At the dawn of the 1930s, Germany is a physics powerhouse, where great minds like Albert Einstein and Max Planck have revolutionized the scientific landscape. But a talented young physicist named Trude Goldhaber struggles to make her voice heard in a male-dominated field. Trude perseveres, despite the pressures of antisemitism and misogyny all around her. Forced to work in the shadow of her scientist husband, she contributes to research and discoveries that help create the most dangerous weapon known to mankind. Later, when Trude finally makes a name for herself, she does everything in her power to lift up the young women following in her footsteps.  Thanks to a grant from the American Institute of Physics and funds from the German Foreign Office, LBI processed and digitized the approximately 19 linear feet of Trude's papers, which consist of notes, graphs and diagrams, original data, and correspondence related to her research between 1930 and 2000. For Karl Adler, there is nothing more powerful than music. While recovering from an injury sustained as a soldier in World War I, Karl pursues his goal of changing the way music is taught in Germany. And for a while, he's successful – until a former student (and member of Hitler's Brownshirts) falsely reports him for sexual harassment. Forced to start over, Karl devotes himself to creating a new cultural association for German Jews. As antisemitic laws take hold and Jews begin to flee Germany en masse, Karl continues to connect people through music – even as the world falls apart around him.  The Karl Adler collection at LBI documents his entire career, including his engagement at the Royal Court Opera of Wurttemberg, his WWI service, and his work with the Conservatory and the Jewish Culture League in Stuttgart. Records of the Jüdische Mittelstelle show Adler intervening with the Gestapo on behalf of Jewish families seeking news of their husbands and fathers who had disappeared or been arrested. A folder of materials he collected about the Jewish history of Buttenhausen includes a photograph of Adler, his voice raised in song, at the dedication of his native town's Holocaust memorial in 1961. Suddenly, Jacobson's meticulous research is being used to destroy the people whose history he wanted to preserve. Unwittingly, Jacobson has also become an invaluable asset to the Nazis. Can he protect himself without betraying his community?  One of the most extensive collections in the LBI Archives, the Jacob Jacobson collection includes former holdings of the Gesamtarchiv der Deutschen Juden – birth, death, and marriage records, mohel books, and administrative records from Jewish communities across Germany dating back to 1660. The remaining holdings of the Gesamtarchiv are now divided between the Central Archive of the Jewish People in Jerusalem and Centrum Judaicum in Berlin. At the height of his fame, a shirtless, barefooted Albert Einstein escapes the bustle of Berlin for a simpler life. The best thinkers of the time gather at his beloved summer house in Caputh to laze by the water, swap ideas, and gossip. There, he can escape the pressures of global fame, but his summer haven can't keep him safe from the growing Nazi movement bubbling in Germany.  The Albert Einstein Collections in the Archives of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York include hundreds of Einstein's personal photographs, many from Caputh, as well as the Guestbook from his summer home. After a few pages bearing the signatures of the friends and international luminaries who visited the Einsteins those short summers before 1933, most of the pages remain blank. You can see the Collections at www.lbi.org/caputh.  Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute, New York | Berlin and Antica Productions.  It's narrated by Mandy Patinkin.  Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. We’re trying to find a way to work around that in regards to the podcast, so you may notice the audio quality is a little funky in this episode. We appreciate your patience as we make adjustments in regard to George’s diagnosis. Stick around for this episode’s “After Dark” segment for more details. In This Episode:As we tell this story, keep in mind that due to history largely being written and taught from a European perspective, the legitimacy of the so-called madness that Ibrahim became notorious for is still debated over by historians and biographers. As you know, these are always my favorite episodes to explore because it’s such a fun puzzle to try to solve. "But by this time, Ibrahim was so paranoid after walking on eggshells for so many years that he thought it was a trap and Murad was still alive, like he was gonna pop out behind a column, like, “Got ya sucker!” and then slit his throat. So his mom and Grand Vizier are like, “No, really, he’s dead.”And Ibrahim goes, “Let me see the body then.”And they’re like, “Are you serious?” And Ibrahim goes, “He just killed four of our siblings, yes I’m fucking serious. Show me the body.”So he PERSONALLY examines his brothers corpse and after he’s finally convinced that the whole situation isn’t some giant ruse, he’s like, “Ok, I’ll take the job.”During the early years of his reign, Ibrahim’s Grand Vizier is mostly calling the shots and he makes progress stabilizing the empire.

