When thinking on this topic my mate and mental health advocate Jazz Thornton was the perfect guest to discuss the process with, Jazz shares her decision to go back on medication last year, her and I's history which we've never spoken in depth about before. When talking about medication for our mental health, I wanted to pick the brain of Psychiatrist Robert Marchl on how the medication works, the stigma around them, are we being over prescribed and what's the journey like adjusting to meds.  This is a great episode for understanding, help with making the decision or just a couple of people that get how you feel   HELPFUL LINKS: Helpful links Find the pod on social media @bettermehopefullypodcastFind Sharyn @SharynCasey   Thanks heaps for listening you lovely human See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. This is I think her 5th novel – she writes really intriguing books about people being caught in a time and place and what can go wrong. A few years ago, I loved The Hunting Party which was quite Agatha Christie-esque, set in a hunting lodge in Scotland during a huge snowfall when no one could arrive or leave, where a group of long-time friends are spending New Year. When one of the guests is murdered, they know that the perpetrator must be one of their own … it was fun. This new one is set in an apartment in Paris, not that you'd have guessed that from the title. Jess is an English woman who's a bit down on her luck and asks her half-brother Ben if she can come and stay at his place – which turns out to be a much nicer apartment than she'd imagined he could afford, and strangely when she gets there, Ben's missing and doesn't come home. The neighbours are odd, some less than friendly, and as more time passes his absence becomes more and more mysterious – and suspicious. Letters to You by Jazz Thornton. Subtitled Words of Support and Inspiration for Difficult Times. Jazz was of course the 2021 Young New Zealander of the Year. The book is based on something that helped her on her own journey towards mental health. A good friend wrote her a set of letters each in a separate labelled envelope. Every letter was specifically designed to help fight a particular feeling or situation, and Jazz read them all many times. So, following this model, in this book, each chapter is in the form of a letter, and they cover a range of emotions and situations, including the following, and much more: Also includes practical tips from a practising psychologist, a list of places to get help, and a toolbox of handy skills to use when in distress.

Today we are speaking with an amazing young lady, Jazz Thornton. Having overcome childhood abuse and 14 suicide attempts, Jazz Thornton has now dedicated her life to speaking hope and creating change in the area of mental health.   She grew up in Timaru, New Zealand, moving to Auckland when she was 16. She struggled with mental health for as long as she can remember. As a child she had trouble regulating her emotions and as she got older this became increasingly worse. Finally when she was 20 she had a conversation that pivoted her life – and her first book, Stop Surviving Start Fighting, published by Penguin, is based on this conversation.   In 2017 Jazz began studying film and television where she directed her first short film "Dear Suicidal Me." The film went viral, being shared on international media around the world and gaining over 80 million views. Not long after that Jazz became the youngest New Zealander to win the annual Doc Edge pitching contest where she pitched her first series idea Jessica's Tree, which she went on to direct. The five-part series won the Best Web Series award at the Huawei NZ TV Awards, a gold award at the International New York Film Festival, and festival awards in Barcelona, Copenhagen and Toronto.   She co-founded Voices of Hope, a non-profit organisation which aims to create and implement change for mental health, whilst providing hope through the voices of those with lived experience. Through advocacy, campaigning and storytelling, Voices of Hope produces strategy and content with intent to influence global, communal and individual change.   Jazz was a semi-finalist for Young New Zealander of the Year in 2019, spoke at the UN’s Speak Your Mind event during the General Assembly in September 2019, and had coffee with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to discuss mental health in 2018.   THE GIRL ON THE BRIDGE is available to watch online and in select cinemas nationally to coincide with Mental Health Week (October 10-17).  Find out more at www.thegirlonthebridgefilm.com.au You will definitely need tissues for this podcast! WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENTThe number of people losing their lives to suicide has seen a marked decrease, with the latest statistics showing the rate to be the lowest in three years. The annual provisional suicide statistics, released this morning, show that in the year to June 30, 2020, there was a drop from 13.93 per 100,000 people to 13.01.That is a decrease of 31 deaths. In comparison, last year's rate was the highest it had been since records began 13 years ago.Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall said although it was encouraging to see the suspected suicide rate decrease in the past year, it was important to remember that there were still more than 650 families around New Zealand grieving for someone who had died in tragic circumstances during that time."My sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who died by suspected suicide in the past year," she said. With the release of the provisional results, Judge Marshall also called out those who had offered what she dubbed "unhelpful" commentary in relation to the effect the Covid-19 pandemic was having on people and the connection to suicides."Throughout this year, there has been unhelpful and irresponsible public commentary on the effect Covid-19 would have on the suicide rate."During the first lockdown period, I said it was unhelpful to release figures for such a short time frame, as it is nearly impossible to draw sound conclusion," she said.Lower stats for young people, higher for old"Nor do I believe such public discourse is helpful to people in distress."Within the newly released figures, results showed the rate of suspected suicides among Māori and Pasifika had both dropped - from 21.78 per 100,000 people to 20.24 and from 8.94 to 7.07 respectively. The rate for European Kiwis also went down from 13.02 to 12.08. The rate for Asians, however, went up by 20 deaths - from 5.09 to 7.91.Twelve more people aged between 80 and 84 years old died in the last year - up from six deaths last year. While the rates for deaths by suicide among young people decreased - particularly in those aged between 15 and 19 years old (73 to 59 teenagers) and those aged 20 to 24 years old (91 to 60 deaths).'There is always hope' - survivorJazz Thornton (right) with the police officer, constable Meikia Campbell, who saved her life when she was 19. Photo / SuppliedThis year's lower rates shows there is always hope, mental health advocate Jazz Thornton said."This is greatly encouraging news and may suggest things are changing for the better."Thornton is the co-founder of mental health advocacy charity Voices of Hope. She is also a survivor - having attempted suicide a number of times."If we continue to encourage safe and responsible discussion about mental health, then people feel much more comfortable being open about issues the may be facing and reaching out for support," she said.Director of the Suicide Prevention Office, Carla na Nagara, said the statistics should also end the "harmful speculation" about suicide numbers."Inaccurate, speculative and distressing information about the relationship between suicide risk and the Covid-19 response is unhelpful and has the potential to cause significant harm."While the Covid-19 response may have significant, long-term effects on people's lives, an increase in suicides is not inevitable," na Nagara said."There have been speculative comments on a wide range of platforms on media and social media of suicide numbers over recent months."This is distressing for families and communities, can be triggering for vulnerable people and further stretches the people who are working hard to provide support."We need to make sure that we are dealing with only the facts and remember that the Chief Coroner is the sole authority on real-time data for suspected suicides," she said."While it is encouraging to see that the number of suspected suicides over the course of the year is lower than the past two years, there is no con...

Voices of Hope was founded in 2014 by Genevieve Mora and Jazz Thornton. Both are mental illness survivors who felt the need to use their past experiences alongside our passion for creating content to provoke and bring change. They do this by creating videos that target mental illness issues as well as writing blog posts on different topics. Since the launch of Voices of Hope, their content has received both national and international recognition and has caught the attention of companies wanting to support their vision.
