We're taking a trip to West Covina this episode, as we talk about season 1 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. So instead of having an in-person Group Hang, start up a Netflix Party and join us in discussing one of our favorite musical TV shows! For the most part spoiler-free, though we have a spoiler section starting from 29:17. -- All four seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are currently available on Netflix. You can watch all the music videos from the show (in their explicit versions) on Rachel Bloom's YouTube channel. And you can also see some of the possible inspirations and references in each musical number. Rachel Bloom's memoir, I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are, is out now and you can listen to an excerpt from the audiobook, where she sings from a script written about how she fell in love with musicals. Watch as Lin-Manuel Miranda joins Gabrielle Ruiz for a slightly modified version of "Women Gotta Stick Together". As mentioned by Cindy, see just how many people on the street would say yes to having sex with Paul Rudd. The song "Heavy Boobs" mentions just how many objects can fit under her boobs, and Rachel Bloom proves it to be true. For those that love Santino Fontana as much as we do, he can be seen in his upcoming "live" concert with Seth Rudetsky on February 21. -- Music featured in this episode: (Note that the albums linked here are the explicit versions, though clean versions exist as well.) For our first episode of 2021, LLW connected with Kiley Reid, author of Such a Fun Age, the smash-hit novel long-listed for the 2020 Man Booker Prize. In our chat, Kiley discusses the novel’s themes of storytelling and social media, plus how she uses the writing process to get inside her character’s heads, why she chose the multi-layered title and the limitations of the anti-racist reading list. Our chat was mostly spoiler-free, but we do discuss the novel’s ending from 23:05 to 26:16 and again from 27:38 to 28:17, so skip those parts if you haven't read the book yet. It was fantastic to connect with Kiley on the eve of the UK paperback release of Such a Fun Age, which is out now in all good bookstores. Later, we chat about questionable-yet-entertaining Netflix festive films The Princess Switched 2: Switch Again and Christmas on the Square, which we watched together via Netflix Party over the holiday period. We hope everyone’s staying safe and well as we begin the New Year and we’ll be back with a new episode next month.

If your pandemic holiday needs something a lot more interesting than a video chat, you'll want to check it out. Plus, an Advent resource from author Jane Rubietta, and a secret discount offer on one of my books hidden in the episode. It's a must-listen episode! (Article contains affiliate links. This means that when you click a link and make a purchase, I might receive a small commission from that purchase.) Inspired Life Psst! I encourage you to listen to the audio on this episode. I have a special offer for one of my books hidden in the episode. It's like an Easter egg hunt . . . or a Christmas egg hunt. Listen on your favorite platform to discover how to get a great deal when you purchase Christmas gifts for friends and family! We're about to get into some fantastic ideas for how we can do Christmas in new ways. But since this Christmas probably isn't like past years, it's important to first acknowledge what we have lost and how we feel about it. And then we need to figure out how to make the most of it. If we stay stuck in what we have lost and how we feel about it, we miss out on opportunities to find joy and blessing. Change can be good. The other thing that I think is important to mention is a little bit of a lecture. Some of us are acting as if it isn't fair that we won't be together with our loved ones at the holidays. Let me remind you of how this has worked for many holidays for some families: Military families often have an empty chair at the table because someone is stationed overseas. Missionaries and expatriates spend almost every holiday away from extended family. Some families are large and spread out. So if this is the first Christmas in your life that you aren't able to be with the people you usually are with, I encourage you to stretch a little and put yourself in the shoes of someone who is never home for Christmas. And then, find a way to support and encourage that person or family. Use your disappointment as a springboard to bless someone else. That's repurposing Christmas! Now, let's move on to the ideas! @import url(https://michellerayburn.com/wp-content/plugins/siteorigin-panels/css/front-flex.min.css); #pgc-w5fbf269d39840-0-0 { width:100%;width:calc(100% - ( 0 * 40px ) ) } #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0 , #pl-w5fbf269d39840 .so-panel , #pl-w5fbf269d39840 .so-panel:last-child { margin-bottom:0px } #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0.panel-no-style, #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0.panel-has-style > .panel-row-style { -webkit-align-items:flex-start;align-items:flex-start } #panel-w5fbf269d39840-0-0-0> .panel-widget-style { padding:0px 20px 0px 20px } @media (max-width:780px){ #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0.panel-no-style, #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0.panel-has-style > .panel-row-style { -webkit-flex-direction:column;-ms-flex-direction:column;flex-direction:column } #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0 > .panel-grid-cell , #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0 > .panel-row-style > .panel-grid-cell { width:100%;margin-right:0 } #pg-w5fbf269d39840-0 { margin-bottom:px } #pl-w5fbf269d39840 .panel-grid-cell { padding:0 } #pl-w5fbf269d39840 .panel-grid .panel-grid-cell-empty { display:none } #pl-w5fbf269d39840 .panel-grid .panel-grid-cell-mobile-last { margin-bottom:0px } #panel-w5fbf269d39840-0-0-0> .panel-widget-style { padding:10px 10px 10px 10px } } Life, Repurposed Last week, we had Stephenie Hovland as a guest, and I asked her to share some ideas for ways that people can get creative. She said her family has a tradition of watching Elf every year, but one of her daughters now lives in California, so by using a watch part app, they can still do this. There are several ways to host a watch party. These are just a few of them: This can be done with an app called Watch with Friends.  This can be installed on Apple TV, Roku, or Chrome. Netflix does it via an extension called Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) and everyone has to have a Netflix...

