Over 45,000 years ago, Ice Age Britain was undergoing a transformation. The first modern humans, Homo sapiens, were arriving and beginning to settle in the British Isles. Their evolutionary predecessors, the Neanderthals, were on their way to extinction. Until now we have known very little about this period. But that might be about to change with the discovery of a new centre of Stone Age archeology in South West Wales.Wogan Cavern, situated underneath Pembroke Castle, was the ideal place for newly-arrived prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities to dwell and is littered with stone tools, bones and other hallmark remains of ancient human settlement. In this special on-location episode of The Ancients, Tristan Hughes went to visit the cavern and speak to the archeologists who uncovered it, Dr. Rob Dinnis and Dr. Jennifer French. In 1974, at twelve years old, Deb Donner's mother joined what she thought was loving, trusting, close-knit Christian Fellowship, committed to helping anyone in need called, The Ingleside United Methodist Church. They called themselves The Fellowship, and they were pastored by a man named Lou Hillendahl who touted an ‘inner healing ministry' that 'helped hundreds of people with all kinds of problems'. TW: adult & child abuse & sexual abuse Lou infused his version of biblical teachings with pseudo-psycho beliefs, constantly creating new “therapies” to “deal with the personal, family and sexual” problems he identified within his parishioners. In 1976, Lou began teaching that “sex is a myth in our culture” and developed bizarre therapies to prove his theory. At 14, against Deb's will, she was involved in several of the therapies. Knowing she wasn't supposed to talk about what she had experienced, she also knew it wasn't right, and told someone. The media got hold of the information and started bombarding Lou for interviews. When the church found out, they decided to take action and hold him accountable. On March 21, 1977, Lou submitted his resignation to the Methodist church to avoid a heresy trial. Lou and several of his devoted followers decided to create their own community, and eventually purchased a 58-acre plot of land on Vashon Island in Washington State where they lived in big green army tents for years while the community built homes, and a couple buildings. They called themselves The Wesleyan Community, officially called, The Wesleyan Christian Community Church and Retreat Center. Melissa was raised in a conservative, cult-like faction of the fundamentalist Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She left the church when she turned 18 and it was the late 80's. At the time, she was thinking she was out, done, through. Throwing herself into "the real world" she modeled, acted, earned an Ivy League degree, worked in politics, finance, and high tech. She also married twice and had two children. In addition, she also did a lot of exploring of all that had been forbidden! And always...she wrote. In her 30's she found out that various male members of her family had been abusers within the church. This sent her on a decades-long discovery process: confronting family members and tracking down and speaking to the victims. She formed an unlikely bond with one of the victims, and this led her to uncover and address her own trauma from purity culture, the patriarchal stranglehold, and church abuse. The Glory Whole is the name of her instagram account which she refers to as “a work in progress that chronicles her story”. If you follow her, you will occasionally see excerpts from her memoir, which is in process. Naomi Van Winkle was born into a religious group (King's Chapel) in Connecticut which was essentially a Christian cult. The group had a female leader who was based at their headquarters in England (Mansfield Woodhouse) and dictated much of the community's ongoings as well as individual lives, with the use of fear & high pressure tactics to interrogate and manipulate. After many years and as part of her own healing journey of discovery and exploration, Naomi and others are telling their stories through a podcast series that Naomi created, called Cult in Connecticut. In it, Naomi shares about her experience of being born and raised in this cult, and the journey of healing from the pain and confusion she experienced growing up. At eighteen, Naomi left the church and everything she had ever known to begin a new life. We discuss her process of leaving, healing, experiencing life and much more! Naomi is also a Nashville creative artist and business owner! Janice Selbie was born and raised in a charismatic Christian home, attending Pentecostal, Vineyard, and other Evangelical churches before eventually marrying a man who would become a pastor. In her 30s she became ultraconservative, wearing a head-covering, homeschooling their children, and rejecting any vestiges of secular life ( including TV, radio, music, newspapers, magazines, etc.). “I referred to myself as ‘Mennocostal,' frequently attending closed Mennonite churches run by the Holdeman Mennonites.” It wasn't until her 40s that Janice began experiencing doubts about her deeply held faith. As her marriage unraveled, her questions grew. She found herself wondering about the impact of religion on sexuality, gender roles and equality, social justice, and more. “Not permitted to explore these questions, I felt like a beach ball held beneath the water for too long. My sadness, confusion, and anger threatened to explode if something didn't change.” After ending her decades-long marriage, Janice went back to school to attain her Diploma of Applied