Holy feature film, Batman ... one based on the tongue-in-cheek, campy 1960's television series. Watch Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) battle sharks, Catwoman, The Joker and The Riddler on the big screen. Can they try to prevent the bad guys from taking over the world? Stay tuned to the end of this one, because you won't want to miss the announcement we have for you! We find ourselves in a Freaky Friday situation as Jack takes over the 2nd Unit to share a decade-and-a-half long obsession of his: Richard Williams' animated passion project, The Thief and The Cobbler! Never truly finished by Williams and released in a variety of cuts from different companies, this is a must-listen story for anyone even remotely interested in animation (and a heartbreakingly cathartic story for anyone with creative anxiety). Join us for the tale of arguably the longest production cycle in history (sorry, Mad God), the ways people like the Weinsteins absolutely ruin films, and the heights of achievement and acclaim you can reach (and what they can cost). Then, stick around for our thoughts about how this journey makes us think about our own creativity and goals for the podcast and beyond. We ease back into things after our holiday break by doing something new: celebrating our favorite films from last year! 2022 was an excellent year for movies, and we dig into a bunch that we particularly loved (as well as some that we were disappointing), including: Everything Everywhere All At Once The Menu Prey The Batman NOPE Bullet Train WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story X Pearl The Banshees of Inisherin and many more! We also take some time to look at the films we're looking forward to for 2023 (Renfield, Dune 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, M3gan, Scream VI, etc), get into a surprisingly long discussion about the Martin Scorsese and the MCU's moment in film history, and Jack's annual existential artistic crisis and how he manages that. Also, we apologize in advance for our negative opinion of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers. What were your favorite movies from 2022? Let us know on Twitter (@DeRazzledPod) or by email (derazzledpodcast@gmail.com) and we might share your answers in a future episode this season! We brought our dear friend Scott McGrath back on to 1) make each other watch another round of our guilty pleasure films, and 2) make up for the fact that his last guest appearance was for Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas. Scott brought Hackers (1995), Joe brought Gamer (2009), and Jack brought The Flintstones (1994). Jack learns something about how hacking and phone phreaking worked back in the 90s and also hears some other early Internet jargon, we all give Fisher Stevens' skateboarding prowess the appreciation it deserves, Joe causes permanent injury to his friends by uttering an unused working title for his movie, Scott reveals he would probably do whatever Ludacris told him to do, we gleefully revel in Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble nearly getting hanged by an angry mob, and we also lament the tendency of '90s filmmakers to end family movies with terrible musical choices. Get comfy for this one, and let us know what you think by rating and reviewing on iTunes, GoodPods, Spotify, or wherever you're listening. On this episode of The Middle School Mind, we talk about how Son learned the basics of football by playing Madden NFL 22 on XBox One. Many middle school students are not into sports and Son is one of them. However, many kids have to attend sporting events to support their siblings, friends and family. Son's older sister is in the color guard at her high school and she performs during halftime at the home football games. Rather than complaining about going to the games or sitting in the stands bored and not knowing what's going on the field, Father bought Madden NFL 22 on XBox One to teach Son the basics of football. Football is an incredibly complex game. Many people complain that there's more standing around than action in the games. Using Madden as a teaching tool, Father was able to talk Son through the high level basics of football from offense to defense and run plays and passing plays. On this episode, we talk about the following: Son is not a sports kid Madden video game taught Son the basic rules to football We compare the video game with the actual game Did Madden help Son appreciate the game? Video games can be a good learning tool Wii Sports is a classic sports tutorial for novices +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On this episode, we featured our fellow podcaster, The Geeky Dad Podcast. We return to wrap up our coverage of 2017's The Mummy, truly one of the worst performances of Tom Cruise's career. Jacks shares a truly horrendous anecdote about why Steven Spielberg won't work with Cruise anymore (allegedly), we dig into Universal's previous attempts to do Monster Universe crossovers and reveal all the known and rumored casting decisions that would have made up the Dark Universe, Joe goes on a bit of a tirade about the ethics of museum curation, and of course we attempt to fix this mess of a film -- but not before asking the question: Is The Mummy racist? Kick back and enjoy a tall glass of that awful black sarcophagus liquid as we finish this late Spooky Season journey. May Osiris (not Set) be merciful. You can't convince us that it's not still Spooky Season! In that spirit we sift through the sands