TOM JOHNSTON THE DOOBIE BROTHERS ‘THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 15 INTERVIEWED FEBRUARY 17TH 2013   The Doobie Brothers are one of those bands that we've depended on, year after year, and expect to see performing invariably at outdoor music festivals, pavilions, arenas, casinos and bike week events across the nation. The group has been exhilarating audiences for decades yet appear timeless onstage. One of the principal reasons for the longevity and success of the Doobie Brothers has a lot to do with an unmitigated affection shared between the band and its audience. It's been an amazing love affair that has persevered for over forty-two years. When the Doobie Brothers finally call it quits … rock ‘n' roll will probably call it quits too.  Tom Johnston is the voice, lyricist and guitarist on numerous classic hit recordings by the Doobie Brothers. Inspired by listening to R&B music on the radio, California native Johnston started his first band at 14, eventually broadening his musical horizons by singing with soul and blues groups. After moving to San Jose to finish college, Tom met Skip Spence, original drummer for the Jefferson Airplane. Spence introduced Johnston to drummer John Hartman. Spence was also a founding member of Moby Grape which had a major influence on the Doobie Brothers. Tom Johnston, John Hartman and bassist Greg Murphy formed the power trio “Pud.” When “Pud” unraveled, the evolution of the Doobie Brothers began to take shape. While living in a home dubbed as their “musical headquarters,” guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren joined the group. The band quickly generated a huge following in California. In 1971, the Doobie Brothers launched their self- titled debut album, The Doobie Brothers on the Warner Brothers label with legendary producers Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The first track on the album, “Nobody” penned by Tom Johnston, would later resurface in 2010 on their latest release, World Gone Crazy. Their second studio album Toulouse Street (named for a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans) introduced new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack (Navy Veteran). The album spawned the Tom Johnston penned classic hits, “Listen to the Music” (#11 Top 100 Billboard Hit -1972), “Rockin' Down the Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright,” (#35 Billboard Top 100 Hit -1973) written by Arthur Reynolds (1965) and performed by The Byrds (1969). In 1973, the Doobie Brothers released, The Captain and Me spotlighting some of the bands most memorable classic rock tunes penned by Tom Johnston … “Long Train Runnin'”(#8 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and perhaps the bands anthem song, “China Grove” (#15 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The Captain and Me also featured a guest performance by future Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. The Doobie Brothers fourth studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits released in 1974 spawned the Tom Johnston penned songs, “Another Park, Another Sunday” (#32 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and “Eyes of Silver” (#52 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The album also featured Pat Simmons penned tribute to “The Big Easy,” “Black Water” (#1 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975). Stampede released in 1975 was the final album before Michael McDonald took over lead vocalist duties from an ailing Tom Johnston. The album featured the cover version, “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” (#11 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975) written by the Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Subsequent albums …Takin' It to the Streets (1976), Livin' on the Fault Line (1977), Minute by Minute (1978) and One Step Closer (1980) featured a successful second incarnation of the band, which primarily consisted of Michael McDonald(vocals, keyboards) Patrick Simmons (guitars/vocals) Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (guitars, steel guitars), Tiran Porter(bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums) and Keith Knudsen (drums). *Tom Johnston played and sang “Turn It Loose” and “Wheels of Fortune” on the album Takin' It to the Streets. John McFee was added to the Doobie Brothers lineup in 1979 replacing Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and was featured on One Step Closer. After a successful run, the band's signature sound and direction became disillusioned. While working on his solo project, Tom Johnston rejoined the band for a Farewell Tour, and then the Doobie Brothers would call it quits as a band for the next five years. The reformation of the Doobie Brothers was contrived when the band's alumni were asked by drummer Keith Knudsen to perform at a concert to benefit veterans' causes. The band discovered that tickets were in great demand and soon embarked on a twelve-city tour.   