The Toyota Prius might not have been a style icon when it launched in 1997, but it did quickly become a symbol of fuel savings. The fuel-sipper entered its fifth generation with the 2023 model year and ushered in a new era for ‘Yota's hybrid. This new Prius sports a wholly redesigned shell but sticks with traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. This Prius Prime tester features a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle I4 that works with an eCVT to make a combined 220 hp. This Prius PHEV also packs 13.6 kWh, which Toyota says can move the Prius Prime over 40 miles on with only its electric motors. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Toyota Prius and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '24 Prius and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the '24 Prius Prime. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the Toyota Prius, the latest Prius's curb appeal, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes this Prius special.
Welcome to Episode 35! This week, we're kicking things off by welcoming our newest contributor to the team! Everyone, meet Paolo Manalo: he's always well-dressed, he owns the mintiest E39 530i M-Sport, and this week, he shares his thoughts on the freshly redesigned Santa Fe Hybrid. Plus, we're revisting two familiar cars this week: the still-shockingly-good Prius Prime, and the still-delicous IS 500. Except this time, we can't help but wonder if we were looking back at the IS 500 with rose-tinted glasses. Indeed a conundrum. Here's what we discussed this week: Paolo's own toy, a manual-swapped 2003 BMW 530i M-Sport The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid The 2024 Toyota Prius Prime The 2024 Lexus IS 500 Enjoy the show? We're going to make the most of this bonus leap-year day as we talk about something that impacts the car shopping process most. We also cover the undisputed most efficient vehicle, as well as the potentially undisputed fastest EV.You may very well be surprised to hear that the most efficient vehicle you can drive still has an ICE engine in it. New EVs still can't beat the efficiency of a plug-in hybrid like the Toyota Prius Prime. The Toyota Prius Prime is outperforming the latest fully-electric vehicles in the U.S., holding onto its title as the greenest car.Despite the rise in EVs, none have surpassed the efficiency of the Prius Prime, thanks to its smaller size and lighter weight. The GreenerCars report of 2024 finds the Prius Prime leading with a green score of 71 out of 100, assessing emissions from manufacture to road use. For reference, the EV Hummer scored a 26. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 had the lowest score at 20. While the middle of the list included the Toyota Sienna Hybrid (55) and the Lexus ES 300h (59)A recent survey reveals that the dealership experience significantly influences car buyers, boosting their confidence in their purchase decisions and impacting their vehicle choice.ChangeUp's survey found that 84% of car buyers felt their dealership visit influenced their buying decision, with 90% gaining confidence in their choice from the experience. Most surprisingly, Millennials and Gen Z shoppers, in particular, value the dealership visit highly, with a significant percentage unsure of their vehicle choice until visiting in person."The dealership is so much more than just a transactional space," says Lee Carpenter of ChangeUp, emphasizing the opportunity to design a meaningful retail experience.Wendy's is stirring the pot with its announcement of dynamic menu pricing, a strategy that could change how we pay for fast food, but recent clarifications issued after significant blow-back suggest a more nuanced approach than initially perceived.Wendy's was to test dynamic pricing, potentially adjusting the cost of items like the Dave's Single based on demand, with a $20 million investment in digital menu boards to facilitate real-time changes. But then an onslaught of critics and consumers expressed concerns over the fairness and reception of fluctuating prices, drawing parallels to failed experiments like Coca-Cola's temperature-based pricing and the potential for perceived price gougingFollowing backlash, Wendy's quickly clarified that "surge pricing" during peak hours is not on the table, reassuring customers that the goal is to offer discounts and value during slower times, not to raise prices during high demand.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Are unpopular and sorta strange cars really actually good? That's the question this week's episode is pursuing as our hosts drive some weird and wonderful cars that have had a bad reputation in the past. First up Benjamin drives the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime, aka "the sexy Prius." With 44 miles of all electric range, the Prius Prime is no longer the geeky favourite of Leonardo DiCaprio, but a surprisingly good looking, functional car that isn't too bad to drive, or so Benjamin says. Listen the whole segment to get his final say, not to mention a fun tangent about other phevs that disappeared over the years. Then Sami brings up the 2024 Kia Carnival, which played dad van duties when his extended family dropped in. With tons of tech, space and cool powered second row seats, the Carnival should be a hit with families, but Sami says the Korean minivan has a fatal flaw which may make it fall out of favor with those looking for a three row superstar. On the other hand, Benjamin's recent moving experience with the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica PHEV suggests that you don't need a family to thoroughly test a van, especially one as efficient as this particular hybrid. Thanks for listening! See you all next week!

For some owners, a plug-in hybrid is the best of all worlds. There's electric range to cover the commutes, switch to gasoline for easy long road trips. The 3rd generation Prius Prime (based on the 5th gen Prius Hybrid) is a significant upgrade. At up to 44 miles of EV driving, it has significantly more gas-free range, it's noticeably quicker and is a swan to the outgoing ugly duckling. Tom Voelk travels to a Toyota event in Carlsbad, California to check out a well-equipped XSE Premium in Guardian Gray that should MSRP for around $43,000 when the Prime becomes available in May. And he's joined by John Voelcker with Green Car Reports and a contributing editor to Car and Driver. Tom attended a Toyota event to preview the Prius Prime. His opinions remain his own. Prius Prime is not eligible for federal tax credits. Check with your state.

Two hundred billion dollars of oil and gas money to through The World Cup in Qatar. Turns out Qatar is 'new money' and yet has a huge sovereign fund of $300B. Even they know the transition is coming. The governor of Tokyo suggests turtleneck sweaters for saving on energy. Will the trend take off? Donate to The Clean Energy Show via PayPal! COP27 was a big, fat compromise and we need to do better but it does seem the world is slowly coming together to oppose fossil fuels. The sexy new Prius is fast and sporty. Too bad it isn't an electric vehicle. We predict continued bad sales for Toyota. Biden pours billions into aiding the U.S. power grid to transition to renewable energy. Canada begins a program to replace oil furnaces on the East coast with heat pumps. Other topics: GoComics, Carlos Ghosn, Unilever to make precision fermented ice cream could be the blow to dairy we've been predicting, Mazda might be the only Japanese auto company to get serious about EVs and Volkswagen may be dropping the ball. A listener bought his first EV and is worried his reduced winter range won't come back. Don't worry, it will! Thanks for listening to our show! Follow us on TikTok! @cleanenergypod Transcript------------ Hello, and welcome to episode 140 of the Clean Energy Show. I'm Brian Stockton. I'm James Whittingham. This week, with the World Cup underway in Qatar, we look at what might be the peak of petrol state decadence. I mean, what does $200 billion even get? Dennis a soccer tournament without beer. Hell, even my kids pee wee soccer tournaments had beer. The governor of Tokyo has solved the energy crisis. The solution? Turtleneck sweaters. Speaking as a Canadian, wait until they hear about Tukes and woolly socks. Well, the Cop 27 climate summit was a bit of a wash. You know, like standing in the middle of Miami. Domino's Pizza is moving to Chevy Bolt electric delivery vehicles. They've ordered 800 bolts from GM, and if they don't receive the cars in 30 minutes, they're free. All that and more of this edition of the Clean Energy Show. Holy brian we're back with another show, another week. We're nonstop robotic machines here. Yeah, a lot is going on. And also this week, will I fit into the surprisingly sexy new Prius? The answer will sadden you, I think. Biden gives billions to the US power grid, and Canada follows the US. And installing heat pumps in regions where oil furnaces are popular. And I still can't figure out why oil furnaces are popular. They just didn't want to run the they just became popular, I think. Rural areas where it's hard to get them on the grid, I guess. And how are you this week? I'm going to tell you right now that I'm not well. I've been sick. You sound terrible, James. No, I'm not possessed. That is, my lungs. I've had illness. I flu since last we met. Brian pretty much okay, but it's not going well. Here's what I did. I tested my family because they're all sick. They gave it to me. My daughter brought it home from high school, and I knew I was going to get sick, so I just tested they tested. My wife and my daughter tested, and they're negative. So I thought I'm like I was singing at my nose. It's not like I have something different. I don't go anywhere, as you know. Anyway, I've had a hellish number of days, so I am barely able to be here today. And by the end of the show, I will be soaked in sweat. Oh, dear. Because I'm still doing anything is like a chore. I skipped lunch yesterday because I couldn't go downstairs. Oh, no. That maybe answers my question, because the pet peeve of mine. People often say they have the flu when what they really mean is that they have a cold. So you said you have a flu. Do you really believe it's, the damage, or is it a bad cold? I was going to jokingly bring the CDC chart on this to the show, and I thought, no, I'm not going to. But now I wish I did. Yeah, well, people say that all the time. Oh, I had the flu. And no, you just had a bad cold. If you've got the flu, it typically means you cannot go to work or go downstairs for lunch. Yeah, well, there's overlaps, okay? But having fever and severe aches is very uncommon for colds. You can have a mild fever. You can have a brief fever. But to have a long fever and severe aches, which I did, even with pills, I've been thrown down pills left and right until yesterday when I decided I've had enough. But I took one for the show, so maybe it'll kick in halfway through. We'll see. Anyway, I had to do some harrowing things, like go drive my family home from the gray cop, the super bowl of Canada, because they were volunteering there, because my daughter is going on a school trip, and that was one way to fundraise. Well, it killed my wife. She was a little bit sick still, and she had to work 10 hours one day serving rich people, which is always fun. Then my daughter asks, dad, is it legal to quit high school and go get a job? And I said, look, young lady, you want to be the people getting served, not the servers, okay? You want to stay in school. You want to be those rich bastards getting horse Durham served to them by people like you raising money for school trips. You don't want to be the person who's 30 years old, has six kids, and is trying to serve. I mean, we need those people. Those people will exist school and becomes an entrepreneur and starts a million dollar web company. Well, sure. I think she's more likely to start a bakery or something. Yeah. Not a huge amount of money in that. No, but people do do that. There's a lot of people who do that. In fact, there's a number of successful local businesses which are at least popular with people who rave about their goods. Yeah, there's some great bakeries. Finally, there's great bakeries here. There never used to be. It was always ironic because we're surrounded by fields of wheat. There's just nothing but wheat around here. But 20 years ago, you could not get a decent loaf of bread in the city. It was crazy. But now there's some really great places. Okay, so breaking news. I think we're probably the first podcast to deal with this important topic. There is an important website on the internet that has been down for four days now. It's not Twitter. It's not Twitter. It's more important than twitter. It's GoComics.com. GoComics.com. Yes. This is a website I go to every single day to get my daily comic strips. You know, I was always a newspaper guy, and one of the reasons I like newspapers was reading the daily comics. Now, many years ago, I switched to reading the comics online because you can get whatever comics you want. You don't have to just settle for the ones that are in your newspaper. So I go to this website every single day, GoComics.com to read a handful of comic strips, and it's been down for four days. When was the last time you had a website you visited and it was down for four days? People don't have patience for that anymore. No, 4 hours would be pushing the limits for most people. Four days. And you can get a lot of the comic strips in other places, but there's a handful that are only on GoComics.com. It drives me crazy. I've been looking into it, and cyber security apparently is the issue. And there's not a huge amount of information on the web, which is why we're an important news source now for this story. But getting the word out there. Yeah. Anyway, it's driving me crazy. Go to homes.com. Do you want to explain what a comic strip is to people under 45? Briefly, a few panels in a newspaper, usually with a punchline. The one I'm really missing is Nancy and Nancy classics. And this was a comic strip I didn't know about really much in my youth, but Nancy by Ernie Buschmiller, which ran like in the they do reprints of this on Go comics as well as the new strip, which is quite good. So I don't know. I'm having withdrawals. Another problem I have is I don't have enough fluids to get through the show. Okay. I was about to start the show and I have this giant water bottle from Costco that I've got. Electric pump on the top with a lithium battery. And it shows now to quit. What? It's got a pump on it? No, I bought the pump on Amazon. You could basically use these things in water coolers, although they're not quite water cooler size bottles. They're a little below that, but they're still as much as a human can carry and maybe beyond. I had my son happened to be home for Thanksgiving, canadian Thanksgiving in the head. So we decided we're only going to buy it when our kid is home from college to lift it upstairs because it's crazy heavy. Like one of those giant water bottles with a pump on it. Yeah, I put the pump on it. You can buy these pumps on Amazon for like $18. And mine just went dead right when I needed it most. Before that, I was going to help a water bottle before the show. And now I'm like, I'm going to have to be careful, very careful. Any coffee fits and I'm done. The show's going to come to an abrupt end. Well, if you have to pause, let me know. I certainly can't go downstairs for water. I'm not, you know, that strong. No. Well, at least I mean, it sounds like you're in better shape than you were yesterday. What have you been watching on TV? Well, I've been sick. Yes. Well, it's time for Brian's movie corner. Brian's movie corner. You mentioned this last week. There's a documentary on Netflix called Fugitive the Curious Case of Carlos Gon. And have you watched it yet? No, I skimmed it a bit because I was trying to see if they talked about the leaf in his history. Okay. Sadly, there's no real information about electric cars, but it was a nice refresher in who Carlos Gon is. I'd kind of forgotten what a superstar he was in the automotive world. He was originally the CEO of Renault, like 20 years ago or something. Turned around, renew. And then he became the CEO of Nissan at the same time. Turned around Nissan? They were heading into bankruptcy as well, that he made both companies very profitable. And then he got arrested for allegedly embezzling funds from Nissan and then very famously, escaped the country in a giant case on a private jet. He literally snuck out of the country after he was released on bail. So. Yeah, it's a pretty good dock. It was interesting. Yeah. Unfortunately, there was really nothing about electric cars. He was one of the proponents of the original Nissan Leaf. So maybe they're lagging in electric cars because he's no longer there. I'm not sure. You