What does art mean to you? Are you too hung up on 'what other people will think' to allow yourself to just be? In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to Australian author and illustrator Shaun Tan about these very topics. Shaun originally came on the podcast to discuss his latest book 'Creature' and then the conversation wove into something far deeper and expansive than either Shaun or Joe intended. Enjoy! About Shaun Tan Shaun Tan grew up in Perth and works as an artist, writer and film-maker in Melbourne. He is best known for illustrated books that deal with social and historical subjects through dream-like imagery, widely translated throughout the world and enjoyed by readers of all ages. Shaun is the recipient of an Academy Award for the short animated film The Lost Thing, the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in Sweden and the Kate Greenaway Medal in the UK. About 'Creature' From the creator of The Arrival, a collection of essays illuminating his thoughts and advice for writers and artists, young and old. Shaun Tan is one of the world's most highly acclaimed narrative artists—his stories and images are loved by countless young and not-so-young readers around the world. Drawing upon 25 years as a picture book and comics creator, painter, and film-maker, Creature explores the central obsession of this visionary artist, from casual doodles to studied oil-paintings. Beyond sketches for acclaimed works such as The Arrival, The Lost Thing, and Tales From Outer Suburbia, this volume collects together for the first time unseen and stand-alone illustrations, each resonant with unwritten tales of their own. Detailed commentary by the artist offers an entertaining insight into the endless allure of imaginary, non-human beings and what they might tell us about our so-called “normal” human selves. Artists, writers, students, dreamers, and anyone interested in the deeper undercurrents of creativity, myth, and visual metaphor will find inspiration in these pages.   Make sure to check out the NEW Dtalkspodcast.com website! We are thrilled to welcome award-winning children's book author and illustrator, Nadine Kaadan. Born in Syria and based out of London, her books have been published in several languages, reaching a worldwide audience of children. We caught up with Nadine in London last fall and we know you're going to find her as refreshing and inspiring as we do.Nadine champions empowered and inclusive representation in kids' books so that every child can see themselves in a story. Her work, as she describes it, was very dreamy and inspired by the ancient architecture of Damascus and its rich storytelling culture. But when the conflict in Syria erupted, it was reflected in her illustrations, and even the colour palette she used. She wrote her book ‘Tomorrow', which captured the attention of news outlets like CNN and BBC, to help Syrian children process the reality of civil war and work through post-conflict trauma. Her book ‘Jasmine Sneeze' shows children the beauty of Syria before the conflict. She has been featured in Marie Claire Arabia, nominated for a Kate Greenaway Medal, and is the 2019 winner of the Arab British Centre Award for Culture. Nadine was also selected as one of The BBC's 100 ‘most influential and inspiring' Women of 2020 and was featured in their BCC 100 Women Masterclass.Follow Nadine on Instagram at @nadine_kaadan and purchase her children's books here.More than a podcast, join our community at Millie.ca and @themilliecommunity.

Helen Oxenbury is an illustrator of children’s books whose work has featured in many very popular titles for younger readers including the award-winning We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen. Helen has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Book Trust in 2018. She attended the Ipswich School of Art and later the Central School of Art in London where she met fellow illustrator and her future husband, John Burningham. After the birth of her children she began illustrating children’s books, working at the kitchen table long after they’d gone to bed. Her work for Ivor Cutler’s Meal One, published in 1971, was praised by Spare Rib magazine for its portrayal of a single mother and her relationship with her young son. Helen came up with the idea of her baby board books in the late 1970s after the birth of her third child who suffered with eczema. Discovering that her daughter could be distracted from scratching by looking at baby catalogues, Helen created a series of board books placing babies and toddlers at their heart. Such a concept was unheard of at the time. From the late 1980s, Helen ensured that the babies and children featured in her books came from different ethnic backgrounds and her work in So Much by Trish Cooke has become a children’s classic. In We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, published in 1989, Helen’s pictures celebrated the joy of adventure and the bond between siblings. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley

The CILIP Carnegie Medal, and CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal are the most prestigious prizes for literature for children and young people. Both winners were announced today and are on tonight's Front Row. Elizabeth Acevedo’s Carnegie-winning novel tells the story of Xiomara, a Dominican-American girl growing up modern-day Harlem. Elizabeth explains why she chose to unfold the story of The Poet X in a long series of short lyrics. The Lost Words, for which illustrator Jackie Morris has won the Kate Greenaway Medal, is also a poetry book. It's her collaboration with writer Robert Macfarlane, inspired by the words left out of a new children’s dictionary, words such as bluebell and acorn. Jackie tells Stig how she approached illustrating the poems with three very different images, but of the same subject. As we head into the final weeks of this year’s prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year competition, Front Row begins looking at the five shortlisted institutions vying for the top prize of £100,000. Today it’s the turn of Nottingham Contemporary, and its director Sam Thorne joins Stig to explain why he believes Nottingham Contemporary would be a worthy winner. It was the success of the Yorkshire-born sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth that contributed to the UK’s largest county becoming the pre-eminent destination for sculpture. As the opening of the inaugural Yorkshire Sculpture International draws near, Andrew Bonacina, chief curator at The Hepworth Wakefield, and Jan Dalley, arts editor of the Financial Times, discuss how sculpture has evolved since the heyday of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Michael Berkeley's guest is the best-selling author, illustrator, and Children's Laureate Lauren Child. I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato; I Am Too Absolutely Small for School; I Am Not Sleepy and Will Not Go to Bed - these are just three of Lauren Child's bestselling, funny and touching picture books for young children. Her big-eyed characters such as Charlie and Lola, and Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton-Trent, capture the way children negotiate the small but significant challenges of family life, school and growing up. And they're illustrated with Lauren's trademark collages of her drawings and paintings, magazine cuttings, fabrics and photographs. But she writes for older children too - novels featuring the feisty Clarice Bean and, most recently, Ruby Redfort, who has to juggle her mundane life at school with being a top international secret agent and expert code-breaker. The winner of numerous awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal and multiple Smarties Prizes, Lauren Child has been Britain's Children's Laureate since 2017. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Lauren talks about the struggle she faced in her twenties to find direction in life, the challenge and joy of adopting her daughter from Mongolia, and why she can't work unless she's feeling melancholy. She chooses a Mongolian long song for her daughter; music by Satie that conjures up her own childhood; and music by Puccini and Vivaldi used in films that had a huge impact on the development of her imagination. One of her most loved, Dogger, the tale of a beloved toy dog lost and found, has its 40th anniversary this year. The winner of numerous awards, she recently received a CBE for services to literature. Shirley chooses music by Scriabin, Mozart, Beethoven and the Beatles - who remind her of her roots in Liverpool and share her love of storytelling.
