Episode 141: Money, Power & The Stories We Tell Ourselves with Laura Corbiani Money. Power. Self-worth. For so many of us—especially women—these words feel loaded. We've absorbed messages about money from a young age, often without realizing it. Some of us were taught that talking about money is rude or greedy. Others internalized the belief that wanting more meant taking from someone else. But what if talking about money openly could actually be empowering? In this week's episode of The Innovative Therapist Podcast, I sat down with Certified Financial Planner Laura Corbiani to dive deep into the mindset blocks, money scripts, and hidden narratives that keep so many of us stuck. Money, Power, and the Stories We Carry Laura and I have been talking for a while about having this conversation because, let's be real—money stress feels higher than ever. In this episode, I take you on a journey through my recent trip to Finland, a country renowned for being the happiest place in the world for five consecutive years. I share my experiences and observations, mainly focusing on the cultural nuances I encountered, such as the surprising lack of eye contact among the locals and the stories behind that. Before our trip, a friend warned us that Finns tend to avoid eye contact, which struck me as odd given the country's reputation for happiness. However, I soon discovered that making eye contact often led to people looking away, and engaging in deeper conversations revealed the warmth and beauty of the Finnish people. This prompted me to explore the historical context behind this behaviour, leading to a fascinating discussion with our shuttle driver. Throughout the episode, I encourage listeners to examine their stories and consider whether these narratives are truly theirs to carry. I emphasize the importance of recognizing and releasing old stories that no longer serve us, allowing space for new possibilities and growth. To support listeners in their journey of self-discovery and story transformation, I introduce my program, "The Stories We Tell Ourselves," which offers tools like hypnosis, subliminals, and EFT tapping to help release stuck emotions and reshape personal narratives. This week Hilary Saxton explores the complexities of decision-making, discussing the reasons why people often struggle to make choices. She looks into the psychological aspects of indecisiveness, including fear of failure, decision fatigue, and the influence of personal stories. Hilary points out the importance of understanding one's personality type and the impact of habits on decision-making. She provides practical strategies for overcoming indecisiveness and encourages listeners to take action towards their goals.   Takeaways Not making a decision is a decision in itself. Unclosed loops in our minds can be distracting. Fear of failure can become a habitual response. Understanding personality types can aid in decision-making. Decision fatigue affects our ability to make choices. Eliminating basic decisions can free up mental energy. Indecisiveness can be overcome with practice. We often fear loss more than we desire gain. The stories we tell ourselves shape our decisions. Taking small actions can build confidence in decision-making.   Chapters 00:00    The Importance of Decision Making 07:28    Understanding Decision Fatigue 10:19    Overcoming Indecisiveness 15:50    The Role of Information in Decision Making 19:12    The Stories We Tell Ourselves 26:11    Taking Action and Building Confidence   https://hilarysaxton.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

First off, I am not a huge fan of the word failure because we are never failing, and there is no such thing as failure, only feedback.  In this episode, we discuss:  1) How do you keep lif'ing when it feels like life is really hard?  Do you meet it with a ton of resistance, pushback and fighting, which only decreases your ability to meet yourself with compassion or grace? 2) Remember that everything is data; everything is teaching us something, and we decide the meaning of it all. In this episode, I wanted to share some thoughts on the word identity, what it means and how we create it daily.  On a personal level, identity often refers to a person's sense of self, meaning how they view themselves compared to others. Identity encompasses the values people hold, which dictate the choices they make.  It is who you are and how you see yourself. In this episode, we discuss:  1) Your identity is not based on whether you are motivated, disciplined, or deserving.  Your identity is who you are, what you do, and what you have accomplished.  In this episode, I wanted to share some thoughts on what is actually blocking you from finding, unlocking and using your OUTSPOKEN voice. In this episode I am sharing 10 tips of how to unlock and use your voice and some of the things that are holding you back might not be what you think.  In this episode, we discuss:  1) It requires getting quiet and muting all other things that are distractions. Getting stuck in a comparison loop of how you think your voice should sound, what you should say etc, will distract you from finding your authentic voice. This is what the mute button is for, to help you find your voice.  2) You can't “consciously” change something that you don't subconsciously believe is possible. Those limiting beliefs can be changed at the root and seen as a superpower when you unpack them and understand them. Your subconscious mind was only ever trying to keep you safe and protected.     3) You will never be ready to start, because starting anything is new and scary and definitely “unfamiliar” and our subconscious mind will always choose the safe/familiar discomfort it knows vs the discomfort it doesn't know OUTSPOKEN https://www.marshavanw.com/outspoken2023   The Stories We Tell Ourselves (on presale) https://www.marshavanw.com/StoriesWeTellOurselves Marsha Vanwynsberghe — NLP Storytelling Trainer, Author, Speaker, and Podcaster Marsha is the 6-time Bestselling Author of “When She Stopped Asking Why”.  