This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday April 29th, 2020. The U.S. has passed one million cases. In less than 3 months, more Americans have died due to COVID-19 than in all 10 years of the Vietnam War. Coronavirus task force member, Dr. Fauci, said the US could be in for a “bad fall and bad winter” if we aren’t prepared for the return of the virus. Oxford University has begun human testing and is hopeful they may have a vaccine by September, reports CBS News. The President signed an executive order, under the Defense Production Act, to keep meat processing plants open. For the first time and for this year only, movies not released in theaters will be eligible to be nominated for an Academy Award. Russia extended their ban on foreigners entering the country until further notice. It was set to expire Wednesday. Germany has extended their international travel warning through June 14th. France will end their lockdown on May 11th, with a gradual reopening of the country. Vietnam has announced no domestic transmission of the virus for two weeks. The World Bank set aside $195 million for 64 poor countries to help with the fight against the virus, reports The Guardian. In Lithuania, restaurants were allowed to reopen Monday, but only with outdoor seating, reports The Washington Post. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Wednesday April 22nd, 2020. Two deaths in Santa Clara County, California in early February, have been attributed to the virus, autopsies reveal. The deaths on February 6th and 17th are the earliest known in the U.S. Neither victim had been out of the country, transmission was likely “community spread”. Meaning the virus may have been spreading in the U.S. weeks earlier than thought. Antibody tests from a study conducted by USC and the LA County Public Health Department, conclude that more than 320,000 in LA may have been infected, reports CBS news. The Senate passed the $484 billion aid bill, it includes $382 billion for small businesses, $75 billion for hospitals, and $25 billion for testing. The bill heads to the House for a vote. A study done by the Veterans Administration concluded that patients treated with hydroxychloroquine had higher death rates than patients not treated with the drug. The USNS Comfort, docked in New York City, will no longer accept new patients, as the need is no longer there. An executive order, signed by India’s Prime Minster, will make attacks on healthcare workers punishable with 6 months to 7 years in prison. In Spain, The Prime Minister has asked Parliament to extended lockdown restrictions to May 9th, with a “slow and gradual” re-opening after that, reports The Washington Post. There are 33 cases on board an Italian cruise ship, docked in Nagasaki, Japan. 623 total crew members are on board, no passengers. Today’s episode was recorded on Wednesday April 15th as a live webinar conversation between Pei Su, the Executive Director and Co-founder of ACTAsia and myself. It’s unedited and somewhat messy sound-wise but we wanted to get it out as soon as possible. There are a lot of rumors and misinformation getting passed around the globe in terms of China’s wildlife trade and markets: what has been banned, what hasn’t, and what all of it means. In today’s conversation, Pei Su answers many of my questions about what’s happening on the ground in China, what the bans actually mean, and where the many loopholes lie. Pei Su has been on the front lines to create a better world for animals for three decades. She is a wealth of knowledge, a force and an inspiration. In 2011, she co-founded ACTAsia – an organization that’s dedicated to creating change in China through humane education. What that means is that they go into schools and train the teachers to teach a 6-year program called Caring for Life Education. The kids are in the program from ages 6 -12 and they learn animal welfare, empathy toward animals, environmental issues, social welfare, and citizenship. To date, 80,000 kids have gone through Caring For Life and 2,000 teachers have been trained. Pei believes that things won’t really change for animals in China until people start to view them differently – and, the best people for that job are the children – as they will create change for generations to come.  There is also a ton of good information on what’s happening in China on ACTAsia’s website.

President Trump will pause funding for The World Health Organization while a review is conducted. The U.S. is the organizations largest donor. The UN Secretary General was one of many to speak out against President Trump’s decision. The American Medical Association noted that cutting funds to the WHO is “dangerous”. More than 9,000 U.S. health care workers have tested positive for the virus according to the CDC. New York saw a major increase in fatalities. As they updated counts to include people who had not tested positive for the virus, but it was the assumed cause of death. California recorded over 1500 new cases yesterday, their highest daily number. The Governor said the state would be re-opened based on “public health, not politics”, when it was able to do six things: expand testing, protect high risk groups, have enough PPE for future surges, continue to look for therapies and treatments, set social distancing guidelines in schools and businesses and allow reinstatement of stay at home orders if necessary. Maine has extended their state of emergency to May 15th. Cases in Russia continue to rise at an aggressive rate and are nearing 25,000. The Health Ministry in Guatemala relayed that between 50 and 70% of those deported from the U.S. back to Guatemala have tested positive for the virus, according to The Washington Post. The Dubai World Trade Center has been turned in to a 3,000-bed hospital. New Zealand’s Prime Minister will take a 20% pay cut. The believer is made a new creature, meaning his inner man is made new, his inner flesh crucified, and this while the body remains for a while, until it is raised a spiritual body (spiritual meaning the life of God, not immaterial). Being made new, baptized into Christ, we are to be like Him. Our inner man is to be just like His in obedience, character, and virtue.
