Where should we begin examining our problems with relationships, cheating, conflict, and more? Legendary therapist Esther Perel talks us through it here! What We Discuss with Esther Perel: People who cheat don't necessarily want to leave their partner — they want to leave what they have become, or to get in touch with another part of themselves that they miss. Is monogamy a state that mating humans evolved toward naturally, or is it more of a social construct imposed for the sake of control? Most of us don't argue because we love conflict, but because we're trying to galvanize some kind of change that requires another person's participation. So how can we argue better for the sake of both parties? What we can learn from conflict — especially with respect to creating connection. As an expert in intimacy and human connection, where does Esther see us heading as a species when we can all have bespoke AI in our pocket that just exists to make us happy? And much more... As an intimacy coach she is serving as a catalyst to change the narrative on how sex, relationships, and love are viewed, particularly by those of African descent and Christian backgrounds. Erica dismisses the stigma that sex positivity equates to promiscuity. Instead, embracing the joy of natural sexual energy and expression. Esther Perel's PerspectiveEsther Perel is a Belgian-born psychotherapist who specializes in couple therapy in New York City. Perel is fluent in nine languages and serves as an organizational consultant for major companies. Perel's TED talks have more than 20 million views. She's a New York Times bestselling author and is also an executive producer and host of the popular podcast “Where Should We Begin?”.  StoryShot #1: The Quest for Security Undermines Erotic VitalityHumans naturally seek security. As a result, most humans commit to long-term monogamous relationships. We often make this decision based on the security associated with this relationship, rather than our sexual drive. As well as having a propensity for security, we also have an equally strong drive for adventure and excitement. However, security and excitement are challenging to combine. Hence, humans struggle to lust with the same person that they seek comfort and stability. Importantly, Esther Perel explains that it is impossible. It is easy to see that desire often fades as security increases in a relationship. Hence, desire typically fades as relationships lengthen. Perel describes two viewpoints where people can stand in a relationship. Either people are romantics who desire intensity and adventure over stability or realists who value security over passions. However, people are often left disappointed on both ends of the spectrum. Healthy relationships often require both desire and security.  Perel believes that love and desire are not mutually exclusive. Still, they generally do not take place simultaneously. The reasoning is that security and passions are different human needs that are underpinned by different motives. Perel says intimate friction is unsurprising, given the recent evolution of modern social support systems. For many of us, the idea of an extended family and a close-knit community has been all but dismantled. In its place is a more anxious, transplanted independence. Intimacy has become overburdened with unrealistic expectations. We expect our partners to be passionate and sexual, but we also expect them to adopt several other roles. We expect them to provide creativity, intellectual discussions, psychological advice, stress-busting, caregiving, and work management. These things are fantastic to have in a partner, and everyone is entitled to their own needs and desires. However, nobody will be perfect at everything. If you believe your partner should be perfect, you will struggle when your partner decides to behave in a way that is true to their authentic self. The sense of safety that you've manufactured becomes threatened, and you will react with negative emotions. If you drop your ideas of perfection, you can create a sense of independence within the relationship. You can provide your relationship with the space to breathe and grow organically. StoryShot #2: Love Seeks Closeness, but Desire Needs Distance Intimacy and sex are often associated with being physically close to somebody. However, Perel explains that separateness is what encourages connection. This includes emotional separation. For example, we generally choose partners whose strengths match our vulnerabilities. Later, we may associate intimacy with a concern for the other person's well-being. This leads to safe...

Helen Zuman is the author of Mating in Captivity (She Writes Press 2018), a memoir of her five years, post-Harvard, at Zendik Farm, a cult with a radical take on sex and relationships. After leaving Zendik in 2004, she helped expose its twisted innards via her Zendik FAQ. More recently, she's shared her story at the conferences of the International Cultic Studies Association, the Communal Studies Association (which honored Mating in Captivity with its 2020 Timothy Miller Outstanding Book Award), and the International Communal Studies Association. She's also written about aspects of her cult and communal experiences for Communities and Livelihood magazines, and the Foundation for Intentional Community's website. In all, she's visited or lived at more than a dozen co-ops, cults, communes, and intentional communities throughout the United States; she now homesteads with her husband on a steeply sloped quarter acre in Beacon, New York.  In this interview you will get a flavor of Helen's writing and most importantly her spirit and journey out of Zendik and into the life she now lives. Not gonna lie, Steve and I are nearly four years into our relationship and my sexual drive has shifted from when we first met. Now I know this is a normal thing but I wanted to know why for two reasons. One, my, "it's too late, I'm too tired, I'm about to get my period", and so on reasons were wearing Steve down. Second, I didn't want to be nearly 35 years old and dismissing my sexual energy. I got onto an incredible book by Esther Perel, Mating In Captivity. In my opinion this is a must read for everyone to appreciate the real reasons why it takes a lot of work, creativity and open communication in long term relationships for sex to be part of the relationship. In this episode I'm sharing my journey and what I've discovered so far.

