The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Noel Donaldson is a rowing coach. He was a coxswain and competed at the 1979 world championships and then transitioned in to coaching in 1980.In the 1990 in began coaching Australia's Oarsome Foursome, who won Olympic Golds in 1992 and 1996 and 5 world championships. He also coached Georgina Douglas to World Championships in 1998 and 1999. In 2013 became the coach of the New Zealand team of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray who also won back to back Olympic Gold medals.Noel is a serial winning coach whose wisdom transcends sport. Some of the key highlights of the interview are: The importance on treating each new campaign as something separate from the last one. And setting goals that are appropriate for that team, not simply reflecting on the past to set future expectations. How the ‘Oarsome Foursome' would go about debriefing after a performance and importantly how they had the ability to switch on and off, which is something that he thinks is lacking a little today with athletes. His learning as he has matured as a coach that winning at all costs can cause mental health challenges that end up meaning that winning is only temporary. Dan is one of the most requested guests. Elite coach Dr. Dan Plews.   Just days after coaching Chelsea Sodaro to her debut Kona in 8:33, Dr Dan joins Greg to dissect the process of how Chelsea went from having a baby 18 months ago, to winning Kona this past weekend. Dan discusses the training prep, nutrition, and heat adaptations, plus the mental prep that he and Chelsea went through prior to her amazing debut.   Dan Plews is an Applied Sports Scientist, Researcher and coach. As a Sports Scientist (specialising in the area of Physiology) Dan has worked closely with athletes who have won more than 25 world and Olympic titles in the sports of rowing, kayak and triathlon. Athletes include Mahe Drysdale, Lisa Carrington, Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.   As a researcher, Dan completed his PhD in the area of applied heart rate variability (HRV). This work focused on implementing and validating methods regarding the application of HRV to track training adaptation in elite athletes.   Since then, Dan has gone onto having more than 21 peer-reviewed publications in the area of applied sports science.   Dan is seriously passionate about endurance sport, particularly Ironman triathlon, where he has coached 3 athletes under the 8-hour barrier. He lives and breathes it, and is a competitive Ironman athlete himself. In 2018 he broke the amateur course record at Ironman New Zealand by more than 10 minutes in a time of 8 hr 35 min.   Dan thrives on continuous learning and being on the cutting edge of applied sports science. He often throws himself into the depths of new science, measurements and self-quantification to find out first hand the effects that they have on training adaptation.   He's one of the world's greatest minds in endurance sports. He has the practical and personal experience, and he has the science. Check out his website - https://www.endureiq.com/   Timestamps 2:28 - Interview starts 5:36 - It's been a challenging year for one of Dan's star athletes - Javier Gomez. Dan describes his perspective on the 'highs & lows' of professional sport for a coach. 8:08 - Dan holds the course record in Kona @ 8:24. Greg and Dan discuss how fast the race is getting. 14:52 - Dan and Greg discuss at what point in the race he felt Chelsea was going to win. 19:17 - These types of wins are lifechanging for an athlete. Dan explains how he feels Chelsea can go on and win further within the sport plus also to be able to grow and deal with the success at this level. Success breeds Success 23:26 - Dan and Chelsea met only2 years ago ... right before she had her baby. The story from that interview is extraordinary. 28:50 - Chelsea was the first athlete Dan has coached through pregnancy. So he applied his sports science knowledge and got to work on studying what he need to do coach Chelsea back to racing form. 32:46 - Chelsea chose to only take 6 weeks off from training after giving birth. Her frist goal was to get to The Collins Cup. Dan explains her training program and the path to Kona. Chelsea's dedication to race in The Collins Cup is an inspiring story. 36:33 - Chelsea's swimming power was holding her back so they called in Paul Newsome to help and guide her. 42:33 - Dan explains the point at which he and Chelsea decided to focus on Kona. 44:48 - Greg probes Dan on his heat-adaption process for Chelsea and Kona. But do we get the full details? usually Dan is so open in sharing his wisdom. 46:51 - One of the hot topics in endurance sports nutrition at the moment is ‘carbohydrate periodization'. Dan explains his view on training to improve Chelsea's ability to make use of fat as a fuel source during exercise. 52:21 - Greg asks Dan on his views on hydration in race mode. We know that better performance can come from those who lose more body fat lose over the course of a marathon. 