She shares her lessons as a parent who dealt with teen substance abuse that tore her family unit apart. In this episode, we discuss:  1) Sometimes our brain can't tell the difference between a bear, an annoying client, or a tailgating car. This is when the “90-second rule” comes in handy. According to Harvard brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, ninety seconds is all it takes to identify an emotion and allow it to dissipate while you simply notice it. 2) Emotions operate as urgent signalling devices. How can you step back, zoom out and start to see what this message, the emotion wants you to know? The emotions feed the stories and the stories feed the emotions. By zooming out, or playing out the feelings of the best case scenario, we are start to create a new loop of emotions that it has all worked out better than we can imagine. How we view ourselves, other people, and the world around us has a huge impact on the emotions we feel, the choices we make, and the quality of the lives we lead. These are our perspectives, and they're the foundation our lives are built on…which is why changing them is so freakin' hard. In this episode, Forrest and Rick explore what perspectives are, what a healthy perspective looks like in practice, and how we can deliberately shift our perspectives over time. Specific topics include unpacking where perspectives come from, getting better at identifying when a perspective starts to affect our behavior, and thinking of ourselves as “rivers” rather than “rocks.” By the end of this episode, you'll learn the key skills you need to change the views that have been holding you back. Neurodharma Course! Every day since then, he's made it his goal to learn how to create good health and vitality and then share what he's learned with others so they too might benefit. That journey led to him writing a book at age 62 titled Age Well and Feel Great: The Proven Path to Solving the Aging Puzzle. Along his lifelong quest for good health and fitness and vitality, he's finished dozens of marathons including having a 2:39 Boston Marathon personal best, 9 ironman triathlons including 3 finishes at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, numerous sports therapy and strength and conditioning certifications, as well as having owned and operated a gait analysis lab in partnership with a sports physician. Above it all, every step of his journey has been focused on becoming truly healthy and aging well, so he could extend not only his lifespan, but more importantly, his healthspan. His ultimate goal is to be able to do what he enjoys with those who matter the most, right up until his last day. As his book attests, Al has always been passionate about sharing all that he's learned with others. Episode 230: Your Story Matters - Interview Amy Chandler Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. Every once in awhile I find another story practitioner who preaches the same truths I teach. Birds of a feather - another who understands this simple but often overlooked idea of how much our stories matter, how powerful we can be when we realize the power in our stories, and our ability to write them with intention. Today is one of those days. Amy Chandler is an entrepreneur who helps people become an active agent in their story. She is the founder of a non profit called My Story Matters, that started forming about 15 years ago - one chapter at a time. She understands her mission is to empower people with the tools and resources they need to write their own story. As they do so, they choose to claim and create the future they want to achieve. She knows that within each of us is a unique skill set designed to help us achieve far more than we realize. Tune into the audio program for our talk - because Amy has been to correctional facilities, in elementary schools, in high schools, all over the place helping people tell their stories, and I think you'll like hearing about her adventures and seeing what they tell you about the importance of your own story. I asked Amy questions like: Amy, let's start off with what you do in My Story Matters. What exactly do you do and who do you do it with? In your work, what stories can you share of watching people step into their power as they own their stories? Let's talk about intentional living. What is your take on that - specifically about healing? Share any specific story of this happening? You talk about claiming and creating a life of miracles. What does that mean to you? One of the quotes you often share is “When we give voice and energy to our war stories they consume us. When we give voice and energy to our champion story it transforms us.” This sounds a lot like what I call - THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES. Let's talk about this a bit. I'd really like to hear about what you call, "dealing with life's detours through the growth zone” Let's end with some stories of transformation that you have witnessed as the people you have worked with have stepped up to find, tell, accept their stories. Find Amy: amy@mystorymatters.org http://www.mystorymatters.org/ (www.mystorymatters.org) http://www.safeharborscourse.com/ (www.safeharborscourse.com) @mystorymatters Why do our stories matter? I think they matter on multiple levels. They matter to us individually because they are literally the playing out of our lives. They matter to us because we want to have adventure, fun, love, accomplishment, satisfaction, growth. They matter to us because if our lives don't matter, the foundation of purpose starts to dissolve. Our stories also matter from a simple space of empowerment. When you know who you are and the power you have to create just what you want, you realize you are powerful, you matter, and that ties us into why our stories matter to each other. Our stories matter to each other because we are all in the same giant play. Our characters interact, we benefit from one another, we share with one another, we hurt one another sometimes, we set off domino effects everyday that matter to many people (in kind and positive ways as well as cruel and difficult ways), we shine a light on the way ahead as we share our stories and support one another. No one does life alone, we all need each other, and like it or not, acknowledge it or not, our lives are woven together like a tapestry. We are almost inseparable. Our living, our loving, our growing, our falling down, our being, matters deeply to the world. Challenge for the week: Take the opportunity to let someone in your life know how much their life affects you. Share this episode with just one person this week - more if you're willing to go the extra mile. And remember that Your...

