Tónlist í þættinum: Senn koma jólin / Sigríður Beinteinsdóttir (Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson, texti Kristlaug María Sigurðardóttir) Hátíðarfiðringur/Pálmi Sigurhjartarsson og Unnur Birna Bassadóttir(Pálmi Sigurhjartarsson -Herdís Anna Þorvaldsdóttir ) Kom þú til mín / Adda Örnólfs og Hljómsveit Carls Bilich (Kristinn Magnússon, texti Jón Ingiberg Bjarnason) Bella símamær / Adda Örnólfs (lagahöfundur ókunnur, texti Guðmundur Guðmundarson) UMSJÓN GUÐRÚN GUNNARSDÓTTIR OG GUNNAR HANSSON

Have you ever dreamed of experiencing a magical Christmas market around the holidays?  I researched numerous places both internationally and locally (to the USA) and found 5 places that encapsulate both the Old World feel and winter recreation opportunities.1) Vienna, Austria: Hosts one of the largest on the planet with numerous markets across the city. Nine skiing places in the vicinity.2) Dresden Striezelmarkt- Dresden, Germany: Germany's oldest markets surrounded by the Baroque city.  Germany does host the most Christmas markets in one country, including; Frankfort, Heidelberg, Munich and others. Plus lots of skiing available among all the mountain ranges in the area.3) Zagreb Christmas Market- Zagreb, CroatiaFocus is on advent throughout the activities within the market.4) Carmel Christkindlmarkt- Carmel, Indiana (USA)The town looks like Saxony, Germany and features the only Gluhwein pyramid with 3000 lights and 33 feet tall.5) Georgetown Christmas Market- Georgetown, Colorado (USA)A quaint town with horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling, festive shopping and eating roasted chestnuts. Only runs the 2 weekends before Christmas. Being in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region, plenty of places to have a winter wonderland experience as well. Wat is je grootste vijand in december? Kerstkransjes? Chocoladeletters? Gluhwein of oliebollen? Main Entrance FastCast: Theme Parks, Museums, and so much more!

"O'zapft is!" - Traditional Opening of Oktoberfest Last Saturday, September 21st, marked the first day of the 2019 Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In honor of this historic and exciting volksfest, this week on the Main Entrance FastCast we’ll be looking at attractions and designs from Deutschland. So, grab your morning strudel, and let’s have a quick look at how location-based entertainment can actually be a way to honor and embrace a people or culture. Cultural festivals, what the Germans would call Volksfests, are social gatherings that celebrate traditional folk crafts and folk music. In many places and events this often includes cultural foods and beverages, commonly of the alcoholic variety. Now, in the time we have, we definitely can’t go over all of them, so let’s take a quick look at a handful of these volksfeste around Germany, and what they have to offer. With our quote today, it’d be easy to start with the famous Oktoberfest in Munich, but hang tight, we’ll be revisiting the Theresienwiese later on this week. Let’s start in the city of Hamburg, home to the Hamburger Dom. The Dom, named for the former city cathedral, is actually the biggest public festival in Northern Germany, and unlike Oktoberfest, it’s held three times a year, in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. The name of this festival comes from the use of the old Hamburg cathedral as a winter shelter for merchants, artisans and entertainers. At the beginning of the 19th Century the old cathedral was demolished, sending these folks around the city until they found a new home in the Heiligengeistfeld area. Like Oktoberfest, the stars of the Dom are the food, crafts, and the rides! Here you can enjoy sauerkraut, currywurst, and the famous Schmalzkuchen, fried pastry made from yeast dough and topped with sugar. Next, let’s head over to Stuttgart, the home of the Cannstatter Volksfest, also known as the Stuttgart Beer Festival. Spanning three weekends from the end of September to early October, this festival originally began in 1817 due to a very poor harvest caused by a volcanic eruption a world away. Thanks to help from the Russian Czar, many people in Germany were saved from starvation, and in recognition of this, the festival was created to celebrate the harvest. Over time, this even evolved from an agricultural festival into a celebration of the people. As a symbol of the harvest and thanksgiving, an enormous 23 meter tall pillar was constructed, which is decorated, fittingly, with fruit. Finally, let's head deeper into winter and talk about a famous event in Germany that has been transplanted across the globe, the Christkindlmarkt or Christmas Market. These are street markets built to celebrate the Christmas holiday in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. While these festivals are quite prolific in the region, the markets in Dortmund and Cologne see attendance in the millions! Among the wonderful sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of these markets are the Nussknacker, or nutcrackers, traditional Christmas cookies called Lebkuchen, and, my personal favorite, Gluhwein, a hot mulled wine to keep you warm on chilly winter nights. These festivals are certainly purveyors of good cheer, as well as preserving the traditions and cultures of their respective hometowns. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see Christkindlmarkts in the United States, United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. There’s even a small version built annually at Epcot at Walt Disney World. Volksfeste can be an incredible way to fully immerse yourself in traditional German culture. We barely scratched the surface of events that you can find around Germany, so if you plan to head to Deutschland, make sure to grab a travel guide or hop on Google and see to it that you hit at least one of these wonderful get-togethers!