In 1989, Cycles, the tenth studio recording by the Doobie Brothers, now on Capitol Records, witnessed the return of Tom Johnston and drummer Michael Hossack to the studio as a band. Tom Johnston's distinctive vocals returned, and the band re-established their musical roots. Subsequent releases … Brotherhood (1991), Sibling Rivalry (2000) and World Gone Crazy (2010). World Gone Crazy was the Doobie Brothers highest charting album since 1989 receiving rave reviews and featuring the longtime core lineup of Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons. The Doobie Brothers band functions like a well-oiled machine, touring consistently year after year and enchanting music enthusiasts worldwide. The current lineup of Tom Johnston (vocals/guitar), Pat Simmons (vocals/guitars), John McFee (guitar/strings/vocals), John Cowan (bass), Guy Allison (keyboards/vocals), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums) and Tony Pia (drums)… represent a musical legacy that defines the quintessence of rock ‘n' roll and a band that we've always depended on throughout the years. The Doobie Brothers have sold more than 40-million albums worldwide. …So why aren't they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?   Tom Johnston and the Doobie Brothers will be performing live as part of the Bands, Brew & BBQ concert series at Busch Gardens in Tampa on Sunday, February 24th. THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On October 10, 34-year-old Robert Owens was found nearly naked and face down on a lawn in China Grove, North Carolina. He had last been seen by family two days earlier, but his body went unnoticed, even by a groundskeeper who mistook it for a police training dummy. Owens' family is seeking answers about his death, as police do not suspect foul play, despite defensive marks on his arms and missing personal belongings. Owens had a history of drug use, but it's unclear if this played a role. The family is frustrated with the police's handling of the case and is awaiting toxicology results to determine the cause of death, hoping for closure and justice. The case is still open and being investigated.SOURCES…Robert Paul Owens, All That's Interesting: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/ys6nkucmMurder Noir music provided by Alibi Music Library. = = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. A couple, apparently trying to avoid arrest on a warrant, faced two new criminal charges Feb. 23, by attempting to flee police. A chase began after China Grove police Lt. Esosa Ehanire tried to stop a white Nissan traveling northbound in the 1700 block of South Foster Road for having illegal window tint on its side windows. According to China Grove police Chief Ralph Sramek, the Nissan took off at a high rate of speed, sometimes driving on the wrong side of the road, and led Ehanire in pursuit onto Ambush Ridge and then onto Filibuster Trail in San Antonio....Article Link

Oh my Maria, was she the most beautiful girl in China Grove? Even though I was a bit of a ramblin' man, she still loves me like a rock. Whether I was off on that midnight train to Georgia, or on that Rocky Mountain way seeking higher ground, I always kept her photograph close to my heart. She stuck by me through my indiscretions, even those with that lady Angie. Somewhere in those travels, I began to appreciate the love I lost and realized that at home, I had been on the top of the world, close enough to be knockin' on heaven's door. This week we keep on truckin' and take a free ride through the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of November 3, 1973. Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr.,better known by his stage name, Dr. John, was a singer-songwriter who blended funk, R&B and New Orleans blues into a distinctive sound.   Dr. John was well known for his stage shows which were inspired by an eclectic mix of medicine shows, voodoo ceremonies, and Mardi Gras costumes.  Dr. John got his start as a session musician in the 1950s, and continued doing session work throughout his career playing keyboards for Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, and Van Morrison as a member of "The Wrecking Crew."  He recorded thirty studio albums and nine live albums before his death in 2019, including the one we profile today. In the Right Place is Dr. John's sixth album and his best selling one, peaking at number 24 on the Billboard 200 chart.  He is backed up on this album by The Meters, a New Orleans funk band that formed in 1965.  The Meters were the house band for Alan Toussaint, who produced, arranged, and played on a number of tracks on the album.Mac Rebennack's father ran an appliance shop in the East End of New Orleans where, in addition to fixing radios and televisions, he sold records to people from a wide variety of races and cultures.  