On this episode of Estimate Rocket Radio, we are joined by Tom Reber of the Contractor Fight for a brilliant part 2 of The Stories We Tell Ourselves! We chat with Tom about the kinds of stories business owners tell themselves that often give way to limiting beliefs and abortive projects. Tom reminds us that Thoughts become Beliefs, Beliefs become Actions, and Actions become Results. And results mean time with family, disciplined lifestyle, health, happiness, and...money. The slippery slope can work in your favor if you start with the right thoughts! If you haven't already, you need to listen to part one that was released previous to this episode!Learn more about The Contractor Fight and the Mile High Profit Summit at thecontractorfight.com

It's no secret that we internalize other people's stories about us as truth. So much so that oftentimes we believe what they're saying and create it as part of our reality.   My guest, Ana McRae, is challenging this narrative, and shares why it's so important to look deeply at the stories we believe to be true about ourselves. It impacts our happiness, our relationships, and our entire lives.   Ana is a life & business success coach for high level CEOs and aspiring entrepreneurs who want to accomplish more in life & business. After quitting her corporate job in the middle of a pandemic, starting her business with two kids under the age of 5, and scaling it beyond 6 figures working 15 hours a week while converting a school bus from start to finish into a luxury tiny house on wheels to travel full time, Ana firmly believes that whatever your dream life looks like, it is 100% possible for you when you go all in.    Through her 1:1 coaching programs she supports ambitious women with getting clear on what they actually want, overcoming their limiting beliefs, elevating their energy, and staying focused on their wildest goals, so that they can lead thriving businesses & live fulfilling lives too.   We get into: [1:00] What happiness means to Ana [8:30] Debunking societal narratives around success and working hard [11:15] The biggest misconceptions entrepreneurs have about happiness [20:00] Key mindset shifts for entrepreneurs to make to achieve more happiness [29:00] How the conversation around happiness changes from generation to generation   Want to chat about launching or growing your podcast? This week in a follow up of "The Stories We Tell Ourselves," Pastor Erwin McManus navigates the flip side of the negative stories we tell ourselves. Whether you resonate most with the story of the victim, martyr, innocent, or the hero - there is another story you are meant to tell! In 2 Corinthians 1, we learn that God intends to use the moments we have been treated as victims to bring healing to others who have walked through similar situations. We have the ability to turn our pain into purpose as we stop seeing ourselves as the victim and instead embrace the story of the healer. The story of Abraham unfolds in Genesis chapter 2, as God calls him to leave the comfort of his home. Abraham could have embraced the story of the martyr, believing that he was the only one called to sacrifice for a new future. But Pastor Erwin challenges us to follow Abraham's example by embracing the story of a pioneer. Caleb embraced the story of the activist instead of the innocent in Joshua chapter 14. When Joshua offered him an out because of his old age, Caleb chose to embrace the promise of God and lived a life of courage up until the very end of his life. Jesus, the most powerful human in history, took the posture of a servant instead of the hero in John 13. He washed Peter's feet and led with humility when he could have ruled with dominance. If you've recognized the negative story you tend to get stuck in, this message will give you the wisdom you need to turn the script around and instead, live the story of the healer, pioneer, activist, or the servant.

