Mark Lane compared investigating the JFK assassination like Frankenstein unleashed the monster. Joan learned about the MOSSAD researching the attack on the USS Liberty by Israel. In time, Joan was befriended by New Orleans Police Intelligence Police Officer, Robert Buras Robert Buras denied permission to interview Psychiatrist Dr. Frank Silva & Patricia Orr in Baton Rouge. Because of Joan's tenacity & unbiased researching, Burriss nicknamed Joan ‘Sherlock’. Robert Kennedy & Walter Sheridan tried to hamper Jim Garrison’s investigation. Joan developed pneumonia walking the rainy streets of New Orleans with Robert Buras Explains the current & historic definition of Catfished after being hoodwinked on Facebook. These people with fake profiles are looking to take advantage of people financially. Joan's bank refused to transfer $15,000 US over the phone to someone she’d never met. If you've been Catfished, the FBI has an online for you to fill out to explain the particulars. Do not give MONEY to ANYONE you meet online. Do not become EMOTIONALLY invested. Older women are targeted because they tend to be lonely & have more money than younger women. The person trying to take advantage of Joan was plagiarizing text from an article in Atlantic magazine. One of Joan's students once plagiarized the film Fight Club. His classmates quickly exposed his lies. The life of a writer is hard, dealing with bad reviews & many rejections. It disturbs Joan that RFK Jr. hasn't contacted her about RFK's involvement in Garrison's investigation. Joan was threatened with bodily harm by Roger Stone if Joan attended the conference in Louisiana. Joan contacted the FBI about Roger Stone's threat of bodily harm, so it would be documented. Despite threats, Joan presented at the Jim Garrison conference, with Garrison's sons in attendance. Joan notes the lack of footnotes in Stone's The Man Who Killed Kennedy, The Case Against LBJ. Luckily for Joan, the FBI sent her an unredacted copy of their file on Mac Wallace. Mac Wallace's FBI file was the foundation for Joan's book Faustian Bargains. Joan talks about the time she went to interview Gerald Patrick Hemming. Hemming told Joan that the only person he was afraid of was Bernie. Who is Bernie?

Episode 175 is the first in a mini series covering Dean A. Andrews, Jr. the flamboyant jive talking New Orleans attorney that is so aptly portrayed by John Candy in the movie JFK.   Andrews, sick in a hospital bed, received a phone call  the  day after President Kennedy was assassinated.  The mysterious caller who identified himself as Clay Bertrand asked Andrews if he would go to Dallas and represent Lee Harvey Oswald in the murder case related to the assassination.  Oswald was murdered the next day making his representation moot. Bertrand never surfaced again. Coincidentally, Andrews had interacted with Oswald in the summer of 1963 after Oswald had come to him for legal help associated with his marine corp discharge status, his own citizenship status and that of his wife Marina. Andrews would relay this strange call to the  FBI and the Secret Service on the Monday following the assassination and the inquiry was swift but Bertrand could not be identified or located. The matter was investigated but  was dropped by the authorities until Jim Garrison and his team ran across the reference to Dean Andrews in the Warren Report as Garrison's investigation of the Kennedy assassination was resurrected during late 1966.  While Dean Andrews was a friend of Garrison's and an assistant D.A. as well in nearby Jefferson parish, Garrison soon became convinced that Clay Bertrand was really Clay Shaw, a prominent local new Orleans businessman.  Despite extensive prodding, Dean Andrews refused to identify Clay Shaw as the Clay Bertrand who called Andrews the day after the assassination.  Andrews was called to testify in 1967 before the Orleans Grand Jury and his refusal to identify Clay Shaw along with his material inconsistency of testimony under oath...when compared to his Warren Commission testimony taken under oath, ultimately rewarded him with 11 counts of perjury. Some people say that he was the lynch pin of the case against Clay Shaw but ironically he ended up as a called witness for the defense. Was he telling the truth when Garrison claims that stated he would be a dead man if he made the connection under oath...or did he make the name up from the very beginning in a quest to chase fame and fortune. Come listen to another gripping set of episodes in this new mini-series covering one of the most fascinating and important characters in the story of the JFK assassination, Jim Garrison's  investigation and the Clay Shaw Trial. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over  the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it,  were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This  real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as  we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

