After over 140 people were killed at a concert venue in Moscow, Islamic State in Khorasan Province, or ISKP, an Afghanistan-based offshoot of ISIS, quickly claimed responsibility. Who are ISKP and what wider threat do they pose to the West and the U.S. in particular? On this episode of the Free Expression podcast, Afghan Armed Forces Lieutenant General Sami Sadat tells Gerry Baker why he thinks ISKP will strike again and soon - - perhaps even in the U.S. He also explains how the chaotic and hurried U.S. departure from Afghanistan in 2021 and the Doha Accord of 2020 helped set the conditions for the resurgence of the terrorist menace. According to Sadat, the Biden administration's plans to fight the enemy from "over the horizon" are doomed to fail. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today we're joined by Newsweek senior editor at large Josh Hammer to discuss Israel, Gaza, and the international response to the war. We start off with an explanation of why the October 7 attacks in Israel are such a big deal and why this conflict is different from other Middle East conflicts. We explain what pro-Palestinian protesters mean when they say popular mottos such as "resistance by all means" and "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." We also look at the rise in anti-Semitism across the world and in our back yard and look into the narrative that Israel is an evil actor in this conflict. But did the land belong to the Palestinians originally, and what does true liberation for Palestinians actually mean? We cover all this and more. --- Timecodes: (01:20) Why is Oct 7 such a big deal? Today we're talking to Josh Hammer, conservative commentator and opinion editor at Newsweek. Josh is here to break down a few of the stories that have taken over the news in the last few days, starting with the hostage situation that took place in a North Texas synagogue. Apparently, an armed Muslim extremist thought he could negotiate the release of a convicted terrorist by taking some innocent people hostage. Thankfully, no one lost their lives. However, since then, the media have been working overtime to hide any information about the case that runs counter to their narrative that says white supremacy is basically the only threat America is facing. Then, we discuss the heavy-handed speech Joe Biden gave in Georgia in support of the Democrats' "voting rights" bill. Josh explains how, despite the name, this bill would actually dilute the power of the average American's vote. Lastly, we talk about what the GOP should do and what issues it should focus on heading into the new year in order to capitalize on Democrats' failures and do right by their constituents. --- Timecodes: (0:00) Intro (9:30) Interview with Josh Hammer (10;00) Breaking down the Colleyville, TX synagogue hostage situation & the media/FBI's reaction to it (30:22) Voting legislation in the Senate - will it pass? The facts are that most terrorist attacks in the world are carried out by Muslims and most victims are Muslim. Why, then, are many in the Islamic world in denial about these facts? Borealis is joined by UK activist and Sufi Muslim Ahmed Patel to talk about these issues.Ahmed Patel, the brother-in-law of the London 7/7 bomber Mohammed Siddique, is an excellent example of a British Muslim who stood up against religious radicalization. From an outside observer's perspective, it would appear that people like Patel are authentic actors in the field of prevention work and should therefore be included to a greater extent in British (non-) governmental PVE approaches. Find out more about Ahmed.Phil Gurski is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd. and Programme Director for the Security, Economics and Technology (SET) hub at the University of Ottawa's Professional Development Institute (PDI). The rise and fall of ISIS in the Levant has been the most significant development with regard to Islamist terrorism in recent years. The terrorist group put Iraq and Syria to fire and sword and orchestrated several attacks in Europe and elsewhere. Despite serious setbacks suffered by ISIS, Islamist terrorism continues to thrive and remains one of today's most significant security threats in the West and the Middle East. In today's podcast, Lucinda Creighton is joined by Dr Emile Nakhleh, a former CIA Senior Intelligence Service Officer and a Research Professor at the University of New Mexico, to shed light on Islamist terrorism. Nakhleh is an expert on political Islam, radicalisation and terrorism in the Middle East and was a founding Director of the CIA Political Islam Strategic Analysis Program Office. After taking us through his rich career in the US government, Emile Nakhleh provided us with some insights on the origins and current state of Islamist terrorism, the challenges the Islamic world faces in relation to extremism, and the role of the United States in the Middle East.
What happened when we saw a wave of islamist terrorism in Europe during the 2010s? Why were there so many attacks and who was behind them? Could we see another wave of terrorism in Europe? What must be done to avoid it? In this episode, senior researcher, historian and political scientist Petter Nesser, follows up his talk from NorSec 2021 about jihadist terrorism in Europe. Hosting the episode is leader of YATA Oslo, Emil Klashaugen.
Remember ISIS? How about al Qaeda? It was not long ago (on the calendar, at least) that either name could summon, if not profound discomfort, at least a hint of the queasiness that swept over Theo Padnos as he sat in front of a TV in southwestern Syria the morning of Aug. 20, 2014. At the time, Padnos was a prisoner of al Qaeda, the terrorist group that commanded the attention of the entire world back when a radical religious ideology was considered the major threat to life as we know it.

Alexandre “Sacha” Trudeau, had taken a break from globetrotting to act as a senior adviser in his brother Justin’s campaign for leader of the Liberal Party. It was a move that seemed surprising coming from a man who, for years, insisted he was apolitical. 1. What is Sacha Trudeau's interest in liberal party policy and what personal initiatives does he hope to advance with his brother at home? 2. Why is the Trump administration increasingly concerned about Canada's foreign policy? 3. Who is Sacha Trudeau? Al-Quds (Arabic for Jerusalem) Day has been held on the last Friday of Ramadan in the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution. It was created as a counter to Jerusalem Day, held this year on May 24th, on which Israelis celebrate the reunification of the city after Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. Iran has sworn the destruction of the Jewish state, and backs militant groups with similar ideologies such as the Gaza Strip’s Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Flags and clothing bearing the insignia of both organizations were wore by many in the crowds. These Islamists are continuously staging anti-Jewish movements particularly problematic in Toronto, Canada and London, England. The Iranian government uses surrogate mosques, usually Pakistani, to funnel foreign money and pay protesters to attend these demonstrations to show perceived power and influence by the Iranian regime. These organized demonstrations are an increasing headache to western governments. I have read quite a few books on terrorism but always from an English language perspective. This has meant that I was missing the alternative stories from other nations. Guido Steinberg has done me a favour by publishing his German study in English. German Jihad: On the Internationalisation of Islamist Terrorism (Columbia UP, 2013)provides an excellent, detailed analysis of the recent history of the growth of Jihad inspired terrorism by German residents of both European and Asian heritage. He begins the book with one of the best explanations of the near enemy (apostate Islamic governments) and the far enemy (Western nations who are seen as supporting the near enemy), that I have read. He then explains the importance of the demographics of migration to Germany and its role in the Jihadist movement. Germany has a largely Turkish migrant population. As such they did not have the same influences or inspirations as Jihadists from an Arabic background. Importantly, they also did not have the same network of connections which allowed them to easily join international organisations such as Al Qaeda. These circumstances led to a particular series of connections and a lack of awareness by local law enforcement of the growing threat of terrorist activity. Guido gives us a professional and thorough analysis of this history and has sufficient detail to keep a research student engrossed for weeks. I highly recommend the book.

Eight years after September 11, the UK may be at greater risk than the US from Islamic extremists. Why are young British Muslims so ripe for radicalization? Did the US jeopardize British efforts to foil a plot that could have been more deadly than 9/11? Also, the media mistakes a Coast Guard training exercise for the real thing, and global warming and open seas.