This is part of one of a 3-part mini-series on last mile distribution. This series is a collaboration between the Finding Impact Podcast and the Global Distributors Collective (or the GDC). The GDC is a collective of over 140 last mile distribution companies around the world, which helps them reach underserved customers with life-changing products like solar lights, clean cookstoves, water filters, and sanitation and nutrition products. The GDC has two main pillars of activity: It provides services that help distributors save time and money, adopt best practices and facilitate new partnerships; and, It works to build a collective voice for and raise the profile of last mile distributors, and works with key stakeholders to help them better support the sector. The GDC is hosted by Practical Action with implementing partners Hystra and BoP Innovation Center. Visit the GDC's website at www.globaldistributorscollective.org to find out more. This episode with EcoFiltro, a distributor of water filters in Guatemala, focuses on how distributors can improve their sales efficiency by pivoting their distribution model. On this episode you'll learn: EcoFiltro started with a micro-consignment model in which they'd give hundreds of community entrepreneurs across Guatemala five filters to sell in their community, and they'd earn 10% on each sale. The model proved unsustainable due to the cost of pre-financing the filters which would often be paid back over two years, the cost of collecting the money from customers, and the low sales volumes achieved by community entrepreneurs. They tried a number of different things to try and improve sales, such as training, offering incentives and encouraging referrals, but all their efforts only yielded a few extra filters sold per month. They spent 18 months designing a new model, which involved speaking to retailers all across the country, and ultimately selected a few to be key distributors of the filter. Retailers were happy to sell it because the filter had a strong brand, since it had been sold for a long time in big shops in urban areas and received good PR from a school donation programme. Retailers were required to invest in 20 filters at a time for a $500 investment, so were motivated to recoup their investment. The school donation programme, where filters were donated to local schools, was channelled through the local retailers, so they received the attention and drove customers to buy from them locally. They now have around 100 local distributors and they're targeting 270 by June 1st, 2019, which will be about 20-25 distributors per sales agent. They've strengthened the brand by investing in their sales and marketing collateral, so all retailers are giving the same message to customers. This enables them to more easily measure sales of each distributor every month Links to resources from this episode: Avon EcoFiltro Connect with Philip Email address provided in the interview Philip on LinkedIn EcoFiltro on Twitter

Philip Wilson is a serial entrepreneur, who, having been successful in business in the USA and Guatemala, sought meaning and purpose in his life and turned his hand to social entrepreneurship. He built Ecofiltro into a profitable business that serves clean water to the rural poor of Guatemala. Philip also mentors other social enterprises who focus on building financially sustainable businesses and have “doing good” at their core. He now lives in Antigua, Guatemala and also runs an organic coffee farm! For us, this was an incredibly inspiring interview and we were grateful for the opportunity to learn about the following from Philip: Finding happiness in being a giver, how the concept of 'people, planet and prosperity' is entirely feasible, the Ecofiltro business model, sustainable manufacturing and the role of consumers and social enterprises in driving change.  ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Find the show notes here  ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ *** SOCIALIZE WITH US *** Website Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Episode 18 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with saxophonist David Murray. David Murray arrived in New York in the mid-1970s as a student from Pomona College in California, and quickly started playing gigs in the lofts that were hosting most of the really forward-looking music at that time. He can be heard on the Wildflowers compilation, which documented a run of performances at Sam Rivers’ RivBea studio in 1976, and he made his debut album, Flowers For Albert, around the same time, with Olu Dara on trumpet, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Philip Wilson on drums. And since then, he’s made somewhere in the neighborhood of three hundred records, and probably more. What makes Murray important, though, is not just his productivity, but his unique voice – he combines old and new school styles in a really striking way, attacking with the whole horn, from the bottom to the top of its range and creating a sound that’s part Ben Webster, part Archie Shepp, and part Albert Ayler, but ultimately unlike anyone else out there. And he’s different from a lot of tenor players in that he doesn’t also play soprano. He plays tenor and bass clarinet, and that’s pretty much it. In this interview, I’m talking to him about a whole bunch of things. He’s got a new album called Blues For Memo, which we discuss a little bit, and we talk about his political views and how they manifest in his art, about why he’s made as many records as he has, about his creative relationship with Dave Burrell, who I interviewed in episode 15, we talk about his voice on the tenor saxophone, why he likes the octet format, and a lot of other subjects as well. I think it’s a really interesting interview, one I've wanted to do for a long time, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

When I come, it’s a day rate and you get my whole book of experience. I don’t hold anything back for ean extra $15 or an extra $50.”   “I train all of my artists to take a picture [of the makeup] with and without flash.” “I had a photographer tell me once, ‘Alayne, it doesn’t matter how much hairspray you use, if their hair is down and it’s a humid day by the end of the night it just doesn’t look good.’ So I usually recommend that if you’re wanting to do two dresses and two different hairstyles, wear it down initially and then let us put it up.”   “There’s no feedback that’s bad or that we want to be afraid of. We want feedback, we want to get better, we want to grow every year.”   “You don’t get a second chance to look good on your wedding.” Links:   Manly Bands offer unique wedding bands all at an affordable price all for less than $200. If so, should we be investing in floating cities now to solve this problem? What might they look and sound like? We meet the so-called Aquapreneurs and Seavangelists crafting models for these floating habitats. They have ambitious, yet dramatically different theories to solve these not-so-distant problems.
