In this episode Dr Hannah Wilkinson talks about her doctoral research which focused on re-evaluating teachers' use of test-taking practices from a psychological lens; unpicking how students appraised these types of communications and how it affects their engagement in the classroom. Essentially we will consider the messages that we, as teachers, give to students when we talk about exam preparation specifically and the different ways that students might interpret these communications and how, hopefully we can make them more impactful. We talk about threat and efficacy appeals. Papers Hannah Mentioned: Wilkinson, H. (2024). Just when Aotearoa needed a pick-me-up, the Football Ferns absolutely delivered. The team came out strong in the World Cup opening game against former world champs Norway, leaving the sellout Eden Park crowd buzzing. Hannah Wilkinson hit the winning strike, making herself a household name in her own country and swept into sporting history; this is the only game Aotearoa has ever won at a Football World Cup final. She went nuts and so did the jam packed crowd, the striker was so overwhelmed she says she couldn't hear a thing. The Ferns didn't just win, they dominated the match in a way not even their biggest supporters probably could have imagined. And it's no exaggeration to say their performance has set the 2023 FIFA World Cup alight, with the online ticket machine jamming up right after the game. There is a face of this World Cup. Burnt into my conscience. It's the face of Hannah Wilkinson as she drank in the atmosphere before kick off against Norway. Standing with her teammates, waiting to walk on to her field of dreams. The stone-cold determination. The laser focus. The will. Watching her face sent chills through me. On the pitch, during the anthem, flanked by the women charged with lighting the touch paper for arguably the biggest sporting event in NZ's history, every fibre of her being, every twitch and expression screamed intent. Hannah Wilkinson then sent the country into another stratosphere with her clinical finish of a textbook sweep down the field. A magical movement, personifying footballs oft used sobriquet, the beautiful game. Her determination, razor mindset and indefatigable will to win was laid out for all to see post-match in her interviews. Not arrogant, not that of baseless swagger, but the words of an athlete, determined and driven to stand up on the world sage and roar. If that goal, that team performance and that spirit doesn't lift NZ, doesn't trebuchet this sporting nation into the heart of this World Cup, nothing will. That'll do. Hannah Wilkinson recently joined the University of Nottingham as Assistant Professor of Criminology and is a member of the Criminal Justice Research Centre. Football Ferns coach Tom Sermanni has named an experienced squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The 23-woman squad, who have set the goal of making history for New Zealand by being the first team to win at a World Cup and first to advance from the group stage, is laden with experience with 17 players who competed at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.Six players Olivia Chance, Victoria Esson, Nadia Olla, Paige Satchell, Sarah Morton and Stephanie Skilton are all selected for their first FIFA Women's World Cup, while Hannah Wilkinson has recovered from a serious knee injury to earn her place. The squad has six players – Ria Percival, Abby Erceg, Ali Riley, Betsy Hassett, Katie Duncan and Annalie Longo (with Rosie White, 99 caps, hoping to bring up her century against the USA) with more than 100 A internationals for New Zealand."I am really happy with the group," said Sermanni. "We have a good balance of experienced players, who have been there and know what it is all about, and we have some young up and coming players to complement that."Those experienced players are very important for this tournament," said Sermanni. "For this particular cycle, including the Olympics, it may be the last one at this level so it makes it critical for them. I know they are all keen to go out with a good impression."The FIFA Women's World Cup will be staged from 7 June to 7 July across nine cities in France. The World No 19 Football Ferns will take on World No 5 Canada, World No 8 the Netherlands and World No 46 Cameroon in Group E.Sermanni praised Wilkinson's determination to come back from an ACL injury she suffered six months ago to earn her place in her third FIFA Women's World Cup. Sermanni is pleased to have the 26-year-old striker, who has scored 25 goals for New Zealand, back in the side."She has done magnificently well," said Sermanni. "In terms of her work ethic, her focus and the way she has gone about her recovery. It has been a model for any young player looking to come back from a serious injury. I caught up with her last week and she is in fantastic shape. We still need to be careful with her, but she is looking good at this stage."A number of players have come back from international retirement or breaks from the game to earn their place in the squad for France. Sarah Gregorius, Abby Erceg, Katie Duncan and perhaps most notably Emma Kete make another World Cup following a spell away from the team."Emma's comeback is a great lesson in maturity and how you can really play your way back in. If you are really focused, work hard and look to do the right things, you have got an opportunity. She has come back into the fold after being away from the team for a long time, but she has shown her intent to be a part of this squad."Sermanni said from a coaching perspective, telling the players who have missed out on selection is the worst part of the job."Everybody talks about the players who make it and their work ethic but the same can be said for the players who have missed out. They have all put in the same level of effort and dedication. It is the toughest job you have as a coach, particularly when it comes to major tournaments."Sermanni, who has been to four FIFA Women's World Cups in his career, said there was a real excitement within the group as they count down to the event."We are all really looking forward to it," he said. "Particularly in Europe. We'll get crowds who are knowledgeable and appreciate good football, great organisation and good stadiums. I think this will be the best World Cup so far and also the most competitive one."Football Ferns squad for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France (Club, Country, Caps and Goals)CJ Bott (Vittsjo GIK, SWE) 16, 1Katie Bowen (Utah Royals, USA) 59, 3Olivia Chance (Everton FC, ENG) 11, 0Daisy Cleverley (University of California, USA) 8, 2Katie Duncan (Onehunga Sports) 122, 1Abby Erceg (North Carolina Courage, USA) 135, 6Victoria Esson (Avaldsnes, NOR)...