Rebennack was expelled from his Catholic high school when the priests told him he had to either stop playing in the clubs or leave.  The stage name Dr. John was taken from a 19th-century Louisiana voodoo priest.  In turn, Dr. John would inspire two other characters - Johnny Fever (from "WKRP in Cincinnati") and Dr. Teeth (from "The Muppet Show").The future Dr. John started playing guitar and switched to piano after nearly losing a finger during an on-tour gunfight. It's time for some New Orleans funk as Wayne brings us this album for the podcast.  Friend of the show Sean Mooney joins us for this one. Traveling MoodYou can expect any rock group to eventually put out a song about losing a woman, but it takes Dr. John to make this tragedy whimsical and fun.  "Said that she'd never leave me, now she's gone away to grieve me.  I was fast asleep, when she begun her midnight creep."QualifiedThis is a social hierarchy song about a guy telling people who think they are better than others that they are not.  "Your social life ain't no better than my hot dog stand.  Your edu-ma-cation ain't no hipper than what you understand."Right Place, Wrong TimeThis is the funky hit that peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was also Dr. John's only top 40 hit, making him technically a one-hit wonder.   "I took the right road but I must have took a wrong turn."  "I took a right move, but I made it at the wrong time." Cold, Cold, ColdIn this song, the man wishes a woman he loves was not also running around with the other guys.  There's a pit of a Rolling Stones sound about this one, and maybe a little bit of Randy Newman humor. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Live and Let Die by Wings (from the motion picture “Live and Let Die”)This song was the theme which first introduced Roger Moore as James Bond.  It also reunited Paul McCartney with former Beatles producer George Martin. STAFF PICKS:Drift Away by Dobie GrayRob drifts into the staff picks with this song originally written by Mentor Williams in 1970, and first performed by swamp rock singer John Henry Kurtz.  Soul singer Dobie Gray would produce the rendition we would know best.  Gray would land at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making this song his biggest hit.  The lyrical tribute to the power of music would make it a frequent cover by lots of artists.Daniel by Elton JohnLynch features a song with a story.  Daniel is an American soldier injured in Vietnam who, though accepted by his family, receives criticism from the public due to the polarizing nature of that war.  Disillusioned by the response, Daniel decides to go away to Spain.  Almost all of this storyline was contained in the last verse of the song, which was cut before it was produced.China Grove by the Doobie Brothers Friend of the show Sean brings us a song which introduces itself with a great guitar riff and keyboards.  It is sung and written by Tom Johnson for the Doobie Brothers third studio album, "The Captain and Me."  It went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  While Johnson was writing about a fictional town, there are several towns called China Grove in America. The Free Electric Band by Albert HammondWayne closes out the staff picks with a prog rock hit.  Songwriter Hammond has written a number of hits over the years, though this particular one only went to number 48.  The lyrics are about a privileged child who decides to move to California to play music despite his parents higher expectations for him.   COMEDY TRACK:Back When My Hair Was Short by Gunhill RoadThis lone hit by Gunhill Road went to number 40, and was produced by Kenny Rogers.

The Gospel of God's One-Way Love can find an appealing, commodious platform within the Anglican tradition. This is because when that tradition is allowed to be fully itself -- historically, theologically, and even aesthetically -- it supports the Good News and pastorally embodies it. On the other hand, like any ancient tradition, 'Anglicanism' can become dry and even choking. When the tradition becomes an end rather than a means to an end -- a "thing" rather than a fountain -- then it can desiccate the very soil on which it was first planted. In this cast I tell something of my own Anglican story, which goes back to 1960. There is within it some of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly -- and when it comes to the Church of England, mostly the Good. If you're an Episcopalian, I hope you'll be encouraged. Mary's and my story within the Church is also quite funny (at least to me). Hope you'll laugh along. Incidentally, the opening music is the very first song my suite-mates played for me when I arrived at a C. of E. theological college in September 1973. It was counter-intuitive, to say the least. LUV U! P.S. The second song they played was... "China Grove" by the Doobie Brothers. (That one I knew.)