55:49 - On race day, what did Dan advise Chelsea in terms of keeping cool? 57:49 - Dan and Greg discuss the mental and emotional preparation for Chelsea prior to the race. I thought you were all about celebrating the everyday rower!” We are. And we always will be. But we have to admit that when Eric reached out and asked to be on the podcast, we had a total fan moment. There was no doubt we'd invite him for a chat. From humble beginnings as an awkward teenage athlete, Eric quickly discovered that being 6'5” translated into impressive erg splits. Coaches noticed too, and he soon found himself on the podium at U16 and U17 events. From there, it was a one way ticket to the national team, World Rowing Championships, and the Olympics. Between 2007 and 2015, a commitment to be the very best brought Eric four indoor rowing world records, eight World Rowing Championships, and two Olympic gold medals. Retired from flat water rowing since 2017, Eric is keeping himself very busy working with Concept2, the Asensei rowing app, and is a member of the World Rowing Indoor Rowing Commission. Eric Murray is one of the greatest New Zealand Olympians of all time.  Hamish Bond and him won 2 gold medals for their rowing and were unbeaten for 69 consecutive races which is mindblowing. In this wide ranging conversation we cover so much ground- rowing, running, his reasons for going on Dancing with the stars, his relationship with marajuana, Celebrity Treasure Island, charity boxing, mental health, divorce, the tragic death of his friend Olivia Podmore, raising an autistic child and much much more.   This is possibly my favourite conversation I've done since I launched this podcast...that may be because Eric turned up with a 6 pack and a bottle of wine (which we consumed every last drop of). But also because for such a well known sporting legend, he is so unfiltered and honest about everything! know you guys will ove this one and I can't wait to share it. This episode originally aired on Nov 24, 2020. The first thing that struck us about meeting Eric for the first time was his approachability. He had a beer in hand, a huge smile and welcomed us into his home like old friends – excited to share his best stories.  The second was his size. The guy is a giant and when you combine that raw power with an insane aerobic ticker, you can start to understand how he won 8 World Championships, 2 Olympic golds and 69 races undedeated in the Kiwi pair with Hamish Bond.    But the ep was a blast – and for the new fans we've collected over the last 18 months – worthy of your time. It's packed with unbelievable stories from two decades at the very top of high-performance sport.  We talk about fighting Manu Vatuvei in the 2012 Fight for Life, competing in a TV show to find NZ's toughest man, nights out in Switzerland – including the time he wrestled a swan into a pub, the infamous meeting when Dick Tonks blew his lid at the Kiwi Pair, and how having a son with autism changed him.  Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, a huge thanks to those donating to the cause on Patreon... visit www.betweentwobeers.com to help support the show.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kia Ora e te whānau. It's hot, eh? This week we've got another greatest hit for you. In fact, not that we really pay attention to the numbers, but we have our most popular episode on DCR ever, Number 83 with the legendary Scotty Stevenson. It was hot the night that we recorded the podcast. Scotty walked into Eugene's lounge dressed up to the nines in full TV makeup (having just left the tele to come do the pod) and proceeded to lay down one of the most engaging, honest, and entertaining hours that we ever recorded.Scotty StevensonA broadcaster and journalist best known for his rugby commentary and reporting which makes him automatically one of the most well-known New Zealand TV personalities. He's a sports journalist with TVNZ, and also works with Spark Sport and Radio Hauraki, commentating on cricket and the America's Cup. He's also a sports writer, has ghost-written and written a string of some of the best sports books, from Straight 8 about Kieran Read, to Kiwi Pair about Eric Murray and Hamish Bond. Scotty has been previously known by his childhood nickname “Sumo” as, by his own account he was the “fat kid in speedos” at surf lifesaving. But things have changed. If you were to Google Scotty Stevenson, the number one thing that pops up on auto-search is “Scotty Stevenson weight loss”. It's because Stevenson has changed. Markedly. He has noticeably shrunk. And for those who've been watching closely, he started running. He's kept very quiet about it, but goodness me, the man is well and truly hooked. Three years ago, he couldn't run 85m. In 2019, he ran 85km, no less, through backcountry New Zealand in the Old Ghost Ultra in just over 12 hours. For those who saw the TVNZ report he did on the event, you'll know that he found it an extremely emotional experience. We talked to Scotty about that race, his life leading up to running, what sparked his decision to lace up, and the myriad of changes that this has had on his life.Enjoy!Episode LinksScotty Stevenson on InstagramScotty Stevenson on TwitterDirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on TwitterDirt Church Radio on FacebookDirt Church Radio on PatreonCieleFurther Faster New ZealandUltraspire NZSpring Energy NZSCOTT Running

