train them for combat. As commander of 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, BG Coffman launched the Ready First Podcast to flatten the leader development across the brigade and give the leaders an entirely new medium through which to engage and grow. Then in 2016, he served as Commander of the Operations Group at the National Training Center, overseeing the premier training experience for brigade combat teams across the Army.
