When we're chatting to Dom Burke, Behaviour Officer at Dogs Trust about the Charity's advice for dog owners wanting to travel safely and responsibly on trains with their dogs. New research, from Trainline, has found 11% of people in the UK now travel to work with their four-legged friend, rising to 20% among Gen Z. Reasons for this include relaxed attitudes towards dogs in workplaces, the high cost of dog care, and the rise of hybrid working.Two-thirds of people say their dog dictates their travel habits. Almost a quarter (24%) of people now make daily journeys with their dog, with almost half (48%) doing so several times a week.Despite this, many owners admit they don't feel completely confident about how to travel by train with their pets due to a lack of clear guidance. The report has found 55% of dog owners would travel more if they had better advice on how to keep their pets safe and comfortable on a train, with the safety of their dog, fear of annoying other passengers and worries about dog mess among their top concerns.Dogs Trust, in partnership with trainline.com, is offering advice on the key skills to train your dog to make for smooth train travel, and highlighting why teaching your dog to enjoy the experience covers all the basics for socialising your dog. From polite meeting and greeting of lots of different people, settling for the journey, walking to heel, toileting on a cue, leaving bits of food that might be on the platform, coping with the sights, sounds and smells and much more. Join thousands of other listeners on our Substack, The Foodletter! In this episode of That Was Delicious, Brooke continues her two-part series on answering the most commonly asked questions about traveling in Italy. She shares practical insights on Italian dining etiquette, tipping culture, how to find the best non-touristy restaurants, and transportation tips. Brooke also dives into cultural nuances, shopping recommendations, and essential travel advice to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience in Italy. Whether you're planning your first trip or are a seasoned traveler, this episode is packed with valuable takeaways to enhance your journey. Key Takeaways [02:10] Dining Etiquette & Coperto (Cover Charge) Restaurants in Italy often charge a "coperto," a small fee covering bread, utensils, and service. It typically ranges from 1–3 euros but can be higher in major cities. Even if you don't eat the bread, you'll still be charged. [03:14] Meal Times & Restaurant Culture Italians eat dinner much later than in the U.S., typically starting at 7 PM or later. Pizzerias and bakeries can be great options for early meals or snacks when restaurants are closed. [10:44] Tipping in Italy Unlike the U.S., tipping is not expected but is appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving 1–2 euros per person is customary. Cash tips are preferred, as most card machines do not include a tip option. [07:55] Interacting with Waitstaff Servers in Italy will not check in frequently like in the U.S. To get a waiter's attention, simply make eye contact or raise a hand instead of expecting them to anticipate your needs. [14:38] How to Find the Best Restaurants Ask locals, including Airbnb hosts, hotel concierges, and taxi drivers. Use AI tools like ChatGPT to find non-touristy dining options. Check out Female Foodie for curated food guides. [17:37] Cultural Norms & Common Mistakes Avoid ordering cappuccino after 11 AM—Italians typically drink it only in the morning. Bread is meant for dipping into sauces, not for snacking before a meal (this practice is called la scarpetta). Italians value slow, unrushed meals—don't expect quick service. [25:20] Transportation & Taxis Many buses now accept tap pay, making public transport more convenient. Always take a taxi from a designated taxi stand or have a restaurant call one—never accept rides from drivers approaching you. Apps like Trainline are great for booking train tickets in advance. [24:32] Shopping & VAT Refunds Great souvenirs include high-quality pasta, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and leather goods. VAT refunds are mainly worth pursuing for high-value purchases (e.g., luxury bags), not small items. [35:48] Using Credit Cards & Cash Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted, while American Express is less common. Always carry some euros in cash for small transactions and tipping. ATMs connected to banks are the safest places to withdraw cash. [31:39] Health & Travel Insurance Travel insurance can be helpful in case of medical issues or cancellations. Pharmacies in Italy are well-stocked and many pharmacists speak English. The emergency number in Italy is 112. Notable Quotes (05:10) “Italians don't eat in a rush. Meals are about presence and gratitude, not just the food itself.” (16:44) “You don't need to learn Italian, but a few key phrases—like ‘grazie' and ‘buongiorno'—go a long way.” (17:37) “Ordering a cappuccino after 11 AM might get you some looks—Italians believe dairy is for the morning!” (28:37) “Never, ever take a taxi from someone who approaches you at the airport. Always use official taxi stands.” Resources Alessandro Frassica: Florence's Best Panino & The Story Behind Ino How To Win At Travel With The Points Guy, @BrianKelly Follow Female Foodie on Instagram
Join thousands of other listeners on our Substack, The Foodletter! In this episode of That Was Delicious, host Brooke Eliason kicks off a multi-week series dedicated to all things Italy. She dives deep into the most frequently asked questions about traveling to Italy, offering valuable insights from her years of experience leading Female Foodie Tours. From the best time to visit and how to navigate transportation to must-visit locations and food recommendations, Brooke shares everything you need to plan an unforgettable trip. Whether you're joining one of her tours or venturing out on your own, this episode is packed with essential travel tips to help you explore Italy with confidence. Key Takeaways [10:10] Best Time to Visit Italy – If possible, avoid peak season (June-August). Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer better weather, fewer crowds, and easier reservations. Winter can be magical, especially in cities like Venice and Rome. [13:00] How Long to Stay – A week is good, but two to three weeks allow for deeper exploration. Don't try to cram too many cities into a short trip. [17:00] Transportation Tips – Trains are the easiest way to get around, using Trainline.com for bookings. Renting a car is best for remote areas but can be challenging for first-time travelers. [33:32] Accommodation Advice – Booking hotels or Airbnbs early is recommended, especially in a busy year like 2025 (Jubilee Year). [34:59] Packing & Fashion – Italians dress well; avoid athleisure and opt for business casual styles. Comfortable shoes are a must due to extensive walking. “You won't find cheaper tickets anywhere else”: that is the remarkable pledge from rail retailer Trainline.A poster campaign outside one of the UK's busiest railway stations creates the impression that the market-leading ticketing firm is at least as cheap as other sources.