know, in the documentary. Well, first of all, there was a documentary. Who killed the electric car? This is about the EV One program. The first attempted car company making EVs. Yes. General Motors EV. One like 99 2000 in that area. Then they destroyed them all. They didn't let anyone buy them. Legendary. And that was a good documentary. And then there was the revenge electric car, which came at the point where Tesla was getting launched and starting to get the S off the ground. Their first mass produced car, I believe. And there was Carlos talking to Elon at the auto show and they were kind of awkward. It was very cool encounter because it was awkward to Egomaniacs who didn't want to give anything away. Carlos had said at that time that we're doing this just to hedge our bets. If Latter Eagles take off, we'll be prepared. But he didn't really get behind them. He didn't make them compelling enough. He basically looked at the car for the first time without approving it. He just looked at it at the auto show. Oh. This is what it looks like. Okay. And it was not a great looking car. It was divisive. I don't hate it. There's a lot of you know, it's iconic in a way because it's designed with big buggy headlights to deflect the wind so that you don't hear them on the mirrors because you would in an electric car because they're so quiet. And then who else was there with Chevrolet? There was what's his name? With GM. The cigar smoking what's his name? I can't remember. Bob Lutz, the legendary Bob Lutz, who always said that EVs would fail and the Tesla would fail. But then he was the guy sort of behind the Volt, which was coming out. So there were three things. There was a trifecta, this is history now. This used to be just my daily life, but it was the Volt with a V, which was a plugin hybrid. Essentially. It was an EV with a backup engine. And then there was Tesla getting off the ground. This was all happening in 2010, and this is when this documentary was made. And the first model years were eleven. By the way, there is a Cadillac ELR, I think it's called, for sale in Vagina, which was based on the Volt platform. They only made a couple thousand of these things, so they're kind of rare. But it's a really good kind of plug in hybrid Cadillac with all the luxurious Cadillac. What's it going for? I'm not sure. It was still kind of incoming. I saw a little thing on the web. But anyway, so Carlos Gon, a controversial figure, and there's no particular conclusion in the documentary because he managed to escape Japan and go to Lebanon, where he is originally from. And he has, I guess, not been extradited or anything, so he's never gone on trial. So no one really knows what the full story is. But there was another executive at Nissan that was sentenced to, for helping to COVID up his salary. They were trying to keep his salary quiet because it was quite high. So somebody at Nissan did do time for that. And then the pilot, like the guy who was like a US special forces guy who got him out of the country, he ended up doing a couple of years of time. I hope it was worth it, buddy. Yeah, I hope it was worth it. I don't know. I mean, I assume he was well paid. Carlos has got a lot of money. When you're that rich, you're going to throw it to millions really quickly. Just take them, just get into freedom. Quite clear on why he ended up back in Japan and in jail when Carlos Gonz has managed to not go back. Well, I think the pilot, he probably had a business there. He probably had a relationship with Japan if he was able to. I mean he could be, but he was an American. But they didn't really explain that. But yeah, so they made the point a couple of times that in Japan the conviction rate is 99%. Wow. If you are arrested in Japan, there is a 99% chance that you will be convicted. So the documentary sort of implies that there's something kind of hinky with the Japanese justice system. Well, that's why you flee. You don't wait for your trial and that's why you flee. Basically the charge is the yes. Like as soon as you're arrested, it's game over. And Carlos Gon, in an interview after he got out, he barely did 150 days in solitary confinement when they first arrested him, what he says were inhumane conditions. No butler. It's inhumane. No butler. But, like, his hands were cuffed in solitary confinement for, like, 150 days. Yeah, I probably would have done the same thing. Guilty or not guilty? Yes. He felt like he wasn't going to get a fair trial and very luckily managed to escape. So he was in a case that they said was an instrument case. They pretended that they were musicians and it was a big square case, but they said it was some type of an instrument and it couldn't go through the scanner because it was sensitively tuned, like it had just been tuned or something. And you can't put it through the scanner. I can just picture them putting it through the scanner and seeing the Carlos Scone in there, all curled up. All curled up. So? Yeah. I don't know. It's only about 90 minutes. It's an interesting little dog. Well, he is guilty, Brian. I've looked at the evidence and it seemed pretty over. Pretty compelling case. I don't know what the punishment would have been for him, but why was he in solitary confinement? I don't understand that if he was, but also, why would he need to embezzle money? Like, his salary was nine, he was making €9 million a year. Why would he need to embezzle money? I don't know. Maybe a gambling dance. Maybe he was paying for the Leaf program. I don't know. Who does? I don't know. Well, let's get out of the show. Cop 27, wrapped up in Egypt, and that's been a mixed bag of stuff for them. I'm not going to talk about it too much, but what did you think about how that went? Well, it's how these things usually go is that there's lots of optimism and then it's ultimately a compromise. There's always a compromise at the end of it, because this is a UN climate summit with hundreds of countries and getting everybody to agree. I don't know, sounds like it was not the best, but also not the worst. I see this as a very crucial time because there's a lot of fossil fuel bad things going on. They're trying to claw at what they can to make as much money as they can, and they would be happy to throw the climate down and our targets with it. So Bloomberg had a story on it. They said the United Nations climate summit just barely avoided ending in a deadlock. They went into extra a day or so afterwards. And the final compromise left big doubts over the prospect for new efforts to curb emissions. I quote, despite attempts by big powers like the United States, India and the European Union, the agreement failed to raise ambitions on reducing emissions. That could mean the world misses the one five degree Celsius warming target that enshrined the 2015 Paris agreement calls to phase out all fossil fuels, not just coal. Which is all they could come up with. They couldn't touch fossil fuels and to peak global emissions by 2025, which is likely to happen anyway according to the IEA. We're shot down by many nations who export oil, and I'm proud to say we have a bad record, Canada on this, but we didn't oppose it. Even though we are a big oil exporter. I'm sure it had a different government been in power. That would have been the case, probably. So while the phase down of all fossil fuels didn't make it to the final text, momentum grew around the idea that wasn't even in the cars before the summit. As many as 80 countries now support it. So we're moving towards banning fossil fuels, basically. We're getting closer to that. There was like a damage fund as well, right? That was a big part. I agreed to put in money to a fund for the countries most affected by climate change. Yeah. And that's all I'll talk about on that. But we'll update some more stories as we go. Here what's happening with $250,000,000 in Canada, right? Yeah. So I think we mentioned this before. There's a few more details. So there is a Greener Homes grant here in Canada that I've applied for, and they have now expanded the program with another component to it, which is to switch people from heating oil to a heat pump. So there's an extra $250,000,000 now in Canada. It's a separate stream in the Greener Homes grant, and it won't technically be available until early 2023. But this is mostly for people in Atlantic Canada, where heating oil is apparently a fairly common thing, rural properties, and everybody gets heating oil delivered. It's not a thing around here at all. We don't have this here. No, even though we have lots of rural properties. We have natural gas. We have the government who did that. Right. We have a government utility. That's kind of why we have government utilities here. But if you're in a rural property, I think it's mostly propane here. You can get your propane tank filled up. But anyway, this is up to $5,000. It's only for middle and lower income Canadians. And the twist on this, too, is you can get the money upfront, usually with this program. Wow. You apply and you spend all the money and then you get a reimbursement. But just because it's meant for middle income and lower income Canadians, you can actually get the money up to $5,000 upfront to switch you. And the potential is to save, like, according to them, as much as $4,700 a year on your heating costs. So what would a heat pump cost? Have you done any looking into it for your own house? As much as like 2025 grand. But I think for a heat pump, it depends. We need, of course, these super frigid cold heat pumps. I think in Atlantic Canada it's not as cold, and hopefully it wouldn't cost as much, maybe 10,000 or $15,000. But yeah, you get the money up front. And I checked in on the this is sort of similar and in line with what's happening in America with the biden. What's that called? The IRA. The Era. The IRA. The inflation Reduction act that starts on January 1, 2023. If you want to get a rebate on your heat pump in the US. It's anything installed after January 1 so you can get after the factory bait for yourself. Not going from an oil furnace. Right? Yeah, I'm going to go through the normal program, and I think I'll get up to 5000 as well for myself. It's too bad, though, because that would be hard for somebody low middle to finance ten grand if they weren't pressing. Yeah, and I guess that's why this program is that way. In Atlantic Canada, rural properties are probably fairly inexpensive, so you can have lower income people that own houses and they're going to be in trouble. But yeah, you can get the money upfront, which is very cool. And yeah, very much in line with what's happening in the US with the Inflation Reduction Act. So I encourage everybody to check your local jurisdiction, your local state, your local province to see what rebates are available. And things are really going to get rolling in 2023. So basically, they're starting with the biggest bang for the buck is so the biggest savings would be for people with oil furnaces, so they would be most compelled to make that switch. Right. And heating oil is one of the things that's really gone up in price with the recent inflation that we've been having. I was doing some research on this this morning, and I said that heating oil heats up twice as fast as you get more bang for your BTU, basically that it really heats up fast anyway, but probably causes more pollution than natural gas. Yes, natural gas is relatively clean as far as fossil fuels go, although there's a lot of methane in there. The new priest finally was announced on Wednesday in Tokyo and in the La auto Show, and there's been lots of speculation about it, so I've been kind of curious. Ultimately, though, there are actually Prius fans out there who are saying, wow, it's great, look at this. And what do you think? I've got a picture of it up. Well, I love the styling. Like the design road that Toyota has been going down the last few years, I just do not like. And they reached a kind of an apex with that excessively angular design of the Prius. So I think they had kind of no choice but to go in the opposite direction. But it almost looks to me like they designed it to be an EV. Like, EVs are often designed for aerodynamics. That's right. That's right. Yeah, they did. They cut down the roof line for that very reason, because there was no other way to gain efficiency. So it's just a huge shame it's not a full EV, because it looks like it could be. It looks a lot like the original Hyundai Ionic, which was a very aerodynamic shape. So I love the direction they're going. This is a huge improvement in terms of the style, I think, of the Prius. But just a shame it's not fully electric. It just feels like that would have been the correct move on it. Yeah. Obviously, you refresh the models every few years and it's totally time for a full EV refresh. And that's not what this is. Now, some people make the argument that at the moment in time that we're in right now, that a plug in hybrid, which there's a version of that right? There's a plug in version of the Prius. Some people think they all plug in. They don't. They're basically just a hybrid power train, which utilizes an electric motor to be more efficient. But it's all gas during the energy. So the plug in version has gone up in range from pretty significantly. Basically, the energy density of the batteries have gone up. It's taking up the same space to go from, I think it was, 40 range, which is a lot more usable. And in Canada, we would get the full $5,000 off. So that means you've heard it here first, because no one else has said this. The plugin. Prius prime PSE e v will be cheaper than the normal prius So why would anyone buy a Prius rebate? This is the situation that was like that in California when the Prius Prime first, there was no point. I mean, even if you don't care about plugging it in, why would you buy it? Because you have to resell it. You have to have a residual value. You might as well have the one that costs more. So it makes no sense for them to sell anything but the Prius Prime in Canada, and they also went with more horsepower, which I thought was a bit weird. Yeah, they really bumped up the horsepower. Finally, after 20 years of being mocked by truckers, by bumper stickers on truckers. Yeah. So it's quite a lot faster now. But of course, that cuts into the miles per gallon a little bit, but not too bad. Yes. Overall, though, I think it could be more efficient than it is. But the zero to 60 is a lot faster. Way faster. Yeah, that's fun. But here's my big problem with it, and that is that it sits lower. And then my wife has a Prius if you're new to the show. And that's her work car that she has to have inspected constantly because it's used for work. She takes social work clients around in it. They're not going to even talk about pricing or announcing it until sometime in the first half of next year as far as the prime is concerned. So that doesn't do me I need a car now. Brian should go buy that. Buy that Caddy. Yeah, you should actually look into it. It could be fun. You'll ever may launch ice cream from cow free dairy in a year. This is an update to a previous store because we've been talking about precision fermentation. And here it is, Brian. Here's the headline. You wait for things to happen and then there it is in front of you. Yeah. And the dairy industry likely to be the very first of the animal based products to be severely disrupted. Here's a clip from the robot who reads the Bloomberg stories. The company is working on a process called precision fermentation that uses substances like yeast and fungi to produce milk proteins in a VAT. A product could be available in about a year. If successful, unilever could be the first major food company to create an ice cream made from cow free dairy, dubbed lab grown milk. In a burgeoning industry dominated by smaller startups, a consumer giant like Unilever developing a precision fermentation version of one of its major brands raises hopes that the technology can scale up and be cost effective. The idea is that it's going to be cheaper and then also cleaner. Much cleaner. Yeah. I think a version of this ice cream already exists because there was a picture of Tony Siba eating some of it in that last YouTube video that he put up. So I think this does exist, but it's probably kind of expensive and only in health food stores. Whereas Unilever would make it a mass market product. It would probably be quite expensive. Yeah. So right now, the ideas he says by 2030 that the proteins in milk is going to be replaced by fake stuff, precision fermentation, and it's going to be cheaper and dairy is going to go bankrupt. And this is the first sign of that happening. They're doing it. Maybe they'll advertise it as an expensive but greener option, I'm guessing. At first, yeah. And more expensive at first, but I think eventually, ultimately cheaper. And unlike beyond meat, there really will not be a difference. It will