In this different podcast for us, we talk to Justin Byam Shaw, who set up The Felix Project in 2016 after the tragic death of his 14 year old son. The charity redistributes surplus food (that would otherwise go to waste) from 539 suppliers and delivers it to almost 1,000 charities, primary schools and holiday programmes. Justin starts by describing his own career following Oxford University, his first early success, building and selling a media business, through to buying The Independent - a then failing newspaper - and turning it into the huge success it is today. The conversation then pivots to The Felix Foundation and its genesis. Justin describes the acute food waste problem in this country and the vast food poverty which surrounds us. He explains the supply and demand dynamics of food waste, the logistical challenges they have overcome, and the ways in which both organisations and people can help every day. Finally, Justin offers thoughts on the shifting sands in the world of media, advice for young people considering becoming entrepreneurs, and the why good management is often more valuable than a new idea. 8-19-21 Tonight we're 'across the pond' visiting with Ann Farrell and Gordon Baron at Lancashire Mead in Horwich, Lancashire, Great Britain. They make meads in a natural fashion, without stabilizers or finings. Gordon is a Druid and uses mead in ritual.  He wanted a pure mead for this purpose (and didn't want to put chemicals into the earth) so in 2009, he decided ‘how hard can it be?', emptied his local supermarket of honey, dumped it in a bucket with some yeast…… the rest is history!  Three years homebrewing, whilst being a tramping trucker, and an ever increasing circle of friends (strange that!) and then he met Ann in 2012.  Easter 2013, Ann figured she earned enough (self employed teacher) to keep both of them and suggested he start the meadery.  Three months later, Ann was laid off from her job, and joined Gordon at the meadery. Lancashire Mead was started in Nov 2013.  Their first mead was available for sale Feb 2014.  They expanded their space by 50% Sept 2014.  In Oct 2014 they were asked to supply Michelin restaurant L'Enclume (Owned by Michelin starred chef Simon Rogan) – and are still supplying them.  In October 2015 their product was used on BBC's Great British Menu (women's institute).  They expanded again by 100% in 2016.  They were ranked second in the UK mead chart in the Independent Newspaper.  And won their first Mead Madness medals in 2019 and second medals in 2020. Their premises are currently 5x bigger – they started with 1034 sqft, and now are at 5170 sqft. The philosophy that Gordon and Ann have at Lancashire mead is 'be natural'.In line with their spiritual beliefs, they wanted to keep their Mead as natural as possible. This means, firstly, that the honey they use is raw, unpasteurised, and un-sterilised. For the technically minded, throughout the process at their suppliers, the honey has never been heated above 44 degrees Celsius (112 Fahrenheit). It also means that throughout their process it has never been heated above 40 degrees Celsius.Secondly, it means that there are no chemical additions throughout the whole process, with the exception of the yeast nutrients which are digested along with the sugars in the honey during fermentation. They do not use “fermentation stoppers” or “stabilisers”, the yeast naturally dies off and sediments without the aid of any finings (usually animal products like isinglass). Join us as we hang out with Gordon and Ann to explore their mead! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. Scroll down for contact details and/or links regarding this Podcast   Support this Podcast   Remy Blumenfeld began is professional life in front of the camera on US television as a reporter on arts and entertainment. However, his interests have always been in society’s edges, and in the early 90s, that meant giving a platform and a voice to the issues of race and gender. Leaving the US, he moved to the UK and started a production company with a co-founder, initially from his bedroom in a crime-ridden area of London. He had no previous experience of running a business, but that did not stop them. Remy and his co-founder established Brighter Pictures, producing the first Asian pop culture show for BBC2 and a black music show for British Channel 4, a programme that aired for nine years.  He is credited with over 30 original television series and is the TV format creator of ‘There’s Something About Miriam‘, ‘Gay, Straight or Taken?‘, ‘Wudja Cudja‘ and ‘Undercover Lovers‘.  Remy ran Brighter Pictures for 10 years, building a solid reputation in managing creative teams and making successful TV programmes. He sold the company to Endemol (creators of Big Brother) in 2001 and continued working in the company until 2004. Our conversation is not about his TV work, it is about his transition into supporting creative founders to find the edge and explore their passion. It is about helping the next generation of creatives reach goals and avoiding some of the deep failures and pitfalls that he experienced during his career. Some of those mistakes cost him millions.  “Success is about Balance having a life where energy time and resources are shared between the things that are important to us.”  Remy is a deep thinker, and this was a rich conversation that explores his journey and changing career. It has not been all roses and success; there were failures and low points. There was a near-death experience that led him to look at life again and consider what was important.  ” In my hospital bed with hours to live, they let me sleep with my dog, and I survived…” Remy Blumenfeld is a prolific write and commenter, with articles in Forbes, the Independent Newspaper, the New York Times and the Sunday Times.  He is considered one of the world’s leading business coaches and advisor for the creative industry, with clients in film, tv, advertising, publishing and the gaming sector. His latest project is called “Stand Out” it is a 9 module online programme, a course for creative founders. Remy saw the need for a programme to fill the missing gap that all creative founders experience, just as he did when he launched his first company. “People get into show business and they focus on the show, they hope the business will look after itself, but it is the business that makes it work.”  