The Fundraising Radicals
Authenticity, Values, and Social Impact with Ezra Hirawani | Ep 5

The Fundraising Radicals

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2023 59:25

Today's conversation and dose of ideas and inspiration comes from Ezra Hirawani here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Ezra, alongside Rob and Ben, his colleagues, is a co-founder of the Kaupapa Maori business, Nau Mai Rā, which is an alternative energy firm founded in Maori values and principles. They provide electricity to their customers and that enables them to support communities and the 130,000 families here in New Zealand who are living in power poverty. They have recently raised more than $600,000 from their community for their community. Ezra's work and impact led to him being recognized as the Kiwi Bank Young New Zealander of the Year. And he talks a little bit about how he stayed grounded following the sudden visibility that this brought. Every conversation I've ever had with Ezra fills me with joy. His humility and authenticity shine through in every word. He's living proof that you don't have to change who you are and you don't ever have to compromise your values to be an effective leader and to secure the funding you need to turn your idea into impact. I hope our conversation makes you think differently about how social impact is evolving and who can make a difference. Ez and Nau Mai Rā aren't just disrupting the energy sector here in Aotearoa New Zealand, they're creating a new model of social impact that is founded in values and thoughtfully balances business and financial sustainability with deep social impact. They're also building a carefully balanced community and shifting people from being one dimensional customers to becoming engaged citizens, leveraging their energy consumption to make a social difference. There are lessons here in how we approach this shift from customer to citizen with our own communities of donors and partners. This conversation is also about finding the spaces for collaboration where incentives and motivations overlap. If we can understand what motivates individuals and groups to action, then we can leverage commercial products and behaviors. And that means we can build organic movements, nurture and grow social impact, and we can transform customers into citizens. And then together, we make systemic change possible. For me, there's something powerful about the equity and respect within the Nau Mai Rā community. These citizens, whether they're living in power poverty, or they're purchasing power, they're all part of the extended community that are the whānau of Nau Mai Rā. But this isn't just about patiently and thoughtfully solving power poverty in partnership with others. It's about shifting how we think about community and how we engage and mobilise citizens within our society to deliver and achieve equity. How all of this takes deep confidence, the sort of resilient confidence that can only root and grow in the most powerful places. Those places where our causes overlap with our convictions. The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. This is I think her 5th novel – she writes really intriguing books about people being caught in a time and place and what can go wrong. A few years ago, I loved The Hunting Party which was quite Agatha Christie-esque, set in a hunting lodge in Scotland during a huge snowfall when no one could arrive or leave, where a group of long-time friends are spending New Year. When one of the guests is murdered, they know that the perpetrator must be one of their own … it was fun. This new one is set in an apartment in Paris, not that you'd have guessed that from the title. Jess is an English woman who's a bit down on her luck and asks her half-brother Ben if she can come and stay at his place – which turns out to be a much nicer apartment than she'd imagined he could afford, and strangely when she gets there, Ben's missing and doesn't come home. The neighbours are odd, some less than friendly, and as more time passes his absence becomes more and more mysterious – and suspicious. Letters to You by Jazz Thornton. Subtitled Words of Support and Inspiration for Difficult Times. Jazz was of course the 2021 Young New Zealander of the Year. The book is based on something that helped her on her own journey towards mental health. A good friend wrote her a set of letters each in a separate labelled envelope. Every letter was specifically designed to help fight a particular feeling or situation, and Jazz read them all many times. So, following this model, in this book, each chapter is in the form of a letter, and they cover a range of emotions and situations, including the following, and much more: Also includes practical tips from a practising psychologist, a list of places to get help, and a toolbox of handy skills to use when in distress.

Today we are speaking with an amazing young lady, Jazz Thornton. Having overcome childhood abuse and 14 suicide attempts, Jazz Thornton has now dedicated her life to speaking hope and creating change in the area of mental health.   She grew up in Timaru, New Zealand, moving to Auckland when she was 16. She struggled with mental health for as long as she can remember. As a child she had trouble regulating her emotions and as she got older this became increasingly worse. Finally when she was 20 she had a conversation that pivoted her life – and her first book, Stop Surviving Start Fighting, published by Penguin, is based on this conversation.   In 2017 Jazz began studying film and television where she directed her first short film "Dear Suicidal Me." The film went viral, being shared on international media around the world and gaining over 80 million views. Not long after that Jazz became the youngest New Zealander to win the annual Doc Edge pitching contest where she pitched her first series idea Jessica's Tree, which she went on to direct. The five-part series won the Best Web Series award at the Huawei NZ TV Awards, a gold award at the International New York Film Festival, and festival awards in Barcelona, Copenhagen and Toronto.   She co-founded Voices of Hope, a non-profit organisation which aims to create and implement change for mental health, whilst providing hope through the voices of those with lived experience. Through advocacy, campaigning and storytelling, Voices of Hope produces strategy and content with intent to influence global, communal and individual change.   Jazz was a semi-finalist for Young New Zealander of the Year in 2019, spoke at the UN’s Speak Your Mind event during the General Assembly in September 2019, and had coffee with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to discuss mental health in 2018.   THE GIRL ON THE BRIDGE is available to watch online and in select cinemas nationally to coincide with Mental Health Week (October 10-17).  Find out more at www.thegirlonthebridgefilm.com.au You will definitely need tissues for this podcast! People often think that you have to be the math or science geek and be really switched on in terms of numbers. But to me, tech's really just more creative. I like the possibilities of what you can build, how you can improve lives, how you can solve problems all through tech and you can do it in a pretty cost-effective, quick way."