Christmas is over and the presents are put away, but for many of us, the holiday season isn’t quite finished yet. There’s still New Year’s and a spate of winter parties to attend. If you happen to be hosting a celebration, we’ve got a time-tested, easy mid-winter fix for your bar: Hot, mulled, alcoholic drinks.  Not only do beverages like gløgg, glühwein, and wassail warm you up, they also make your entire home smell wonderful, said Rosie Schaap, the “Drink” columnist for The New York Times Magazine and the author of Drinking With Men. She added that hot drinks can’t be quaffed as quickly as cool cocktails. “So it kind of, you know, keeps people a little steadier, takes a little longer,” she said. “You can luxuriate over your glass of wassail or gløgg or gluhwein.” These traditional beverages are so popular that they can also be the source of contention. “I’ve heard many a bar argument between a Norwegian American and a Swedish American over [the origins of gløgg],” Scaap said. “Like most of these kinds of warm winter beverages, it’s essentially a folk tradition, so anyone who claims to have the authoritative gløgg recipe is loaded with hubris, I would say.” Whether your family recipe insists on dried bitter orange peel over the addition of fresh orange, there are three constants when it comes to gløgg — red wine, orange, and cardamom. “To me, it’s that spice that really distinguishes gløgg from other mulled drinks,” Schaap said. “And then there are countless variables. You can make it stronger with vodka or aquavit or brandy. You could add cloves, cinnamon, allspice, other kinds of spices. You could garnish with raisins and almonds.” The recipe Schaap received from her Swedish friend Annika originated with a handful of this or a small handful of that. (Find it here in a more precise form.) She cautions to start small and then add more as needed. Gluhwein — which could easily be called German or Austrian — does not generally include cardamom. Schaap also noted that she’d once seen glühwein made with white wine, which is never the case with gløgg. Otherwise, both follow the same principles of mulled wine: heat wine and add spices. The application of heat may lead some of the alcohol to evaporate, but not much. Slow cookers make handy, safe vessels for keeping drinks hot. After all, an open flame at a raucous party could equal trouble. English wassail is a hot, boozy beverage of a different nature. Instead of wine, it uses cider — either hard cider or the nonalcoholic variety. Again, spices and heat lend it a holiday flair. Schaap explained that its likely wassail originated in the Southwest of England, around Dorset or Somerset, in orchard country. Villagers would go “wassailing” to the orchards to try and invoke a good harvest. Schaap said the first time she tried wassail was at The Drink in Williamsburg, and she recommend this recipe from Jenn Dowds of The Churchill. Also, here’s her recipes for gløgg and glühwein. Annika’s gløgg Glühwein by chef Kurt Gutenbrunner of Blaue Gans and Café Sabarsky WassailFrom Jenn Dowds, The ChurchillBy Rosie Schaap Yield: About 12 servings 5 to 6 small to medium honey crisp (or Fuji or McIntosh) apples, cored 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 2 cups Madeira 2 bottles (22.4 ounces) London Pride Ale 4 bottles (48 ounces) Strongbow English Cider 1 cup apple cider 12 whole cloves 12 whole allspice berries 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 inches long 2 strips orange peel, 2 inches long 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place apples in a 9-by-9-inch glass baking dish. Spoon light and dark brown sugar into center of each apple, dividing sugar evenly among them. Pour 1 cup water into bottom of dish and bake until tender, about 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, pour Madeira, ale and English and apple ciders into a large slow cooker or heavy pot. Place cloves, allspice, cinnamon and orange peel into cheesecloth, tie shut with kitchen twine and add to slow cooker or pot along with ginger and nutmeg. Set slow cooker to medium, or place pot over low heat. Gently simmer for about 1 hour, while apples bake, or longer if desired. 3. Add liquid from the baking dish and stir to combine. Using tongs, transfer apples into slow cooker or pot to garnish. Reduce heat. Ladle hot wassail into heatproof cups to serve.