Psychology and Counseling. “My passion is to help others who are experiencing the multiple significant losses associated with religious de-conversion. My own journey could have been easier if I had been able to connect with even one other person who had walked away from their faith and built a healthy life afterward.” These painful experiences influenced Janice to develop the Divorcing Religion Workshop so that others could gain knowledge and tools to help with their own journey out of fundamentalist religions. In May of 2021, Janice hosted the inaugural on-line 'Conference on Religious Trauma' (CORT), with over 20 speakers providing education & insight into RTS & recovery. Kenneth Garrett is currently the senior pastor of Grace Church, located in Portland, OR. He is the founder of the Spiritual Abuse Forum for Education, and he is also a member of the advisory board of ICSA (International Cultic Studies Association). Ken and Sharon (his wife) have 3 daughters and four grandchildren whom they see often. Ken has written a book called, “In the House of Friends. Understanding and Healing from Spiritual Abuse in Christian Churches”. You will hear a little bit about the book during our discussion but if you'd like to know more, you can find the book at the Amazon link below. From 1984-1996, Ken and Sharon were part of an abusive church with a pastor who is still in an ongoing legal case. However, on January 23 2020, a jury found the pastor guilty of the sexual abuse of a minor, and sentenced him to 160 months without the possibility of parole. Ken's book is a wonderful preventative resource that I would recommend for all who are or want to be part of a church community. In addition, for those serving Christian communities, this is also an excellent resource for leadership. Red Bear was the spirit name given to Kelly during a ceremony held by the tribe's founder, John Twobirds. She began writing her memoir about six years ago when a little voice started persistently nagging her to, “Write this crazy stuff down!” And so, she gave into this call, grabbing moments where she could in between the cooking, laundry and school runs. And now, to our benefit, she shares her story in this beautifully written memoir. Megan and Dom Benninger speak about their religious backgrounds and their journeys together through a religious cult, a charismatic nondenominational church, and a Southern Baptist church that all exhibited signs of spiritual abuse. As survivors, they have dedicated their lives to preventing spiritual abuse in institutional settings and serving others who have also been abused under the guise of Christianity. They hope to provide a safe place for victims of spiritual abuse to share their stories without judgement. They want to identify spiritually abusive wolves within organized religion, to protect others from harm. To find out more about this part of their mission, go to https://baptistaccountability.org/. They want to help others identify the signs and symptoms of spiritual abuse through their written works and educational resources, as well as through speaking engagements. Debbie is the first parent and family member with a loved one in a group of high demand, that I've had the opportunity to interview on the Project Hope Podcast. Debbie is not just a mother but also served as a United Methodist minister for 40 years. She is currently retired and lives in Bend, Oregon with her husband John. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading to children through the SMART reading program, as well as making quilts to give away. She is in the process of planning, together with John, as they build a net-zero house in Bend. It was such a pleasure to speak with Debbie and receive her story around the heartache and considerations that a parent specifically can experience when their child is in a group of high control / high demand. If you would like to hear her son, Joel Pitney speak to his experience, please refer to episode 11. Especially for those family members and friends with loved ones close to you heart who are in such groups, I hope you find that our discussion leaves you feeling not so alone. The below article that is an interview that Joel conducted with Debbie. I believe it will provide further context to Debbie as it includes some references to how she has been a trailblazer in her own right. https://religiondispatches.org/of-god-but-not-god-a-methodist-minister-speaks-about-churchs-refusal-to-open-its-doors-to-lgbt/ Jennifer is a mental health counselor located in the Los Angeles area, using Internal Family Systems (IFS) as the primary modality of psychotherapy that she uses with clients. Anna Fienbork was born in Austria, grew up and lived in Germany and the US, and is currently living in Bavaria. Her career has led her from studying Art History, to theatre, to studying again with a focus on education and working with the hearing impaired and children with special needs. What initially drew her to the group of high control that she became deeply involved with was the emotional-spiritual paradigm, that allowed her to take a deeper dive into working with inner parts, and further opening up spiritually. In that context she worked as an emotional facilitator in one on one sessions as well as in groups with both adults and children. She also gave seminars on the human psyche and how the structure of emotions can be explained within the paradigm of these teachings. During this time, Anna also learned emotional and energetic body work, helping others to release old patterns, in order to help people open up to their own potential. Anna is