After some short technical difficulties, I finally connected with today's guest, Helen Zuman, a tree-hugging dirt worshipper devoted to turning waste into food and the stinky guck of experience into fertile, fragrant prose. She holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard and a Half-FA in memoir from Hunter College. Raised in Brooklyn, she lives with her husband in Beacon, NY and Black Mountain, NC.She is the author of Mating in Captivity (She Writes Press 2018), a memoir of her five years, post-Harvard, in a cult with a radical take on sex and relationships. Mating in Captivity received a starred review from Kirkus, was named a Kirkus Best Indie Memoir of 2018, was a finalist in Creative Nonfiction for the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses' 2019 Firecracker Award, and was both first runner-up in memoir and a finalist for First Horizon and Grand Prize honors in the 2020 Eric Hoffer Awards. Other work has appeared in The New Farmers Almanac, in Communities and Livelihood magazines, and on the Foundation for Intentional Community's website (ic.org). Mating in Captivity: When recent Harvard grad Helen Zuman moved to Zendik Farm in 1999, she was thrilled to discover that the Zendiks used go-betweens to arrange sexual assignations, or “dates,” in cozy shacks just big enough for a double bed and a nightstand. Here, it seemed, she could learn an honest version of the mating dance – and form a union free of “Deathculture” lies. No one spoke the truth: Arol, the Farm's matriarch, crushed any love that threatened her hold on her followers' hearts. An intimate look at a transformative cult journey, Mating in Captivity shows how stories can trap us and free us, how miracles rise out of crisis, how coercion feeds on forsaken self-trust.In addition to cults, we also talk about the journey to trust oneself, the "infinite growth myth," gift circles, her connection to a well balanced eco-village that is doing intentional living well and how she takes care of herself (no social media!). I can personally highly recommend her book even for those not remotely curious about how one gets pulled into a cult. It's extremely well written and uniquely empowering to hear some of the more difficult details of her story.Looking for an intentional community or wondering about the health of one you're currently in? Helen's article may be of help to you. And if you do have friends, family or loved ones you fear are wrapped up in a cult, eh hm, political party, then Helen recommends some resources written by therapist and cult expert Steven Hassan. You can tune in to hear the best thing Helen's Mom did easing her exit from the cult mind-control.Today's show was engineered by Nick Panken of Freedom Highway. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who inspires you! We talked about the challenges people face in relationships and aspects of having a healthy sex life. Here are some of the main points we touched on: The Mating in Captivity series that Dewaldt and his wife hosted for couples struggling during the lockdown, and what it was all about What can stir sexual attraction to your spouse after you've been married several years What a sexual tasting menu is, and why you can benefit from making use of it in your relationship A story about how sexuality can be reclaimed How much time and attention to dedicate only to your children Why people have affairs and what can be done to repair damaged relationships How to treat the sacred space that is shared in a relationship Why it's important to understand your spouse's "back story" Tips on how to cherish your spouse What the ECCT approach is, and why it is a valuable way of interacting with your spouse You're in for some great stuff here! Enjoy it.   Until next time.   Much love, FrancoisRemember: Change your perspective and you can transform your life!

'Mating in Captivity ... articulates a poignant and unacknowledged modern crisis for the first time' Evening Standard When you love someone, how does it feel? And when you desire someone, how is it different? In Mating in Captivity, Esther Perel looks at the story of sex in committed couples. Modern romance promises it all - a lifetime of togetherness, intimacy and erotic desire. In reality, it's hard to want what you already have. Our quest for secure love conflicts with our pursuit of passion. And often, the very thing that got us to into our relationships - lust - is the one thing that goes missing from them. Determined to reconcile the erotic and the domestic, Perel explains why democracy is a passion killer in the bedroom. Argues for playfulness, distance, and uncertainty. And shows what it takes to bring lust home. Smart, sexy and explosively original, Mating in Captivity is the monogamist's essential bedside read.

