In this episode of The Canadian Investor Podcast, Simon and Dan break down the latest short report targeting Gildan Activewear and the major allegations around channel stuffing, receivables factoring, and whether the company’s recent growth may be less durable than it appears. They also look back at some of the most notable short reports in Canadian market history, including Shopify, Dollarama, Canadian Tire, Home Capital Group, Exchange Income Corp, FaceDrive, goeasy, and others. Some short sellers were completely wrong, some were early, and a few ended up being surprisingly accurate. To wrap things up, Simon shares a stock on his radar: Intuitive Surgical. He explains why the company’s robotic surgery platform, recurring revenue model, large installed base, and potential AI advantage make it an interesting name to watch after a pullback. Tickers discussed: GIL.TO, SHOP.TO, DOL.TO, CTC.A.TO, EIF.TO, GSY.TO, ISRG, FFH.TO, BIP.UN.TO, LSPD.TO Questrade custom indexing contest: This information is for educational purposes only. Is memory truly cyclical, or has the AI data center boom changed the rules? In Part 2 of the How CSI Invests series, Nick and Kasey tackle one of the most debated questions among semiconductor investors by walking through the investment thesis checklist step that asks: what kind of business cycle does this company actually have?Rather than labeling companies simply cyclical or non-cyclical, the framework breaks businesses into short cycle, long cycle, and non-cyclical categories based on how closely revenue tracks changes in GDP growth. A short cycle business sees revenue move quickly with the economy, while a long cycle or non-cyclical business continues growing steadily regardless of macro conditions. The traditional eleven sectors of the economy do not map cleanly onto this framework, and Nick and Kasey explain why semiconductors, SaaS, telecom carriers, and ad-driven internet platforms can all fall in very different places even within the same official sector. The episode applies this framework to six real companies. Micron is examined as a short cycle business currently in year two of a strong memory upcycle, with historical precedent for these cycles to run several years. Intuitive Surgical is discussed as a long cycle healthcare hardware business tied to product generation launches. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is presented as a genuinely non-cyclical pharmaceutical company with steady growth. NextEra Energy represents the utilities sector and one of the longest cycles of all. Credo Technologies, a newer public company, is evaluated as likely short cycle, with a look at its fiscal 2027 guidance calling for eighty percent revenue growth and fifty percent adjusted profit margins. Finally, Palo Alto Networks is broken down as a cyclical business once acquisitions like CyberArk and Chronosphere are stripped out, with commentary on CEO Nikesh Arora's view that cybersecurity is constantly chasing the next emerging risk. The episode closes with the revenue analysis questions CSI uses for every company: who the primary customers are, whether revenue is concentrated, what is actually being monetized, why customers choose to spend money with that company over alternatives, and what risks could disrupt the business. Understanding these fundamentals is what allows an investor to tune out noisy debates about whether a cycle has "changed forever" and instead build real conviction in a business. For in-depth stock research and the Semiconductor Insider membership, visit chipstockinvestor.com.

Venture Unlocked: The playbook for venture capital managers.
Follow me @samirkaji for my thoughts on the venture market, with a focus on the continued evolution of the VC landscape.Welcome back to another episode of Venture Unlocked, the podcast that takes you behind the scenes of the business of venture capital. In this episode, I'm joined by three deep tech investors and friends of the show, Nate Williams, Sunil Nagaraj, and Guy Perelmuter, for a roundtable on the state of deep tech and the changing venture landscape. We dig into what deep tech really means today, why it's suddenly attracting so much capital, and how economics, government tailwinds, and AI as a “killer app” have pulled these once niche technologies into the mainstream. We also explore the growing concentration of capital in a handful of hyperscale winners, the tension between consensus vs. non-consensus investing, and what all of this means for emerging managers, LPs, and founders operating at the zero-to-one stage. Thanks for listening to another episode of Venture Unlocked. I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Nate, Sunil, and