Longtime Orlando Sentinel education reporter Leslie Postal joins the show to talk about what just happened in Florida. Show notes Both Politico Florida and the Associated Press have good roundups of the statewide results in School Board elections. Here are some of the stories we alluded to during the show: * Tolstoy, Sendak picture book among hundreds banned from Florida schools * Textbook authors told climate change references must be cut to get Florida's OK * Only one reviewer complained of ‘critical race theory' in Florida math textbooks* Schools Without Rules: An Orlando Sentinel Investigation * An inside look at the private interests shaping public education in FloridaQuestions or comments? The hosts offer an enlightening exploration of the seemingly simple 1963 children's book, uncovering its deeper meanings and themes, an invaluable reflection of children's emotions and their journey of taming these feelings.   Focusing on the journey of Max, the main protagonist of the story, they examine his dynamics with the various characters he encounters during his fantastical adventure. Despite its unconventional narrative and slow-paced arthouse approach, the hosts appreciate how the film offers a rich tapestry of emotions and ideas, enhancing the book's emotional heft and visual appeal. Concluding the conversation, they rate both the book and the film, acknowledging their profound impact and timeless appeal.   Embark on this thought-provoking journey into the realms of childhood, fantasy, and emotion as Ghezzi and Chawgo invite you to re-enter the world of 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Today I spoke with Dr. Louis Rothschild about his new book Rapprochement Between Fathers and Sons Breakdowns, Reunions, Potentialities (Karnac, 2024). Our conversation moved freely between theory, generational attitudes, thinkers, and personal vignettes. What is a good enough father? What is the difference between a man of achievement and a man of power? Who is the father of the mother's mind? What happens when a father enables holding? How is masculinity valued by other men? What is meant by phrases such as a “man's gotta do what a man's gotta do?” Why exactly do we need to “call the boy's father?” How is the father's role rendered invisible? These are some of the questions subsumed in the broader question of “Who nurtures and who is nurtured?” (And does the myth of the “self-made-man” indicate a man who exists without nurturing?) “What I'm arguing”, says Rothschild, “is that that sexist dichotomy is a mirage in its own right and that attachment strings needn't be severed. They can be reworked over the lifespan and this idea of having this clean tidy break and going off to live your life where liberating the kid from this regressive maternal bond is the path to individuation, I think that's just patently false.” Like an analyst, the book has been in formation for many years. “Percolating and distilling” as Dr. Rothschild says at the top of the interview. Motivated by the “way the culture was shifting” he sensed “that things I take for granted are actually a minority opinion.” Rothschild's survey of sons includes mythology; Oedipus scripture; Issac. As well as the sons of literature; Sendak's Max, Silverstein's Boy, White's Swan, and others. Affect rich case illustrations are also presented. The issues addressed in the book are the ones we are contending with in in analysis. They are the discussions we are having with our fathers, sons, and families. Rothschild's book is essential and meets the clinical moment. “Louis Rothschild's book is both an outstanding representative of ‘return to the father' and a unique explication of psychoanalytic thought on its own. This is a book of great literary elegance and impressive psychological wisdom.” Salman Akhtar, MD Christopher Russell, LP is a psychoanalyst in Chelsea, Manhattan. Dear Listener,Welcome to another episode of Explore and Draw.In each episode I'll take you with me on a walk, observing and commenting on the landscape around me. I'll find a place to draw and then share the finished sketch with you below.Today I drove across the Lizard peninsula to the Helford area, parked at Kestle Barton and made the muddy walk down to the woods just above Helford Village. My intention was to do a couple of things- record the audio of the woodland sounds for my upcoming Wildflower course and secondly record another episode for this podcast and sketch the trees. The weather was damp and branches were saturated with rain having had a heavy downpour during the night. Thankfully I brought my foldable stool with me so was able to pitch up on the path and laid out my pencils on the foldable mat. See the set up below- the pencils are in my handy Sendak pencil roll. The moss on the trees was such a bright green- it looked like it was on steroids! And here's the photo of the sketch I created on location. Thanks for joining me today. PS. For those who are interested my Wildflower sketching and illustration course will be opening for pre-sale on Monday- watch your inboxes for the announcement or check my Teachable courses page then.PPS. 1972- El escritor e ilustrador de libros infantiles, Maurice Sendak, famoso por su “Donde viven los monstruos”, continúa enfrentando la censura de su libro “La cocina de noche” -publicado en 1970- porque en algunas de sus ilustraciones Mike, el niño protagonista, aparece desnudo.

