Have you ever caught yourself saying, "This is just who I am," as if it's a life sentence? That's exactly the mindset I'm challenging in our latest episode. We often hide behind this phrase to dodge personal growth, holding onto it like a security blanket that shields us from the great unknown of change. Through my own confession of being a self-proclaimed "terrible driver" and how I confronted this self-imposed label with encouragement from my husband, I invite listeners to join me in shedding these limiting beliefs. It's about facing the fears that fuel our resistance to change and discovering the freedom that comes with self-improvement and growth.Transforming our identity isn't just a lofty ideal—it's a daily choice, an ongoing journey that we can embark on with determination and support. In this heart-to-heart, I underscore our power to redefine ourselves and engage with the world. It's about seizing each day as a new canvas, painting a picture of who we want to be. Life transitions, aren't they just the scariest? From moving cities to changing jobs, I, Michael Maassel, have been there, felt that gut-wrenching fear, and come out the other side. In this episode, I share my journey through several significant life transitions and how, against all odds, I embraced change and found strength in my recovery from addiction. I'm not saying it was a cakewalk, but with a robust support system and faith over fear, even the most daunting transitions can be navigated with grace. In the second half, we switch gears and tackle those life transitions that blindside you, like health challenges, including COVID. I delve into my personal experiences and unpack how acceptance rather than resentment has been vital in these situations. And just like in the first half, the mantra remains the same - lean on your support system. It's about meeting life's unexpected turns with courage and resilience. So, are you ready to reflect on your life transitions and discover strategies to navigate them better? Then this episode is just for you. Remember, it's not about the changes life throws at us, but how we react to them that truly matters. For over 50 years, Harmony Foundation has worked as a nonprofit to serve those seeking recovery from substance addictions. Mara is in recovery... so is her daughter. Both of them work in the recovery field. This is a fascinating story of dependency, sobriety, and a dedication to supporting the addict that still struggles.Inspired by her own sobriety journey over the past 15 years, Mara Lehnert has combined her lifelong experience as a successful entrepreneur and business owner with her passion for helping other alcoholics and addicts find their way to a life of recovery. In 2005, under the training of the late and great interventionist Howie Madigan, Mara began her career as an interventionist and has since performed more than 900 interventions, with a 95% success rate. While doing interventions, Mara was also the director of Intervention Services for Harmony Foundation in Estes Park, Colorado, where she worked from 2005 to 2012. In 2011, spotting a much needed and missing niche — transitional living for alcoholics and addicts — Mara began working on a new model for slower integration back into the real world following treatment. In 2012, she founded Choice House Companies in Louisville, Colorado, for men. Within six months, the original house had become six recovery homes, and Ladies’ Choice House in Lafayette was born. In 2015, again recognizing another missing niche, Mara opened The Lookout Boulder, with the assistance from Colorado Rockies co-owner Charlie Monfort. The Lookout combined substance abuse and mental health treatment. The three divisions of Choice House companies regularly served an average of 30 clients at a time.Five years later, on July 15th, 2017, Mara sold Choice House Companies to a new group, Choice Health Inc., to continue growing her legend while allowing her to go back to her core passion of interventions, consultations, and referral servicing as a primary focus.Mara has presented at national conferences for the past 13 years on the Love First method of intervention, The Executive Addict, and Ethics for Sober Living. She also contributes greatly to the criminal justice system, working towards treating rather than criminalizing people suffering from substance use disorders. Mara has been a Boulder County resident for most of her life and resides in Lafayette near her two children.

This week, we focus on a story you may have missed due to the pandemic: the recent attack on Sikh worshippers in Afghanistan, which left 25 dead. To discuss the story and a local community response, I spoke with Priscilla Martinez, of the Nations and Tribes in Harmony Foundation, and Adarsh Khalsa, of the Raj Khalsa Sikh Gurdwara. These longtime collaborators have worked together many times to stand up for religious freedom and inter-religious solidarity in times of tragedy, and share an obvious love and admiration for one another. We also hear learn how Adarsh found Sikhism after growing up in a nonreligious Jewish family in Brooklyn, and how Priscilla - who had a strong Catholic upbringing in Texas - was attracted to Islam. Harmony's sole purpose is to ensure that schoolgirls between the ages of 12 -18 across South Africa have access to free feminine hygiene products on a monthly basis. The Harmony Foundation improves knowledge, comfort and security, ensuring there's a sustainable supply of feminine hygiene products for those that need them. The Trailblazers Club will do as much as we can to make a significant impact on these young women's lives and reduce the difficulties and hardships they face through this very simple intervention. Just so you are aware of some of the social implications of this issue. 2.1 million young girls, between the ages of 12 and 18 who are living below the poverty line in South Africa, have to resort to using old clothes, rags and newspapers because they cannot afford sanitary towels. Girls who cannot afford pads or tampons miss approximately five days of school a month – that's 60 missed school days a year. And that is 20% of their education gone. The Trailblazers club is aiming to raise £40,000 which will impact over 4000 young girls for an entire year. I hope you enjoy this episode team.  It will really open your eyes to a world many of us wouldn't think about.  Living in London my entire life I take for granted so many things.  I just hope we can raise as much money as possible.  Follow the Trailblazers Club on Instagram @thetrailblazersclub17 to follow our training and charitable campaign over the next 8/10 months.
