The EV Juke will run alongside a continuing petrol version due to uncertainty around EV adoption, and is expected to offer up to 622 km (386 miles) of WLTP range with the larger 75.1 kWh battery option, though official specs have not yet been confirmed.***EUROPE EV SALES HIT MARCH RECORDEuropean BEV and plug-in hybrid registrations hit a monthly all-time high of nearly 540,000 units in March 2026, up 37% year-on-year, driven partly by sharp fuel price rises following the disruption of shipping routes at the start of the Iran war in late February. Global EV registrations also rose 3% to over 1.7 million in March, though China bucked the trend with a 14% fall in BEV sales after the end of purchase tax exemptions and trade-in subsidies.***KIA CONFIRMS EV1 FOR 2027Kia has confirmed a 2027 launch for its most affordable EV yet, expected to wear the EV1 badge, targeting the segment occupied by the BYD Dolphin and Renault 5 EV with European pricing expected around €25,000 (~£21,200). The government has also set targets for Renault and Stellantis to produce 400,000 electric cars per year by 2027 and one million by 2030, alongside a new 50,000-contract programme for high-mileage middle-income workers such as carers and nurses.***FRANCE TIES ELECTRIFICATION TO ENERGY SECURITYFrance has become the first country to announce a major national electrification package directly in response to the Strait of Hormuz energy crisis, doubling annual state support from €5.5 billion to €10 billion through 2030 and targeting fossil dependence in both transport and heating. The plan includes banning gas heating in new buildings from late 2026 or 2027, subsidising 50,000 EVs for high-mileage drivers, offering businesses up to €100,000 per electric truck or van, and building 1 million domestically manufactured heat pumps per year by 2030.***US SOLAR SURGE DEEPENS COAL DECLINEThe US Energy Information Administration forecast on 6 April that solar energy generation will rise 17% this summer compared to 2025 levels, with solar projected to grow from 293 billion kWh in 2025 to 415 billion kWh in 2027, while coal generation is expected to fall roughly 10% in the first half of 2026. Over 90% of net new US generating capacity in 2026 is forecast to come from solar, wind, and battery storage, though rising solar shares are already exposing grids to sharper afternoon price swings and driving increased investment in battery storage alongside new capacity.***VOLVO TRUCKS PUSHES ELECTRIC HEAVY HAULAGE FURTHERVolvo Trucks has launched the FH Aero Electric with up to 700 km of range, 460 kW output, MCS charging at 700 kW (20–80% in around 50 minutes), and support for gross combination weights of up to 48 tonnes, directly targeting the range and payload objections that have held back heavy electric freight. Alongside it, updated FH, FM, and FMX Electric models for regional and construction work offer up to 470 km range, a new dual-motor driveline producing up to 540 kW, and an integrated gearbox PTO capable of driving equipment such as concrete mixers and cranes, with market rollout beginning in phases from 2026.

Prémiový výrobca áut nám ponúkol na test jazdený model EQS SUV s nájazdom 70-tisíc kilometrov. Zaujímal nás najmä stav auta a batérie po diagnostike. Že bude kapacity ešte viac ako v čase výroby sme ale nečakali. Tri roky a 70-tisíc najazdených kilometrov sú dosť dlhá doba a vzdialenosť na to, aby sa začali prejavovať nedostatky aj luxusného vozidla. Napríklad môžu vznikať vôle na nápravách, začínajú sa ozývať tyčky stabilizátora alebo silentbloky, karoséria začne strácať tuhosť a pri výjazde na obrubník vŕzga, môže sa spomaľovať infotainment alebo už nedisponovať pôvodnými funkciami z dôvodu vypršania prvých licencií. Mnohé automobily, najmä tie s koženými a plastovými interiérmi, zasa začínajú práve po troch rokoch aktívnej prevádzky vykazovať prvé materiálové nedostatky, vŕzgať či prichádzať o svoju pôvodnú povrchovú textúru.V prípade elektromobilov sa pridáva ďalšia a oprávnená obava o trakčný akumulátor. Na internete nájdete tisícky a tisícky vyjadrení, že po pár rokoch majú tak zdegradované batérie, že sa prakticky nedajú využívať a auto patrí čoskoro do šrotu. To nám medzičasom vyvrátil technologický novinár René Hubinský v podcaste Autobazar.EU.Mercedes-Benz však nie je automobilka, ktorá by ponúkala práve