now a practicing psychotherapist (Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie). She also does online work as a coach with her main focus on helping couples find their way from struggles and a sense of having lost one another to healing communication and fulfilling closeness. Her passion to support people in learning to feel self love again, and relating to themselves and others from that place stems from her belief that relationship w oneself and others is one of the most important aspects to life. I initially met Michael Maciel when he packed up his things and joined us in Oakland, CA to become a part of the Order of Christ Sophia (aka. OCS and the Centers of Light). Unique to Michael's story is that he had already been ordained a priest in an mystical school that was the predecessor to the OCS, called the Holy Order of MANS (aka. HOOM). In this discussion, we dive into his history prior to the OCS, as well as how he came to join, and the unravelment of his experience with Peter Bowes. Since leaving the OCS, Michael has taken up the HOOM name and is carrying it forward with others. Present day, Michael Maciel is a priest and teacher in the Holy Order of MANS, which is categorized as an esoteric school of initiation. He is the author of The Mystical Christ, an online journal of reflections on contemporary spiritual life. He has written two books, The Five Vows - Raising Your Spiritual Commitment to the Next Level and World Priest - Bringing Heaven to Earth, and is also the creator of The Mystical Christ Academy, a series of online tutorials for personal spiritual development. Michael has two YouTube channels, The Mystical Christ and Lectures and Interviews, a collection of discussions on mystical Bible interpretation and esoteric symbolism. You can also connect with Michael on Facebook. I have known Marialicia Gonzalez for 22 years. She was the person who invited me to my very first Order of Christ Sophia event. When the teachers leading the group divided, she went with Peter Bowes who renamed his group, Ruach Center. This group is still functioning and Peter Bowes continues to lead the organization. Mari's story around her leaving is both heartbreaking and eye opening as it provides insight into the psychological torment that all too often happens in groups of high control. As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, Mari was raised in Miami, and currently lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest. Helen Zuman is the author of Mating in Captivity (She Writes Press 2018), a memoir of her five years, post-Harvard, at Zendik Farm, a cult with a radical take on sex and relationships. After leaving Zendik in 2004, she helped expose its twisted innards via her Zendik FAQ. More recently, she's shared her story at the conferences of the International Cultic Studies Association, the Communal Studies Association (which honored Mating in Captivity with its 2020 Timothy Miller Outstanding Book Award), and the International Communal Studies Association. She's also written about aspects of her cult and communal experiences for Communities and Livelihood magazines, and the Foundation for Intentional Community's website. In all, she's visited or lived at more than a dozen co-ops, cults, communes, and intentional communities throughout the United States; she now homesteads with her husband on a steeply sloped quarter acre in Beacon, New York. In this interview you will get a flavor of Helen's writing and most importantly her spirit and journey out of Zendik and into the life she now lives. Laura Hartzell Pitney was a part of Andrew Cohen's following and the EnlightenNext community for 10 years. She also worked for EnlightenNext for those years in various roles, helping to launch their online audio offerings, fundraising, and her final role was functioning as Director of Development. I am so moved by Laura's story and appreciative of all she's shared so personally. Part of what I really appreciated was how she was able to describe the transformative experience of being drawn into new ideas and experiences, and how powerful this can be. Laura does a beautiful job of sharing multiple anecdotes that string together a clear tapestry of one's inner process, the struggle along the way, and what keeps us tied. She really captures the power of persuasion and the complications within these groups that come with having deep and real experiences. Joel Pitney is a writer and founder of the company Launch My Book, Inc. He was a part of the EnlightenNext community and worked very closely with Andrew Cohen for 10 years. He also wrote for What Is Enlightenment? Magazine, a publication that was a widely distributed and highly renowned publication in it's genre. Joel is currently writing a book about his experiences at EnlightenNext, tentatively titled, “Project Utopia”. He also lives in in Bend, Oregon with his wife, Laura (who will also be on the podcast!), and their son, Jackson. In this podcast you will learn about how Joel and I met at a time when we were both in high demand groups but most importantly, you will hear about his experience in EnlightenNext as well as his thoughts about how and why it fell apart. This story is one that is not readily available online and yet Andrew Cohen's following was substantial and then seemingly ended abruptly in 2013. Joel shares his observations and thoughts about all of this with a refreshing perspective and insight that only those who were part of the so called inner community of such groups might have. Victoria shares the story of her healing journey from the church she grew up in and the pastor