Traditionally, August has been the time for Britons to head off to the seaside for their annual holiday. This week's episode celebrates this custom and causes me to reconsider the momentous moment when I saw the sea for the first time.   Journal entry:23rd August, Friday“All night the winds blew; Battering and hooliganing Around the boat. Perhaps that's why I woke In a disquieted mood.I stand on the bank And feel my feet set squarely On the towpath. Each morning, a raven rows his way Across the sky, from east to west.” Episode Information:In this episode I read Mind Shamble's poem ‘Over Steam (Spring 2021)' and read excerpts from John Betjeman's poems, ‘Seaside Golf', ‘Trebetherick', and ‘Greenaway.' This week, my guest Jon Greenaway (The Horror Vanguard) and I delve into the intricate layers of Bong Joon-ho's film "The Host," appreciating its masterful storytelling and character analysis of Gang-du. We explore the film's blend of comedy and seriousness, praising its tonal shifts and expert composition for a captivating cinematic experience. Drawing from filmmakers like Scorsese and Carpenter, we admire how Bong Joon-ho combines action, tone shifts, and social commentary. The discussion touches on the film's themes of political protest, societal disillusionment, and the central importance of family in Bong Joon-ho's work. We reflect on the symbolic significance of shared meals and familial unity, challenging conventional storytelling methods and highlighting the power of metaphor in critiquing societal norms. Reflecting on anti-capitalist themes and individual agency within systemic structures, we contemplate the potential for change through acts of resistance and solidarity in a complex world.Jon Greenaway:WebsiteCapitalism: A Horror Story: Gothic Marxism and the Dark Side of the Radical ImaginationInstagramTwitterLeft of the Projector Linkshttps://www.patreon.com/LeftoftheProjectorPodhttps://boxd.it/5T9O1https://leftoftheprojector.comhttps://instagram.com/leftoftheprojectorpodhttp://tiktok.com/@leftoftheprojectorpodhttps://www.threads.net/@leftoftheprojectorpod

We touch in the centrality of his work to the national and cultural identities of so many countries: Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Russia; its aesthetic beauty and its continuing power. Certain filmmakers continuously crop up in relation to Parajanov's work -- Eisenstein, Jarman, Greenaway, Pasolini, Kenneth Anger, Powell and Pressburger. The conversation is bounded by the war in Ukraine; post-colonial relations; the excitement of cinema poetry, the need to archive, preserve, restore and circulate; questions of anarchy in totalitarian context; and a fluid line of different degrees of queerness that runs across Parajanov's oeuvre. Beautifully restored versions of SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS and THE COLOUR OF POMEGRANATES will be screened at Cinema Rediscovered, Watershed, Bristol on July 28th.

In this episode, Ralph and Owen journey into the spectral wastes of British film, asking: what went wrong, and what is to be done? Through kitchen sink realism, folk-horror spooks, socially-engaged documentarians, materially-inclined avant-gardism, and more than a handful of oddballs, the situation seems as underwhelming as it was in 1927, when Kenneth Macpherson opined that “it is no good pretending one has any feeling of hope about it”. Ninety-seven years later, is the landscape still as dispiriting – and why did ‘we' never get our own New Wave – and why are we still stuck in the kitchen sink? Through cash, ‘character', class, and capital, there's a lot to unpick. Regardless, the boys do their best to keep the aspidistra flying. Who do they discuss? Who don't they! But with ever-increasing wait times and a lack of funding, she's done something she never thought she'd do: go private. And as this care falls increasingly under threat in Canada, Kit Sparrow explains how Dr. Greenaway's clinic saved his life – even though he feels he should have never had to pay for it.

When one thinks of your typical horror movie and it's usual imagery, a number of tropes may come forward. Graveyards behind old cathedrals, crucifixes and holy water, possessions and exorcisms. The uniting thread of all of these is that they are all tied to the religious. One might then wonder if there is some underlying thread of meaning beneath the facade. Addressing this topic directly is Jonathan Greenaway in his book Theology, Horror and Fiction: A Reading of the Gothic Nineteenth Century (Bloomsbury, 2022). Surveying a number of well known works from this period, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the Bronte sisters all the way up to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Bram Stoker's Dracula, Greenaway finds works filled with various references and discussions of religious scripture, imagery and themes. What's more, he's able to follow these various occasions down into deeper territory, finding a subterranean conversation in much of this literature on themes of embodiment, createdness, epistemology, political institutions and ethical transgression. What Greenaway comes away with is insight into a dialogue between these two fields that will be richly rewarding to believers of both of them. Learn more about your ad choices. The last few years have seen several new restorations of the films of Peter Greenaway, the British director known for classics like The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. His films are formally exacting and erudite, yet full of play and perversion, and are as provocative today as they were upon release. The latest Greenaway film to receive a restoration is Drowning by Numbers, which has just been re-released by Severin Films on Blu-Ray. Made in 1988, the film is a metaphysical puzzle, equal parts fairy tale and process piece. The story follows three women—a mother, her daughter, and her niece—all named Cissie Colpitts, as they drown their husbands one by one. They cover up their crimes with the help of local coroner Madgett and his son Smut, both of whom are obsessed with games of all stripes—moral, athletic, mathematical. Shot by Greenaway's frequent collaborator Sacha Vierny, Drowning by Numbers is one of the best of the director's 80s features, as clinical as it is maximalist. A couple weeks ago, FC Co-Deputy Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute called up Greenaway on Zoom for a freewheeling conversation about his memories of making the film, his long career, and his thoughts on mortality and art.

In 2016, Auckland, New Zealand did something nearly unprecedented in the English-speaking world: It upzoned the majority of land in the city, and not just for three or four units per parcel. They went much further than that, and by one estimate increased the legal capacity for housing in the city by 300%. The goal of the reform, known as the Auckland Unitary Plan, was to increase production of multifamily housing and slow or stop rapidly rising housing prices. Did they succeed? Ryan Greenaway-McGrevy has published several studies on the results approximately five years later, and the news is quite good. We talk through the details of what Auckland did and the impact it had, and the lessons it holds for other cities considering (or hoping for) similar reforms. Taking Auckland's lead, New Zealand adopted even more aggressive housing reforms in 2021, and we discuss that too.

We'll be talking with our guest Shaun Greenaway, a male fertility advocate who was diagnosed with azoospermia due to having Mumps in his 20s. After having to go through invasive procedures whilst working for the Met Police, Shaun had to go down the donor conception route to have his family.