Remy’s journey has been a life-changing experience, and I am so delighted he took some time to share his story with me.     You can find details of his coaching and the Stand Out Programme at Vitality.Guru: https://www.vitality.guru/ His Social Links are: https://www.linkedin.com/in/remy-blumenfeld-9086b520/ https://www.instagram.com/remy_blumenfeld https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO7Qdo0tEHidFmUIdSwgNNQ   If you enjoy the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? It takes less than 60 seconds and makes such a difference in helping other guests and listeners to find it. Eric Shapiro shares my mental health issues. So that's fun. We both over-analyze every single we do, both never think we are doing enough, both are filled with guilt. Jewish and Italian, respectively. Must be a hometown thing. BUT, Eric is WRONG about himself, as he has had an incredibly diverse and robust career path, ranging from mounting several indie film productions, to working as a ghost writer, to writing 6 works of fiction and 1 of non-fiction, to being the father to 2 young boys, and, finally, running a SUCCESSFUL, INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER in the year 2020. You can check out all of Eric's writing here. His film work is here. You can check out the newspaper here. The Floating Voter
Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald a victim of “fake news” and was not given due process

Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has suggested she was a victim of “fake news” and was not given due process before she was forced to resign last year. Speaking about Garda whistleblower controversy which led to he downfall for the first-time, Ms Fitzgerald said her resignation was “inevitable” because of a “media and political frenzy”. “We talk a lot about fake news and other countries and fake news but the whole thing developed into such a frenzy,” she told Independent.ie's Floating Voter podcast. Ms Fitzgerald handed in her resignation to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar last November following a week of controversy surrounding her knowledge of an alleged Garda legal strategy to discredit whistleblower Maurice McCabe. Fianna Fáil threatened to support a motion of no confidence in the then Tánaiste if she did not resign. After days of political uncertainty, Ms Fitzgerald dramatically decided to resign hours before the Dáil motion was to be debated. She said she took decision because she believed a general election was not in “the interest of Fine Gael or in the interest of the country”. She accused Opposition politicians of looking for a “head on a plate” and said both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin did not afford her “due process” during the scandal which was subsequently investigated by Justice Peter Charleston's Disclosures Tribunal. “Obviously it was the most difficult period I've ever had in politics. And I think it was a very difficult situation and decision for Leo as well – politically and personally. It was a very big call by him and by me and for the party at that time,” she added. The former Justice Minister said the Taoiseach was “very loyal” to her throughout the scandal which saw Fianna Fáil publicly state they had no confidence in Ms Fitzgerald. “He (Mr Varadkar) was always into due process and Fine Gael was always into due process. Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail didn't on that occasion but there we go that's politics,” she said. “I will absolutely wait for the Charleton Report some time in October before I make any comment about that but the one thing I will say there was certainly due process down there and I think due process is always what I have wanted to see and it is the way I have treated other people and it is the way the Fine Gael party has always believe people should be treated,” she added. Ms Fitzgerald was taking part in a special live recording of the Floating Voter podcast where she discussed the recently published biography on the Fine Gael leader: ‘Leo Varadkar – A Very Modern Taoiseach'. Former Independent Newspaper political correspondent and current government adviser Niall O'Connor returned to the podcast to discuss the biography he co-author with Independent Newspaper deputy political editor Philip Ryan.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Kalpesh Lathigra was born and bred in London, England. He studied photojournalism at the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication), before being awarded what was then a much sought-after traineeship with the Independent Newspaper, which at that time was renowned for a commitment to using excellent photography in a way that many national newspapers in the UK never really had in the past. Kalpesh went on to have a successful freelance career as a newspaper and magazine photograper, shooting features and portraits for most of the major British broadsheets and their weekend magazines and in 2000 he won a first prize (Arts, Singles) in the World Press Awards. A few years later he was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Fellowship for his long-term project about the lives of widows in India: Brides of Krishna. He is still a busy, jobbing editorial photographer, but, alongside that role, he has also developed his own personal practice in which he has attempted to straddle the invisible divide between editorial, documentary photographer and a more authored, artistic sensibility - a state of affairs that we spend much of the interview mulling over. His first book, 'Lost In The Wilderness', which he funded with a Kickstarter campaign, will be published later this Autumn and is the result of 5 years work documenting the native American Lakota Sioux community of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, USA. (Check links below for updates.) In Episode 005 Kalpesh discusses: Use of the label 'artist'; book project - 'Lost In The Wilderness'; why working is good for the soul; a friendship with Ralph Fiennes; changing his approach to the story; the fight against cliche, the World Press controversy and he danger of cliques
