In season 11, episode 10 of Beach Weekly, host Lei Madrigal discusses a tentative agreement for California State University employees, President Biden's visit to Israel and more. The California State University Employees Union reached a tentative agreement on Oct. 11 with the CSU Chancellor's Office to implement a “salary step” program for employees. Union members still have to vote to approve the agreement, but, if approved, it would bring a 5% general salary increase effective July 1, 2023 with full retroactive pay. Then, the agreement would bring another 5% raise on July 1, 2024 and an official transition to salary steps on Oct. 1, 2025. Since 1973, the Bob Murphy Access Center, or BMAC, has offered accommodations and support to students with disabilities. On Oct. 5, BMAC celebrated 30 years of service to Long Beach State with a sold-out ceremony. Five alumni, who were once students assisted by BMAC, were inducted into the center's Hall of Fame for excelling in creating inclusive environments in their lives outside of Long Beach State. Students needing accommodations can contact the Bob Murphy Access Center for resources and more information. Their office is located in room 110 of the Shakarian Student Success Center and their email address is bmac@csulb.edu. The 39th annual Long Beach marathon was last Sunday, Oct. 15, which brought in roughly 18,000 people to run the 26.2-mile marathon around the city. The event started at Shoreline Drive and began at 6 a.m. Ryley Fick, a 23-year-old who graduated from Long Beach State last spring, won the women's race with a time of 2:58:30. Jason Yang won the men's race with a time of 2:27:04. The California Commissioner of Labor's Office issued a fine of $4.8 million, the largest fine given to a hotel in state history, to the Hyatt Regency in Long Beach. The Labor's Office stated that the Hyatt Regency allegedly violated California's “Right to Recall” law as they did not offer jobs to workers who were laid off as a result of the pandemic. The U.S. government has reached a settlement with more than 5,000 migrant families who were separated at the southern border between 2017 and 2018 after the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy towards border crossing. According to the settlement, the government will be prohibited from reenacting a “zero-tolerance” policy for at least the next 8 years and it requires the government to continue to identify families who were separated. It also states that families will gain the ability to apply for work permits, and housing and medical services. A 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy was killed after being stabbed 26 times by his family's landlord on Oct. 14 in Illinois, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office. His mother was stabbed at least a dozen times and sustained major injuries. The mother and son were allegedly targeted by their landlord because they are Muslim. Their landlord was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of a hate crime and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. President Biden visited Israel last Wednesday to support the country in war and guarantee America's allyship. Biden's return to the Oval Office has been marked with an immediate request of almost $106 billion from Congress. Of the $106 billion, only $14 billion is proposed to support Israel. The remaining $82 billion is for replenishing U.S. weapons in Ukraine and anti-fentanyl trafficking task forces across the U.S.-Mexico border. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday Show 7th November. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. APPLE HIRES TESLA'S AUTOPILOT SOFTWARE DIRECTOR FOR CAR EFFORT - Apple Inc., bolstering its car-development efforts, hired a former engineer from Tesla Inc. who drew controversy this year for remarks about that company's Autopilot feature. - The iPhone maker tapped Christopher “CJ” Moore for its team working on a self-driving car, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Moore is working on the effort's software, reporting to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla executive who joined Apple at the end of last year. Bowers had led Tesla's Autopilot team before departing in mid-2019. - At Tesla, Moore implied that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk had overstated the capabilities of the Autopilot software. Earlier this year, California Department of Motor Vehicles officials interviewed Moore as part of investigations into the self-driving software. The department asked Moore about Musk claiming that Teslas would be capable of fully autonomous driving this year. - Moore signaled in response that Musk's statements didn't “match engineering reality,” according to a DMV memo summarizing the conversation. Many are speculating that these