Infidelity is complicated for so many reasons. Many people can’t even agree on what cheating really is. If you got a lap dance at a club, is that cheating? If you flirted with a stranger at the grocery store, is that cheating? If you watched porn, is that cheating? There are a lot of statistics about cheating available online and, unfortunately, a lot of the numbers are self-reported so their accuracy isn’t exactly guaranteed. I found one piece in the New York Times that said, “…national surveys indicate that 15% of married women and 25% of married men have had extramarital affairs. The incidence is about 20% higher when emotional and sexual relationships without intercourse are included.” That’s a lot of cheating! When it comes to infidelity, you can bury your head in the sand if you choose but, with those odds, there’s a good chance you’re going to encounter it in a relationship. Then what? On this podcast I speak with Robert Weiss. The author of 10 books on sex, intimacy and relationships including Sex Addiction 101, Out of the Doghouse: A Step-By-Step Relationship Saving Guide For Men Caught Cheating and Prodependence, Dr. Rob and I cover many infidelity topics including: WHY MEN TYPICALLY CHEAT THE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT REASONS WHY WOMEN TYPICALLY CHEAT WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT YOUR PARTNER IS CHEATING ON YOU THE ONE THING YOU CAN DO AS A COUPLE TO DRASTICALLY LOWER THE RISK OF INFIDELITY IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP Dr. Rob’s Sex, Love, and Addiction Podcast is a Top 10 Addiction Podcast. He also hosts a no-cost weekly Sex and Intimacy Q&A on the Seeking Integrity sponsored website, SexandRelationshipHealing.com (@SexandHealing). Dr. Rob can be contacted via Seeking Integrity.com and SexandRelationshipHealing.com. You can follow him on Twitter (@RobWeissMSW), LinkedIn (Robert Weiss LCSW), and Facebook (Rob Weiss MSW).  Dr. Rob mentions the work of Psychotherapist Esther Perel, the bestselling author of Mating In Captivity, a bold and provocative take on intimacy and sex. In Mating in Captivity, Esther Perel asks the question, “How can you want, what you already have?”  Love is about having; desire is about wanting. When you have too much desire you’re insecure and anxious. On the other hand, when you have too much love you’re too comfortable, you have too much security, and you feel trapped. The thesis of Mating in Captivity is that if you’d like to create passionate, long-lasting relationship you’ll need find a balance between your love and your desire. Perel gives her advice and tactics on how to find this balance. Relationships are still complicated. "We are creatures of meaning and we want to feel we matter." -Esther Perel The Cheat Sheet: Why have we lost the value of relational intelligence? How to know if you're in a role or are being accountable? How to rekindle relationships. Why the first person to apologize holds the power. How can you break the cycle of hostile dependence? And so much more... If we've been in relationships since the dawn of humankind why are they still so complicated? Here to answer that question is psychologist Esther Perel. Esther is a two-time Ted Talks speaker who wrote the New York Times best-selling book Mating in Captivity. Today on The Art of Charm Esther shares why men need more roles than simply the breadwinner, how we can appreciate the relationships we have and why the quality of our lives really is dependent on the quality of our relationships. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out HostGator! More About This Show Esther Perel has been likened to a current day Dr. Ruth; her work is groundbreaking and pivotal to today's perspective on relationships. She is a licensed and practicing psychotherapist who has been profiled by The New York Times and The New Yorker. Her book, Mating in Captivity, is an international bestseller that has been published in 24 different languages. Obviously she knows a few things about the world of relationships! And on today's show she discusses why relationships are still complicated after thousands of years, why men deserve more freedom in their accepted roles in life and how we can rekindle any neglected relationship. Although we've been in relationship as long as we've been in existence, we're still experiencing significant challenges and problems in our relationships. Why? Why haven't we figured it out yet? Esther says it's because we have so many more choices today, something we've never had that before. Couple that with our adopted attitude of novelty, replacement and you'll understand why fewer people stay together through the difficult times. What if you are one of those couples who is navigating a difficult time and you want to rekindle the spark you once had together? The first step is to acknowledge your role in the situation. Ask yourself if you're treating your partner the way you treat your clients? Are you as good to your significant other as you are to other people in your life? If the answer is no then say so to your partner. And once you've acknowledged your lack of appreciation, start appreciating that person more. Don't save the gratitude for anniversaries, birthdays and Valentine's Day. Do something for them, give them the day off from being a mom or a caretaker. Take care of them for a change, and show your appreciation for all they do. If you're away on a business trip write a letter thanking your significant other for the things they do to make your life better, from taking care of the house while you're gone to caring for your kids, etc. You'll feel elevated by elevating and showing your gratitude for them. Esther also spells out how we can diffuse any argument no matter the subject and what hostile dependence is and how to let go of it in any relationship. Join Esther Perel—best-selling author and internationally acclaimed expert on couples and sexuality—as she discusses obstacles and anxieties couples face when their quest for secure love conflicts with their pursuit of passion. Contrary to popular belief, sexual problems are not always the result of relational problems, and improving the emotional relationship may do little to improve the sex. Using case examples and video vignettes, Perel probes the bonds and conflicts between love and desire and crack open the mystery of eroticism that lies in the tension between them. Attendees will gain numerous clinical learnings and applications, including: a multicultural perspective on differing notions of love, marriage and sexual behaviors, highlighting the relationship between culture and sexuality; an identification of common blocks to eroticism including the fear of abandonment or entrapment, and the shame, guilt and worry that preclude the pursuit of pleasure; an understanding of how changing the sexual relation can transform a couple's entire relationship; strategies for helping couples balance their need for security and closeness with their quest for separateness and passion; and techniques for helping couples cultivate eroticism, bringing a sense of aliveness to the relationship—all among many others.
