HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. While most people infected with HPV recover, certain strains can increase the risk of cervical and other cancers, including oral, anal, and head and neck. Dr. Deborah Money, head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of British Columbia, breaks down how HPV spreads and why sexually active people should consider getting vaccinated. For transcripts of The Dose, please visit: lnk.to/dose-transcripts. On Tuesday the Senate Finance Committee voted to move forward with Robert F Kennedy Jr.’s nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. His nomination now heads to the Senate floor, where he’s expected to be confirmed. As the secretary of the HHS, Kennedy would have oversight over 11 agencies including the FDA, the CDC and the National Institutes of Health. Kennedy has come under fire from both Democrats and Republicans for some of his controversial beliefs – the most contentious being his extensive history of anti-vaccine work and rhetoric. Kennedy has in particular focused on Gardasil, the HPV vaccine. A lawyer by trade, he has helped facilitate hundreds of potential lawsuits aimed at pharmaceutical company Merck, which manufactures the drug. The vaccine is nearly 100% effective against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus – most notably cervical cancer. Kennedy has criticized the vaccine, calling it ‘dangerous and defective’ and claiming it can ‘increase the risk of cervical cancer.’ Guest: Dr. Linda Eckert, a professor in the University of Washington School of Medicine, Women's Health Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The SpaceX rocket carries lunar landers from companies based in Texas and Japan. They could arrive at the moon in the coming months. HPV can cause a variety of cancers, including cervical. New mortality data for women under 25 point to the success of the HPV vaccine.Rocket Launches With Lunar Landers From 2 Private CompaniesOn Wednesday, a SpaceX rocket launched carrying payloads from two separate private companies hoping to achieve lunar landings. The pair of landers—one from Japanese company ispace, and one from Texas-based Firefly Aerospace—will take months to reach the moon. Firefly's lander is scheduled to arrive first, in March, with ispace's lander planned for a touchdown in late May or early June.Another SpaceX launch on Thursday, a test flight of the company's Starship system, had mixed results. The booster returned to earth and was successfully “caught,” but the spacecraft exploded over the Caribbean shortly after launch. That explosion is under investigation.Jason Dinh, climate editor at Atmos in Washington, D.C., joins Ira to talk about the Wednesday launch and plans for private lunar exploration. They also discuss other stories from the week in science, including the ban of Red Dye #3 an AI approach to snake antivenom, and a study predicting a rise in US dementia cases by 2060.As Cervical Cancer Deaths Plummet, Experts Credit HPV VaccineIn 2006, a vaccine for the human papillomavirus (HPV) became widely available to adolescents. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection, and it can cause cancers of the mouth, throat, and sexual organs. It's also the cause of nearly every case of cervical cancer. Now, almost 20 years after the HPV vaccine was introduced, a study published in JAMA noted a 62% drop in deaths due to cervical cancer in women under 25 in the US: from 50 or 60 deaths per year to 13. This follows earlier research that noted a decrease in cervical precancer and cancer since the introduction of the vaccine. With HPV vaccine uptake at about 60% for adolescents aged 13-15, a higher uptake could virtually eliminate cervical cancer, experts say. However, childhood vaccination rates have dwindled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, sparking concerns about the spread of preventable disease.Joining Flora Lichtman to talk about this latest study is lead author Dr. Ashish Deshmukh, professor of public health sciences and co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Prevention of Cervical Cancer With the HPV Vaccine (YouTube Video 352) There are pro-vaccers and there are anti-vaccers. And that is pertinent to the fact that Cervical Cancer is one of the very few cancers for which we actually have a vaccine to prevent infection with the virus that causes it in the first place. Depending on whether you're a por-vaccer or an anti-vaccer, you may or may not view that as a good thing. Either way, you should listen to this podcast to get all the facts. Then you can lean whichever way is your way.

If you are considering getting the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, or having your teenager or young adult get it, you need to first understand why the vaccine was created in the first place, the risks involved with getting the vaccine (compared to the risk of contracting HPV) and how cervical cancer can be prevented through nutrition and lifestyle changes. These are exactly the things that Dr. Nathan Riley reviews on today's podcast. He offers insights for all of us on the financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies developing vaccines, the dangerous side effects of the HPV vaccine, in particular, and what he has learned about the risks and outcomes for those who do get the HPV vaccine and for those who do not. Mary Holland takes center stage to discuss her extensive involvement in vaccine-related matters alongside her collaborator Kim Mack Rosenberg. Having delved into these concerns long before the release of their book: HPV Vaccine on Trial: Seeking Justice for a Generation Betrayed. Mary's legal perspective uncovers a significant facet of the vaccine landscape. Notably, the pharmaceutical corporations behind vaccine production seemingly enjoy minimal liability, primarily due to a government compensation program and restricted avenues for civil court recourse. Shedding light on the potential risks of medical interventions, particularly vaccines, which hold the potential for injury and even death. Kim functions as a lawyer and holds the position of acting general counsel at Children's Health Defense, a non-profit organization with the core objective of safeguarding the progressively vulnerable health and rights of children and other individuals. Alongside this role, she manages a personal law practice that specializes in addressing insurance-related challenges confronted by families dealing with individuals on the autism spectrum disorder and medical service providers catering to those with ASD. She has contributed as a co-author for HPV Vaccine On Trial, served as a co-editor and chapter author for Vaccine Epidemic, and penned The Parent's Autism Sourcebook.Visit the show notes for more.Learn More & Connect with Mary Holland, J.D.:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterLearn More & Connect with Kim Mack Rosenberg, J.D.:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterInstagramReferences related to Mary and Kim's work:The book: “The HPV Vaccine on Trial: Seeking Justice for a Generation Betrayed”The Book: “Turtles All the Way Down: Vaccine Science and Myth”Podcast on the book reviewVaccine Epidemic:Video: Safe, Affordable, Necessary, and Effective Vaccines and Vaccination PracticesChildren's Health Defense This episode was made possible by:AHCC - code BELOVED for 10% off on Immune IntelBIRTHFIT - code BELOVED to get one month...
We have learned so much about the natural progression of HPV induced cervical abnormalities. In 2019/2020, the ASCCP published its updated guidance using a “risk-based” algorithm for management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Traditionally, HPV vaccination was considered ineffective once cervical dysplasia already was present. But recent data has proven this concept incorrect! In this episode, we're going to summarize a brand new ACOG practice advisory released today, on July 28, 2023, related to this “adjuvant HPV vaccination” for patients undergoing treatment for CIN2 or more.