are the new factory wraps that the automaker has been talking about. - Recently, Tesla has been teasing new colors that are enabled by its paint shop at its Gigafactory in Berlin. However, the company has been talking about another way to get new colors on the vehicles too - Tesla announced that it would be offering wraps in China on its Weibo account. While the company made the announcement last year, there has been no confirmed example of wraps from them. - For the first time, Tesla has been spotted manufacturing new vehicles out of its Gigafactory in Shanghai, and the colors are all new. The images were captured by a drone used by reporter Jason Yang. - Some of the colors include turquoise, pink, and light blue. Original Source : https://www.techtimes.com/articles/267670/20211107/tesla-producing-vehicles-new-colors-shanghai-factory.htm TESLA'S LATEST PATCH HINTS AT CLOUD-SYNCED DRIVER PROFILES - Tesla is preparing for a world where your driver profile can follow you across different cars, be it your personal EV or a rental. The car maker has added a Cloud Profiles section in its latest software release, which points to an "Enable Vehicle Sync" option for backing up driver profiles - cloud profiles could also make it easier to synchronize settings across multiple vehicles. According to Tesla Software Updates, synced settings include your display brightness, Autopilot and navigation options. It'd also be helpful to have your Stopping Mode synchronized, as that seriously changes how Tesla's braking functions. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/tesla-driver-cloud-sync-update-211525117.html TESLA TO OPEN NEW BATTERY MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT FACTORY IN CANADA - Tesla confirmed that it is going to open a new factory to build battery manufacturing equipment in Canada. - The mayor wrote in the announcement about the new manufacturing facility: I'm delighted to share that Tesla Canada is joining our already robust automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the City of Markham. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the Gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries. - In 2019, Tesla acquired Ontario-based Hibar Systems, a manufacturing equipment company that makes machines used in battery cell production. Before Tesla took over, the company was based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, which is only a few minutes from Markham, where the new facility is going to be. It sounds like Tesla might be expanding the team into a bigger facility in the next town over in the suburbs of Toronto. The new three-week production halt will start Nov. 15. - GM said Friday that "battery module replacements remain the priority. We will continue to adjust Orion's production schedule moving forward to best support the recall." It boasts a top speed of 98 mph and a range of 68-89 miles, depending on riding style. The proprietary Z-Force 75-5 powerplant cranks out 46 hp and 78 lb-ft of torque. All of this is plenty to make the S a capable commuter and street bike, and the fuel savings should soften the $11,195 price tag. - Get Off The Road: Zero DS For about another $2500 you can add dual-sport drive and move up to the DS model. You'll get the same motor as the S, but the added grip (and added fun) two-wheel drive provides will cost you a few miles in range. - The Dual-Sport Monster: Zero DSR - For $15,695 you can bring home a Zero DSR and its Z-Force 75-7 motor, providing a whopping 70 hp and 102 mph top speed. The DSR also includes a mammoth 16.5 kWh battery (nearly twice the size of that in the S and DS), giving the the newest model a Tesla-like 163-mile range under mixed driving conditions. Original Source : https://artofgears.com/2021/11/05/zero-introduces-three-new-2022-models/ MERCEDES-BENZ EQS EPA RANGE AND EFFICIENCY RATINGS REVEALED - The upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS was recently listed on the EPA website, which confirms that the two first versions - EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC - will get a range of respectively 350 miles (563 km) and 340 miles (547 km), as announced in October. - The difference between the two cars is surprisingly small, which is interesting considering that the EQS 580 4MATIC has an additional front motor. In both cases, the usable battery capacity is 107.8 kWh (the total value is not disclosed by the manufacturer). - Overall, the efficiency is very good, but not as good as in the Lucid Air or Tesla Model S. At least that's what Charlie Min from Asian Petrolhead says after having a go in the range-topping GV60 AWD Performance Model that features a total of 360 kW (483 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque from a dual-motor powertrain connected to a 77.4 kWh battery—the only one available