As a military veteran or first responder, you need to be planning and implementing strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this Flashback Friday episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we recap Episode 45 with Guy Smith. Guy was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Though gangs were all around him, a strong and influential grandmother and family kept him out of the gang life. Growing up he was into martial arts and wrestling, so after high school he ended up in San Diego coaching and fitness training. Many of the clients he was working with were Special Operations members and they convinced him to join the Navy. Guy enlisted in the Navy and served 6 years as SWCC and deployed multiple times to the Middle East. Injuries and family responsibilities caused him to leave active duty in 2015 but he did 3 additional years in the reserves. After leaving the military he struggled with redefining his mission and what his identity is along with struggling with alcoholism. He considers himself fortunate to have found the Honor Foundation and graduating from their program. Today he continues to support The Honor Foundation along with The Navy Seal Foundation. Today Guy is a IFBB professional bodybuilder and fitness trainer, helping people reach their personal and fitness goals. The Science Behind Your Salad

Weeds are plants that are growing in the wrong place. Certain species can totally devastate farmers crops, resulting in huge losses of both productivity and income for the farmers. They can be the difference between survival and failure of a farm. But are they all bad? Tom Radford is a forager who spends his life travelling around in his van making social media content on plants that are largely unknown but have amazing folklore attached. He talks us through some of the tastier edible species. Sledge Taylor farms cotton in Mississippi in the US; Guy Smith is an arable farmer in the Southeast of England. Both are blighted by weeds that would, given the right conditions and without proper crop protection, put them out of business. Padma Commuri is one of the team of R&D at BASF whose job it is tom strive to predict what species are coming down the line and how they will interact with a changing climate. It's a bit of crystal ball gazing coupled with some scientific knowledge that will keep farmers in production and billions of mouths fed in the coming decades.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello orphans! Today we're doing a deep dive into gun crime statistics: where homicides are concentrated, what kind of guns are used, how we stack up to other countries, and so forth. The goal here is to puncture through pro gun and pro gun control rhetoric to glimpse the real landscape of weapons and death in America. So that we can skip bumper sticker aphorisms and have smart policy conversations.   Guy Smith is the author of “Guns and Control: A Nonpartisan Guide to Understanding Mass Public Shootings, Gun Accidents, Crime, Public Carry, Suicides, Defensive Use, and More” TO DONATE TO THE SHOW: patreon.com/andrewheaton Venmo: Andrew-Heaton-1 PayPal: andrew@mightyheaton.com
