Today's guest is quite literally a national treasure. She's a Dame, a queen of the kitchen, an author, a restaurateur, and of course, the judge who has been serving up wit and wisdom alongside cakes and crumbles on The Great British Bake Off since 2017… it is the one and only Dame Prue Leith.Born and raised in South Africa, Prue moved to London in the swinging Sixties and quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the culinary world. She founded Leith's - a hugely successful restaurant in Notting Hill that went on to earn a Michelin star - and later opened Leiths School of Food and Wine, which has trained generations of top chefs and food writers.Over the decades, she's written best-selling cookbooks and novels, been a newspaper columnist, a judge on the Great British Menu, and has sat on countless boards and advisory panels, all while campaigning tirelessly for better food in schools, hospitals, and prisons. Her impact on British food culture is hard to overstate. And now, at 85, she's showing no signs of slowing down. She's back on our screens in the new season of her wonderfully warm and personal ITV series, Prue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen, filmed in her beautiful country home, where she shares family recipes, chats with friends, and brings a bit of sunshine to our screens. If you thought Prue's adventures were limited to the kitchen, though, you can think again. From the deserts of Turkmenistan and the ancient silk roads of Uzbekistan to beach drives in Western Australia and mountain drives in Bhutan, her travel diaries are as rich and surprising as her legendary glasses collection. So settle in for a deliciously inspiring chat with a woman whose life has been anything but ordinary.Destination Recap:Holly:Elkstones, Chipping Campden, England (Part of Simon Escapes' collection)Prue:TurkmenistanUzbekistanAshgabat, TurkmenistanKruger National Park, South AfricaUmhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaIpswich, EnglandParis, FranceCape Town, South AfricaPerth, Western AustraliaKalgoorlie, Western AustraliaLucky Bay, Western AustraliaCore by Clare Smyth, London, EnglandCotswolds, EnglandBhutanAmir Temur Mausoleum, Gur-e Amir Complex, UzbekistanSharm El Sheikh, EgyptThe Kimberley, AustraliaPrue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen continues on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player on Saturday 19th April 2025With thanks to Wexas, Airbnb and Saily for their support of today's episode - Download the SAILY app and use our code TRAVELDIARIES at checkout to get an exclusive 15% off your first purchase Thanks so much for listening today. My guest today is Ed GambleEd is a comedian, an actor, host of the Off Menu podcast amongst others, and judge on the Great British Menu. He can now also add author to his bio of credentials as his debut book Glutton has just been published. His career in comedy began at Durham university performing with the Durham revue before heading to the Edinburgh fringe for the first time in 2011 His stand-up comedy is largely observational comedy, often aimed at himself, including discussion of his diabetes, which he was diagnosed with as a teenager. He says his humour was honed by a fixation with all things sitcoms and stand up. Ed has been a regular panellist on the BBC panel show Mock the Week , has acted for shows on the BBC and hosted several radio shows. The Off Menu podcast which he hosts with James Acaster has been a phenomenal success which has seen him become somewhat of a household name. When asked what made him get into comedy, Ed replied, The perfect mix of a terrifying ego and an astonishing lack of self-esteem. I can't tell day to day whether I'm arrogant or I hate myself, but I think somewhere in-between is absolutely ideal for a comedian.Do hope you enjoy today's episode. Usually we ask what is on the menu, this week the question is what is ‘off' the menu! On one of the hottest days of the year, we adored having comedian, podcaster and all round mensch Ed Gamble round to mum's for lunch. Ed has mum's absolute dream job (being a judge on Great British Menu) and he shared all the secrets from the filming, including how he once had to eat 8 desserts in one sitting! He told us how his favourite part of a meal is always the starter, the wonderful story of how he proposed to his wife (involving Godzilla!), his love of a Turkish kebab and his stint as an Ice Cream man to promote his new book. Apparently Ed gets tattoos to celebrate all the big moments in his life, time for a Table Manners tattoo Ed?! Ed's new food memoir ‘Glutton' is out now. Hosted on Acast. When was the last time you tucked into cockle pie? Or stirred clams into a sumptuous pasta or stew? These bivalves are plentiful all around the UK coastline, tied up with the diets and fortunes of coastal communities for millennia. Many species can be efficiently farmed at minimal cost to the environment. Their nutritional value stacks up against mussels and oysters. And yet our desire for these 'uglier' shellfish is at risk of disappearing. In this programme we meet chefs, fishermen and food thinkers trying to change that. One of Wales's best chefs Nathan Davies put Welsh razor clams on his heat winning fish course on BBC Two's Great British Menu. Fisherman Tom Flatt who thinks there's a sustainable fishing future in hand dived shellfish. Cambridge scientist David Willer whose research could lead to environmentally sound shellfish farms that fight malnutrition across the world. Welsh food writer and thinker Carwyn Graves wants us to dwell on food traditions from the past in order to make our own in the future, and so we hear from people living in the Welsh village of Penclawdd, where cockles have been part of residents' lives for as far back as they can remember. The problem they all face is the same; How to convince the UK to see past their ugly exterior and put shellfish back on the table. Presented by Sheila Dillon. Produced in Bristol by Clare Salisbury.