in the Genesis EV. - GV60's Boost Mode, which is only available for 10 seconds at a time. Even so, the Genesis doesn't match the Kia EV6 GT's 430 kW Original Source : https://insideevs.com/features/545850/genesis-gv60-first-drive-reviews/ LARRY DAVID'S CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK - Seinfeld co-creator Larry David loves driving eco-friendly cars on Curb Your Enthusiasm, the popular HBO comedy series that is now in its eleventh season. Unlike Seinfeld, Curb isn't a typical sitcom, but more of an improvisational cinema verité-like comedy that follows Larry in his life as a somewhat retired yet very successful writer and producer - Initially, he drove a Lexus GS 400, which he traded in for a first-generation Toyota Prius in season 2 of the show. Larry then drives newer versions of the popular Toyota-badged hybrid in following seasons, before making the switch to a BMW i3 for seasons 9 and 10. Now, with season 11 officially underway, it seems Larry has abandoned BMW in favor of rival Audi, as he can be seen driving the new e-tron Sportback crossover, which is of course fully electric. Show #816   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA CYBERTRUCK IS AT THE PETERSEN MUSEUM "Like most Tesla products pre-release, the Cybertruck is shrouded in an air of mystery. Nobody’s really seen it anywhere except for the reveal event. There have been some videos of Elon Musk driving it around, and a "Jay Leno’s Garage" episode aired, but the public hasn’t been allowed to get up close and personal with it yet. That’s changed this week, because the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles currently has it on display. " says Autoblog today: "If you happen to be located in the area, you can go and see the Cybertruck in person. Petersen is taking reservations for entry to the museum — there are no walk-ins for the time being. The Cybertruck itself won’t be hanging out for long, though. Petersen says the truck will only be in the museum through July 5. The stainless steel is striking and the truck is intimidating. It’s huge, and weird, and it still looks like it’s from outer space."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/23/tesla-cybertruck-petersen-museum-showing/#slide-2243823   TESLA GIGA SHANGHAI IS SEEING A MYSTERIOUS EXPANSON "The pace of Gigafactory Shanghai’s construction has reached a point where it is now normal to see massive buildings being built from the ground up in but a few months. Over the past few months, all eyes were focused on the site’s Phase 2A zone, which happens to be the upcoming Model Y factory. Recent flyovers of the Gigafactory Shanghai complex show that the construction activities in the area are now going far beyond the Model Y plant." according to Simon at Teslarati: "As could be seen in a recent video posted by Tesla enthusiast and drone operator Jason Yang, the Model Y factory in Gigafactory Shanghai is quickly coming to form. But another story is forming right beside Tesla’s expansive Model Y factory in China. What is interesting is that Tesla has so far been very quiet about the nature of these upcoming structures."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-shanghai-model-y-factory-mysterious-video/   PORSCHE TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO SPIED TESTING WITH SEDAN COUNTERPART "The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is official – at least we've seen several spy shots to prove that. Plus, Stuttgart has already confirmed the all-electric wagon's launch towards the end of this year. With that said, Porsche has all its hands on deck in developing the production version of the Mission E Cross Turismo." says Motor1.com: "Our spy photographers were able to spot the Taycan Cross Turismo more than two months ago testing in the snow. This time, however, recent spy shots show it testing with its sedan counterpart. Despite that, the Cross Turismo is, of course, highly based on the Taycan's architecture; it's the first among the Taycan-based derivatives – the pillar stone of Porsche's push for electrification. As such, expect the same powertrain options for the Taycan Cross Turismo, with power outputs ranging from 530 horsepower (395 kilowatts) to 761 hp (567 kW). The Taycan Cross Turismo will hit the global stage towards the end of this year."   https://www.motor1.com/news/429905/taycan-cross-turismo-spy-images/   INFINITI PLANS TO LAUNCH ONE PURE EV, ONE 'GAS-POWERED EV' TO BECOME SUSTAINABLE "Infiniti has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and it drop several models in order to be prevented from losing money. But at the same time, new models will be added to the range, even electrified ones and it seems that all will be performance-oriented." reports InsideEVs: "According to a report published on Automotive News, which interviewed