Episode 173  is the story of the 2nd polygraph test taken by Perry Russo. Jim Garrison and his team, concerned that the results of the first polygraph test administered to Perry Russo would be made public on national television as part of Walter Sheridan's NBC White Paper documentary, scrambled to have a second polygraph administered that would reinforce the veracity and confirm the truth of Perry Russo's statements to be made at trial.  More specifically, that Russo was present at the assassination plot party which took place at David Ferrie's apartment  which was an event that Clay Shaw was present for and participated in...and that a man named Leon Oswald was present and that is one and the same as Lee Harvey Oswald. Oh, and that Clem Bertrand is one and the same as Clay Shaw.  Unfortunately, the test was cut short and it led to a private conversation between Russo and Ed O'Donnell the polygraph operator and a sergeant on the New Orleans police force.  O'Donnell would tell Garrison and members of his staff what Russo had privately relayed to O'Donnell after the polygraph machine was turned off....that Russo could not definitively say that  Clay Shaw had been at the party that night and participated in the assassination  meeting.  Later,  O'Donnell would make the decision to reveal this information publicly going against Garrison as Garrison ignored what O'Donnell had revealed to him about the conversation with Russo.  Several weeks into the Clay Shaw trial, O'Donnell would make the decision to  testify on behalf of the defense, an unusual matriculation of events in the case.  Some critics say that O'Donnell was a foe of Garrison's and that impacted what happened here. Others say it was just one more example of Garrison's disregard for the truth in his quest to bring the case to trial. Wrapping-up the previous programming season, Doing Business in New Orleans, we present the story of Clay Shaw. On March 1, 1967, New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison arrested him on conspiracy charges. Shaw was a beloved, successful, local businessman, and closeted queer man. On January 29, 1969, Garrison tried Shaw in Orleans Parish Criminal Court on three conspiracy charges. A little over a month later the jury took less than one hour to acquit Shaw. After, “…jurors expressed their bewilderment as to motive. Respectable socialite Clay Shaw, it strained credulity as to why he would become involved in the murder of the President. Jim Garrison believed that Shaw was acting as Oswald's shepherd in New Orleans, under instructions from CIA. But he couldn't prove it, certainly not beyond a reasonable doubt.” —Joan Mellen. Many theories swirl around these, now infamous, Big Easy characters. Both Shaw and Garrison. This reading strives to represent the man who was Clay Shaw and, to a lesser extend, who was Garrison. Robert Valley reads as the voice of Shaw, David Zalkind is Jim Garrison. Audio production is by Steve Chyzyk, Sonic Canvas Studio. PHOTO: 1956. Clay Shaw dressed for Mardi Gras. From the director of RFK Must Die, Killing Oswald explores the mystery of how and why John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald were assassinated in 1963, tracing Oswald's strange transformation from US Marine radar operator in Japan, monitoring U2 spy planes over Russia; to 20-year-old Marxist defector, decamping to Moscow threatening to share military secrets with the KGB; to pro-Castro activist in New Orleans and self-proclaimed patsy in Dallas.  The film features interviews with authors John Newman, Dick Russell, David Kaiser and Joan Mellen, Cuban exile Antonio Veciana and Watergate burglar Eugenio Martinez; alongside rare archive film and audiotapes of Oswald and his alleged CIA handlers George De Mohrenschildt and David Atlee Phillips.  "Killing Oswald sifts through the [secret files] made public after Oliver Stone's JFK and raises compelling new questions about the whole affair" - The Guardian  "This excellent documentary from Shane O'Sullivan benefits from the richness of the archive material it has unearthed and from some intriguing testimony by well-informed 'experts'" - The Independent (4 stars)  "Killing Oswald raises questions that I haven't seen consolidated like this before, via several experts and remarkable archival footage. It's a very good documentary, and I recommend it highly" – contributor Dick Russell --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/art-mcdermott/support

Perhaps no president has a more ambiguous reputation than LBJ. A brilliant tactician, he maneuvered colleagues and turned bills into law better than anyone. But he was trailed by a legacy of underhanded dealings, from his “stolen” Senate election in 1948 to kickbacks he artfully concealed from deals engineered with Texas wheeler-dealer Billie Sol Estes and defense contractors like his longtime supporter Brown & Root. On the verge of investigation, Johnson was reprieved when he became president upon JFK's assassination. Among the remaining mysteries has been LBJ's relationship to Mac Wallace who, in 1951, shot a Texas man having an affair with LBJ's loose-cannon sister Josefa, also Wallace's lover. When arrested, Wallace cooly said "I work for Johnson…I need to get back to Washington." Charged with murder, he was overnight defended by LBJ's powerful lawyer John Cofer, and though convicted, amazingly received a suspended sentence. He then got high-security clearance from LBJ friend and defense contractor D.H. Byrd, which the Office of Naval Intelligence tried to revoke for 11 years without success.Using crucial Life magazine and Naval Intelligence files and the unredacted FBI files on Mac Wallace, never before utilized by others, investigative writer Joan Mellen skillfully connects these two disparate Texas lives and lends stark credence to the dark side of Lyndon Johnson that has largely gone unsubstantiated. On June 8, 1967, the USS Liberty, an unarmed intelligence ship reporting to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the auspices of the National Security Agency, was positioned in international waters off the coast of Egypt when it was attacked with deadly violence by unmarked jet planes firing rockets and machine guns and throwing napalm onto its deck. This ambush was followed by a torpedo strike that blew a forty-foot hole in the starboard side of the ship. Lacking the capacity to defend themselves, thirty-four sailors were killed and 174 wounded, many for life. By the end of the day, Israel had confessed to having been the aggressor, simultaneously arguing that the attack had been an "accident" and a "mistake." The facts said otherwise. So intense and sustained was the attack - it lasted for nearly an hour and a half - so specific was the aiming for the antennae and satellite dish on deck, that it was scarcely credible that Israel's aggression was not deliberate; such was the view of Marshall Carter, the director of the National Security Agency, his deputy director Louis Tordella, and Richard Helms, the Director of Central Intelligence. Based on interviews with more than forty survivors, knowledgeable political insiders, and Soviet archives of the period, investigative writer Joan Mellen presents evidence suggesting complicity between US and Israeli intelligence in the attack on Liberty and the more than fifty-year long cover-up. What were the underlying motives? Was this a false flag operation conducted in the midst of the Six-Day War? Was it conceivable that Israel would have initiated such an operation without a green light from the United States? For the sake of justice, truth and the murdered and surviving sailors, this is a story demanding to be told. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Author and former Temple University professor, Joan Mellen, has written over twenty-two books. Her newest work, "Blood in the Water" argues that US President Lyndon Baines Johnson ordered a hit on his own naval ship, even the USS Liberty - a US "spy ship" (an auxiliary intelligence research ship). In international waters, during the 6-Day War, the boat was attacked by Israeli forces. It is considered the boat was mistaken for an Egyptian vessel. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iantrottier/support