lacné a prvoplánové riešenia. Trakčné akumulátory sa od čias elektrickej B250e výrazne modernizovali, a tak napríklad nami testovaná EQS SUV disponuje vysokonapäťovou batériou s kapacitou až 282 Ah (108 kWh) s 10-ročnou zárukou. Zaujímavosťou je, že Mercedes-Benz v porovnaní s ostatnými výrobcami zákazníka nelimituje počtom rýchlonabíjaní. Automobilka dôveruje svojej technológii natoľko, že zákazníka nemusí obmedzovať a umožňuje mu využívať vozidlo tak, ako to skutočne potrebuje, vrátane nabíjania.Nami testovaný Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV s rokom výroby 2023 patrí už do druhej polovice produkčného roka, a tak má mierne výkonnejší akumulátor ako rovnaký model starší o niekoľko mesiacov.Videotest: Jazdený Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV po 70.000 kmVýchodiskový stavPohľad na špecifikáciu testovaného vozidla vyvoláva nadšenie. Vozidlo za bezmála 200-tisíc eur má azda všetko, čo čakáte od superluxusného vozidla. Sú tu masážne, ventilované a vyhrievané sedadlá, všetky elektronicky polohovateľné, auto má zrejme najvyspelejší automobilový infotainment sveta s naozaj funkčným hlasovým asistentom a vysokým apelom na funkčnú estetiku, tri obrazové plochy vzadu, opulentné priestorové pomery, no aj najvyššiu možná bezpečnosť pre posádku. Napríklad o číslo menší model EQE SUV získal v testoch EuroNCAP najvyššie možné hodnotenie bezpečnosti, zodpovedúci výsledok sa pripisuje aj väčšiemu EQS SUV.A potom tie jazdné vlastnosti, ktoré nemožno nazvať inak ako úchvatnými. EQS 580 4MATIC SUV s maximálnym výkonom závratných 400 kW (544 koní) a krútiacim momentom až 858 Nm môže konkurovať najlepším športovým SUV na trhu.A predsa dokáže jazdiť nevídane sofistikovane, komfortne, ticho a hladko ako guľa. Ak si ako vodič vyberiete komfortný jazdný režim a úplne vypnete rekuperáciu (pravou páčkou plus za volantom), je to skoro akoby ste jazdili Rolls-Royce. A taký dojem budú mať pasažieri vzadu.Testovaný model disponoval pohonom, ale aj natáčaním všetkých kolies - zadné sa natáčajú štandardne o 4,5°, v testovanej verzii až 10°. Vďaka tomu je pri nízkych rýchlostiach v meste a pri parkovaní toto veľké SUV nadmieru obratné, podstatne uľahčuje parkovanie a zmenšuje priemer otáčania až o jeden meter na 11 metrov. Bez aktívneho riadenia zadných kolies by SUV s týmto rázvorom mohlo mať priemer otáčania aj viac ako 13 metrov.Po 3 rokoch a 70 000 kmPri aute tejto kategórie a cenovej relácie prirodzene očakávame, že po troch rokoch od výroby a viac ako dvoch rokoch aktívneho jazdenia (celkom 70 000 km) nebude vykazovať takmer žiadne známky používania. Auto si síce nevyberá svojho majiteľa, a ten môže byť nedbalý. Preto musia byť všetky materiály použité pri výrobe odolné, trvácne, bezpečné.V testovanom EQS SUV sme si všimli mierne praskanie plastových dielov v interiéri, čo bol ešte pred pár rokmi často kritizovaný nedostatok interiérov značky. Dnes ho považujeme za vyriešený, ale táto EQS SUV sa s ním ešte stretávala. Je na mieste položiť si dve otázky: je pre nás vôbec dôležité, či bežne nekontaktné plochy po stlačení vrźgajú? A je toto nedostatok odpustiteľný pri aute s hodnotou takmer dvestotisíc eur? Odpovedzte si sami.Keď sme si prvý raz sadli do jazdeného EQS SUV, skutočne sme nepostrehli významnejší nedostatok, ktorý by nasvedčoval o strate pôvodných vlastností. Kontaktné plochy, ako volant, madlá dverí, sedadlá, lakťová opierka a páky za volantom, to všetko vyzeralo v podstate ako nové. Nepochybne automobilka vozidlo na náš test pripravila, ale detailing nezakryje väčšie materiálové nedostatky.Dôsledne sme kontrolovali celé vozidlo zvnútra a jediné miesto, ktoré trochu poukazovalo na predchádzajúce používanie, bola nadobudnutá patina kože napa na sedadle vodiča. Mnohí by si boli pomysleli, že to takto bolo už od výroby.Jeden príznak opotrebovania sme ale predsa len našli. Skrytý a nenápadný, skoro nepodstatný - poškodený prešívaný okraj podlahového koberčeka, evidentne poškodený každodenným kontaktom s podrážkami. Samotný povrch koberčeka však bol bez akýchkoľvek známok používania.Rýchlosť infotainmentu bola podľa nášho subjektívneho dojmu totožná s úplne novým Mercedesom. Naviac, fungovali tu všetky tie softvérové doplnky, ako hlasové ovládanie (v anglickom jazyku) aktivované povelom Hej, Mercedes. Hlasová asistentka vám nastaví klimatizáciu, nastaví cieľ v