to deal with 2017's The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sophia Boutella. Jack kicks us off with some updates on horror movies he's watched since our actual Halloween special (namely, Halloween Ends, Hellraiser (2022), and Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon). We dig into the writing of this film and the trouble that comes along long-running script reworks, bemoan the utter lack of Egypt in this thing, marvel at how relatively okay Russell Crowe was, and lament that we couldn't just be watching The Mummy (1999) starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss. Listen to find out what happens when you try entirely too hard to make a movie fit a star (who apparently wanted to channel Nathan Fillion) and also setup an entire cinematic universe with a bunch of shoehorned sequel bait. On this episode of The Middle School Mind podcast, Son's friend, TB, is back to talk about video games nobody plays anymore. These are games that Son and TB have played in the past and the two discuss the replayability, graphics and why these games should get another look. Unravel 2 (2018) - sequel to the original Unravel. It's a puzzle game with little yarn people that Son and Father play together. Minecraft Dungeons (2020) - it was great to play when it first came out during COVID. But the latest updates were more visual and didn't enhance replayability. It just felt very repetitive. There's no building or crafting which is different from the traditional, open-world Minecraft game. The two explain “grinding” for all the baby-boomers. Portal 2 (2011) - this game improves on the original Portal which has great use of imagination and physics. This game is relatively inexpensive and the two player function is fun to boobytrap and annoy your friends. The graphics are good for a 10+ year old game. Brawlhalla (2014) - it's like Walmart Great Value brand Super Smash Bros. It's better than Smash Bros in some ways. Job Simulator (2016) - it's a fun game to get a newbie VR user accustomed to holding the controllers. TB had some controller issues when he tried playing Job Simulator. There are four basic jobs you can do in the game to try different challenges and learn new skills. We play a game about video game trivia. Thanks to TB for being a guest on our show again. Catch TB's first appearance on the show when Son and TB talked about a school lunch menu overhaul. We will definitely have him back on for future episodes of The Middle School Mind! For our latest venture into Development Hell, we take on one of the biggest, most infamous examples of a film that never came to be: Tim Burton's Superman Lives. In the first part of our deepest dive yet, we start most people's first exposure to the story, Kevin Smith's story of getting hired to write the script. We examine Smith's story and dissect his script, but to really lay the groundwork for this tale we need to get to know the producer who hired Smith to begin with, Jon Peters. We relive the most intense and absurd of their filming experiences, revel in the early years of the View Askewniverse, ponder whether Jon Peters thinks Barbara Streisand can read, learn something new about sex worker hair trends of the 70s, and so, so much more. Listen as we rifle through the vast and numerous filing cabinets that hold this story, as we wish Warner Bros had done before Peters could get his hands on Supes' rights from the Salkinds. CW: Sexism, homophobia, violent behavior, comparisons to Donald Trump, mention of the Heidi Fleiss Hollywood Madame case -- and that's all just Jon Peters! Phil Kessel takes some shots at Arizona after he signs with Vegas, which is justified, but should we be really that concerned about what Phil Kessel is saying? Chet Holmgren gets hurt during Jamal Crawford's Basketball Pro-Am event and will be out for the year. Is this irresponsible, should his decision making change for the future? Patrick Beverly to the Lakers, what a hilarious addition to this team, which has his long-time enemy Russell Westbrook already. We're officially back for SEASON 2! We open things up by taking a fortunately short trip to Textopolis to break down The Emoji Movie (2017), the only animated children's film to ever win Worst Picture at the Razzie Awards. While we do have some ideas for how to fix this mess, we decided to try something different for our season premiere and examine Jack's writing tool of choice, the Hero's Journey, and how The Emoji Movie ignores the parts of the Journey it actually does engage with. Listen as we rant about how deeply this movie misunderstands basic technology, Jack learns where emojis even come from, Joe gushes about how great Jason Mantzoukas is, and we all become overly concerned with Jack's foot hygiene and overall bathroom cleanliness. Welcome to the first set of deleted scenes from our first season! While we prep for season 2, we wanted to share some of our favorite bits from the cutting room floor. Scenes included: -Jack and Joe acknowledging the logical impact of Spider-Man: No Way Home on the past of the MCU -Antonio Palacios of the Cultworthy Podcast enlightening us to the wonders of Gilbert Gottfried's podcast -Instagram bookmark maker and literary influencer Jill Sheehe admiring the work of Bob Hoskins -Caleb Feigles of Making a Martini reminisces about post-dining mass bathroom emergencies in college with Jack, and his love of My Cousin Vinny -Raphael Moran of the Geeky Dad Podcast digging deeper into Alfred's possible creepiness or maybe extreme