Golan discusses Sendak, the beloved author and illustrator of picture books, with sensitivity to the interplay between queer, Jewish, immigrant, and traumatic elements of Sendak's life and expressiveness. Golan shares poignant analysis of Sendak's career in the broader context of assimilation into dominant American society, the Holocaust, gay liberation, and the AIDS crisis. Golan is the author of Wild Visionary: Maurice Sendak in Queer Jewish Context.Golan draws from Kathryn Bond Stockton's concept of queer children "growing sideways" in his research and throughout the episode.Learn more at www.joyandconversationpodcast.comFollow Joy and Conversation on social media:Instagram- joyandconversationpodcastTwitter- @JandCPodcastFacebook- @JoyandConversationPodcastYouTube- Joy and ConversationEpisode Credits:Joy and Conversation is hosted by Dan OsbornMusic supervision, editing mixing, and mastering by Nico Rivers (www.nicoriversrecording.com)Graphics and Klezmer theme song by Alec Hutson (www.alechutson.com & www.warbirdcreative.com)Website design by Jakob Lazzaro (www.jakoblazzaro.com)This episode featured music from the Sephardic group, Voice of the Turtle (www.voiceoftheturtle.com)."En El Kamino De La 'Skola" from the album Under Aegean Moons: Music of the Spanish Jews of Rhodes and Salonika"Madres Amargadas" from the album Full Circle: Music of the Spanish Jews of Jerusalem"Minouche" from the album From the Shores of the Golden Horn: Music of the Spanish Jews of TurkeyThis episode featured music from Blue Dot Sessions (www.sessions.blue)."Borough" from the album Molerider"Capilla" from the album Castle Danger"Great Great Lengths" from the album The Baloonist"Trenton Channel" from the album Reflections"Arian Vale" from the album CauldronEpisode photo by Dan Osborn

The phrase the heroine’s journey immediately makes me think of Lou Reed’s Heroin recorded with the Velvet Underground. It’s not an uplifting song about putting a spike into one’s veins in order to feel like a man; but the song’s protagonist does take a journey wearing a cute sailor suit and cap. I picture him as Max in Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. Children’s stories – even those that say, “Let the wild rumpus start,” instead of, “Let the wild rumpus begin,” – are always a better starting place than injected addictives.Support the show (http://www.venmo.com/Jane-Taylor-70)

At last. After 93 episodes, Kate and Betsy have finally come face-to-face with the great Sendak masterpiece. Why did we decide to do the book today, rather than wait until we hit the 100th episode mark? Because, my friends, today is an auspicious day in and of itself. Today Fuse 8 n' Kate the podcast officially becomes a School Library Journal property. You won't see any changes on your end, but believe us, we've been cleaning up our act a bit. Our episodes, you may have noticed, are now a tight 30 minutes. We'll be having more guest stars as well, which should be fun. But for today's book, we finally hit the title that appeared at #1 on Betsy's Top 100 Picture Books poll, both times that she conducted it. Does it deserve its everlasting fame and glory? Find out for yourself as Kate and Betsy pick the darn thing apart. And believe us, there is a special kind of challenge in finding new things to say about this old chestnut. Show Notes: - Here is something Betsy wrote up when this book appeared as #1 on her poll: "In terms of the scary factor (which is to say, whether kids would end up traumatized by the book) Nordstrom has this to say on the subject: “I think this book can frighten only a neurotic child or a neurotic adult.”  Later in Dear Genius (the collection of her letters) there’s an amusing note from 1974 from Ursula to Sendak where she mentions that Fran Manushkin wants to know if Sendak will be changing the last word in the book.  Says Nordstrom, “As you know, new plates are being made and before the new edition comes out we wonder if you want to change the last word from ‘hot’ to ‘warm.’  I can’t for the life of me remember the history of all this but I believe we heard from a couple of children (or their rotten parents) that ‘and it was still warm’ would be better than ‘and it was still hot’ because children don’t like hot foot [sic]. Listen, have you ever had such great editorial comment in your life?” For some reason I like this little passage very very much, though “hot” is clearly the superior word." - Here is the 1983 CGI clip of the movie that was never made from this book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-EpaPsJe-c At one point I mention a great site called Terrible Yellow Eyes which solicited unique Wild Things art from a variety of different artists. After delving so deeply into problematic picture books in February, Kate and I deserve a bit of a rest. And what, I ask, could be more restful than carnivorous animals devouring small boys? Particularly when said lions are the product of the inimitable and never imitated Maurice Sendak. This marks Sendak's third appearance on the podcast, and the first time he's shown up with a book that wasn't associated with the Wild Things/In the Night Kitchen/Outside Over There triumvirate. In the course of things we uncover a conspiracy that involves Pierre's parents and the lion. I mean, this thing goes all the way to the top! We also debate whether or not the doctor is a vet or not. Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s picture book left an indelible mark on generations of kids, and Luke and James are among them. They begin this combo book/film episode by discussing their relationship with the original material, then talk about the text itself, drawing out new meaning from their now adult perspectives. Next, they move on to Spike Jonze’s documentary called “Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak” which deeply affected them both. Through it, they discuss the life and legacy of the Sendak, and what it means to find joy in creative work when all else fails. In the last half of the episode, Luke and James delve into Spike Jonze’s 2009 Film. Their talk turns from artistry and imagination to symbolism and hidden meanings, as well as the difficulties the performers faced in their suits and the pushback the director faced in making the film he ultimately wanted to create. This week on State of Wonder, Maurice Sendak goes to the opera, retro-tinged indie pop with Radiation City, darkness and light with photographer Holly Andres, and Snohetta's big plans for Portland's James Beard Market and Willamette Falls, and the Portland Ballet.Mauric Sendak Goes to the Opera - 0:00Maurice Sendak is beloved for his emotionally stormy and distinctive children’s books like "Where the Wild Things Are" and "In the Night Kitchen," but the Portland Opera is giving us a chance to appreciate his lesser-known work — as a passionate fan of and set designer for opera. The Portland Opera's general director, Christopher Mattaliano, worked with Sendak on his first opera, "The Magic Flute," in 1981 and is restaging it May 6-14 for the first time in over a decade. Mattaliano tells us about his friendship with Sendak and how the great artist simply loved opera.Radiation City - 7:30Local indie-pop band Radiation City's lineup was famous for featuring two couples...and infamous for its in-fighting. So when co-founders Lizzy Ellison and Cameron Spies finally split, it was an open question: could the show go on? Their new album, Synesthetica, charts calamity and a path out of it, adding a new level of polish and maturity to the band's signature take on retro-pop. Holly Andres - 15:08Photographer Holly Andres — who has shot for "Vanity Fair," the "New York Times," and other A-list clients — captures scenes packed with emotion, intrigue, and mystery. She has a show on view at Charles Hartman Fine Art in Portland called “The Fallen Fawn” (through May 28) about two young girls who discover an unexpected treasure. We dive into it with Tricia Hoffman, executive director of The Newspace Gallery (which currently has a show up featuring photography shot inside prisons), for another review in our "What Are You Looking At?" series.Snøhetta - 21:00Columnist-in-residence Randy Gragg takes us into the world of Snøhetta, an internationally-renowned architecture firm (think Times Square, the new SF Museum of Modern Art, and the Library of Alexandria) about to embark on two projects in Oregon: the James Beard Public Market in Portland, and the Willamette Falls Riverwalk in Oregon City. The first ever U.S. retrospective of the firm's work, "Snøhetta: People, Process, Projects," is on-view at the AIA Center for Architecture through June 30.The Portland Ballet - 31:10Oregon Art Beat recently profiled some big changes at the Portland Ballet, a ballet school in Hillsdale that seeks to bridge the gap between Balanchine and Queen (yes, as in "Bohemian Rhapsody") in their quest to train professional dancers. Their spring concert (May 6–7) features the Portland premiere of Trey McIntyre's Queen-fueled ballet, "Mercury Half-Life," alongside Balanchine and a world premiere from Portland's own Gregg Bielemeier.

When Maurice Sendak’s now classic children’s book In the Night Kitchen was released in 1970, it caused a scandal. Its protagonist, a young boy, is bare naked throughout the book, amidst a landscape phallic milk bottles and free-flowing liquids. Parents cried pornography. Armchair psychologists jumped to analyze its Freudian subtext. But the kids? They just laughed. In this Popcast, we play you excerpts from Sendak's 1970 conversation with legendary interviewer Studs Terkel. Sendak balks at the idea of writing down to kids. In fact, Sendak thinks it's the kids who have “crap detectors” that allow them to tap into the real spirit of his books. Together, Sendak and Studs consider that it's the adults who can’t understand children’s literature, and not the other way around.