Infiniti’s chairman, Peyman Kargar, who confirmed plans to introduce one pure EV, as well as a "gas-powered EV." While the former seems like a straightforward model, the latter has us a bit intrigued. It will apparently be a performance-oriented electric vehicle that will have a rather small battery pack (it will rely on the gasoline engine to run continually and produce power); it will also be branded 'e-Power,' suggesting it will be similar to other models sold by Nissan under the same moniker. However, it will be different from Nissan’s other e-Power models because it will be a performance-focused model. We don’t know exactly how quick this new model will be, but this information, along with the model’s name will be disclosed in a few months."   https://insideevs.com/news/429541/infiniti-ev-e-power-new-models-announced/   ELECTRIC VEHICLE CAR SALES WILL BOUNCE BACK RAPIDLY Google Trends data show that, since the PM’s launch of the COVID-19 recovery strategy (11 May), there has been a significant boom in demand across the automotive industry - so much so that the demand is now parallel with the numbers pre-lockdown, this surge in demand is especially evident in the electric vehicle industry.   The Road to Recovery Dashboard: Electric Vehicles is part of a tool built by LeaseFetcher, a car leasing comparison site based in Scotland. “The dashboard aims to observe long term and immediate changes in demand and will help inform predictions about the future for the electric vehicle and automotive industry,” says Will Craig, Founder of LeaseFetcher. Pulling its raw data from Google Trends on a weekly basis, the tool provides an invaluable insight into consumer sentiment and behaviour. In March, demand across the automotive industry nosedives. Now, following the announcement on the 11th of May, introducing step one of the recovery strategy, demand is once again on the rise. While search volume for ‘electric car’ hasn’t yet returned to its pre-COVID, record-breaking levels, there’s every indication that it will do soon. ‘Electric car’ has already surpassed 2019 levels.   TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC CARS COULD BOOST UK ECONOMY BY £24BN "NEW GOVERNMENT-BACKED research claims that a switch to electric vehicles could inject a much-needed £24bn into the nation’s economy over the next five years. The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), a collaboration between the government and the UK’s car making industry, concluded that the transition from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to electrified powertrains could create a wealth of opportunities for British companies, The Times reported." on driving.co.uk: "The APC broke down the £24bn of potential market growth into three sections: £12bn in batteries; £10bn in “power electronics”; and £2bn in “electric machines”. Power electronics refers to devices that control electricity in a car, while electric machines manage the conversion of electricity into mechanical energy."   https://www.driving.co.uk/news/business/transition-electric-cars-worth-24bn-says-report/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Richard S Wiggins Every time I tell people about my EV,  they always tell me, “Yes, I would love to own an EV but, they are just to expensive,”. So what do you do.   Rajeev Narayan In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. It's great fun to drive and reduce how much I spend on Gas. I was able to share this experience with a co-worker and gave her a ride in my car. She then bought a Chevy Bolt. Since then we have both bought plug-in hybrids, a Chevy Volt for me and a Prius Prime for her.  We both drive about 80 miles a day between hospitals, clinics and dialysis units, and save about $6,000 a year on gas. Earlier this year we both also invested in community solar as well. It has been a source of satisfaction for me to have positively influenced her journey into EVs and green power.   MARTIN YOUNG I was talking with a gentleman who is a strong advocate for increased oil drilling here in the U.S.  I asked why he felt so strongly about that, and he said it was because he wanted our country to have greater energy independence and not have to rely on oil from countries who "don''t like us." I told him that my car (a 2016 Chevy Volt) rarely uses gas and that most of the time it runs on electricity.  What I said next left him temporarily speechless.  I said, "Richard, the thing about electricity is that it's 100% American made.  We don't import it.  We make it here.  In fact, you can even make it yourself by putting some panels on your roof.  That is true energy independence."  After a pause, he simply said, "You're right."   