In this episode, we discuss how to cultivate friendships as an adult - the fears that may go into making new friends & how to overcome them by being ourselves, staying open & trusting in the magical powers of quantum physics (also known as – the law of attraction.) We discuss the wavy line of balance between too much hibernation & over socialization. We distinguish the difference between time spent alone checking out in avoidant patterns vs. creating quality time with ourselves where we are doing activities that really ignite our spirit. We talk about releasing shame when we do go into those times of more avoidant patterns with ourselves – checking out through food, tv, mindless scrolling & so on & so forth.. And we discuss how to open ourselves to having more compassion for ourselves & our process. Kelli shares her story of what it's been like finding friends in a newly sober lifestyle in her new city of London & Bailey talks about her journey moving from a drinking lifestyle to completely changing her lifestyle to align with her internal growth. We discuss the deaths & rebirths that come up along this ever-changing, ever-evolving & expansive journey into really knowing ourselves. We discuss prioritizing our spiritual, mental, & physical health by getting into alignment in the mornings before we go out into the world. We talk about the importance of filling our own cup first, making new friends as an adult & disconnecting from the social world around us when we need to take time out for ourselves. We talk about how to create quality time with ourselves over time spent checking out or in avoidant patterns. We also talk about how to release any shame around those kinds of patterns. We explore the parts of ourselves that want to go inward & retreat from socialization and also dive into the parts of ourselves that are craving connection more than ever before. We talk about ways to cultivate connection in our lives during a time when it may not be the most obvious thing. We explore new ways of finding connections & creating friendships in our lives. And then for those of us who are feeling like we need to tune out of the social noise in our world, we discuss what that can look like & how to start tuning down the social engagements to relax into the hibernations of winter. Episode 10: The Stories We Tell Ourselves with Peter Axelson Peter Axelson leads Garnet Consulting and has worked as an external consultant in training, coaching and organizational development for more than 35 years. Clients tell him that they bring him back because of his high standards for client service, his focus on behavioral change and business results and his very practical approach to helping people learn and grow.  On this podcast, we've listened to a really interesting variety of leaders sharing their stories about a particular leadership challenge they've faced, how they've overcome that challenge and what drives them forward during times of change and adversity.  The next two episodes of Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva are going to be a bit different. This next conversation will be divided into two episodes and they will also be the final episodes for Season One.  I wanted to take this opportunity to take a look back, reflect and go a bit deeper on a few themes that have emerged from Season One. The first one is about stories and how the stories we have running in our heads can either propel us forward or get in the way of our success. But before we get into unpacking the concept of stories and its impact on behavior and results, let's look back on a few episodes where my guests pointed to the ways stories have impacted their leadership journey…   Dilip DaSilva the Founder and CEO of VDX.tv and Exponential sums up his experience of stories this way… “I've realized that often the hurdles you personally have just things in your own mind.”   Nathan Knight the Director of People Development at Better explains how stories can mislead us… “The other part was this myth I had created in my mind we tell ourselves stories to make sense of situations. And sometimes those stories are not productive.”   Sanjit Sethi the President of the Minneapolis College of Art & Design talks about reframing our stories… “The goal is to take a disability or take what seems like a disability and reframe it as an asset.”   Mandy Pulliam the Chief Medical Officer at Renovia, Inc. gives a vivid example of rejecting someone else's story about her… “I wanted to apologize so many times during that surgery when he was making me feel bad, but I decided that I was only going to apologize if I had done something wrong.” Key Takeaways from this Episode: Our stories directly influence our behavior which drives results Stories fit into two categories: stories about me, stories about other people and stories about how things are When there is a result we're not happy with (our performance, a relationship that's gone sideways, a conflict within the organization) we need to look back on what behaviors have contributed to that result and from there what are the stories or beliefs we have that are driving those behaviors Ask opened ended questions to uncover the stories influencing our behaviors It boils down to self-awareness – you need to catch yourself in your stories as they happen To achieve a different result, our behaviors need to change and therefore we must adopt new stories Tap into curiosity to uncover your stories Stories are usually deeply unconscious and sometimes reflect what we have always fundamentally believed Assumptions and prejudices about people who are different from us can unconsciously shape our stories To learn more about my work in executive coaching, leadership development and team effectiveness check out my website, connect with me on LinkedIn or email me at winnie@winnifred.org.