tailoring prowess in Batman & Robin -Mike Elliott and our recollections of movie rental places, presenting Knife-Bricker: The Brickening at a regional film festival, and an in-depth and possibly too serious discussion of some problems with the ending of WandaVision (note that this was recorded WAY before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out) CW: discussion of consent and consequences of actions in relation to WandaVision We only started collecting these deleted scenes somewhere before the midpoint of the season, so we don't have material for the first handful of episodes. These bits are also not edited aside from some egregious background noise taken out of some clips, so we apologize for inconsistent volume or quality. Some of that is due to technical issues at the time of recording that we struggled to get around in the original episodes, and some of that is because Joe was recovering from COVID-19 while working on this and didn't have the brainpower to fix more. We'll have another of these episodes in two weeks, and soon after that we'll be back in earnest with season 2! Thank you all so much for listening and supporting us. For our season 1 finale, we finally tackle the movie that SHOULD have been named Worst Picture of 2021, Thunder Force. While it wasn't nominated for a single Razzie, Ben Falcone and Melissa McCarthy's latest collaborative effort is but one of a whole line of films that beg the simple question: Why? We don't just tear Thunder Force apart -- we go back through the entirety of On The Day Production's films (2014's Tammy, 2016's The Boss, 2018's Life of the Party, and 2020's Superintelligence) to show conclusively that Falcone has not learned much as a director, writer, or storyteller, and break down the bad habits he and McCarthy fall into in the process. But, really, are they ALL bad? Join us for an academic treatise comparing On The Day's work to that of Adam Sandler, the absolute worst super powers you've ever heard of, bewilderment over Octavia Spencer's utter lack of emotion, and more praise for one weird crab man than you probably needed to hear. We also take a moment to gush about how good The Batman and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once are, because we clearly needed to talk about anything other than these bad comedies for a bit. CW: brief mentions of mental illness and bad media portrayals thereof; minor spoilers of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once Podcast plugged in this episode: The Geeky Dad Podcast (@geekydadpod on Twitter) If you want to review our fix for this or any other movie, or if you would like to make a suggestion for season 2, please email us at derazzledpodcast@gmail.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derazzled/support
Tonight the Three Geeky Dads are joined by yet another Geeky Dad. All the way from New York, we were joined by Raphael Moran (who hosts the Geeky Dad Podcast and the Geeky Dad After Dark Podcast) and he helped us to talk up the Disney Plus mini-series, The Book Of Boba Fett!
In honor of The Batman, a very good movie we would love to talk about, we decided to take a look at the absolute worst film adaptation of Batman to date: 1997's Batman & Robin. Special guest Raphael Moran of the Geeky Dad Podcast joins us to explore Joel Schumacher's Greek-mythology-infused, pun-laden toyetic living cartoon. Perhaps surprising no one, we end up on some tangents to try and discuss literally anything else. Topics include: Batman Forever, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Raphael's thoughts on the X-Men films, entirely too many detours to Bat Nipples, an official DeRazzled codpiece, what action figures of all of us would look like, and our pitch for Speed 3: Caged Heat starring Nick Nolte, Nick Cage, and Nick Cannon (seriously, Hollywood, you owe us for that gem). BANE! LISTEN! PODCAST! ENJOY! Check out the Geeky Dad Podcast wherever you find podcasts, or on Twitter (@geekydadpod). The nominations for the 42nd annual Golden Raspberry Awards have been announced, and Jack and Joe managed to avoid actually looking at them until part way through this recording! They offer their predictions for what they think will be nominated, marvel/rage over what was/wasn't ACTUALLY nominated, then go over the 94th annual Academy Award nominations to remember that good movies do exist. Listen for coverage of a plethora of films both great AND terrible, potentially unpopular opinions about Zack Snyder's Justice League and Paul Thomas Anderson, and a lovely tale about Jack's childhood that would make any social worker deeply upset but probably unsurprised. Now go watch Bronson, starring Tom Hardy. CW for references to drug paraphernalia and a fully nude Tom Hardy. After a number of intense episodes on Razzie winners, we decided to take it a little easier on ourselves and cover a potentially snubbed Worst Picture nominee: 1997's Spice World! Naturally it ended up being our longest single episode to date. Special guest and bookmark maker Jill Sheehe helps us figure out what this movie really really wants and where the budget went. Jack manages to put the Spice Girls in the Marvel Comics canon. Joe tries to puzzle out ambiguous James Bond rankings. And guest expert BeLinda Berry joins us to talk about whether Geri Halliwell/Ginger Spice's Girl Power persona is actually feminist. See Jill's bookmarks and reach out to buy some on Instagram @glittery_shenanigans See BeLinda's writing on a variety of feminist topics for Olney Magazine.