navigácii, zavolá na kontakt z vášho mobilu, otvorí kufrové dvere, strešné okno alebo pravé zadné okno - stačí o to požiadať. Dokonca vám povie vtip o BMW, ak si to želáte.Bezproblémové sa ukázalo aj prepojenie s mobilným telefónom cez apku Mercedes-Benz. S ňou viete ovládať funkcie vozidla na diaľku, napríklad si nastaviť časy odjazdu pre včasné vyhrievanie alebo vychladenie auta, naplánovať si trasu s nabíjacími zastávkami alebo kontrolovať servisné intervaly aj bez zapnutia auta.Ako vyzerá batéria elektromobilu po 3 rokoch?Najčastejší mýtus o elektromobiloch sa týka skorej degradácie ich akumulátorov. Tento mýtus je ale postavený na reálnych základoch, pretože komerčné elektromobily prvej generácie skutočne medzičasom prišli o takú kapacitu batérií, že sú v praxi málo využiteľné, typickým príkladom je prvá generácia Nissanu Leaf.Dnes je všetko inak, automobilky investovali miliardy eur do vývoja akumulátorov, spojili sa s autoritami v danej oblasti a trhu ponúkli podstatnejšie kvalitnejšie produkty.Možno sa pýtate, ako k tomu prídu tí prví majitelia, ktorí priskoro prišli o hodnotu svojich áut? Tu ale nachádzame súvislosť s technologickými inováciami a ochotou do nich investovať takzvanými early adopters. Tí sú ochotní akceptovať riziká, ako to bolo aj pri prvých skladacích telefónoch s ohybnými displejmi. Zatiaľ čo prvé Galaxy ZFold majú dnes všetky popraskané displeje, aktuálny Galaxy Z Fold7 je výnimočne odolným zariadením.Jazdený Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV prešiel testom kapacity batérie 16. januára 2026, teda iba niekoľko dní pred naším testom. Skúšky boli vykonané cez bratislavský XENTRY. Výsledky sú mimoriadne zaujímavé, najprv nás zarazili.Auto sa na diagnostiku dostavilo so stavom nabitia 79,20 percenta. Report z diagnostiky uvádza, že maximálny počet spínacích cyklov stykačov je 500 000 to - predstavuje mechanickú životnosť fyzických kontaktov, teda koľkokrát dokážu bezpečne zapnúť a vypnúť obvod predtým, než sa opotrebujú.HVB 1 a HVB 2 sú hlavné stykače navrhnuté tak, aby izolovali celú vysokonapäťovú batériu od zvyšku vozidla, keď je vypnuté alebo v prípade nehody.DCB sa aktivuje len vtedy, keď auto pripojíte k rýchlonabíjačke. Musí zvládať obrovské prúdy (často stovky ampérov), preto je konštrukčne veľmi robustný.OBC je stykač pre palubnú nabíjačku, používa sa pri pomalom nabíjaní. Keďže výkony sú tu nižšie (typicky 3,7 kW až 22 kW), býva tento stykač subtílnejší než DCB.Po troch rokoch od výroby auta boli tieto stykače využité najviac 3 636x, pričom palubný len 113x a rýchlonabíjací stykač iba 1 585x. Ostáva teda viac ako 498-tisíc nabíjacích cyklov.Podľa testu elektrický systém umožňuje max. prietok energie až 247,12 kWh.Najviac nás zaujímala reálna kapacita batérie. Zatiaľ čo podľa výrobných údajov malo byť 100% 282,00 Ah, po 3 rokoch od výroby a po prejdení 68 813 km mala reálna nameraná kapacita batérie 282,17 Ah. To znamená 100,1%. Confieso que soy un fan del sistema de 4 ruedas directrices, que me parece una solución muy interesante para coches muy diferentes. Y te preguntarás: “Y entonces, ¿por qué no se usa más?” y mi respuesta es que usa en más coches de los que piensas… Un video muy completo con historia, actualidad y técnica en nuestra “Pizarra hermética”. Y vamos ya con el tema comenzando por la técnica, para explicar a aquellos que no lo sepan, porque me consta que muchos ya lo sabéis, cómo funciona la dirección a las cuatro ruedas. La dirección a las cuatro ruedas funciona de modo diferente a baja y alta velocidad. A baja velocidad las ruedas posteriores giran en sentido opuesto a las delanteras, para mejorar el radio de giro mientras que a alta velocidad giran, no demasiado, en el mismo sentido que las anteriores, un efecto que en otros coches se consigue con suspensiones multibrazo. Todo esto te lo contamos con nuestra “Pizarra Hermética”: He confeccionado una lista con coches de dirección total que me parecen interesantes, comenzando por los pioneros y terminando con coches muy actuales, muchos de los cuales podríais comprar hoy mismo. Stoewer R180 (1936). Hablamos de la desaparecida marca Stoewer, pero este mismo coche se produjo con la denominación BMW325, Hanomag Type 20B y el citado Stoewer R180 y también el R200. Mercedes-Benz 170 VL (1936). En los mimos años Mercedes ofreció un modelo similar, con motor de 1,7 litros y 36 CV que permitían una velocidad máxima de nada menos que 82 km/h… quizás algo optimista. Nissan Skyline R31 (1985). Los japoneses han sido probablemente los primeros en utilizar estos sistemas en coches de series digamos, importantes. La serie Skyline de Nissan es mítica, pero el R31 aparecido en 1985 suponía un paso importante respecto al R30. Honda Prelude (1988). Hablamos obviamente del modelo de la tercera generación, la que va de 1988 a 1991 y en la que debutó el sistema 4WS de “Four Wheel Steering” o dirección a las cuatro ruedas. Lo curioso de este sistema era que resultaba muy sencillo porque era totalmente mecánico. Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 (1990). Muchas veces hablo de este coche, a menudo olvidado, y es que era un total compendio de tecnología, con motor V6 de 3 litros, 24 válvulas, dos turbos, 280 CV, aerodinámica activa, suspensión adaptativa, escape con control electrónico, tracción total y dirección total. Mazda MX6 (1991). En este caso hablamos de la segunda generación, la que va desde 1991 a 1997 y que monto un sistema, en este caso electrónico, de dirección a las cuatro ruedas en su modelo más alto de gama, con motor 2.5 V6 de 165 CV. Toyota Mega Cruiser (1995). Dado su tamaño, claramente más de 5 metros, y peso, casi 3 toneladas, se le instalo un sistema de dirección total que solo funcionaba a baja velocidad para mejorar la maniobrabilidad… Renault Laguna 4Control (2007). Me resulta curioso de este sistema que es nada menos que hasta los 60 km/h cuando las ruedas giran en sentido opuesto a las delanteras… eso sí, gracias a la gestión electrónica, menos cuando más alta es la velocidad… a partir de esa velocidad, giran unos grados en el mismo sentido que las delanteras. BMW Serie 7 (2009). Hablamos de la 5ª generación que llegó a España de 2009 y que ofrecía como opción en gran parte de su gama este sistema de dirección total. Este sistema con una muy buena gestión electrónica tiene en cuenta muchos parámetros para elegir hacia dónde y qué número de grados gira las ruedas traseras. Ahora, simplemente os paso un listado con algunos de los modelos que usan este sistema… insisto, es una lista que no es exhaustiva, pero si bastante completa: -Audi A6 (2018) -Audi A8 (2019) -Audi Q7 (2020) -BMW Serie 5 (2018) -BMW Serie 7 (2019) -BMW Serie 8 (2023) -Ferrari GTC4 Lusso (2019) -Hyundai Genesis HTRAC (2015) -Lamborghini Aventador S (2018) -Lamborghini Urus (2018) -Mercedes-Benz EQS (2023) -Mercedes-Benz Clase S (2023) -Porsche 911 (2018) -Porsche Cayenne (2018) -Porsche Panamera (2023) -Renault Megane RS (2021) -Renault Talisman (2018) -Renault Espace (2018) -Volkswagen Touareg (2020) “Monstruo” del día. Ni coche ni camión ni ningún trasto más o menos normal… el vehículo del día es un “Monster Truck”, cualquiera me vale, un ejemplo de como la dirección a las cuatro ruedas permite una maniobrabilidad sorprendente para cacharros de semejante envergadura… Ver moverse a estos monstruos en sitios tan estrechos es impresionante… y solo posible gracias a la dirección total.

It's hatchback mania at the Unnamed Automotive Podcast—but these practical five-doors are more than a bit unusual. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle. This year the recently launched Kia EV6 compact SUV and Mercedes-Benz EQS large premium car were two battery-electric vehicles that topped their respective segments. But the vast majority of segment leaders in emotional appeal are conventional gasoline-powered cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. The Jeep Wagoneer UV, Jeep Grand Wagoneer premium SUV, Kia Carnival minivan, and Hyundai Santa Cruz midsize pickup were newcomers to the market that top their segments. Consumer excitement with their vehicles actually fell this year, breaking a streak of increases that dates back to 2014. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius became CEO in 2019 but has been working for Mercedes since 1993 in almost every part of the company. During that period, Mercedes spent time getting a lot bigger; the company famously merged with Chrysler for a time, forming a giant called DaimlerChrysler. But, over the past few years, it's actually been getting much smaller and more focused. The Chrysler deal was undone and, just recently, Ola spun off the truck division into its own public company called Daimler Truck, leaving Mercedes-Benz to stand alone as a premium car brand. Car companies are either consolidating into giant conglomerates like Stellantis or shrinking and focusing like Mercedes. A lot of that is driven by the huge shift to electric vehicles and then, on top of that, to cars essentially becoming rolling computers. You'll hear Ola refer to cars as “digital products” a lot — and to Mercedes itself as a tech company. (Actually, he says it's a luxury and tech company.) Mercedes now has two new EVs, the EQS and the EQE, both of which have massive infotainment screens running Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system, which even has its own voice assistant called Hey Mercedes. I had to ask Ola about Apple's recent announcement that the next version of CarPlay would be able to take over every display in the car, including the instrument cluster. GERMANY'S PLUGIN EV SHARE UP TO 24.3% Germany, Europe's largest auto market, saw plugin electric vehicles take 24.3% share in April 2022, up from 22.1% YoY. Overall auto volume was down, by over 21% YoY, and over 40% compared to pre-pandemic seasonal norms. April's combined plugin result comprised 12.3% battery electrics (BEVs), and 12.0% plugin hybrids (PHEVs). Combustion-only powertrains faired worst in terms of volume drop, with diesel sales down almost 30% YoY, and petrol down almost 28%. With current BEV market leader Tesla not having any large scheduled deliveries in April, other marques and models had a chance to shine, with the Fiat 500e coming out on top. The Mercedes EQB stepped up in registered volume by some 5× over the period, seeing a healthy 1,405 units over the February to April period, from 295 previously. The BMW i4 increased 2.7× to 755 units. IONIQ5 NAMED WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR A jury of 102 distinguished international automotive journalists from 33 countries selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work. A triple win for the Hyundai Motor Company when the winners were announced live at the New York International Auto Show. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was declared the 2022 World Car of the Year, as well as the 2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year and the 2022 World Car Design of the Year award winner. For World Car of the Year, the jury selected IONIQ 5 from an initial entry list of 28 vehicles, then from three finalists. The 2022 Top Three in the World finalists are the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6. For World Electric Vehicle of the Year, the jury selected IONIQ 5 from an initial entry list of 11 vehicles, then from three finalists. The 2022 Top Three in the World finalists are the Audi e-tron GT, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Mercedes-Benz EQS. For World Car Design of the Year, a design panel consisting of six highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate. Top Three in the World finalists for the design award are the Audi e-tron GT, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6. Luxury Car - The MERCEDES-BENZ EQS was chosen from an initial entry list of eight vehicles from all over the world then a short list of three finalists as announced on March 15th. HYUNDAI TO BUILD NEW U.S. EV & BATTERY ASSEMBLY PLANT Hyundai Motor Co. will build an assembly plant in the U.S. for electric vehicles and batteries, COO Jose Muñoz said Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show. The new plant is part of Hyundai Motor Group's $7.4 billion investment plan for the U.S. to produce EVs, upgrade factories and develop smart mobility technologies. The company hopes to choose a location for the dedicated EV plant this year, Muñoz said. The hybrid Santa Fe will be the company's first electrified model assembled in the U.S. when it goes into production in October. That's at the Montgomery, Alabama plant. The first car has been reserved by William Bridge, CEO of sustainability NGO Global Green USA, whose star-studded honorary board includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Yoko Ono and Robert Redford. - Prototypes are being tested ahead of a planned start to production in mid-2023, with crash testing currently under way. Indi EV will build the car in the US, with several sites reportedly under consideration. - The base-model One, with a 