From fleeting connections in steamy bathhouses to poetic sexts and longing glances, we explore how ephemeral encounters teach us about ourselves in ways long-term relationships cannot. Manuel shares his insights on the evolution of liminal queer spaces in the age of apps, the intoxicating possibilities of strangers, and the surprising discoveries of embracing our inner “stranger.” Whether you're navigating throuples, redefining monogamy, or just curious about the magic of cuddle puddles, this conversation will leave you questioning what intimacy truly means in a digital world.ABOUT MANUEL BETANCOURTMANUEL BETANCOURT is a queer Colombian culture writer and film critic. SMILING THROUGH THE APOCALYPSE—In the past few weeks, Will Welch has taken a bit of flack for letting Beyoncé promote her new whiskey label on the cover of GQ's October issue, with an interview that one X user described as “an intimate email exchange between GQ and several layers of Beyonce's comms team.”Whether that kind of thing rankles you or not—and yes, we asked him about it—in the five years since Welch took over, GQ seems to be doing as well or better than everybody else in the industry. Why? Ask around. He's got a direct line to celebrities, who consider him a personal friend. He's got real credibility with The Fashion People. And because of both of these things, advertisers love him.Perhaps most importantly, his boss Anna Wintour loves him. The Atlanta-born Welch started his career at the alternative music and culture mag the Fader in the early aughts, and jumped to GQ in 2007. For a decade under EIC Jim Nelson, he operated as the magazine's fashion-and-culture svengali, eventually becoming the creative director of the magazine and the editor of the brand's fashion spinoff, GQ Style. In 2019, Wintour tapped him for the big job: Editor-in-Chief of GQ—a title that in 2020 was recast in the current Condé Nast survival-mode as Global Editorial Director of GQ, overseeing 19 editions around the world. After speaking with Welch only a few hours after the Beyonce cover dropped, we get what all the fuss is about. He is a great sport with good hair and just enough of a Southern accent who is confident-yet-never-cocky about his mission at GQ.Let other people bemoan the “death of print.” Will Welch is having a blast at the Last Supper. —This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press.

Former student, Michael Stingle enters the Lounge with his band, MIGHTY JOE CASTRO AND THE GRAVAMEN. I had a great time discussing live music, set-list creation and rockabilly.  Check out this link: https://thegravamen.mightyjoecastro.com/ BIO: Based out of Philadelphia, PA, Mighty Joe Castro and the Gravamen is the latest musical project from accomplished collage artist and musician Joe Castro (ex-The Situation, The Lift Up, Nero /OPF). Heavily influenced by the sound of rockabilly as well as ‘50s rock-n-roll and doo-wop, the band takes that vintage rock and roll sound but updates it with a modern lyrical approach and a healthy dose of post-modern guitar effects. Consider it a house that resides at the cross roads where Sun Records and Creation Records meet. The Gravamen were formed after doghouse bassist H00V3r reached out to Castro about forming a new band. H00V3r enlisted Dallas, his band mate in Philadelphia punk rock stalwarts Thorazine, to play drums and later found hot-shot lead guitarist Michael Stingle floating around Mount Airy. The full band held it's first practice together in January 2018 and shortly after recorded their debut EP, Wake Up, You're Rockin'! that May with Grammy nominate producer Jim Salamone at Cambridge Sound Studios in South Philadelphia. The 4 song EP was released in July of 2018, followed by a limited edition vinyl 7” release in October 2018. According to Joe Castro: “We define ourselves as a rockabilly band because the term rock and roll these days has become so broad that it's completely meaningless. But I consider us to be a rock-n-roll band in the truest sense of the word, in the tradition of the pioneers of the genre like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Bo Diddley and Johnny Burnette. My Dad grew up in Brookyln in the' 50s, and would tell me stories about going to the Alan Freed shows at the Paramount and seeing Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. As a kid, those guys were legends to me. Couple that with being taken to the drive-in to see films like American Hot Wax, American Graffiti and Grease – that beat was in my ears from a very early age. It's in my blood. I've always loved it.” Influences include Sun Records, Stray Cats, The Cramps, Buddy Holly and Richie Valens, combined with elements of punk and shoegaze with a lyrical influence of Morrissey, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Bob Dylan. Mighty Joe Castro is an accomplished Philadelphia based collage artist, musician and graphic designer. His work has been shown in galleries and art spaces across the United States, Canada and Europe and featured in numerous books and magazines including The Age of Collage (Gestalten), Glamour, GQ Style, Arkitip and The Baffler. They have been described as “a controlled explosion, aggressive and pensive (Kolaj Magazine)” and “bold and diverse… one of those collage artists whose works you recognize immediately… (Toombes.com).” He is a signature member of the National Collage Society. Derek Ridgers, is an English photographer with a career spanning over thirty years. The emergence of punk rock in the UK in the late 1970S fascinated Ridgers and amongst his first published work were pictures taken at punk gigs at the Hammersmith Palais, London. During this time he photographed Adam and the Ants, The Slits, Penetration, The Clash and The Damned, work exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 1978. Ridgers became a professional photographer and began working regularly for music and style magazines such as the NME and The Face as well as documenting the British fetish club scene. Many of these black and white fetish club scene photographs were later included in the book Stare: Portraits from the Endless Night. His book When We were Young: Club and Street Portraits 1978 – 1987 collects together portraits of young skinheads, punks and new romantics from the seventies through to the late eighties; many, like Boy George, Steve Strange and Spandau Ballet, photographed whilst still unknown. Ridgers has worked for Time Out, The Sunday Telegraph, NME, The Face, Loaded, The Independent on Sunday, The Guardian, The Observer, The Sunday Times, The Independent, GQ, GQ Style, Melody Maker and Sounds. www.derekridgers.com You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 on Player FM https://player.fm/series/a-photographic-life and Podbean www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/i6uqx-6d9ad/A-Photographic-Life-Podcast Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer in Professional Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015).