James & Paul interview Hannah Tickle, an experienced experimentation leader who's currently the Experimentation Team Lead at Trainline. The episode discusses the role of experimentation in ecommerce, the importance of ownership of within organisations, and the impact of hypotheses, testing speed, and data analysis. Hannah shares insights on building a culture of experimentation and the benefits of using a custom testing stack. She also touches on the challenges of incorporating user feedback and the importance of understanding the limitations of qualitative research. Takeaways: True experimentation is essential for ecommerce businesses to improve strategic planning and prioritise product development. Experimentation should be centralised to ensure accessibility and consistency. Strong hypotheses are data-backed and focus on testing concepts rather than specific things. Testing should be fast, light, and big, with a focus on impactful changes rather than small tweaks. Understanding and analysing data is crucial for effective experimentation, and it's important to consider both quantitative and qualitative feedback. Building a culture of experimentation requires consistency, responsiveness, and support from senior leadership.

The Sunset Limited, Westbound - Fly or take the Amtrak? The journey or the destination? Taking the slow train to Tucson just felt right. You know when your whole body craves a more gentle, almost human tempo to carry you onto the next place? So, whilst keen to get to the wide open desert, the opportunity to stretch out the journey, savour the changing landscape through Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, and have time to meet my fellow passengers was too much of a pull. In Episode 3 we follow the lowlines of the train tracks and the hiss, groan and gentle gyrations of the 36 hour journey as I talk off-grid living, denture cream woes, magic mushrooms and marrying the same man three times with a raft of fellow travellers - all while trying to get a decent bite to eat and a bit of shut eye.CreditsFeaturing the voices of the King Brothers (Matt, Lenny, Lee and Bobby), Maria-Luisa Aguilar, Meredith, Brad, Konnor Broussard, the burrito lady on the platform in El Paso, Jackie in the cafeteria and Dwayne the conductorProduced by Lucia Scazzocchio of Social Broadcasts, Executive-Produced by Lina Prestwood of Scenery Studios, Mixing & Mastering: Jobina TinnemansMusic by Hannah Marshall with featured music via YouTube courtesy of Ry Cooder and Bobby KingTo go deeper into this episode head to low-lines.com

In this episode, join host Jason Foster as he sits down with Mike Hyde, Chief Data Officer at Trainline. Together, they delve into the fascinating world of using data and artificial intelligence to revolutionise the rail travel experience. Mike underscores the critical need for the rail industry to understand customers deeply—analyzing travel patterns, desires, and behaviours. Discover how Trainline is navigating the complexities of the rail industry, simplifying the journey for passengers, and leveraging cutting-edge AI to shape the future of rail travel.
At a time when we're all looking for environmentally friendly yet efficient travel, the railway industry is booming with popularity and investment. Our tech leader this week, Milena Nikolic is at the forefront of this sector. As CTO at Trainline, she is leading the team at one of the largest companies operating in this area. Milena joins Gareth to discuss her journey towards becoming a tech leader; from competing in coding competitions in Serbia to securing an internship at tech giant Google. Despite never initially being drawn to a leadership position, after being a part of Google's immense growth period, Milena noticed that any problems they were facing were due to people, not technology. This want to incite change in Google's company culture led to her becoming an Engineering Manager before ultimately being promoted to Engineering Director within her 12 years at the tech giant. Now as the CTO of Trainline, Milena discusses her role in one of the largest sectors across the globe, ensuring that she drives her team through goal setting, trusting the process, and being able to take things one step at a time. Time stamps What does good leadership mean to Milena? (03:37) Climbing the ranks at Google (04:55) What Milena would change about her time at Google (08:37) Google's innovation initiative (11:04) The key to successful delegation (12:55) Milena's backstory (15:05) Transitioning to Trainline (17:40) Transforming Trainline with AI (26:00) What does a CTO do? À quoi spécifiquement trinque-t-on ?