currently leading Truth House Ministry Church. Trigger warning: sexual abuse I believe that one of the most powerful things about this interview is that, through Victoria's sharing, we really get to understand the courage it takes to speak out as a survivor of sexual abuse but to also have the layer of spiritual abuse on top of that along with the excruciating rejection and inability to get through to those on the inside of a group who are under extreme manipulation and coercion. In this interview, Victoria shares about being raised in the Truth House Ministry Church, run by the pastor, Dr. E.C. Fulcher, Jr. who Victoria says sexually assaulted her at least 15 times over the course of 3 years. Her story reveals the culture of fear and domination existent within this church that has allowed for this pastor to continue to run the church and carry on with business as usual even after authorities obtained a search warrant for Truth House Ministry Church on October 16, 2019, confiscating Fulcher's mobile phone and conducting a forensic audit that reveals much about his sexual activities and appetites. For more details, please refer to the article that has been written about Victoria's story at: http://noedenelsewhere.com/the-truth-about-truth-house-ministry-church-dr-e-c-fulcher-jr/ We hope that this episode helps to get Victoria's story out into the public sphere so that others know the truth and that authorities engage to stop the possible continued abuse that could be happening. In 1989, at the age of 22, Alexandra Amor moved to Vancouver, BC and joined what she thought was a meditation class. Ten years later, she escaped what she describes as having become a mind control cult run by a self-serving guru. Leaving behind all her friends, her spiritual community, her sense of self, and the man she loved, Alexandra moved out into the world searching for healing, and to understand what had happened to her. “Cult, A Love Story” is the Amazon best-selling, award-winning memoir that shows by example how we are drawn into high-demand (cultic) groups. And what recovery from that experience looks like. For me, this is one of those books that is helpful from every angle as Alexandra so beautifully writes about her experience and then gives us the bonus of seamlessly weaving it into her own learning about these patterns typically found in cultic groups and controlling leaders. I highly recommend this book for families and friends with a loved one in such a situation as well as those who have left such groups and want a really well written memoir that also serves to educate. Cory Inman is a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University School of Medicine who studies the effect deep brain stimulation has on the emotional experience of humans. He seeks to treat depression in patients and potentially improve their memories through the effects of deep brain stimulation. In this episode, he explains how his team studies deep brain stimulation and navigates the ethics associated with the rising technology. Top Three Takeaways: The exact areas of brain stimulation determine if the patient experiences a change in emotion. Rat and other animal models lead to inferencing in order to see the results of deep brain stimulation. The ethics of deep brain stimulation and research must always be realized in order to prevent the technology from being abused. [0:00] Ladan introduces Cory Inman and explains how he studies deep brain stimulation and its effects on the emotional aspect of someone’s personality. He also invites listeners to the 2019 Bioelectronic Medicine Forum in New York. To register, follow the hyperlink or call (415) 546-1259. If you mention the Neural Implant Podcast Channel, you will receive a free ebook written by Jennifer French and published by Neurotech Press. [2:30] Inman explains how he has tried to enhance memory through deep brain stimulations. [3:15] His team studied how stimulating the amygdala could affect depression. [4:30] Patients who are having their brains monitored by implantable electrodes monitoring for seizures are asked if they would like to participate in research on deep brain stimulation and emotion. [6:20] Inman goes into detail about the conversations occurring surrounding the ethics of deep brain stimulation. [8:00] It is explained how Inman’s research institution sees 30-45 patients a year which is much more than other ones focusing on deep brain stimulation. [8:45] The stimulations in the brain are very localized; very specific nuclei in the amygdala can be stimulated. [10:00] Neurologists agree that certain areas of the brain are not normal in epileptic patients; these areas of the brain could be removed if they are redundant in other parts of the brain. [12:00] Out of sixty patients, only about two patients experienced emotional changes with amygdala stimulation. [13:30] The exact areas of brain stimulation determine if the patient experiences a change in emotion. [14:00] Most of the human cognition occurs unconsciously; different areas and amounts of stimulation to the neural circuit could lead to awareness of emotional differences. [15:15] Inman explains that staying aware of the ethics of deep brain stimulation poses the largest challenge to his team. Another challenge involves the lack of knowledge in the area. [17:00] The amperage and frequency can be altered in stimulation; another challenge involves a large number of variables that can be altered with deep brain stimulation. [19:30] Animal models provide more flexibility to modify parameters that can be later applied to humans. [20:15] Stimulation of the