KARL CRAMER Took my little nieces in my in my plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. When the battery ran out and it switched to gas they said, "Oh no! We're polluting! Show #713   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MODEL Y BEING  STOCKPILED AT FREMONT "Tesla has begun preparations for the first set of Model Y deliveries that are scheduled to take place as early as March 15. Car carriers loaded with Tesla’s all-electric crossover were spotted over the weekend alongside a stockpile of Model Y at the company’s factory lot in Fremont, California." reports Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla enthusiast Wilson Lam shared photos of a fleet of Model Y being loaded onto car carriers over the weekend, a signal that the electric carmaker is in the final stages of delivery preparation. While it’s unclear it the Model Y vehicles spotted in car haulers are display vehicles for showrooms or customer cars, the fleet of Tesla crossovers in Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat joins dozens of other Model Y sightings taking place in California."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-fremont-lot-car-carrier-hauler/   FIRST IMAGES OF THE TESLA MODEL Y INTERIOR IN THE WILD mrleetesla on Twitter -two USB-C in the rear on the rear vent cover.. 12v outlet in the trunk.   TESLA CHINA STARTS SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 2 TO BUILD MODEL Y "Tesla China has started construction on Phase 2 of Gigafactory 3 Shanghai. This will likely support Tesla Model Y production. This work started immediately after Phase 1.5 which was for the Battery and Powertrain workshop. In a video, Jason Yang calls it Phase 3." according to NextBigFuture.com.   https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/tesla-china-starts-shanghai-gigafactory-3-phase-2-to-build-model-y.html   BYD TO DELIVER 134 ELECTRIC BUSES TO LOS ANGELES LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) placed the largest order for electric buses in U.S. history  — 134 of them will come from BYD. The record-breaking order helps advance the core goals of Mayor Garcetti’s recently signed Executive Directive — “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   STREETSCOOTER: DEUTSCHE POST TO CEASE ELECTRIC VAN PRODUCTION "Deutsche Post/DHL announces they will cease the manufacturing of their StreetScooter electric vans before the end of this year. The Group’s CEO Frank Appel has given up on finding a buyer for its subsidiary, even though it looked as if a deal with China’s Chery was as good as made." writes electrive: "StreetScooter wants to concentrate on the operation of the current fleet alone, which comprises 11,000 electric vans and is to be expanded to 15,000. Less than six months ago, StreetScooter and Chinese EV manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent for a joint venture during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to China. Back then, in September, Chery and StreetScooter announced that they wanted to set up a joint venture in China.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/29/deutsche-post-to-cease-streetscooter-production/   IS THIS THE MERCEDES EQE? "This could be our first look at the E-Class' electric brother. Mercedes-Benz’s electrification push will continue with three new hybrids planned for a release later this year together with the fully-electric EQA crossover. A product presentation from December 2019 hinted we could also see the EV flagship of the brand - the EQS sedan, before the year’s end but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out there might be yet another electric sedan in the works and this video could be our first look at it." says Yahoo! today: "The clip shows two Mercedes prototypes and one of them is obviously the EQS. The other one, however, features a modified and shortened body, which hints we could be looking at the upcoming EQE EV. Think of it as the electric version of today’s E-Class, similar to what the EQS will be for the S-Class."   https://sports.yahoo.com/mercedes-eqe-082012634.html   CHARGEPOINT CEO EXPLAINS WHY HE ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y "When it came time for Pasquale Romano, the CEO of the electric-vehicle charging company ChargePoint, to choose his next EV, it was a close call between Tesla's Model Y SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV." writes Business Insider: "Ultimately, the Model Y won out due to its release date and Romano's experience with Tesla's Model S sedan, Romano told Business Insider. On paper, the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E are similar in many areas, though the Model Y has an edge in range, starting price, seating capacity, and cargo space. It remains to be seen which of the two electric-vehicles shoppers will prefer, though there have been signs from Tesla and Ford suggesting each could ending up ranking among the best-selling EVs. "   https://www.businessinsider.com/chargepoint-ceo-chose-tesla-model-y-ford-mustang-mach-e-2020-2?r=US&IR=T   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   MARTIN YOUNG My next door neighbor is a Porsche Certified Instructor who teaches new owners how to handle their cars at Porsche Track Experiences here in the Southeast.  