Guy. If you'd like to get Venture Unlocked content straight to your inbox, go to ventureunlocked.substack.com and sign up, or head over to Apple Podcasts or Spotify and subscribe. Peter watches Mad Max: Fury Road for the first time in decades, and Eden — who has seen it at least a dozen times — watches the black-and-chrome edition alongside him. Peter finds the opening act almost too uncomfortable to watch, given its uncomfortable parallels to the current political moment, but gets fully on board the moment the sandstorm hits. They dig into what makes the film a masterpiece of practical filmmaking, why Furiosa holds up better than the prequel, and what it means that George Miller also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet.SHOW NOTESCheck-in / What we've been up to — Eden is riding their cargo bike in 35mph Iowa wind gusts; Peter is heading to Austin for an Intuitive Surgical robotics event. Eden vents about 18 months of accessibility compliance work being ignored by faculty who don't read their emails.Peter's picks — Finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 6 (fun but disposable, and the online fandom's intensity baffles him); finished Season 2 of A Man on the Inside (Ted Danson and his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen falling for each other on screen — highly recommended); Taskmaster Series 21 has started, featuring Kumail Nanjiani. Big metal week — Peter covers a stack of new releases: Slave Machine by Nervosa (vicious all-female death-thrash from Brazil); Too Fast to Die by ArchSpire (potential album of the year if not for Neurosis); new Inferi album featuring departing drummer Spencer Moore; Descent by Immolation; and Master Boot Record's first live album Realtime Execution. Eden's picks — Eden is scrobbling again on Last.fm and shares a chaotic top-four week: Portishead, Rebecca Black (Salvation EP praised as a stone-cold classic), Neurosis, and new discovery Javiera Mena, a Chilean electro-pop artist. Also watched two bad movies with the bad movie crew: Firecracker (notable for a truly unhinged sex scene) and American Cyborg: Steel Warrior ("Children of Men with a $13 budget"). Currently reading a 3,500-page Chinese web novel called Long Awaited Feelings / My Feelings Can Wait. Why Peter struggled with the opening act — Peter found Immortan Joe's cult of worship uncomfortably familiar, given current events, describing it as George Miller predicting how "stupid and gullible people can be." He warmed to the film as it progressed, with the sandstorm sequence being the turning point."A perfect action film" — Eden's framing: not their favorite action film, but possibly a perfect one — no wasted frame, no wasted scene. They've seen it at least a dozen times, and this watch was the black-and-chrome edition, which Miller originally intended before the studio overruled him.Practical effects deep dive — 80–90% of the stunts were practical, shot on location in Namibia under miserable conditions. They highlight the pole-cat war boys actually swinging on moving vehicles, and the real flamethrower guitarist who was instructed not to hold the guitar too high.On the cast — Charlize Theron gets full credit for owning the film as Furiosa. Tom Hardy's near-silent, physically understated performance is praised. Nicholas Hoult's arc as Nux — going from zealot to sacrifice — is called out as the emotional hinge of the film.Frame rate trivia — Eden flags that 50–60% of the film was shot below 24fps, with Miller manipulating frame rates shot-by-shot to control tension and legibility.Furiosa comparison — Eden recommends the prequel but notes its heavy CGI and green screen make it feel cheaper and less embodied than Fury Road. Peter says he's now interested to watch it.The Babe 2 revelation — The episode ends on Eden's genuine disbelief that the director of Fury Road also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet, and a fun piece of trivia: Immortan Joe's actor, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also played Toecutter, the villain of the original Mad Max.
This episode examines recent cybersecurity incidents affecting healthcare organizations, including breaches at Intuitive Surgical, Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, and Innovative Pharmacy Packaging Corp, alongside a sophisticated job scam targeting professionals. Key takeaways include the critical importance of phishing training, network monitoring, vendor risk assessments, and reducing detection dwell time. The discussion reinforces that most breaches stem from preventable issues like misconfigurations, blind spots, and social engineering vulnerabilities.

