In this edition of Madison Book Beat, host Andrew Thomas speaks with Jameka Williams about her Brittingham Prize-winning debut poetry collection, American Sex Tape™ (2022, The University of Wisconsin Press).Brittingham Prize judge and poet Brian Teare describes American Sex Tape™ as a collection “[s]plit between a love of watching and the fear created by it.” “Williams demolishes misogynist, racist logic with weaponized line breaks and wrecking-ball wit. Looking directly “into the camera,” Williams writes “about taking back power” and “the thin line between pleasure and collusion.” “Complex and messy and necessary in all the ways sex is,” Teare concludes, “American Sex Tape™ is brilliant Black feminist truth.”Jameka Williams holds an MFA in poetry from Northwestern University. Her poetry has been published in Prelude Magazine, Muzzle Magazine, and Gulf Coast, among others. A Pushcart Prize nominee, she resides in Chicago, Illinois. You can follower her @meka_will_write on Twitter.
In American Sex Tape, Jameka Williams captures the reader's gaze and stares right back. In this stunning debut collection, Williams offers a deeply personal investigation into how Americans (herself included) have been duped, buying into classism, sexism, and racist beauty ideals, while sacrificing self-love and self-determination. With whip-fast profanity and fiery humor, she charts a tender, exalting, and vibrant path to freedom from mirrors, stages, and screens. Fiercely feminist, Black, American, and powerful, Williams speaks for a generation of obsessive social media influencers and consumers, revealing the complex ways in which we are actors and witnesses, and victims in our public and private performances. Though we may be permanent residents of this soulless cultural landscape, this stunning collection refuses to let it define us. ___________________________________ Speakers: Jameka Williams holds an MFA in poetry from Northwestern University. Peace family, my name is Jameka Grant and I aspire to inspire my community to live life on purpose with love. This purpose of mine was brought forth when I realized the trauma I endured as a child was blocking my vision and ability to co-create a life called bliss. The need to heal and the support of my community was essential to my growth process so, when i was approached by founder Jacqlyn Sagna to join Sister Cxrcle Collective I got out of the fetal position and journeyed down the rabbit hole to heal my inner child and work towards radiating my soul and owning my glow. Sister Cxrcle Collective is a Not-For-Profit organisation birth in Toronto, ON and through events, workshop, and discussion we aim to heal as a collective with love on the forefront. Uplifting the people with the right attitude is how I choose to live my life on purpose with love. The journey of becoming less of my trauma and more of my soul has gifted me a path that is up to me to intentionally create. I hope to expand this way of being and inspire more women through one on one soul coaching session that they too hold the power to heal, align, and hustle.