be identical. It'll be very identical. Yeah. Because you're mostly tasting the fat and the sugar. The milk protein is a minor part. I think most of it is water. It's 10%. That's not water. That's the part you replace. The others are fats and sugars, which are easily replaced, obviously. Yeah. Anyway, speaking of Japanese automakers, Mazda looks like it could be, and I'm not convinced of this, but it could be doing something significant. They could be the first of the Japanese automakers to actually set a target. That is reasonable. Mazda is raising its EV sales target to 40% by 2030 and they're investing $11 billion to accelerate this transition. Sounds like they got the memo. Yeah, well, we were making fun of them for their MX 30, which is. A very low range electric car. They are down to selling, like, only a handful of them. So they've been a real laggard. And so this is their first step up to the plate. I mean, it's not maybe what it should be, but it sounds like they're getting the idea. Right. That's something. It's probably too late. I don't want to be a naysayer, but at least they have a target. Hopefully they survive. Brian 505. I've sold more brownies at bake sales than they have in these cars. It's 100 miles of range, 160 range, which is in today's market, no good unless it's a cheap car. But it's 33,000 us. Yeah, that's a lot of money. You expect something for that. I mean, you can get a Leaf, you can get a Chevy Bolt that does way more mileage than that and probably is a more capable car. Yeah, for maybe only slightly more money. And they even said this EV has been sold out, so you can't find one. So there was a demand there. There's going to be some Mazda fans who want to go EV. But anyway, this is a story about VW maybe delaying their EV plans. Like, VW was maybe one of the great hopes of the EV transition. And now the CEO's been replaced, right? Yeah. As we reported, they're on track to deliver 500,000 EVs this year, which is a significant amount. That's way ahead of everybody else except for Tesla. Herbert Dies was their CEO that put all this in motion. He really had a radical vision for VW and really felt like it had to be a radical remaking of the company or, you know, they were going to run into problems. And so yeah, so he started a lot of ambitious programs that have gotten them to 5000 EVs a year, which is significant. But he was sort of moved out recently as CEO, and the new CEO is definitely scaling back these plans to be much less ambitious. I don't like that. No, I think Herbert Dees was on the right track. And you what, like with Mazda? So Mazda wants to sell 40% EVs by 2030, but that means there's going to be people to buy the 60% of EVs that are gas in 2030. No, it doesn't work that way. Doesn't work that way. When EVs are available, people are not going to want the gas cars. So I don't know. The new CEO of VW seems to be betting that such things are possible. And every car commercial on television is electric. Can you buy the cars? Not so much. Not so much. But for some reason, we're in this weird time where, yeah, all the car companies are vying to look like. Then there's Toyota, who says, we're electrified. That's enough. Right? Electrified. So, VW, they've got the second generation platform that they were planning to come out in 2026. They call this their trinity. EV. And now it's going to be more like 2030. Under the new CEO, 26 might have been difficult to actually achieve, but if you're moving the goal post down to 2030, even 2030 may not be moving it up to 2024. And hey, you may not make the deadline, but the commission should be moving up anyway. So that's a three year delay, basically. Or worse. Let's hope not. And that's no good. We can't deal with that. And it was already a kind of a target that wasn't even as gracious as it should be. They've got a lot. It takes a lot to turn a giant ship like VW around. I don't know. They're the best at it. The biggest car company in the world are the best at it. They are manufacturing in and out well. They do really well to get up to 5000. That's impressive. I think what they're not getting is what you said, that once the pendulum sort of swings towards EVs and that the weight starts to get on the teeter totter on the EV side, look out, it's not going anywhere else. It's going to chip way over and then you're going to be caught with your pants down. So who's going to be able to provide those cars? Hopefully? Well, Tesla, you and I are already at the point where we would never in a million years consider buying another gasoline car. But we're still kind of the outliers. But every year the percentage of people who won't consider a gas car just goes up. Yeah, and it is regular people are considering EVs. And there's people around here with pickup trucks. I'm reading about them all the time. Their neighbors are, their business associates are, their clients are. This becomes normalized very quickly now. It's really going to pick up. Yeah. So, moving on to Tokyo, the governor of Tokyo, this is Eureka Koiki, has suggested everybody wear turtlenecks to help reduce their energy bills. Okay. It's sort of a funny thing and a fun thing to make a joke about off the top of the show, but I'm in favor of this. There's an energy crisis going on. Everybody's going to be struggling to make enough power, make enough heat. Can I make a turtleneck work? I mean, not everybody can. Yeah, I don't think I own any turtlenecks, but everybody. The idea is that dress warm and you can save money on your electricity bills, which are going up in Tokyo, just like they're kind of tending to go up everywhere is in my neck. That's the coldest thing, though. I mean, really. Well, the idea is here's the quote, warming the neck has a thermal effect. I'm wearing a turtleneck myself. And wearing a scarf also keeps you warm. This will save electricity. This is what the governor of Tokyo said around the house is true. He wants people around their tiny little Tokyo apartments to wear a scarf. I mean, it sounds radical, but why not? We have a problem here. I don't know what it's like in other places, but we often have this problem in North America where like, office buildings particularly often have very poor heating or cooling that can't be controlled very well. So there's often a problem around here where people have to wear sweaters in the summer because the air conditioning is ranked too high and nobody can seem to turn it down. Or I've actually heard of people who have electric space heaters under their roof. Yeah, I've seen that it's really bad in the summer. I've seen that it's too cold because the air conditioning is too high. That's not good. Yeah, so you're overusing the air conditioning and then some poor employee has to use UTC heater to sort of gain back the energy. So I think this in many ways, used to be like a common sense thing where people just dressed warmer in the winter because it was kind of common sense. But then you go to work in an office building where the heat is all wonky, so maybe it's too hot in your office in the wintertime and then you just end up wearing a Tshirt instead in the winter. It's all messed up. I wear fleeces and sweaters inside the house now, but that's because I'm getting old, right? Yeah. I'm still turning up the temperature tin more than it should be. And then I'm also wearing those things. That's not good. I do the same thing. Yeah, it's not good at all. I can't laugh, by the way. Otherwise I'll go into a coffee and fits. I don't sound anything funny. Well, Brian, as you know, the World Cup has started. And I know you don't have world cup fever, but I do. Is that what you're suffering from? Sure. I took a title for my World Cup fever this morning. Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia and the biggest upset in World Cup history. Some people say, wow, I'm sorry, Argentina, if you're listening. In fact, this is probably way too soon for me to even bring it up, but I apologize anyway. Of course, all the coverage, it's been announced like ten years ago that they were getting this. So a Qatar, which is a small nation state with oil, was accused of using their oil money to spend on the World Cup and bribe. And there's been some people who've actually been, you know, charges and so forth. There's a new Netflix documentary. I won't make you watch it, but it's there. OK on FIFA. This is a tiny Middle Eastern autocracy with a population of barely 3 million people. How do they get the world's biggest sporting event? You know, like, this is by far the world's biggest sporting event. It happens only every four years, but the temperatures there in the summer are 50 degrees Celsius or 122 Fahrenheit. And that's when the World Cup you normally played during that time and I, as you know, was in Death Valley when it was that temperature. And I could only get out of my healthier, man then, and I could only get out of my car for ten minutes at a time. My kids could do 1213. But then you're like facing the Grim Reaper. He starts to encroach on your area, looking for you, to kill you, because you can't play soccer in that, I guess. They spent $200 billion of their petrol money on this games. They've built eight stadiums. One of them I'll talk about in a minute. That's a little bit different than the other ones. It's recyclable, we'll just put it that way. But yeah, they've got air conditioning. The temperature is only 24 degrees with like 64% humidity. These games have been checking on them. So, yeah, it's perfectly reasonable for soccer. But I read you a bit from the Atlantic here. It says Qatar might now be home to about 3 million people, but the proportion of actual Qatari citizens who lived there is a little more than 10%. So there's hardly any. The rest compromised some very rich expatriates of other nations and a huge army of poor migrants up to 6000. And some may have died, by the way. This is a whole separate issue which is not part of our show. But my God. My point is that this is the pinnacle of oil decadence. And to think that thousands of lives were not cared about and lost from other countries to make this destruction of everything and we'll never have this again. This is peak oil. I don't think we'll see crap like this ever again. This is the moment in time where it's all going to fall apart. They did not have any infrastructure, they're not a sporting nation, they didn't have a fan base, they had nothing. But they were very rich with their oil money. But Brian, their new money, they haven't had this money for very long at all. Guitar has had huge reserves of natural gas, which was discovered, I think, quite a while ago, maybe the by Shell, but they just left it there because they couldn't do anything with it. They had all this natural gas and nowhere to get it anywhere. So in the was this coup, I think the leader of the country, the King or whatever the term they use for it, left to go on vacation to England and his son took over. Which is why if I'm ever in that situation, I'm never leaving because my son would take over in a second. He was just sorry, Dan. But he did a good thing for the country in a way, because he invested in liquefied natural gas tank so that it could be transported on a ship. So when you cool it natural gas. It's like transporting oil on a tanker. But it's ridiculous how much -165 degrees celsius or something like that they are now the third richest country in the world. And they learned how to extract natural gas from the ground much more cheaply. So even after they cool it and put it on a ship, a tanker full of natural gas is four times cheaper from Qatar than if it originated in the United States through their normal channels. That's why they are so rich, is because their gas is cheap, even though they have to do that. So they started a sovereign wealth fund, though this is the shocking part that I didn't know about. Even though they blew 200 billion on these Games to make them a respectable country, which is not working out, by the way, because all we're doing is talking about how crappy they are, the LGBTQ rights and everything like that, and the fact that they can't serve beer at the games. And they yanked that privilege two days before. So they started a sovereign wealth fund like Norway did, and they have $300 billion in it because they saw the writing on the wall. They knew that our Canadian jurisdictions here who have oil in the provinces don't think that way at all. They think spend, spend oil forever. But when you had something they didn't always used to have this. So they've only had it since the 90s. So in that short time, they've got a 300 billion dollar sovereign wealth fund and they're building up infrastructure. Part of the game spending is that to make it for an investment possible. And I don't know that that's going to work, especially with their human rights problems, that a whole lot of people are going to go there, but they are planning for the end of oil by diversifying their investments around the world. So, yeah, that fund is going to do all kinds of things around the world. So there's been of course, it's supposed to be a carbon neutral World Cup. And it's a joke. It's a bloody joke. Here's a clip from Bloomberg. Organizers estimate that the World Cup will emit three six megatons of carbon dioxide. International flights in and out of Doha will account for the majority of emissions. However, organizers argue that this World Cup will be more energy efficient than others, since fans won't have to fly to different venues and can instead just take public transit. The sticking point is always the flights. Most Olympics and World Cups, it accounts to more than 85% of total emissions. So that surprised me. I guess it makes perfect sense when you hear it, but it's not the building of these eight giant stadiums and you know, all the infrastructure around it, it's the flights and during the actual Games. And it's the same with the Olympics. It's a very carbon intense thing when all these people do that. Yeah, when you got to travel so many people around the world, that's what you do, you fly. Now, the game today was in stadium nine seven four, which is built with shipping containers it's not entirely shipping containers. It's like steel girders and shipping containers. But the 400 seat stadium can be disassembled and rebuilt elsewhere. So this is the world's first tear down build a back stadium, supposedly, and apparently, if everything goes on shipping containers, it can be shipped anywhere. Yes. So this will be available for my Ikea soon. Quite the price, but yes, it was designed by a French architectural firm. Other things they're trying to do is they have built solar farms to offset the emissions from the games. They're using electric buses, an electric mass transit. So that's good. They're not burning their own product, and they are supposedly buying carbon offsets, but they're way behind on that. Brian yeah. So Domino's Pizza has announced, and this sort of falls into that category of story that we're going to have to stop reporting soon, because this is just going to be business as usual very soon and maybe is already. But Domino's Pizza in the US. Has ordered 800 Chevy bolts, and they're kind of custom painted with the Domino's logo and everything. And they've got about 100 of them so far. And these are going out to Domino's Pizza locations in the US. So they will eventually have 800 fully electric delivery vehicles for the fleet of pizza delivery vehicles. And of course, they're doing this because it just makes sense. And the bolt is not a particularly expensive car. So imagine all the money they'll save on gas. This is just the EV calculation that every business in the world is going to be making when it comes to fleet vehicles. I wish on your Domino's app, if you could select an EV to have it delivered like you can on other apps for a ride sharing, that would be nice. Do you ever eat domino's? Never. I would think he would hate Domino's. That would be an anti Brian pizza right there. No, when we have excellent pizza to choose from in our city, I don't see a reason to use donald okay, well, I agree. The pizza shows up in advance a lot of times where people have some there. Okay, so Joe Biden has promised $13 billion for the US. Power grid. So this is part of the green spending from the US. And as we talk about frequently on the show, the grid all over the world is going to need some upgrades. And so this is a decent amount of money, $13 billion to upgrade the grid. And as we go greener in the next couple of decades, it's important to get the foundation correct first before we do that. So this is a nice, like, really forward looking thing. I think that the US government is doing $13 billion available to do grid upgrades around the country. So I think that's great. It is subsidizing what they could probably do themselves, though. How do you feel about that? Yeah, well, I mean, it's a weird thing about all of this spending. Right. Because companies like Tesla don't even need subsidies, really. Their cars are profitable already and yet they're going to benefit from these subsidies. So it's always a bit weird and taxing fossil fuels. A carbon tax, it would probably have been the better way to go with all of this. But however it gets done, there are certain things politically that are difficult to do. Like a carbon tax. Yes. It wouldn't necessarily be my first choice for how to deal with it, but at least they're dealing with it. Let's dip into the mailbag. Brian. This is a message from Nick. Hello, Brian and James. I live in New England, and recently got a 2022 Ford Mac E. That is an electric vehicle, small crossover. Right. My battery life, as he calls it, was originally at 230 miles. He means range. So the range of that car when he first got it was 230 miles or 370 colder out. It is 170 miles and 274. So it's a lot. About 100, roughly of range. So I know about range decreasing in colder weather. My question is, does the range come back when the weather gets warmer? With the cost of new EVs, a range of 170 miles is not acceptable. Fan of the show since day one. Thanks. Wow. Thanks. How many episodes? 