After some minor cajoling, he finally agreed to take my Chevy Volt out for a spin. We had only been in the car for about 3 minutes when he began to smile and shake his head at how good the performance was.  As we drove up a steep and curvy mountain road, he was having so much fun he actually laughed out loud!  When we were climbing up a particularly steep section, he exclaimed, "It's actually accelerating going up this!"  As we came back down, he marveled at the regenerative braking.  Later, after we pulled back into my driveway, he put it in park and turned to me...he smiled and stuck out his hand.  As I shook it, he said, "Thank you.  I had no idea." So to my fellow EV owners, I say this:  You do not have to convince your friends and family that EVs are great.  All that you have to do is convince them to drive your car.  Once they are behind the wheel, the car will show them how great EVs really are!   LEANNE ROBERTS I think the only way to convince them is to get them in one, first as a passenger and then get them to drive one. The way we got into EVs was through driving my brothers Nissan Leaf. There are other options out there such as the EV Experience Days through Octopus which I think is a great idea to test drive one and get rid of any FUD. I do think that drivers days and dealership deals for weekend test drives would only help increase the uptake.   Robert Pryor  • 3 days ago I'm about ready to tell people not to buy an EV, if the reverse psychology doesn't work, at least I won't have to hear lame reasons why it's not for them.   Stephen Troyer  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV.   Step one, buy one for yourself. Step two, offer to give rides or let people test drive. (Just don't badger people about it.) Step three, live with the EV and answer any questions about what it's like, how it's holding up, what maintenance and charging is like I remember a news item from this show saying that the #1 influence on people buying EVs is their friends buying EVs.   D R-K  • 5 days ago If you can bear to let someone else get behind the wheel... let them borrow your car for four days, say Thursday to Sunday... make sure you have a tracker because getting it back will not be easy. Living with an EV, not just a quick test drive will do all the work .   Peter Zerfass  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV? Give them the key(card). Let them drive 30 seconds. Done.       GENEVA CAR SHOW CANCELED "Two of Switzerland’s largest trade fairs fell victim to the coronavirus epidemic, with organizers of the Geneva International Motor Show and the Baselworld watch fair pulling the plug on this year’s salons as the outbreak spreads in Europe." writes Bloomberg: "The car show, which was due to start Monday, was canceled as a force majeure after the Swiss government barred large gatherings, the organizers said in a statement Friday. German manufacturers Daimler AG and Audi AG said they supported the decision to cancel the show."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-28/geneva-car-show-canceled-in-swiss-bid-to-contain-virus-outbreak?sref=W369vOBR   EUROPE’S CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES LIVE ONLINE Despite the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show, the organizers have decided to broadcast the Car of the Year award ceremony via live streaming on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Seven candidates are part of the list of nominees for the Car of the Year 2020 including Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3.  Jury members will have to award 25 points, spread over at least five of the seven models. This will take place on Monday, 2 March 2020 at Palexpo. It will be broadcasted live on the Geneva International Motor Show website and on the #GimsSwiss Facebook page. This will enable you to discover the winner in real time.   For the US audience, 3pm in Geneva is 9am in New York   VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR'S SOFTWARE BUGS THREATEN SUMMER LAUNCH "Volkswagen is still struggling with "massive" software problems with its ID3 compact electric car, according to a German business magazine. The software glitches may force to abandon the EV's planned sales launch in summer, Manager Magazin reported." reports Automotive News Europe: "The problems stem from the basic architecture of the ID3's software, which was developed "too hastily," the magazine said, citing VW's own experts. Many of the system's elements do not understand each other, leading to dropouts and other difficulties, the report said. Hundreds of test drivers of the car are reporting up to 300 errors a day, the magazine said. More than 10,000 technicians are trying to solve the problems, which could delay the ID3's launch by up to a year, the report said. A VW spokesman told Automotive News Europe that the timeline for the ID3 has not changed and the car will be launched this summer."