Early Accountability

Our topic on this episode of the Early Accountability Podcast is being aware of the impacts that the holidays can have on mental health. This time of year can be characterized by stress, fatigue, expectations, travel exhaustion, financial strains, isolation, grief, and difficult relationships and interactions with loved ones, and the impacts of COVID-19 on our plans this season only escalate these feelings. Now – more than ever – it is important to be self-aware and take proactive steps to keep yourself happy, reduce stress, and take care of your mental health. Kimi outlines 5 things to try this season to make the most of this “different” holiday season: 1. Allow yourself to feel – Give yourself permission to be where you are right now. 2. Resist the temptation to give into social pressures – For the health of yourself and others, say “no” to events and gatherings that you don’t feel comfortable attending. 3. Enjoy the outdoors – Being outside is a great way to spend time with others in a socially distanced setting and to have a chance to unplug and get grounded in the serenity of nature. 4. Take care of your health – Get plenty of rest and exercise and be conscious of your food and beverage consumption. 5. Find new traditions – If you are not able to spend time in person with your loved ones, take advantage of technology that can help you stay connected: Zoom and Facetime, watching a Netflix Party together, and playing a game over the House Party app are great resources! Above all, know yourself and do what you think is best for yourself and others. Know that this season will not be normal, but do your best to make the most of it and check in with those around you to make sure everyone is doing ok. Finlay sits down with Los Angeles based Actress Emily Tosta. Well known for her roles in #NETFLIX Mayans M.C. (2018),  NETFLIX Party of Five (2020) and Wally’s Wonderland, co-starring Nicholas Cage!As most people looking to make it in the arts can attest, the rise to the top for Emily Tosta wasn’t always sunshine, rainbows and positive affirmations. As a child, she was all too aware of the effects other people’s words can have on you. No stranger to the cruelty of others, she was often taunted by her peers simply for following her dreams.“I’ve been bullied since I was a girl,” she admirably shares. “I was bullied in my country for wanting to pursue acting or for doing theatre in school or for being on commercials.”Tosta’s accomplishments should have been celebrated, but as is the case for most school children seeking to excel, her proudest moments were tainted and used to taunt her, not that the young actress let that stand in her way.“Obviously, now I laugh about it, but it was definitely very sad back in the day. Then coming to this country, it was a culture shock. In school, I wasn’t used to any of the things that the other kids were used to. Even just like switching classes, I didn’t know you had to switch classes!”Looking back fondly at her innocence when first flung into the American education system, she finds humour in her confusion with US customs all those years ago. But at the time, that confusion was used by those around her as fuel to target her. Now, it’s safe to say she’s had the last laugh, and seeks to use those experiences to encourage those in a similar position to rise above.

Back in 2018, Judy and Teresa covered the first 8 episodes of "100 Days My Prince" before DramaFever imploded. We’re getting saucy—even more so than usual?—and dipping into the spreads, schmears, and drizzles we’re treating as essential supplements to our souls as well as our fridge-clearing batches of fried rice. Also! We’re coming at you with a bunch o’ thoughts on how to practice ~friendship~ right now, whether you prefer a postcard or a week-long game.   The linkage:   Condiment for us (and for you): Chinkiang vinegar, seasoned rice vinegar, mirin, Fly by Jing sichuan chili crisp, Marmite, hoisin, Seedible sesame butter, Thai Kitchen curry paste, Iasa hot pepper in olive oil, Tutto Calabria Rose Marina, Mike’s or Red Clay hot honey, Holy Schmitt’s horseradish and horseradish mustard, and (drumroll) Luxardo cherries, which are available in this large-format option.    A couple recipe mentions: sauteed greens with onions and soy sauce and tofu and green beans with chile crisp.    Breaking news alert: grapefruit updates!! We learned about a grapefruit-eating tactic from a YouTube vid (by way of the wonderful Deez Links newsletter), and we both ate up Connie Wang’s article for R29 “Love in the Shape of Cut Fruit.”   Friend activities: texting (or Netflix Party chatting) over a movie, a game of Mafia (magazine covers via Canva quite optional), PowerPoint parties, sending postcards (extra credit if it’s by letter of the alphabet!) or using TouchNote to do so, the Marco Polo app, stoop drop-offs, New Yorker crosswords in partner mode, being a Mystery Reader for a kid, or, for the bold, singing theme songs—or any songs, really—via voice memo.   Voicemails! You wanna leave one? Great: 833-632-5463.   Take our survey, get coupon codes, etc., etc. at claireanderica.com.   Cook up Sun Basket goodness. $35 off your order with the code ATHINGORTWO. Whether it's Netflix Party, Houseparty, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, FaceTime, texting, or even (worst case scenario) making a phone call, there are no shortage of options for staying in touch. Yet many of us feel desperately alone and/or we invest enormous amounts of energy to avoid being alone. But as much as relationships matter, what if learning to be alone is just as essential to becoming the people God has created us to be? How could we learn to lean into our time of forced isolation to be a space where we get to be together with God?