140. Congratulations, Nick. Thank you for sticking with us. So, yes, I would be bold. Enough to say that I think, James, you and I are the two leading experts in the world on EVs and cold weather. Yes. You've come to the right place, Nick, because Alaska has nothing on us. We're in the Southern Canadian prairies where it gets to -40 and it has recently not this year, but it has and -40 celsius is the same as -40 fahrenheit that's where the two scales cross over. Yeah, it does get that cold here. So I don't know everything about how the mach e battery meter works, but yeah, usually the range on any car is calculated on your recent trips. So if your recent trips have been in the cold then your car is going to be smart enough to figure, okay, well, the next trip is going to be so I assume that range will come back in the summer. Of course it will. But in a way, Brian, this is a stupid question for us, to us, for people like us. But that concerns me that the people buying EVs, really, that there are things that this would be scary to somebody nick's, obviously an EV enthusiast, but a regular person who doesn't care, who just goes out and buys their next car, might be very concerned about this if they don't know about it. That's right. You're going to look at the range thing. Now, the one thing I can recommend is I don't know if you can do this in your car, but in a Tesla you can change the battery to percentage rather than miles. Or kilometers. So when I first bought my car, it would give me the range in kilometers and started around 400 km. But then you tend to get obsessed about that range and every time you plug it in, it's like, oh, it's 5 km less than it was last time I charged it. So I just switched it to percentage. And so then you don't end up obsessing about that mileage. But then if you're going on a trip, you use the trip calculator. And the trip calculator will tell you in a Tesla that gives you a graph that says, okay, you'll get at your destination and your battery will be 20%. And that's what you monitor. And sometimes it's a little bit off in a Tesla. Now these days, about 5% error. Is that's pretty good though? Actually for this they are getting better. It used to be about a 10% error where it would tell you, oh, your battery will be 20% at your destination and then you'd get there and it would be more like 10%. Yeah, is way worse though. So we're slowing down that's one tip. Yeah, it's switching it to percentage and not worrying about it. Now when you get to the summer and it is not giving you the same range, it is always possible that your battery has cells that have deteriorated or something. So it is something you have to keep an eye on, but presumably that will come back. Yeah. And the way we do it on the Leaf is you put in the little data reader you buy on Amazon. It's a bluetooth device. For $20. It hooks up to an app for your car that's made by a third party. Mine is called Leaf Spy. Tesla is a little different because they have a different connector. I don't know how you guys do it or even if you need to, but there would be if you got into this, you can see how your battery is doing and know the state of health of it, but this means nothing. Okay, so let's say you lived in Hawaii where it's the same temperature every day. If you drove like a mad person for a day or two, it would show that you have a lesser battery, right. Because you're driving with a heavy lead foot. But if you're driving like a nun, then you're going very slow and gentle and that's going to show a higher range. It's not really showing what your battery is capable of, it's just what it's capable of based on your recent driving. And that is a weird concept to get around to people. And also I mentioned too, it is typical for batteries to lose range like battery degradation. And the typical formula seems to be you are going to lose about 5% of your battery in the first couple of years and then it kind of slows out. So I assume my battery has lost about 5% of its capacity but I don't know exactly how I would confirm that. Yeah, and it's not something you should obsess about. You should know that when you buy the evidence, buy bigger than you think you need, and then you don't worry about that. Right. That's always a good thing. But there's lots we can talk about here very quickly. Okay. Now, the first thing is that in winter, a gas car loses range. You just don't notice it. You're not thinking about that. Right. There's many factors. There is the dense winter air, so your aerodynamics are off. This affects EVs a little bit more because they're more efficient. And they're also usually more dependent on the aerodynamics of the vehicle for efficiency. So if you put winter tires on, that's going to be less efficient, for sure. That could lose you 10%. It could lose even more depending on what your tires there's the snow on the ground or ice on the ground. The fact that it's just not a smooth, rolling surface. It's like if you're pedaling a bike through snow, it's going to be harder to pedal that bike. There are different factors like that the battery becomes less strong in cold weather. When the battery is cold, it's chemically not capable of holding as much of a charge. It can't hold as much of a charge, the battery, in colder weather. And don't forget that you're using your battery to heat your cabin. That is a lot of heat. Even if it's a heat pump, even if it's just not that cold, but a little bit cold, you're still using a lot of energy. In fact, it's different in every car. Your car is a PTC heater. Mine is, too. So it's just like a toaster. It's like red hot elements heating up. That's the least efficient. And then the heat pumps. Sometimes there's both a heat pump and a PTC heater. Sometimes there's just a heat pump that uses less energy, but it's still using energy. Brian yeah. When I checked in, the Mustang Machoe does not have a heat pump heater. So it has a normal oh, really? Heater, which is not as energy efficient. So you're definitely going to lose range with that. Yeah, you're definitely going to use range. Unless you're using it to make these long trips on the highway, then that's when the only time you really need to concern yourself. Unless you have a long commute, for the most part. If you can charge every night at home, just don't think about it. Nick. Don't think about it. Enjoy your fast heating car and your efficiency and how wonderful it is. And, you know, keep us up to date, too, as you drive it through the winter, because we're not in the worst part of winter yet. Drop us a line again and how you like the car and how it made it through the winter. Yeah. And it's really only on road trips that you ever need to think About It. If you're just driving around the city like you said, you charge at home, you're always going to have enough. With Tesla, they spaced the superchargers about 150 km apart. Roughly. It varies a bit. So that's about 100 miles apart. If you're going to go nick on a road trip. You want to make sure that there is a charging station. Roughly every 100 miles and you should be fine like around here when it does get -40 I don't think it's going to get to -40 where nick is so he's probably not going to have to worry about it. But they based on about right. So mine. I've got the standard range. Tesla model. Three and it can just barely make it between chargers when it's -40. If it's only -20. -15 celsius. I mean it's not constantly -40 but we call that the worst case scenario around here. Okay. EV drivers call that you want to be prepared for the worst case scenario. We've gone years without it getting that cold. Yeah. And then the last couple of years, it's gotten a few days. That cold. So you want to be prepared for those days. And it's usually only that cold overnight. But last winter, and this was covered on the podcast, I drove up to Saskatoon and The Daytime Temperatures was -36 Celsius, which is about -32 Fahrenheit daytime Temperatures. This was at Noon, and that's what I had to drive through and just kind of barely made it in my Standard Range car. Yeah. So that's an issue. And another thing to keep in mind is if you are doing highway trips so that in winter it charges slower, the battery can't take the charge as fast because it's like regenerative braking too. You can't put your brakes back into the battery pack as well when it's cold. No, that's kind of the biggest thing for me because summer road trips, I'm only spending about 20 minutes at the charger. But the winter road trips in these cold conditions, it's more like you're spending an hour at the charger. And at that point, it gets annoying. And I'm at the point now where if this winter, I have to drive up to Saskatoon and it's -40, I'm going to take a gas car because I just don't want that. I have to wait an hour at the charging station. The worst case scenario in the worst place in the world is what we're talking about. And we tell people around here that you could lose up to 50%. It varies from car to car. I've heard somebody talking to about 17% in his ionic five when it wasn't too cold. Okay, but that's, like, the worst worst case scenario. Now, if you're driving around the city and you do 60 miles in a day, at the very worst, and you have 170 miles, who cares? You plug in at night, it's going to charge the same way as it always does. If. You're on the highway and it takes you a half hour to charge, it might take you an hour to charge. And that's a major change, too, in habits to be aware of. Yeah. And of course, electric cars, they're not as efficient on the highway as they are in the city. Higher speeds are tougher for electric cars. You drain the battery a lot faster. And I really wish that when they publicized the range for electric cars, that they did a highway figure and a city figure. I think that's the way it should be done. But they don't do that. They pick a number kind of somewhere in between the two. Yeah, but you'll get used to this, Nick. There's a lot of weird little things that people fret about when they try something new. I did it. Brian did it. It's normal. We EV owners tend to think too much, but just enjoy the car. You'll get used to it. And tell your friends about it. Time for the lightning round of fast paced look at the rest of the news. And Brian, we've overstayed her welcome, which is good because I don't have a lot of stories. This week. Rivian starts international deliveries of the R one T, rather, and the R one S in Canada. So you've seen one here, right? Yeah. It must have been an American one that drove up over the border, because I saw one on the road. But yeah, officially, deliveries of the Ribbean just started in Canada. Now, post the IRA, the inflation reduction at next era expects wind with storage will cost $14 per megawatt hour United States later this decade. This is only because this act was passed. And solar with batteries, $17 per mega, 1 hour. This is down because of this act. This is how much the IRA is going to affect everything and speed things up, if I may say. Yeah, for sure. This is a Brian story. I can't believe you didn't see this one, Brian. There's a induction oven maker who has added a battery to their stoves. Lithium battery. This is because, I guess some of these induction stoves use a lot of draw, right? Yeah. And some places aren't wired for it. And you'd have to get an extra panel if your panels full. So they've solved that problem. Interestingly with putting a battery in a stove. That makes a lot of sense. Yeah. So the big draw when you need it comes from the batteries. Well, we talked about this before in terms of heat pump, water heaters, because that's a similar problem with those, because you tend to need a few thousand watts to run those, I think up to 7000 watts to run an induction cooktop. So that's a lot of juice. It's one of the reasons I did a panel upgrade on my house. But it cost a few thousand dollars to go from 100 amp to 200 amp. So I guess the idea is you can charge up this battery and so it can draw more power. You can sort of just plug it into in a regular outlet, as it was, but with the battery have much bigger output. Right. So that solves that problem. But it's just weird, that sort of appliance with a battery in it. And I imagine it adds to the price, but it's cheaper than maybe rewiring your house, if you want to do that. So I thought I thought it was quite interesting BYD the Chinese, mostly EV maker and bus maker has sold as 3,000,000th, Bee, V or PHEV. I thought that was an interesting milestone. Some are plug in hybrids, but that's still an impressive number. Oh, it's time for a CS. Past 636 fossil fuel lobbyists were preying on government delegations at Cock. Oily bastards. That's a lot. Scotland approves a 38 megawatt solar plant next door to a closed nuclear plant. And guess how much the objections were in the community? Zero. No objects were their objections. Will they put up a nuclear plant? Probably. Probably. Some concern solar. Not so harmful, not so scary. A village in the French Alps this is from CNN demolishes its ski lift because there's no snow left. It hasn't snowed in years. lack of snow meant that the last time it ran was about 15 years ago, and just for one weekend. And since then, it has not been. This is sad. Sad. This is why the Winter Olympics will now be held in Qatar with fake snow and perhaps potato flakes. Finally, this week, India is looking to produce its own solar modules to meet all of its demand and then some. That's right. India requires a lot of solar, and they want to make it themselves. You know, it makes sense. Perfectly capable country of ramping up something like this. I'm looking for takers for a $2.4 billion in government aid to offer stimulation to domestic manufacturing of solar equipment. They want to do all of their solar and export all as well. That's great news. That is our time for this week and a bunch more. I apologize to myself more than anything. My body wasn't ready to go long. It was ready to go short this week, and I went long. So see you next week. See you next week. Bye.

The Toyota Prius is arguably the most well-known hybrid vehicle in the world, and its Prime-badged plug-in hybrid is right there with it. Launched at the start of the new millennium, the Toyota Prius has helped push hybrid powertrains to the forefront of American consumers. The plug-in Prius Prime joined the Prius nameplate in 2012 and entered its current generation in 2016. Powering the current Prius Prime is a 1.8-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that feeds Toyota's Electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Combining the engine with the electric motor, the Prius Prime throws 121 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Just down from the Prius Prime at your local Toyota dealer is the Toyota Sequoia: a V8-powered, body-on-frame SUV. The Sequoia launched its second-generation effort all the way back in 2007 and hasn't changed significantly in the last 15 years. While Toyota has announced and shown the next-generation Sequoia, it's still waiting to head into production. That next-generation Sequoia will ditch the 381 hp and 401 hp 5.7-liter V8 and replace it with a turbocharged V6. Still, the second-generation Sequoia offers off-road capability and bold styling, if you can't wait for its replacement. On this bonus episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren sits down with Autoweek's Editor in Chief Natalie Neff to talk about her time with this unlikely pair of Toyotas. They talk about the driving dynamics and experiences with both of these Toyotas and show where both shine and both falter. The pair also break down the constantly changing SUV and small car landscape and the growing new car crisis.
