Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legends Kieran and Nicole Crowley for #RugbyHive Episode 33. Kieran played in the backline for the All Blacks from 1983-1991 (19 Caps) winning the 1987 Rugby World Cup on home soil. He was also part of the New Zealand team that won the Bledisloe Cup in 1985, 1990 and 1991. Kieran played 199 times for club team Taranaki, scoring 1,723 points, and later coached Taranaki from 1998-2007. Kieran spent eight years coaching the Canadian Men's 15s team, taking them to the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. He then spent five seasons with Benetton in Italy, which is when this interview was recorded during 2020. Since we spoke, Kieran was named Coach of the Year while at Benetton Rugby guiding them to a Pro 14 Rainbow Cup Championship (2021), before being selected as the Head Coach of Italy in May of 2021. He led Italy to a 22-21 win over Wales in the 2021 Six Nations, and then recorded one of the biggest upsets to date for the Azzurri by defeating Australia 28-27 in the Autumn tours of 2022. Kieran's daughter, Nicole, also grew up New Zealand until she moved to Canada with her family at 12 years of age. She played for Team BC in 7s and 15s, captaining them to a National Championship. At just 18 years old while completing an internship at Rugby Canada, Nicole got the opportunity to become Manager of the Canada Women's 15s team. From there she worked on contract with Rugby Canada while finishing her Business degree at the University of Victoria, where she was also a member of the UVic Vikes rugby team. Nicole managed the Women's 15s side through their 2017 World Cup campaign as well as the Women's 7s team to the Pan American Games, HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Olympic Qualification. Since our interview, Nicole moved North with her partner (who works in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), living in the remote sub-Arctic in the Northwest Territories, in a town of only 450 people and with no roads connecting it to other towns. Nicole is the Director of Recreation for the municipality where she is highly involved with Special Olympics NT and Sport North, where she works to help disadvantaged and remote kids from communities like hers, access sporting opportunities. In this episode we talk about Kieran and Nicole's rugby backgrounds, their accomplishments in the sport, and how they both used rugby as a vehicle to live and work in different countries and experience new cultures. Caradh caught up with Sligo swimmer Mona McSharry on iScore today following her Olympic qualification earlier this week. Mona talked about her focus on the upcoming European Championships as well as the Olympic Games in Tokyo which are less than three months away. She also spoke about her recent success at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) 2021 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in the US. The NCAA have been criticised for their treatment of athletes and their position of not paying athletes. While McSharry doesn't feel athletes should necessarily be paid she does believe that she should be permitted to promote herself. “It would be nice to be able to promote myself, I guess, which were not really allowed to do right now”. If you ask Joey Wagman to describe his baseball career, he'll tell you—with a wink—it's a bit unorthodox. Since his 2013 graduation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he earned All-American honors and served as team captain for two years, he's played in both the minor leagues and several different independent leagues. Since 2013, he's also pitched for Team Israel, thanks to rules that allow those with Jewish heritage to represent the country at many levels of play. To reach the top echelon, however—the Olympic Games—requires national citizenship. So in 2018, Wagman and nine of his Jewish-American teammates became dual citizens. This past September, Joey pitched for his new nation in the Africa/Europe 2020 Olympic Qualification tournament—leading them to victory and securing the team's spot in Tokyo. It's a moment that, back in high school or even early in his pro career, he never could have imagined, he told us on this week's episode of The Injured Athletes Club. He also explains that the high he's riding was made all the more meaningful due to the lows from which he'd recently emerged—a shoulder injury the prior summer that required surgery in December of 2018 and affected his mental health in ways that caught him off guard. On this episode, Joey shares: More about how it is that he came to be playing in the Olympics for Team Israel (6:32) How injuries are viewed in baseball generally, and among pitchers specifically (12:27) The shoulder injury that set him back last year, and why an incorrect diagnosis and prognosis at first was so devastating (13:56) How The Injured Athletes Club podcast played a role in Joey's recovery (and also why it was sometimes tough to listen) (18:50) The darker days he experienced along the way, and how they took him by surprise (20:21) Why he feels so compelled to share them: To let other athletes know they're not alone, and they won't feel that way forever (22:35) Why it's important to recognize baseball as something he does, but not all he is (25:52) The biggest factors in lifting him out of the low spots (26:49) His most crucial advice for other injured athletes (28:51) How he plans to continue building his confidence heading toward the 2020 Games (37:07) Resources/links: Joey's website, Instagram, and Twitter Some background on the team's journey, from the Wall Street Journal and the Jerusalem Post Joey's GoFundMe to raise money for his trip to the Games You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts.