75kWh battery and an estimated 230-mile range, will retail at $45,000 (about £34,000). A $69,000 (£52,000) premium model gets a 95kWh pack and 300 miles of range. The proposal also calls for zero-emissions sales to account for 68% of total sales by 2030. - The board is expected to vote on the proposal in August. VOLKSWAGEN AND FORD EXPAND COLLABORATION ON MEB ELECTRIC PLATFORM - Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group are expanding their e-mobility partnership. Ford plans to produce another electric model for the European market based on the MEB platform - The automaker will also double its planned MEB volume to 1.2 million units over a six-year timeframe. - The first Ford model to use the MEB will be an all-electric crossover. It is expected to roll off the assembly line at the Ford Electrification Center in Cologne from 2023 and will give a further push to the automaker's e-mobility strategy. Ford had originally planned just one model based on MEB with a total volume of around 600,000 units. The company has not yet released any details about the second planned model. - The MEB platform, which can be used by various brands and manufacturers, already provides the technology base for ten electric models from five brands. Used to build approximately 300,000 units in 2021, it is one of the leading electric platforms worldwide. It will be built at Ford's new state-of-the-art EV manufacturing centre in Cologne, Germany, launching in 2023 and being described officially as a “medium-sized crossover". - The cars will be joined in Ford's all-electric line-up by the Ford Puma EV, which will be sold as a stand-alone model from 2024. As a result of reworking Ford's production capacity to achieve this, the Ford Ecosport will cease production later this year. - The Transit Custom one-tonne van and Tourneo Custom multi-purpose vehicles will go on sale in 2023, followed in 2024 by a smaller, new Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier multi-purpose vehicle in 2024. This new Ford commercial vehicle battery plant will operate under a newly formed joint-venture between Ford, SK On Co., Ltd., and Koc - the three companies plan to create one of the largest EV battery facilities in the European wider region. - The new joint venture is planned for Ankara and will manufacture high Nickel NMC cells for assembly into battery array modules. Production is currently expected to start as early as mid-decade with an annual capacity likely to be in the range of 30 to 45 Gigawatt hours. This new battery joint venture will receive support directly from the Turkish Government and will directly benefit large and small commercial vehicle operators across Europe, reducing energy and running costs and providing a significant contribution to CO2 reduction, according to Ford. Promising to deliver more power, sharper handling and more extroverted looks, it will also mark the first step in the brand's transition to an all-electric range of cars when it hits showrooms, possibly as soon as next year. - Speaking to Auto Express, Fiat CEO Olivier François said, ‘The looks are the same. We need to be a little bit more extrovert. Abarth is always a little bit over the top, with spoilers and wheels.' - In the standard car the mid-level and range topping versions get a 42kWh battery producing 116bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 9 seconds and a 93mph top speed. That offers up to 104kWh of battery capacity, and electric motors punching out up to 241bhp. But how many e-motors would the Spider deploy, and where would they be mounted? - ‘The question of rear-drive or all-wheel drive is on the table at the moment,' Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato tells CAR in an exclusive interview. ‘Why not rear-wheel drive – if I have the performance! Obviously I love rear-wheel drive, but if I lose Alfa power or torque because I'm only rear-wheel drive then I prefer to be all-wheel drive.' - But head of design Mesonero-Romanos will insist on strong proportions, including a long bonnet emulating history's great combustion-engined GTs. - Even the industry has axed many convertibles and coupes as sales have plummeted, it won't be easy. ‘Today, there's not a single electric cabrio: it is hard,' admits the head of design. ‘But we need to make people fall in love with cars again.'