This week Black Ferns Sevens Captain Sarah Hirini and two-time Olympic champion rower Hamish Bond were named New Zealand's flag bearers for the Tokyo Olympics. Two thoughts spring to mind. Firstly, congratulations. How cool that a change in Games rules means that for the first time we'll have a male and female athlete jointly carrying the New Zealand flag at an Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. It's not the first time two athletes have shared flag carrying duties. In 2016, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke were both announced as flagbearers, but only Burling got carry the flag. I'm presuming this year Hirini and Bond will have a flag each?My second thought was, how is it possible these Olympics Games are happening at all? A world full of medical experts and epidemiologists, and the people of Japan, have been asking the same question for months. For good reason. It's simply absolutely bonkers for thousands of athletes, officials and journalists to travel from all over the world to Japan at this time. The Japanese Prime Minister may have recently lifted the state of emergency in Tokyo, but health officials have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases since. On Friday, the Japanese Emperor announced he's "extremely worried" about the Tokyo Olympics and the potential spread of COVID-19 it may cause. But in one of the most stoic examples of ‘keep calm and carry on' the Toyko Olympics are set to open on July 23rd. If you're wondering why it hasn't been postponed or cancelled; it comes down to a mix of money, pride and pressure. The IOC can't afford to lose revenue from broadcasting rights and advertisers. When it comes to pride, the Olympics is a branding exercise for the host country. It would also be hard to justify a controversial $15.4 billion investment in a new stadium which never got its day in the sun.And then there's the pressure and expectations from the athletes; about 11,100 for the Olympics and another 4,400 for the Paralympics who have already put their lives on hold for a year waiting for these Games. Taken together, it's all led to common sense being abandoned. Ignored, thrown over the back fence – pick your description. But, given it is going to happen maybe it's time for an attitude adjustment.Instead of anticipating the worst perhaps we should put our optimist pants on, cross our fingers, and consider this a global study into how the world re-integrates.The questions confronting countries who took an elimination approach are around how we live with a virus which isn't going away? How do we open up to the rest of the world?  When should we feel safe to get on with our lives – make plans, go visit family or friends around the world? The Olympics will be an incredible test for vaccine efficacy. A group of people are volunteering to travel from around the world to spend time together. So let's watch and learn as they embrace social distancing, mask use, vaccination, and testing.Imagine if the Olympics became more than stories of glory and dreams come true. What if, and I know it's a big what if, the Covid impact wasn't what we fear.Could Tokyo 2021 be a much bigger story of hope and progress. LISTEN ABOVE

The New Zealand men's rowing eight have booked their ticket to Tokyo after qualifying for the upcoming Olympic Games at the Regatta of Death in Lucerne.New Zealand's crew won the preliminary men's eight race against Romania, China, and Italy, and needed to finish in the top two of last night's final to secure Olympic selection.Originally scheduled to be held last Monday (NZT), the final was brought forward after bad weather was forecasted in Lucerne. One of the crew's rowers Phillip Wilson told Adam Cooper on the All Sports Breakfast it was an odd experience with racing brought forward due to bad weather, as well as Covid-related measures."It all made sense, the weather forecast wasn't great, it would have been pretty unfair racing. We shifted the mindset and got in the right frame of mind," he says."Our reserves and our coaches were saying 'you're racing tomorrow you're racing tomorrow', and so that was like 'oh wow, okay'."The eight will return home to MIQ, and potentially rowing on ergs in their hotel rooms.Their qualification means nine New Zealand crews will be contesting at the Olympic Games.Men's eight crew:Tom Murray, Blenheim Rowing Club (bow)Hamish Bond, North End Rowing ClubShaun Kirkham, Waikato Rowing ClubMichael Brake, North Shore Rowing ClubDan Williamson, Auckland Rowing ClubPhillip Wilson, Petone Rowing ClubTom Mackintosh, Avon Rowing ClubMatt MacDonald, North Shore Rowing Club (stroke)Sam Bosworth, Avon Rowing Club (cox)

Scotty Stevenson is a broadcaster and journalist best known for his rugby commentary and reporting which makes him automatically one of the most well-known New Zealand TV personalities. He’s a sports journalist with TVNZ, and also works with Spark Sport and Radio Hauraki. He’s also a sports writer, has ghost-written and written a string of some of the best sports books, from Straight 8 about Kieran Read, to Kiwi Pair about Eric Murray and Hamish Bond. It’s because Stevenson has changed. Markedly. He has noticeably shrunk. And for those who’ve been watching closely, he started running. He’s kept very quiet about it, but goodness me, the man is well and truly hooked. Two years ago, he couldn’t run 85m. A couple of weeks ago, he ran 85km, no less, through backcountry New Zealand in the Old Ghost Ultra in just over 12 hours. For those who saw the TVNZ report he did on the event, you’ll know that he found it an extremely emotional experience. We talked to Scotty about that race, his life leading up to running, what sparked his decision to lace up, and the myriad of changes that this has had on his life. Honest, engaging, and unalloyed, this is a fantastic conversation with a broadcasting legend that we are so thrilled to bring you.. Enjoy!