amygdala is dose-dependent—increased and stronger stimulation leads to more of a response. [21:00] Rat and other animal models lead to inferencing in order to see the results of deep brain stimulation. [22:00] Implications of this research involves helping people suffering from disabilities and diseases. [23:50] Inman shares how one can easily lose a sense of self when suffering from memory loss. [25:00] Inman hopes to use deep brain stimulation to help people remember the memories that create a sense of self. [26:00] Inman expresses his concern for the use of deep brain stimulation to control the emotions of other people; he says that it is our job to make sure the dark side of this technology never emerges. [27:30] Ladan explains how this technology is very controlled and would be hard to take advantage of. [29:00] With unlimited funding, Inman would gather all of the world experts in various neural technologies to create an augmented reality for patients that would help improve memories. [30:40] Inman wants to test the real-life memories of people outside of controlled experimental settings. [32:00] The NeuroPace RNS is placed in epilepsy patients that get seizures from multiple areas of the brain at one time. [33:15] The device monitors areas of the brain known for causing seizures and stops them via stimulation. [35:30] Inman wants to create a virtual reality that could help test people’s memories and help increase their retention. [37:00] Inman expresses his gratitude for the Neural Implant Podcast Channel because it creates an outlet for developments in neural technologies. [40:00] Ladan describes his interest in how deep brain stimulation could affect people’s emotional states.

Jennifer French of Neurotech Reports received a spinal cord injury in 1998 and became the first woman to receive the Stand and Transfer neural implant system. A silver medalist in sailing at the 2012 Paralympic Games, she sits down to discuss her experiences with her implantable device and how it has affected her life. During this discussion, she mentions her struggles and successes with her device along with her concerns and hopes for the technology. If you like this episode then come to the Bioelectronic Medicine Forum in New York on April 4th. To register, follow the hyperlink or call (415) 546-1259. If you mention the Neural Implant Podcast Channel, you will receive a free ebook written by Jennifer French and published by Neurotech Press. Top Three Takeaways: Body sensors in neural implants have unknown lifespans; their potential failure induces a sense of stress. The implantation of electrodes involves invasive surgery and long recovery time; the development of more reliable electrodes and less invasive procedures is necessary. There is a large risk concerning cybersecurity and tapping into wireless devices, such as pacemakers. Show Notes: [0:00] Ladan introduces Jennifer French from Neurotech Report; he also invites listeners to the 2019 Bioelectronic Medicine Forum in New York. To register, follow the hyperlink or call (415) 546-1259. If you mention the Neural Implant Podcast Channel, you will receive a free ebook written by Jennifer French and published by Neurotech Press. [3:00] It is mentioned how sensor failure associated with closed-loop diabetes treatment induces stress. [4:20] Different kinds of sensors in the body have unknown lifespans; they may or may not last very long. [5:40] The developers for the original pacemaker created in the 1960s and 1970s by Medtronic relied on guessed parameters. [8:00] Describing muscle stimulation, it is noted that muscles do not act in isolation; once one muscle is stimulated, another will act differently. [9:25] Machinomite IST uses two channels to allow someone to stand and adds ankle movement as well. [11:10] Network Neural Prosthesis (NNP) looks to build a network into the body in order to create modules and provide other functions. [12:30] Jen French describes the controls of her neural prosthetic implant. [14:55] The controls use buttons to activate muscles; there is usually a three-second delay for ramp-up. [17:10] French describes the first implant she had in 1999 that included eight electrode channels. [18:40] Many factors can lead to the failure of electrodes. [20:10] French has gone through four major surgeries for her electrodes. [22:10] When one gets electrodes put in, two major aspects are needed: the electrodes must be effective and they cannot shift. [23:40] Doing research on higher mammals and moving towards minimally invasive procedures will improve the field of electrodes. [25:10] Cuff electrodes use less power and allow for more flexibility. [27:10] Black boxes for the electrodes often overheat. [29:40] There is a large risk concerning cybersecurity and tapping into wireless devices, such as pacemakers. [32:40] Society is getting to the point where it will soon be able to monitor implantable devices on mobile phones. [37:10] French does not know her expectations concerning her implants because she is still participating in a clinical trial. [40:10] Coming up with systemic ways of funding is necessary to ensure no patients are forgotten in clinical trials. [42:10] Patients in failed clinical trials should be granted new opportunities. [43:00] French constantly must stimulate her muscles via several techniques to prevent atrophy. [45:10] French explains how the stimulation has affected her autonomic system. [48:10] Autonomic systems are very much affected by spinal cord injuries. [50:40] Aiming for easier targets in neural implant function may allow for more easily acquired secondary functions.
