A returning guest to Strength Chat, it was awesome to catch up with the Education Manager at JPS Health & Fitness, Martin Refalo. Martin puts some awesome content and information out there, completing research that answers a lot of the coaching questions of the health and fitness industry. In this episode we chatted about his current research on how training to failure can impact strength and muscle building, programming principles, and how information can be misinterpreted. In this very insightful interview, Martin Refalo and I discuss what it means to train “hard” for the goal of muscle hypertrophy; whether you need to train to complete muscular failure to maximise hypertrophy; and how to program failure to maximise its potential benefits and minimise potential downsides. Martin is a coach and Education Manager at JPS Health and Fitness in Melbourne, Australia. He's currently pursuing a PhD in Exercise Science and has recently authored a systematic review and meta-analysis on the influence of proximity to failure on muscle hypertrophy. Martin is keen to conduct research that can be translated into practical applications for lifters. In this episode, he delivers a wealth of evidence-based suggestions that you can start applying into your program as soon as you're done listening. In today's episode, 3DMJ coach and athlete Brian Minor and I aim to demystify the concept of progressive overload. Brian is a coach, educator, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and athlete, with a Master's Degree in Health and Exercise Science from Colorado State University. He's been coaching athletes for over a decade, with a primary focus on those interested in improving body composition, physique contest prep, and within the sport of powerlifting. Tune in to hear Brian's thoughts on what progressive overload is, what tools to use to track whether it's happening or not, how to choose a training program when you're starting out, how to change it as you become more advanced, how to tell when you're no longer a beginner, but rather an intermediate or advanced lifter… and much more than I could fit into this description! Jacob Schepis is a natural bodybuilder, powerlifter, and the founder of JPS Health and Fitness in Melbourne, Australia. We met when he hosted all of us 3DMJ Coaches at one of his facilities for a bodybuilding seminar in July of 2017. I wanted him on here to pick his brain about the personal training and coaching company he’s built and why I admire it so much. It blows me away how passionate and tuned-in he seems to be with all facets of the fitness industry while starting a new family and keeping his employees content without completely losing his shit. If you have ever wanted to own a gym or manage a staff, there are A LOT of nuggets in here for you to relate to or learn from.
