One of  kind...

Who is Stan Smith? A tennis legend, humanitarian, and... a shoe! Before Djokovic or Federer, McEnroe or Borg, there was Stan Smith. A brilliant player, his success on the tennis court in the ‘70s led to Adidas naming its now iconic tennis shoe after him.  But there is much more to Stan Smith than tennis success and shoes. For though he set out to be the best, in the end that wasn't enough. He wanted to do good as well. Join Matthew Sherwood as he discusses the new UNINTERRUPTED documentary Who is Stan Smith? with its director, Danny Lee. They discuss the sacrifice Stan Smith made to improve conditions for his fellow tennis players, the help he gave to South African author, Mark Mathabane, and what happened when Stan went behind the Iron Curtain to play the controversial Romanian superstar, Ilie Nastase. Who is Stan Smith? is a feelgood film about the man who is most known for the shoe, but who deserves far greater recognition for his humility, kindliness, and self-giving. Steven Blush's new book Bustin' Balls (Feral Press, 2020) tells the strange but true story of World Team Tennis (1974-1978) that attempted to transform the prim and proper individual sport of tennis into a rowdy blue-collar league. Billie Jean King and her partners merged feminism and civil rights with queer lifestyle, pop culture, and a progressive political agenda to create a dazzling platform for the finest tennis players of the day to become overnight stars. Filled with rare photographs and images of WTT ephemera, this book recounts King's vision of a competitive tennis league with mixed-sex teams and looser rules that encouraged fast and aggressive play propelled tennis into a television fixture and the players into household names. Bustin' Balls presents in-depth stories and history of the WTT and tennis in the 1970s, including Evonne Goolagong who fought racism throughout her life as the first indigenous woman to win at Wimbledon and a member of the Pittsburgh Triangles. Chris Evert of the Los Angeles Strings became America’s sweetheart. Billie Jean King played for the Philadelphia Freedoms at the height of Bicentennial fervor and was feted by Elton John in the song, “Philadelphia Freedom.” While tabloids followed the nightlife exploits and made pin-ups of Ilie Nastase, Jimmy Connors, and Vitas Gerulitis. The agenda includes an overview of international business, things to consider if planning enter global marketplace, resources, and more. I'd like to share a story. The Oregon-based athletic company was one of the first American companies to outsource most of its manufacturing to Asia. The company was fortunate enough to have had early exposure to operating in foreign locales when they began importing Tiger Shoes (now called Asics). Tiger provided Nike with plenty of lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid, which helped the company in its nascent efforts to sell Nike overseas. Like other successful global marketers, Nike had a visual logo that transcended language. Concentrating on using the logo rather than the name, Nike began by endorsing international athletes like Romanian tennis player Ilie Nastase, acclimatizing foreign populations to the Nike logo. The company used these athlete endorsements as the primary marketing tool for global expansion. Nike broadened the company vision from running shoes and began to brand athletic wear with the Nike name. Choosing to endorse cricket, soccer, golf, and other smaller sports strengthened the brand, equated it with sports success, and ultimately provided name recognition in every sports venue around the world. This is not a one size fits all because there are lots of small to medium size businesses that go global and they do it in different ways. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Racists turned back the clock a quarter century to re-visit the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Whites made time for documentaries, articles, retrospectives and commentary on the lawless negro chaos that followed the acquittal of four Race Soldiers who bludgeoned Rodney King, who died in 2012. Many submit that the Los Angeles Police Department has improved dramatically over the last 25 years. This is also the second anniversary of Freddie Gray's 2015 death and the subsequent unrest in Baltimore, Maryland. Simultaneously, New York City and other regions debuted body cameras for officers this week, so that each traffic stop, arrest, and shooting will be archived. France's Marine Le Pen qualified for May's runoff election to determine the country's next president. The greatest tennis player in the world, Serena Williams, publicized her pregnancy only to be Racially Terrorized. Ilie Nastase, former top-ranked player and current Fed Cup captain, speculated about the amount of melanin Williams's child will have - the father is White. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Results of tennis matches take a back-seat on this week’s Tennis Podcast after the behaviour of Ilie Nastase over the weekend and the return of Maria Sharapova imminent following a 15-month suspension for a failed drugs test. The former French Open champion and BBC presenter Sue Barker joins Tennis Podcast hosts Catherine Whitaker and David Law to expresses her shock and disappointment at Nastase’s ‘unforgivable’ behaviour. The Telegraph’s Tennis Correspondent Simon Briggs is a guest from Bucharest en route to Stuttgart in Germany, where Sharapova’s comeback will commence. Briggs details the ‘edginess’ felt by himself and the rest of the British media when the Nastase Fed Cup furore began to bubble over, and what to expect around the Sharapova story over the coming week. Pod presenters Whitaker and Law have their say about a deeply uncomfortable few days which culminated in Nastase being banned from ITF events pending an investigation, and the bizarre comments of Sharapova’s agent Max Eisenbud.... TFP 024: Stephen Warboys – Playing Jimmy Connors and Becoming the Top Junior in the World

My guest on today's show is Stephen Warboys. Stephen became the #1 Junior player in the world and peaked at #73 on the ATP Tour. Throughout his career, Stephen has gone head-to-head against some of the biggest legends to ever play the game, including Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas, Bjorn Borg, and Ilie Nastase. Stephen is currently a Head Tennis Professional at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. He took the job after his professional career and has been there since 1986. Stephen retired at the age of 22 after turning pro when he was 16. Despite what many consider to be a short career, Stephen consistently competed at the highest level of the game against hall of fame players. He also reached the Junior Wimbledon final and the top of the junior ranks in 1971. Stephen was born in Essex (UK) and currently resides in Toronto. I first heard about Stephen when listening to him commentate on TSN's International Sports Report radio show. Stephen's expertise is a great asset to the show, and once I heard him speak I knew he'd be a great guest. I had a fantastic time interviewing Stephen, and enjoyed hearing his insights on the game when he was on tour, what he thinks of the game now, and his amazing experience against the greatest players of all time. Fira i rojalistisk anda eller spela Sex Pistol’s ”God save the Queen”… Sverige lämnar 1991 in ansökan om medlemskap i EU.