About Whitney Faires: Whitney Faires is an internationally recognized executive coach, keynote speaker, and leadership advisor with 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Formerly Chief of Staff to the CFO at Intuitive Surgical, she led high-impact organizational health initiatives, launched global leadership development programs, and coached rising professionals into senior roles. Her multifaceted career spans sales, finance, and commercial operations, where she spearheaded the creation of a $2 billion international leasing portfolio. As the founder of Whitney Faires Coaching, she developed the Courageous Leader Roadmap—a practical approach for leaders to show up authentically, navigate adversity, and drive meaningful results. She is an ICF-accredited PCC coach and is passionate about helping leaders elevate their influence and build high-performing teams. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Whitney Faires discuss: Leading from default instead of intention Defining a leadership identity before leading others Connection as a competitive advantage Why tough conversations separate great leaders Preparing people for leadership before promotion Key Takeaways: Define your leadership identity by committing to six or eight specific principles you will share with your team about what they can expect from you. Ask yourself where you want to be in five or ten years, what work you enjoy most, and what skill gaps you want to develop before pursuing a leadership role. Call two or three trusted colleagues and ask about their transition into leadership, the skills they had to learn, and the hardest parts of the job. Assume the best intent and seek to understand before reacting when frustration rises in a leadership moment. "I think leaders are oftentimes going so fast that they're leading from default, a bit lost, a bit uncertain about who they need to be right now.” — Whitney Faires Connect with Whitney Faires: Website: https://whitneyfaires.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-faires-14955a38/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whitney_faires See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Most professionals chase the next promotion without ever asking if it's the right move. In this conversation, Kendall Berg and executive coach Whitney Faires expose the myth of the linear career path and why the most fulfilled leaders often take strategic sideways moves instead of climbing straight up. Whitney shares her Courageous Leader Roadmap, a framework for showing up with authenticity, self-awareness, and fearless communication, the traits that separate high performers from true leaders. Together, they unpack the messy middle of leadership transitions, how to navigate corporate politics without selling your soul, and why your reputation starts forming long before you enter the room. In this episode, we discuss: What are the most overlooked skills when moving from contributor to director? How can leaders build influence without self-promotion? How do you navigate corporate politics without losing authenticity? What's the right moment to make a lateral move instead of chasing a promotion? How can specific feedback requests accelerate leadership growth? What does it mean to lead courageously — and how can you start today? What's one "corporate game" rule you've learned the hard way?

Dr. Vishwa Srivastava, APAC CEO of SSI, SS Innovations International, is a leader in telesurgery, using robotic surgery to extend surgical services in underserved areas. The SSI Mantra surgical robot is used for laparoscopic surgery and offers an affordable alternative to prevailing robotic solutions without compromising quality. Telesurgery has potential in remote operations and is also revolutionizing surgical training by providing real-time expert proctoring. Vishwa explains, "My father was one of the early global pioneers in robotic cardiac surgery, and he had actually helped Intuitive Surgical back in their early days get their FDA approval. And what he recognized very quickly was that through these minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgical procedures, 20% of his patients went home the next day, 50% in two days or less, and the average length of stay was 3.2 days. So, he became convinced after they twisted his arm to launch robotic cardiac surgical programs. And Dr. Fred Moll at the time was the chairman and founder of Intuitive Surgical, and he wanted to start on the heart because it was the most complex procedure to do a beating heart, totally endoscopic, bypass surgery. And he felt that if you could do that, then everything else would be simple." "The way that we look at remote robotic surgery, or what we call telesurgery, currently, we are the only company in India that has received formal regulatory approval from the CDSCO for both teleproctoring and telesurgery. The way that we look at teleproctoring and telesurgery, it's not like one rockstar surgeon sitting in one location operating omnipresent in a hundred different locations." "With teleproctoring and telesurgery, the way that we look at it is in addition to operating and extending expertise in the remote areas of the country, we look at teleproctoring and telesurgery the same way that doctors are trained in residency where you always have an attending in the room, the junior surgeon will be operating, and the goal of the proctor or the attending surgeon is to guide the junior surgeon to maturity." #SSInnovations #RoboticSurgery #Telesurgery #CardiacProcedures #HeartSurgery #Teleproctoring #RemoteSurgery SSInnovations.com Download the transcript here

What separates good managers from leaders people line up to work for? In this energizing conversation, host Anusha sits down with Whitney Faires—internationally recognized coach, keynote speaker, and former senior executive at Intuitive Surgical who helped scale a $2B business line—to unpack the Courageous Leader Roadmap. Whitney shares the “Sunday-night test” for honest self-assessment, explains why people-first leadership outperforms results-only management, and reframes fearless communication as a practice of refusing to let fear decide what gets said—not saying everything that crosses your mind. You'll learn how to identify your leadership archetype, build judgment and self-awareness in high-stakes moments, and consistently access your power zone using personal activators (and guarding against depletors). Whitney also talks candidly about navigating guilt, competing priorities, and career pivots you didn't choose—plus how to reclaim agency by focusing on what you can control and designing growth inside any role.Whether you're managing your first team or scaling a division, this episode gives you practical prompts, mindset shifts, and repeatable routines to raise your game—and your team's.Connect with Whitney on LinkedIn or Instagram (@whitney_faires) and join her mailing list for upcoming workshops and group coaching opportunities.Thank you to Gies College of Business for Sponsoring this Podcast.