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-id3-software-problems-threaten-summer-launch-report-says   CHINA'S CATL AIMS TO RAISE $2.85 BILLION FOR EV BATTERY PROJECTS "CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital." writes Autoblog: "The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday. The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW. In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/28/catl-electric-car-battery-maker-funding/   GILLETTE STADIUM SCORES A TOUCHDOWN WITH 50 NEW ENEL X EV CHARGERS "Gillette Stadium is diving into the wonderful world of EV charging with the installation of 50 new JuiceBox Pro 32 amp units mounted on 25 JuicePedestals." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "The new stations will provide EV charging services to patrons of the stadium as they arrive to watch the New England Patriots or the New England Revolution."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/gillette-stadium-scores-a-touchdown-with-50-new-enel-x-ev-chargers/   TESLA’S MASSIVE 1GWH MEGAPACK BATTERY PROJECT WITH PG&E IS APPROVED "Tesla’s massive project to deploy 1GWh of Megapacks to create a giant energy storage system in California with PG&E has received approval from the local authorities." says Electrek: "It involves four separate energy storage projects and two of them should become the world’s largest battery systems. the Tesla project will be a 182.5MW / 730MWh, which could eventually go up to 1.1GWh. Tesla is listing the project as having a total capacity of 1,200MWh, which would mean that each Megapack has a capacity of 2,673kWh. The total capacity of those 449 Megapacks represents more energy capacity than Tesla Energy deployed throughout its first 3 years of operation – all Powerpacks and Powerwalls combined."   In the comments: "This will replace 3 existing gas plants and can be built in less than a year. This is the very definition of efficiency and efficiency eventually always wins." Notice that the 1,200 MW-hr energy rating is 4x the 300 MW power rating; that is, the packs can supply the peak power rating for about 4 hours. That's a big portion of the evening power peak when most people get home from work and turn on lots of appliances and home heating/cooling. Peak power can be 10x the cost of regular power and is usually supplied by natural gas fired steam turbines. This is a smart move by PG&E to reduce the total cost of electricity to their customers. While it's only a first step given the magnitude of the power consumption on the grid, it is an indicator of where technology is taking us in grid modernization.   https://electrek.co/2020/02/27/tesla-1gwh-megapack-battery-project-pge-approved/   A SNAPSHOT OF EU NEW PASSENGER CAR MARKETS IN JANUARY Starting this year, manufacturers in the European Union (EU) must comply with the next phase of mandatory CO2 standards for new vehicle fleets. An average fleet-wide target of 95 grams per kilometer (g/km) applies to 95% of the new passenger cars in 2020, and will apply to the whole new car fleet from 2021." says the ICCT.org: "In France, for example, the average CO2 level of new cars dropped from 113 g/km in December to 96 g/km in January—a 15% improvement within only a month's time.   In 2020, every low-emission vehicle registered counts twice towards manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions. Norway has implemented a strong vehicle tax based on CO2 and NOx emissions and vehicle weight.  In Germany, electric vehicles gained in popularity, increasing from a level of 4% in December 2019 to 6.5% in January 2020. . It seems as if manufacturers are increasingly revealing their hands, not only showcasing new electric models but also marketing them in large quantities."   https://theicct.org/blog/staff/snapshot-eu-new-pv-markets-jan2020   MERCEDES TEASES THREE NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS "Mercedes is gearing up to introduce three new plug-in hybrid models this month starting with an announcement on their corporate Facebook page. According to the video, Mercedes plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the GLA SUV, CLA Sedan, and finally the CLA Shooting Brake. Is the market ready for an electrified line-up of budget-friendly Mercedes products? " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once."   https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.