On this week's episode our hosts dive deep into a pair of cars that struggle to impress. First Sami describes the mild updates to the 2022 Volvo XC60 B6, which gets a new Johan De Nysschen-like nomenclature to go along with a Google-branded operating system and a beefy 48-volt electrical system. Is the twin-charged motor and minimalist styling enough to save this Swedish luxury crossover from Sami's ire and discontent? Next, Benjamin gets his hands on the 2022 Toyota Prius Prime, a plug-in variant of the popular, yet one-note hybrid. Listen to how Benjamin's frustrating experience with the car's electric range fails to match up with its advertised figures, then hear his one weird trick to using as little gas as possible. The company is adding output of a second battery-powered car at the factory in addition to the full-electric XC40 Recharge compact SUV." says Automotive News Europe: "The new EV will use the same architecture as the XC40 Recharge. Volvo will provide more details on the model, which is expected to be called the C40, on March 2. Volvo plans to launch a new full-electric car every year until 2025, when it expects that half of its global sales will be battery-powered models. Volvo estimates output of full-electric cars at Ghent will triple from 2020 to 2022, at which time full-electric cars will account for about 60 percent of the plant's total production capacity." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/volvo-will-triple-ev-output-belgium-plant FORD MUSTANG MACH-E HAS BETTER RESIDUAL VALUES THAN NAMESAKE PONY CAR "The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least it has a better residual value than the Mustang pony car, the vehicle it got its name from. Hyundai will compete in the inaugural Pure ETCR series against other electric touring cars from Alfa Romeo, Cupra, and MG." https://jalopnik.com/hyundai-will-unleash-its-electric-veloster-n-race-car-a-1846113842 BP PULSE PARTNERS WITH JUMPTECH "BP Pulse has signed a new contract with Jumptech to help grow electric vehicle (EV) charger installations. BP Pulse, the O&G major's emobility division, will use Jumptech’s platform to streamline the installation of chargers by simplifying processes and improving information flows, it said." according to Current News: "Jumpech’s platform is designed to allow customers to easily supply information about their property and the desired installation for home charging applications, including imagery. This then gets sent to BP Pulse’s team of advisors, enabling them to process the application. The company is planning to expand its public charge point portfolio from 7,000 today to 16,000 by 2030. This will include 1,400 ultra-fast chargers." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/bp-pulse-partners-with-jumptech-as-it-looks-to-expand-charger-installations-beyond-100-000 EDF AND VOLKSWAGEN PARTNER ON E-MOBILITY IN FRANCE "EDF’s renewable energy offerings will be recommended to buyers of Volkswagen Group electric vehicles (EVs) in France. Under the agreement, buyers of EVs from any of the Volkswagen Group’s brands will be advised of EDF’s regional green electricity offerings either via the internet or through the sales networks." says Smart Energy: "The offer also supports the Volkswagen Group’s zero-emissions strategy for 2050. The Group intends to invest €33 billion ($39.9 billion) in e-mobility up to 2024 and plans up to 75 new EVs by 2029." https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/electric-vehicles/edf-volkswagen-partner-on-e-mobility-in-france/ SIEMENS LAUNCHES 96% EFFICIENT SICHARGE D FAST CHARGER "Siemens introduces a new Sicharge D fast charger, marketing it as one of the most efficient DC charger on the market. The rated efficiency is 95.5%, but at peak, it's 96%. The Sicharge D is modular and upgradable, with several power outputs - 160 kW, 180 kW, 240 kW and 300 kW. The cool thing about it is the dynamic power allocation between the two DC outputs (plus an optional AC output)." reports InsideEVs: "The Sicharge D can handle voltage from 150 V up to 1,000 V, which makes the charger suitable for the 800 V (nominal) battery systems. The maximum current output is 1,000 A." https://insideevs.com/news/467406/siemens-96-efficient-sicharge-d-fast-charger/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS I asked: what was the moment you realised you wanted to drive electric. RAJEEV NARAYAN For decades I have been interested in decarbonizing cars, and have been interested in Biofuels, hybrids, and eventually EVs as they started to become viable. In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. A short time later I discovered your wonderful show! Since then we now have 2 EVs and charge them with solar. tallman “When my Prius Prime gets to 0% and the engine starts. ☹️“ ROBERT BAXTER I first knew that I wanted to drive an EV in August 2012 when I test drove a Nissan Leaf. However, I did not buy the Nissan Leaf because it was going to be our new car and had to be able to handle our 400 mile round-trips that we made a couple times a month. Therefore I looked at the main two alternatives (in the US) the Chevrolet Volt and the Prius Plugin hybrid. The Chevrolet volt was just a little bit too small. However I will say that I loved the car. We settled on the Prius plug-in. I have had the car now for 8 1/2 years and I'm averaging 91 miles per gallon. The car got 12 miles on a charge when I purchased it now over eight years later it gets about 9 miles on a charge. The car has got 73,000 miles on it and not so much as a widget has been replaced. I do the routine maintenance at the dealership and that is all. My next car will be electric however, I'm kind of like you in that I am a value oriented individual and it's hard to get rid of a car that serves you well every day without so much as a hiccup and provides 90+ miles per gallon. JONATHAN PRICE A: Within minutes of our first Zoe ZE40 test drive in early 2017. We bought a nearly new ZE40 soon afterwards, then another, and now we have a ZE50 on 2 year lease. PHIL KEPP After taking a first drive in a LEAF. Also drove a MICRA, which was OK but not inspiring. What then remained was (a) getting wife's agreement (which proved surprisingly easy - once SHE had a quick drive) and (b) waiting for my choice of LEAF to arrive (some months). DON MILLER, NORTH CAROLINA Back in the 60s a retired neighbor had an electric golf/mail cart and use to take me to little league practice. I remember how quite it was and what a blast it was as we zipped along. Never forgot about those trips and what I know now was the EV grin on my face. KARL CRAMER I knew I wanted to drive an EV since I saw Ed Begley Jr. driving around in one in the ‘90s. Totally geeked out on the technology. JUSTIN PAVLICK I knew I wanted to drive and encourage everyone else to drive an EV when I was on a run. I was running down Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh in between classes, which just happened to be during rush hour traffic. Running along the road with all of the cars spewing garbage into the air that I was breathing. It made it very difficult to breathe without coughing. The final straw was when a diesel powered bus came by and bombarded me with its exhaust right in my face. That was the moment I realized how much better it would be if we electrified all of the vehicles on the road. That is when I decided to buy an EV and push for EV adoption in my area. I am now working for an electric utility and helping with our utility owned car charging stations and EV policies! PAUL PELOWSKI For me, it was the first time I drove a Model S, in early 2019 or maybe it was 2018. I was raised around American muscle cars. The bigger, louder and stinkier the better. Then I drove the Model S. It wasn’t the strange, lame looking EV I’d seen before. Didn’t have ridiculous wheels, oh and it got up and took off like a rocket. Suddenly everything gas powered after that seemed antiquated. Now the only decision is which EV is right for us here in the States. IAIN SEAR I've always been interested in EVs and green issues, probably from when I was at school in the early 90s I remember having lesson on Ozone damage, recycling and the environment and that stuck with me. The first time I got really interested in a real car was when I saw news reports on a Welsh EV prototype in the noughties. Nothing came of it but I kept an eye on EV development from that point. Then in 2013 I noticed a fancy black Tesla on the base I was working at and thought this is it, sadly I couldn't afford one until last month (well my partner afforded it), should have bought some tesla shares at that point and I could of retired!

TESLA CYBERTRUCK IS AT THE PETERSEN MUSEUM "Like most Tesla products pre-release, the Cybertruck is shrouded in an air of mystery. Nobody’s really seen it anywhere except for the reveal event. There have been some videos of Elon Musk driving it around, and a "Jay Leno’s Garage" episode aired, but the public hasn’t been allowed to get up close and personal with it yet. That’s changed this week, because the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles currently has it on display. " says Autoblog today: "If you happen to be located in the area, you can go and see the Cybertruck in person. Petersen is taking reservations for entry to the museum — there are no walk-ins for the time being. The Cybertruck itself won’t be hanging out for long, though. Petersen says the truck will only be in the museum through July 5. The stainless steel is striking and the truck is intimidating. It’s huge, and weird, and it still looks like it’s from outer space." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/23/tesla-cybertruck-petersen-museum-showing/#slide-2243823 TESLA GIGA SHANGHAI IS SEEING A MYSTERIOUS EXPANSON "The pace of Gigafactory Shanghai’s construction has reached a point where it is now normal to see massive buildings being built from the ground up in but a few months. Over the past few months, all eyes were focused on the site’s Phase 2A zone, which happens to be the upcoming Model Y factory. Recent flyovers of the Gigafactory Shanghai complex show that the construction activities in the area are now going far beyond the Model Y plant." according to Simon at Teslarati: "As could be seen in a recent video posted by Tesla enthusiast and drone operator Jason Yang, the Model Y factory in Gigafactory Shanghai is quickly coming to form. But another story is forming right beside Tesla’s expansive Model Y factory in China. What is interesting is that Tesla has so far been very quiet about the nature of these upcoming structures." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-shanghai-model-y-factory-mysterious-video/ PORSCHE TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO SPIED TESTING WITH SEDAN COUNTERPART "The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is official – at least we've seen several spy shots to prove that. Plus, Stuttgart has already confirmed the all-electric wagon's launch towards the end of this year. With that said, Porsche has all its hands on deck in developing the production version of the Mission E Cross Turismo." says Motor1.com: "Our spy photographers were able to spot the Taycan Cross Turismo more than two months ago testing in the snow. This time, however, recent spy shots show it testing with its sedan counterpart. Despite that, the Cross Turismo is, of course, highly based on the Taycan's architecture; it's the first among the Taycan-based derivatives – the pillar stone of Porsche's push for electrification. As such, expect the same powertrain options for the Taycan Cross Turismo, with power outputs ranging from 530 horsepower (395 kilowatts) to 761 hp (567 kW). The Taycan Cross Turismo will hit the global stage towards the end of this year." https://www.motor1.com/news/429905/taycan-cross-turismo-spy-images/ INFINITI PLANS TO LAUNCH ONE PURE EV, ONE 'GAS-POWERED EV' TO BECOME SUSTAINABLE "Infiniti has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and it drop several models in order to be prevented from losing money. But at the same time, new models will be added to the range, even electrified ones and it seems that all will be performance-oriented." reports InsideEVs: "According to a report published on Automotive News, which interviewed Infiniti’s chairman, Peyman Kargar, who confirmed plans to introduce one pure EV, as well as a "gas-powered EV." While the former seems like a straightforward model, the latter has us a bit intrigued. It will apparently be a performance-oriented electric vehicle that will have a rather small battery pack (it will rely on the gasoline engine to run continually and produce power); it will also be branded 'e-Power,' suggesting it will be similar to other models sold by Nissan under the same moniker. However, it will be different from Nissan’s other e-Power models because it will be a performance-focused model. We don’t know exactly how quick this new model will be, but this information, along with the model’s name will be disclosed in a few months." https://insideevs.com/news/429541/infiniti-ev-e-power-new-models-announced/ ELECTRIC VEHICLE CAR SALES WILL BOUNCE BACK RAPIDLY Google Trends data show that, since the PM’s launch of the COVID-19 recovery strategy (11 May), there has been a significant boom in demand across the automotive industry - so much so that the demand is now parallel with the numbers pre-lockdown, this surge in demand is especially evident in the electric vehicle industry. The Road to Recovery Dashboard: Electric Vehicles is part of a tool built by LeaseFetcher, a car leasing comparison site based in Scotland. “The dashboard aims to observe long term and immediate changes in demand and will help inform predictions about the future for the electric vehicle and automotive industry,” says Will Craig, Founder of LeaseFetcher. Pulling its raw data from Google Trends on a weekly basis, the tool provides an invaluable insight into consumer sentiment and behaviour. In March, demand across the automotive industry nosedives. Now, following the announcement on the 11th of May, introducing step one of the recovery strategy, demand is once again on the rise. While search volume for ‘electric car’ hasn’t yet returned to its pre-COVID, record-breaking levels, there’s every indication that it will do soon. ‘Electric car’ has already surpassed 2019 levels. TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC CARS COULD BOOST UK ECONOMY BY £24BN "NEW GOVERNMENT-BACKED research claims that a switch to electric vehicles could inject a much-needed £24bn into the nation’s economy over the next five years. The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), a collaboration between the government and the UK’s car making industry, concluded that the transition from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to electrified powertrains could create a wealth of opportunities for British companies, The Times reported." on driving.co.uk: "The APC broke down the £24bn of potential market growth into three sections: £12bn in batteries; £10bn in “power electronics”; and £2bn in “electric machines”. Power electronics refers to devices that control electricity in a car, while electric machines manage the conversion of electricity into mechanical energy." https://www.driving.co.uk/news/business/transition-electric-cars-worth-24bn-says-report/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Richard S Wiggins Every time I tell people about my EV, they always tell me, “Yes, I would love to own an EV but, they are just to expensive,”. So what do you do. Rajeev Narayan In 2017 Hurricane Harvey disrupted gasoline supplies here in San Antonio, and I finally pulled the trigger on buying an EV with a Chevy Bolt. It's great fun to drive and reduce how much I spend on Gas. I was able to share this experience with a co-worker and gave her a ride in my car. She then bought a Chevy Bolt. Since then we have both bought plug-in hybrids, a Chevy Volt for me and a Prius Prime for her. We both drive about 80 miles a day between hospitals, clinics and dialysis units, and save about $6,000 a year on gas. Earlier this year we both also invested in community solar as well. It has been a source of satisfaction for me to have positively influenced her journey into EVs and green power. MARTIN YOUNG I was talking with a gentleman who is a strong advocate for increased oil drilling here in the U.S. I asked why he felt so strongly about that, and he said it was because he wanted our country to have greater energy independence and not have to rely on oil from countries who "don''t like us." I told him that my car (a 2016 Chevy Volt) rarely uses gas and that most of the time it runs on electricity. What I said next left him temporarily speechless. I said, "Richard, the thing about electricity is that it's 100% American made. We don't import it. We make it here. In fact, you can even make it yourself by putting some panels on your roof. That is true energy independence." After a pause, he simply said, "You're right." KARL CRAMER Took my little nieces in my in my plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. When the battery ran out and it switched to gas they said, "Oh no! We're polluting! The earth is getting ruined!" CITROËN Ë-SPACETOURER TO HIT MARKETS IN 2020 "PSA is accelerating its push into commercial electric vehicles as Citroën has now announced that it will also launch the compact van Spacetourer as a BEV – called the ë-SpaceTourer – by the end of the year." says electrive: "Peugeot will follow with the sister model Peugeot e-Traveller scheduled to hit the markets before the end of 2020. Both use the same technology with an electric motor of 100 kW, and there is a choice of two battery versions with 50 or 75 kWh. The latter enables a WLTP range of up to 330 kilometres. The third electric van in the group, the Opel Zafira Life, is announced for early 2021. Like its commercial vehicle counterparts Peugeot e-Expert, Citroën ë-Jumpy and Opel Vivaro-e, the Zafira Life also uses the well-known PSA drive. The individual leather seats in the second row can be turned, and a table can be folded out. The particularly strongly tinted rear windows are intended to provide the necessary privacy, for example, for chauffeur services and VIP shuttles." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/12/citroen-e-spacetourer-to-hit-markets-in-2020/ VOLKSWAGEN ROLLS OUT ID. TESLA POISED TO ROLL OUT SPEED LIMIT RECOGNITION AND ROUNDABOUT SUPPORT "Tesla is poised to improve its Autopilot functionality and its Full Self-Driving suite by rolling out speed limit recognition and roundabout support worldwide soon." says Teslarati: " Tesla hacker @greentheonly posted a tweet on the evening of June 11 describing the company’s intention to release the upcoming and highly-anticipated Autopilot improvements. It is unknown when the updates will roll out to Tesla owners, but the noted Tesla hacker indicated they would likely be coming soon, and that the features would be released worldwide. Tesla seems to be utilizing 3D-rendered icons for the upcoming features. This suggests that speed limit recognition may be integrated directly in the in-car displays of the company’s vehicles, similar to stop lights, stop signs, and other vehicles on the road." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-speed-limit-recognition-roundabout-support-worldwide-release-date/ RENAULT ENDS BATTERY LEASING IN SPAIN "Renault is slowly removing the option to lease the battery from its electric cars. First it was the UK, now it’s time to remove this option in Spain." reports PushEVs: "The battery of the new generation Renault ZOE is made with NCM 712 cells from LG Chem and the cost at the battery pack level is already below 100 euros per kWh. When compared to Clio, its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) counterpart, the ZOE looks extremely overpriced." Renault ZOE Life R110 with ZE 40 battery: 29.128 euros Renault Clio Life 53 kW: 10.267 euros Renault ZOE Zen R135 with ZE 50 battery: 32.888 euros Renault Clio Zen E-TECH (hybrid) 104 kW: 19.582 euros https://pushevs.com/2020/06/11/renault-ends-battery-leasing-in-spain/ ELECTRIC SHUTTLES TO START SERVICE IN SOUTH SACRAMENTO "The first of three new GreenPower EV Star shuttles will be put into service beginning Monday, 15 Jun 2020 as part of Electrify America’s more than $40 million Green Cities investments in Sacramento. The vehicles are being integrated into SacRT’s highly popular SmaRT Ride on-demand micro-shuttle program servicing the Franklin-South Sacramento communities." says Green Car Congress: "The GreenPower EV Star shuttles were assembled in Porterville, California and retrofitted with a unique side door configuration added to facilitate shuttle access for those with special needs. Electrify America fully subsidized the costs of the shuttles, the DC fast-charging infrastructure to support them, and the retrofit costs." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/06/20200612-sac.html DPD SWITZERLAND GETS ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH 680-KWH BATTERY "DPD has purchased a Volvo electric truck with unprecedented range to use in its operations in Switzerland. The France-based parcel carrier has bought a Futuricum truck, based on a model by Volvo and developed by Designwerk, which offers battery capacity of 680kwH and a range of up to 760km (472 miles)." reports eDelivery.net: "Supplied via green-generated energy in DPD’s depot, the vehicle saves around 96 kilograms of CO2 per 100km, corresponding to 76.8 tons per year. Work has begun on the vehicle, with delivery anticipated for mid-December 2020.While DPD makes wide use of electric vans for shorter last-mile trips, using battery-powered vehicles for long distances and large payloads has generally been difficult because the size of the battery required takes up significant space and weight within the vehicle." https://edelivery.net/2020/06/dpd-deploy-volvo-long-range-electric-truck-switzerland/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS Pete Glass Frankly if it can’t match the original 2012 Volt or Opel/Vauxhall Ampera’s 35miles or so, it’s completely pointless and the latest Kuga Phev or Prius Prime barely scrape past that. Now I hear of talk of 60miles plus from Merc [?], could be good for some people but only if they have home charging. Next generation Phevs must have rapid or at less semi-rapid charging [22kW] to be really worthwhile and now only the Mitsi Outlander does this. Now here I emphasise and rant … if you don’t have home charging then a low miles Phev really is utterly pointless, faffing about hunting for a public charger for a few miles Rich Fowler I find that the Clarity's 35-50 miles of range works pretty well for me for now, given where I live and how I use the car, but obviously, that's not going to work for everyone. Some people can get away with even less range than that, and some will want even more. Having less than 35 miles of range in the winter is annoying where I live, where things are a little spaced out and suburban. And it's just enough battery where I can get it fully charged up on a 120v 15A circuit overnight Tom James In response to QOTW regarding PHEV range, I think that once you have a range of between 30-40 miles on full electric, it renders PHEVs unnecessary, as most people’s daily driving will fit into this range bracket. So one might as well buy a full EV with the extra 100 or so miles of range for the rare occasion that one drives a longer distance. As an Outlander PHEV owner (which gets 30 miles EV range on a good day), it only took around 2 months of ownership to realise I wasn’t using any petrol day to day and was carrying around an engine and fuel tank for no reason. I have regretted not going for a BEV ever since, now I have to steal my wife’s Ioniq EV! Alan Northcutt, waco, tx USA answer: 0 miles because plug-in hybrids are a waste of resources now. they offer few e-miles, emit tailpipe and carbon pollution, require much maintenance, malfunction more frequently. with the growing charge network, they are unnecessary and only delay the transition to battery-electrics. analogous to natural gas, they are not a "bridge vehicle." and they only delay the transition to reach "net zero" emissions by 2050 (IPCC) Dan from Canada Ideal: 2 x your total daily commute, in a car with a heat pump - would allow for EV mode for 100% of local driving, including chores, even in winter. Use gasoline (hybrid mode) only for longer weekend/vacation drives. Good: 1.5 x your total daiy commute, no heat pump - allows for EV mode for all local driving, including chores, except on some winter days. Again, hybrid mode for longer drives. That’s our situation with our Hyundai Ioniq PHEV - “as EV as we can afford”. Marginal: 1 x your total daily commute - but may be actually good enough if you don’t need the car for chores or you can charge at work. Too low: less than your total daily commute, but may be good enough if you can charge at work. Rene Schneider The battery of the plug in hybrid car should cover the daily commute and you have to have the ability to charge at home (or at work), to make the driver happy. This means an absolute minimum of 50–60km standard battery range for a plug-in, better 80–100km (to cover for winter degrade). Otherwise the driver soon gets too lazy to plug in often enough and experience the joy of EV. Fast charge: What I most missed the last years was, to be able to „fast" charge my plug-in within less than an hour. Often it was not worthwhile to use a charger when you had an hour break somewhere. Strong EV motor: Key for the plug in is a strong enough EV motor (ours has 100kW). So to experience the joy of EV, and that the fossil gobbler has not to kick in regularly. Joe Maher I say a PHEV should have 80 to 100kms range. 24kwh battery should do it. I have the outlander and the 40does most days but maybe twice a week I have to do 80 to 100 in a day and I hate dipping into the tank. Mike H We bought a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid almost exactly 1 year ago. It's got a 16KWh battery (~12KWh useable) but is pretty heavy (~5000lbs). It's range is supposed to be about 52km, but I live in the mountains and my commute goes up a really big hill. Driving around in the city where it's flat, it'll go 60+km, but going to work and back (30km round trip) uses about 75% in the summer and 95% in the winter. In the year we've owned it, we've put just 5 tanks of gas (~250 litres) while doing almost 20,000km. It's insane how little gas we've used and on longer trips where there's charging available. In fact with cheap zero carbon hydro electricity here in BC and high gas prices, I figure we've saved about $1,800 in fuel! patdbean The average commute in the UK at least is about 38 miles , so a good hybrid range is 40 to 50 miles that way , as long as you can charge at home and at work that should be enough to keep "most" hybrids on electric "most" of the time. Bimi I think we should demand a minimum of 60km WLTP / real world range on hybrids. Having driven ev for 6 years now i see that more and more friends/people buy plugins and they like driving on EV mode so much that everywhere they go they will plug it in and charge it. This results in less charging spots available for those that really need it. Steven Bollinger Question of the week: If hybrid cars had enough all-electric range so that their owners NEVER burned any gasoline, that would be perfect, in my humble opinion. Paul F Enough range to do all city driving so 70ks would be perfect for a plug in hybrid. ICE cars are sort of economical at constant speed but they are very inefficient at start stop. Also it does not take much power to keep a car at speed but it takes a lot of energy to accelerate the Briggs and Stratton hybrid concept from 1980 proves that an air cooled lawnmower engine can keep a car moving alan baker On question of week, PHEV's should be able to do min 30 miles on battery to qualify for grant. Had a niro PHEV for about 18 mths and found that I could do the majority of my local journeys on the battery, but is was nice to have engine as a back up because the Charge points in rural Wales is very poor Cameron Hall 50 miles on the battery would probably be my minimum. Not that I would ever buy a hybrid car, way too many moving parts. LTK • 1 week ago I had a Ford PHEV with 21 mile EV range & got gas about once a month. I charged at home every night. I understand people with the Volt (42 EV Range) got gas about once every 3 months. I’d like a PHEV with 80-100 mile EV range & get gas about once a year - only for road trips and to keep the ICE parts working. Josh Pritt, Space Coast EV Drivers The 2nd generation Chevy Volt had a fairly perfect EV range of 52 miles. That seemed to cover all of our daily driving and still have miles left to run an extra unplanned errand or two. It even covers the weekend trips where we would go to the mall, movies, grocery store, visit parents and friends around town and still come home with 2 or 3 miles left on the battery. I would say any new plug in hybrid would have to have at least 52 miles range, otherwise they are starting out many years BEHIND a car that came out in 2015. Show #608 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 12th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ELECTRIFY CANADA PLANNING 20 NEW 350-KW CHARGING STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY "Volkswagen built Electrify America, its U.S. multi-brand-compatible network of EV charging stations, as part of a settlement with authorities there over its Dieselgate scandal. But now the automaker has voluntarily expanded that effort with a Canadian arm to give electric vehicle owners that same level of charging access." writes driving.ca: "Electrify Canada announced early October that it plans to open 20 350-kW-capable charging stations at Canadian Tire locations in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. Pricing is based on 75-kW-, 125-kW- and 350-kW-per-minute power levels. There is a $1 session fee per charge-up, but an Electrify Canada Pass+ is only $4 per month, which waives the session fee and knocks the cost down by roughly 20 cents per minute." https://driving.ca/volkswagen/auto-news/news/electrify-canada-planning-20-new-350-kw-charging-stations-across-the-country ALL-ELECTRIC RENAULT ZOE RS TO REPLACE CLIO RS? "With the standard Clio already upon us, you might be wondering when we’ll first see the next Renault Clio RS. As our sister title Auto Express discovered, it seems we won’t see one at all, but the French marque does have something else sporty up its sleeve" reports Evo Magazine: "Renault’s executive vice-president of product planning, Ali Kasai, told Auto Express that a new Clio RS is simply not viable, but that a performance-orientated, all-electric Zoe is the most likely model to sit in its place. Kasai said: ‘We need to be in line with the current trends; we have to invent the future sporty cars.’ The standard Zoe is powered by a 52kWh battery and a front-mounted 132bhp motor, and is good for a claimed range of 245 miles. A performance variant would naturally claim less range given the same battery size, especially if Renault punted for a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive set-up, something we’re yet to see in a compact EV." ARE EV SALES BEING HELD UP? From dinside.no: "Last week, we wrote that Kia in Spain has been revealed to refuse dealers to sell electric cars for the rest of 2019, with a strong call to sell gasoline and diesel-powered SUVs before replacing the calendar on January 1. Like the Norwegian importer , Kia also denied in Sweden that this was the case in our neighboring country. Now, however, the Swedish electric car website Recharge has revealed that Kia Sweden was not completely truthful. They also sent a similar letter to their dealers, should we believe the site. In the letter, Kia writes, among other things, that they "hope to have a fantastic start to the electrified year 2020", writes Recharge." Bertel O. Steen is a freelance importer: "We have no comment on the case in Sweden and Spain. But we do not have similar orders here in Norway, and we deliver the cars we get, explains Mette S. Sauge." In Norway, according to Kia Bil Norge, about 5700 are still on the reservation lists for the two electric cars for Kia. The lists distribute the numbers as follows: Kia e-Niro: about 4,400 people Kia e-Soul: about 1,300 people https://www.dinside.no/motor/avslort-i-sverige-ogsa/71686226 LEXUS EV CONCEPT TEASED AHEAD OF TOKYO MOTOR SHOW DEBUT "Toyota’s luxury division says the new zero-emissions showcar is a window into the company’s electric and autonomous future, so not only will the vehicle lack a combustion engine, but it also might not have a steering wheel." reports Motor1: "Originally announced back in July, the unnamed electric concept will allegedly feature a newly developed infotainment system with dual screens and is going to use a revamped version of the spindle grille. Chances are the EV rides on the new e-TNGA platform that Lexus’ parent company Toyota is developing, with the ultimate goal to have 10 electric cars from both brands on sale by the middle of the next decade." https://www.motor1.com/news/375558/lexus-ev-concept-teaser/ FREE PARKING FOR EV OWNERS IN CINCINNATI "Cincinnati, Ohio, has come up with a creative incentive for those who own electric vehicles: Free Parking. For those who have played Monopoly — well, the way I always played it — landing on the free parking square meant you got to cash in. Electric vehicle (EV) owners in Cincinnati will be able to cash in on savings thanks to the city’s Electric Car Incentive Program. Note that hybrid owners will not benefit from this incentive since the program is geared toward fully electric vehicles." writes Johnna for Clean Technica: "The free parking spots include all city parking meters and one city-owned garage located downtown. The parking in the garage is on a first-come, first-served basis and does not include overnight privileges. This also includes free parking at every and any parking meter within the Cincinnati city limits. Parking at these meters means drivers must still follow parking rules, though, and if the meter says you have an hour, then the driver needs to leave when that time is up." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/09/free-parking-for-ev-owners-in-cincinnati/ PAY-PER-MILE ‘ROAD TAX’ BACK ON THE AGENDA "The government’s Transport Committee has confirmed it wishes to start a debate around road pricing – more specifically the idea of a pay-as-you-go style system, that could fill a potential £40 billion black hole in its Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) income." says Leasing.com: "As the rise of the electric car accelerates over the coming years, the government will lose more and more money; EVs with list prices of less than £40,000 don’t pay any road tax at all, which will result in a sharp drop in tax income for the government. One way around this is to adjust the VED system with road pricing. Early next year, the Transport Committee will investigate whether national road pricing should be a part of that future, but wants the public – drivers and non-drivers alike – to begin the discussion now." https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/pay-per-mile-road-pricing-review-2020/ TOYOTA RAV4 PLUG-IN REVEALED AHEAD OF LA AUTO SHOW "Toyota teased on Thursday what will become the most powerful RAV4 yet – the 2021 RAV4 plug-in. Bringing with it a new color, Supersonic Red, the teaser image of the RAV4 plug-in highlights the new PHV’s surprising performance capabilities." according to Electric Cars Report: "Toyota will debut the Toyota RAV4-plugin during the Los Angeles Auto Show media days, on November 20, 2019 at the Toyota booth in South Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center." https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/10/toyota-rav4-plug-in-revealed-ahead-of-la-auto-show/ 2020 TOYOTA HYBRIDS AND EVS GET 10-YEAR, 150,000-MILE BATTERY WARRANTY "Toyota announced today that it will extend the battery warranty for its hybrid and electric vehicles to 10 years or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first), an increase from the current eight years or 100,000 miles. The change will affect 2020 hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles sold by Toyota and can transfer from the original owner to subsequent owners." says Car And Driver: "There are eight eligible cars in the lineup: the Camry, Corolla, Prius, RAV4, Avalon, and Highlander hybrids, plus the Prius Prime plug-in and the Mirai fuel-cell vehicle. Toyota says the longer warranty term is designed to help overcome the hesitation that some buyers feel toward purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle.Nissan has said that they expect Leaf batteries to last 10 to 12 years longer than customers will want to own the cars. Tesla is reportedly developing a battery technology that can last for a million miles." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a29428255/2020-toyota-hybrid-electric-car-batteries-warranty/ PLANS TO REDEVELOP FORMER A1 SERVICE STATION "Plans to redevelop a former service station on the A1 in Peterborough with electric car charging points and a café have been submitted to the city council." says the local newspaper Peterborough Today: "Solar Charging Ltd wants to revamp the former Abbotts Wood Service Station which lies near the southbound carriageway in Thornhaugh, near Wittering. Under its plans 20 electric car charging points would be installed, as well as a “service building” which would include a café. The electricity would come from a nearby solar farm - a process the company said would be “the first of its kind” within the region and would “seek to reflect the aspirations of Peterborough City Council’s Environment Capital agenda”." https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/plans-to-redevelop-former-a1-service-station-with-electric-car-charging-points-submitted-to-peterborough-council-1-9102744 LUNAZ DESIGN IS ELECTRIFYING CLASSIC CARS FOR A ZERO-CARBON FUTURE "Lunaz Design is converting high-end classic motor vehicles to electric propulsion utilising a team of engineers gathered from F1, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar, VW and McLaren and zero emissions and recycling at the heart of its product philosophy." says Renewable Energy Magazine: "The aim is to make the most beautiful and celebrated cars in history ready for an electrified, zero-carbon future. A 1961 eight-seat Rolls-Royce Phantom V, 1953 Jaguar XK120 and 1956 Rolls-Royce Cloud are currently being prepared for market introduction. The Jaguar XK120 is fitted with an 80-kWH electric battery pack whilst the Rolls-Royce Phantom V is specified with a 120-kWH power unit. Each classic by Lunaz represents an entirely custom restoration. Its cars are analysed to the millimetre to ensure Lunaz’s engineers develop the most appropriate powertrain solution for the character of the car and the intended driving dynamics. All classics by Lunaz are engineered with fast charging capability, regenerative braking systems and the sensitive integration of modern conveniences like traction control and cruise control." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/lunaz-design-is-electrifying-classic-cars-for-20191010 Moneyball @DKurac "Skywell delivers 1st batch of Shenzhen's largest #EV dump truck order so far as it delivers 300 of 1 K trucks to 2 co's in the city. Last year, Shenzhen started subsidizing #EV dump truck purchases with ¥800 K. The city wants to have all new dump trucks as EVs by 2021." TESLA MODEL 3 TAKES OVER THE UK WITH A RECORD QUARTER "Tesla had another record month and quarter of deliveries in the UK, thanks to Model 3, which is quickly becoming a best-selling car in the market. The ramp-up has been slow over the first few months, but Tesla delivered more than 2,000 Model 3 vehicles in August, and it was enough for the Model 3 to become the third best-selling car in the UK in August (via the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)." writes Fred for Electrek: "Now the registration data is out for September, and Tesla delivered even more vehicles: 3,459 units, including 2,864 Model 3 vehicles. It helped the electric car market rise to 2.2% of the overall car market in the UK. Diesel car sales dropped 20% during the period, and gasoline-powered cars increased by 4.5%. It brings Tesla’s delivery total for the quarter to 6,244 vehicles, including 5,385 Model 3 vehicles." https://electrek.co/2019/10/09/tesla-model-3-uk-record-quarter/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What segment of vehicles is the most important to electrify? Thank you to new PRODUCER RAJ BADWAL BMW LAUNCHES THE NEW X5 XDRIVE45E With the market launch of the new BMW X5 xDrive45e, the drive portfolio of the Sporty Activity Vehicle (SAV) is now being expanded to include a plug-hybrid system. The second generation of the BMW X5 with electrified drive combines a model-specific in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the very latest BMW eDrive technology. With an electrically powered range of 67 to 87 kilometres in the new WLTP test cycle. The combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission of the latest generation and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. In this way, the drive torque is transferred to all four wheels when driving on electric power alone as well as when using the combustion engine or indeed both drive units. Money-saving: Electric driving in urban areas is cheaper than using petrol or diesel if the plug-in hybrid vehicle is charged at home or at the workplace at low cost. Braking is winning: The battery is charged under braking. In conventional vehicles, braking generates only heat and brake dust. The best of both worlds: Plug-in hybrids provide electric driving pleasure in urban areas and classical BMW driving pleasure over longer distances. Better quality of life in cities: By driving on electric power, users can actively contribute to reducing emissions and traffic noise in cities. PEUGEOT 3008 HYBRID4 DETAILS ANNOUNCED "Peugeot has revealed details of its forthcoming plug-in hybrid - the 3008 GT Hybrid4 - which will feature a range of up to 36 miles on a single charge." reports Chris for Next Green Car:"The new SUV features a 13.2 kWh battery, powering two electric motors, which combine with a 200hp 1.6-litre petrol engine to produce 300hp (220kW). As such, the 0-60mph time is just 5.9 seconds, thanks in part to the all-wheel drive system and eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8738/peugeot-3008-hybrid4-details-announced/ TOYOTA RAV4 PLUG-IN HYBRID CAUGHT TESTING AND TOWING BY SPY PHOTOGRAPHERS "T add Toyota may be planning to soon add a plug-in hybrid version of the new RAV4. Spy photographers for our sister site, MotorAuthority, recently caught a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4 out testing on public roads overseas. The company has long been a laggard in the movement to sell plug-in vehicles. The only plug-in model it currently sells in the U.S. is the Prius Prime with 25 miles of electric range." according to Green Car Reports: "If the plug-in hybrid uses the same 8.8-kilowatt-hour battery as the Prius Prime, it would likely get far short of the Prius Prime's 25-mile electric range. Although there might be more packaging potential for fitting a larger battery under the floor of the tall crossover. The closest competitors to the RAV4 today are the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which has a 22-mile electric range, and the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid, which is rated at 26 miles." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124719_toyota-rav4-plug-in-hybrid-caught-testing-and-towing-by-spy-photographers TESLA ROLLS OUT KEY FOB SECURITY UPDATE FOR MODEL S TO ADDRESS RISKS OF CLONING "Last year, a Tesla Model S key fob was hacked by a team led by Lennert Wouters of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (KU Leuven). In the most recent example of their dedication to security, a Bug Bounty find from April this year is now being patched via an over-the-air (OTA) update in 2019.32. The security flaw enabled would-be car thieves to clone a fob in less than two seconds, after which the vehicle could be driven off. Tesla subsequently offered a multi-part fix: PIN to Drive, a software update, and a new fob." Says Teslarati. “We’ve begun to release an over-the-air software update (part of 2019.32) that addresses this researcher’s findings and allows certain Model S owners to update their key fobs inside their car in less than two minutes. We believe that neither of these options would be possible for any other automaker to release to existing owners, given our unique ability to roll out over-the-air updates that improve the functionality and security of our cars and key fobs,” Tesla said in a statement to Wired. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-key-fob-cloning-security-update-ota-software/ TESLA SECURES EXEMPTION FROM 10% CHINESE AUTO TAX AFTER MUSK'S VISIT "Tesla CEO Elon Musk just returned from a multi-day trip to China. According to Bloomberg, the CEO struck a deal that will make Tesla exempt from China's 10-percent automotive sales tax." according to sources at InsideEVs: "Traditionally, China's domestic automakers are able to get such a tax exemption, but foreign automakers haven't been so lucky. Essentially, moving forward, all Tesla vehicles sold in China will qualify for the exemption. It's important to note that the country's ministry has verified this information on its website, though Tesla has yet to comment on the situation. " https://insideevs.com/news/368080/tesla-exempt-china-10-percent-car-tax/ TESLA TO UNLOCK EXTRA RANGE AND FREE SUPERCHARGING FOR CARS IN HURRICANE DORIAN’S PATH "As gas stations in Florida ran out of fuel due to long lines of car owners rushing in to fill up their vehicles before Hurricane Dorian makes landfall, Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will offer free Supercharging services and unlock more range for vehicles that are on Dorian’s path. By doing so, Tesla will be able to provide some help to owners who are traveling to escape the upcoming storm." writes Simon at Teslarati: "Amidst Florida’s preparations, a number of gas stations across the state have started experiencing shortages as residents flocked to fill up their vehicles. Images and videos from social media show long lines of vehicles lining up to get gas, as well as stations running out of petrol to sell. Gas shortages have hit West Palm Beach the hardest, with 50% of the stations in the area running out of fuel as of 9 a.m. Friday." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-unlocks-free-supercharging-extra-range-hurricane-dorian/ PURCHASE OF 125 NEW ELECTRIC TAXIS WORTH OVER £7MILLION Sherbet London today announced the purchase of 125 new electric taxis from the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC). The first 50 cabs, all manufactured in the UK were delivered earlier in August, with the remaining 75 entering service in the next few months. This takes the size of Sherbet’s fleet up to 225 taxis, and is another step towards the aim of expanding its fleet to over 1,000 vehicles over the next three years. Show #535 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st July 2019. Thank you to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER PETE GORTON aka @GyroGordini with his BMW i3 60Ah. SOME STATES ARE SPENDING VW "DIESELGATE" MONEY ON MORE DIESEL "As part of Volkswagen’s punishment for getting caught cheating on emissions tests, it has made $3 billion in grants available for individual US states. The money is theoretically supposed to be used to reduce nitrogen oxide pollution from diesel engines, but state governments have broad discretion as to how to spend the money." reports InsideEVs: "Some states apparently hope to mitigate diesel pollution by buying newer (and yes, slightly cleaner) diesel engines. Missouri plans to spend over $3.5 million on diesel school buses, trucks and other vehicles. New Mexico is also investing in diesel and natural gas vehicles, and Arizona has earmarked $27.8 million for diesel projects. https://insideevs.com/news/360993/vw-dieselgate-money-funding-fossil-fuels/ VOLVO GROUP AND SAMSUNG SDI ENTER STRATEGIC ALLIANCE Volvo Group and Samsung SDI have entered into a strategic alliance to develop battery packs for Volvo Group’s electric trucks. Working together with Samsung SDI, Volvo Group aims to accelerate the speed of development and strengthen the long-term capabilities and assets within electromobility, to the benefit of customers in different truck segments and markets. The alliance will cover joint development of battery packs specifically developed for Volvo Group’s truck applications. Samsung SDI intends to provide battery cells and modules to meet the demand for the Volvo Group’s electric trucks. The intention is that Volvo Group will utilize Samsung SDI’s battery pack technology for assembly in Volvo Group’s manufacturing operations. https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/07/20190719-volvosdi.html NISSAN LEAF NOW AVAILABLE IN LATIN AMERICA’S BIGGEST MARKETS Nissan began selling the zero-emission Nissan LEAF in Latin America’s four biggest markets: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. The expansion into Latin America builds on Nissan’s position as the global pioneer in electric mobility, with more than 400,000 LEAF vehicles sold worldwide since the model first went on sale in 2010. A pre-sale stage for the LEAF began in the four Latin American markets at the end of 2018. Tesla just registered VIN 474,864 for the Model 3. CADILLAC ESCALADE EV SUV IS COMING WITH 400 MILES OF RANGE "According to Cadillac Society, the upcoming 5th generation of the Cadillac Escalade will be offered with three powertrain options, including an all-electric option." says InsideEVs: "The electric version will not be available right from the start in 2021, but will come at some point a bit later on. Anyways, the most important hint from unofficial sources is that expected range of Cadillac Escalade EV will be upwards of 400 miles (644 km), which when taking into consideration size and weight of the Escalade, suggests a huge battery pack. Currently, the only electric SUV on the U.S. market - Tesla Model X offers 325 miles (523 km) of range using 100 kWh battery. By the time the Cadillac Escalade EV will be ready, Tesla also could be at 400 miles. The other contender in the luxury, long-range, big SUV segment is Rivian with its R1S." https://insideevs.com/news/360965/cadillac-escalade-ev-400-miles-range/ ROYAL MAIL ROLLS OUT ANOTHER 190 ELECTRIC VANS "In London and the South East, Royal Mail is rolling another out 190 electric vans, which will join the 100 electric van fleet already operating in the area. Notable about this fleet is that they will be painted green, unlike the traditional red." says electrive.com: "The new fleet will be made up of a mix of Mercedes-Benz eVito and Peugeot Partner vans. This move will also approximately triple Royal Mail’s electric fleet. Charging for the new vehicles can be done overnight in “between six and eight hours”, which enables a range between 93 and 106 miles." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/20/royal-mail-rolls-out-another-190-electric-vans/ 2019 TOYOTA PRIUS PHEV ARRIVES WITH ONE EXTRA SEAT, TRIM UPGRADES "The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid has been revised for the 2019MY, adding some new gear and retaining the rest of the functions available in its predecessor." according to CarScoops: "The biggest news is the addition of an extra rear seat, raising capacity from 4 to 5 people on the rear bench. Toyota claims that the bench offers the same levels of comfort as before. Also new for the 2019 Prius PHEV is the Galaxy Black Metallic exterior color and optional 17’’ alloy wheels. Elsewhere, the Prius PHEV remains unchanged. It achieves up to 1.3 l/100 km (217.3 mpg UK / 180.9 mpg US) and emits 28 g/km of CO2. Electric range is up to 45 km (28 miles) in real-life conditions and in pure battery mode has a top speed of 135 km/h (84 mph)." QUESTION OF THE WEEK DON WOOD on Facebook On the July 14th, 2019 podcast you asked for opinions on whether electric vehicle manufacturers should have exclusive charging stations or be open to all types of electric vehicles. Since Tesla is investing a lot of capital to create their vast charging network in the US as one of many features offered to Tesla owners, it is a very important and valuable feature of owning a Tesla and paying a premium price for an electric vehicle. If open to other types of EVs I would expect they should charge a premium additional tax for non-Tesla vehicles to discourage the Super Charging Stations from becoming clogged up with non-Tesla vehicles. In an emergency, they could use it, knowing they are paying way more than they want to, but otherwise would charge at other types of charging stations, such as at a Sheets station, etc. Most current GAS stations should be installing generic charging outlets and become "Energy Stations" dropping the word "GAS" from the name over time. These could then service all types of EVs, including Tesla and Non-Tesla vehicles. Adapters provided... ROB CRAWFORD When Tesla came out with Model S, there were no chargers of any kind. A year later, Elon was building chargers everywhere, from the USA to Europe, Canada, and to even China eventually. Elon knew he had to have nearly as many charging stations as possible not really knowing what the response to the S, would be. Besides he was covering his own arse, and then the model S started to roll out, nearly half of those chargers we're in place with many more on the way, and still to this day, newer and better charging is going up. Yes, all charging stations should be open to all models. There are cars like Byton coming to Europe and the States, very soon, and there is no word on if they're going to have their own charging? So definitely Yes, all stations should have nozzles for all makes, brands of EVs, it just makes reasonable sense to do so. DUNCAN ARMOUR When the charger network was appalling and inadequate, Tesla saw the need for good charging infrastructure, and provided superb infrastructure at a point where realistically it couldn’t afford to do so. Tesla’s courageous calculated risk-taking and use of hard-won debt should not be piggy-backed by all those legacy car companies that saw the same initial problem, and did nothing about it. DOUG VOWLES Manufacturers are free to do what they want with their investments, but I would hope that at this point in the process of getting wide public buy-in of electric vehicles they would put their energies into charging assets available to everyone. Preferably through an industry-wide program using the same standards. How be they donate $25 (or more) for every electric car sold, to something like Electrify America? But walled gardens brings up another option. Rather than by brand, just put up a pay-wall. Similar to the VIP lounges at airports. Pay an extra fee when charging for access to air-conditioning, showers, complimentary soft-drinks etc. Freebie points/tickets could be given to customers when they go back to the lonely dealers once a year for tire rotations, wiper replacements, and perhaps a battery health checkup. JACK OAKLEY Government financial support will only go so far. If there is a business opportunity for charging stations, opened to the public or private charging clubs, or private manufacture charging spots - I welcome the charger expansion worldwide. I would be happy to be part of the expanding community and would possibly base a purchase on charging stations available to my vehicle. I have a MAJOR thorn in my side about TESLA's current model. I do not agree government funds should be used to promote private charging. As with TESLA. With my i3, I cannot use a TESLA charger, but I am frequently ICE'd by Tesla's elite blocking (not Charging) stations I need to use. TESLA owners should not be entitled to public funds while the charging stations remain private. They are welcome to their private stations - should not be funded indirectly with my tax dollars SACHA I've heard this question a lot a lot and while it's tempting to compare charging networks to gas stations, private networks are in fact private investments made by a manufacturer and ultimately paid for by its investors and customers (in the case of Tesla , the network was built because other manufacturers weren't participating in the EV market - some, like GM, actively worked to undermine the EV market - check out the EV1 story and how GM and the oil industry actively worked to roll back California regulation on EVs) . Causing charger congestion for people that paid for the network in exchange for tiny profit would be a bit of a problem I would think . Awesome question of the week ! Glad you raised this as it's a frequent criticism of TSLA, I think they deserve credit for having the fortitude to create their own network when nobody else was willing to consider EVs seriously , what do you think ? BARRY WOLF Fine with me. If I had a fossil gobbler that, by requirement of the manufacturer, only gobbled super special fossils (and had a special fossil gobbling fuel inlet), required me to visit special fueling stations, and I willingly purchased said car, I would visit the special fossil gobbler station. It would be nice, of course, if the manufacturer made an adapter to use with other fossil dispensing stations, too, but with the caveat that without super special fossils (super slippery), it is not possible to refill the car as quickly. Ok, back to EVs. I think it's ok since Tesla pays for the network and manages it and Tesla owners do pay a premium for this network. I drive a cheap VW e-Golf ($22,500 after taxes), so I don't expect such special treatment by VW or anyone else. RAY HOJKA In answer to your question of the week I think all the networks should be open to all. I know they have invested heavily so I have no issues with them charging a reasonable rate which gives them a sensible profit. In Tesla's case I don't understand why they don't do that given that they have rarely made a profit yet. Also I have watched a number of Tesla owner videos on YouTube and I have yet to see them charging on a "fully in use" bank of superchargers so why not open up the system. I think it would only need a firmware update to the charger to allow it to detect whether it's a Tesla or another make and switch into the appropriate mode. Thanks for the great podcast. I am a new owner of a Hyundai ioniq ev and loving it. DAVID ALLEN It bears mentioning that Tesla took the initial step of addressing the “chicken or egg” problem by building its own charging network (at considerable expense). But later, they were willing to license their tech patents (for free), and offered other car makers access to their network, IF they were willing to help pay for its expansion and maintenance. Everyone said “pass” and chose to let other third party companies build the public network (except Nissan who made CHAdeMO available at SOME of their dealerships). The ability for cars with different plug designs to use an “incompatible” plug is a solvable engineering problem, but adds the burden/expense of the driver having to carry multiple adapters. Whether this will happen becomes an economic, customer service and standards problem. The various companies can work out the economics/customer service issue, but the government(s) will have to step in and establish interoperability standards and regulations. MATTHEW COOPER TLDR: Let people do business freely. We have to remember that OEM does not have to go above and beyond and create a charging network, there are dedicated businesses for that purpose. If they do create a network I think they should be allowed to wall it off not to block their own car owners from chargers. TOM RAFTERY There’s absolutely no reason to have walked gardens - everybody loses. Consumers have fewer places they can charge from, and charging companies make less money by making it harder for people to give them money. Ridiculous. Think of it this way, back in the days when we were putting Dino juice into our cars, we could buy fossil fuels in any service station. There’s no reason for EVs to be any different (in this respect, at least!). ANDREW JACOBS I will be very surprised that anyone says that there should be walled gardens. A major standard should and hopefully will emerge that all charger manufacturers will use. While the Tesla model is very convenient for Tesla owners, and I can understand why Tesla drivers would be keen for the Tesla chargers to stay exclusive to them. It doesn’t help the adoption of EVS if there are lots of different charging plugs and standards. Imagine how good it would be if all electric cars could access the Tesla super charger network. After all, Teslas can connect to any network with all the adapters they have available. Anyone want to develop a Tesla super charger to Chademo adapter for my Leaf? I’m happy to pay Tesla for the privilege. JOHN LACEY I think that all charging networks should be opened up to everyone including the Tesla Supercharger network (saying that even as a Tesla owner), in the ethos of helping the rapid global growth of sustainable transport. However, non-Tesla's should be pay a higher price when using the Tesla Superchargers, the reason being that when you buy a Tesla you are partly funding the build costs of the Supercharger network, so it wouldn't be fair on Tesla owners if others simply got to use the network without chipping in themselves. I would then expect Tesla to use those additional funds to build even more Superchargers, thus benefiting Tesla owners with a greater number of chargers across the network. The only issue I can see is that the majority of non-Tesla's have a slower charging speed, thus will 'clog up' the chargers, so perhaps a 30 min max time limit to be imposed in busy periods? There was so much fail this week, cadets, that even a space whale is inadequate to convey the amount. Oh sure, Apple did pretty well -- but IDC and other analysts, Facebook, GT Advanced, Samsung, Qualcomm's caving (as it turns out), the FCC investigating carriers for selling your location data, the death of two Right to Repair bills, the just-plain-death of Anki, Adobe's attempt to pull a fast one -- and that's not even all of it! This week we're calling it all just "What the Fail?" because of the initials. It wasn't all bad, of course -- apart from losing a bunch of senior designers in something of a cluster, it was a pretty good week to be Apple. Wall Street liked what it heard (though they're misinterpreting and/or oversimplifying things as usual), but there really is a lot to be happy about now and hopeful about later. There was a weird story speculating about mouse support for the iPad Pro (doubtful), but also CarPlay in the Prius Prime, some news (good or bad, depending on how you look at it) about macOS 10.15, an AirPower knock-off that does 90 percent of the job, a new USB-C hub for your 2018 iPad Pros, and some promising news about the return of some classic iOS games. Mike and Charles also examining the saga of the "parental control" apps and Apple's response (with blame to go around), piece together the confusing meaning of "5G" versus "mmWave" (which is part of, but not all of, 5G), lament Bloomberg's lasting damage to SuperMicro (a US company, incidentally) and tell Tales of the Tech Bench. They also discuss the American phenomenon of bumper stickers, fixing cars in automotive parts store car parks, and they spot the silliest Dodge Dart in America.

I.C.E. mpgs keep improving; EV batteries are lasting longer; And even fuel cells are still in the mix. If all this is true, then why are companies like Delphi banking on something called a 48-volt, mild hybrid as the next big thing to power your car? Well one reason could be because experts see sales of over 12-million of these mild hybrids in consumer cars by 2025.
