Lauren Weisberger, the New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada, talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her newest novel, Where the Grass is Green and the Girls Are Pretty. In Where the Grass is Green and the Girls Are Pretty, Peyton thinks she has it all as an anchor of a beloved morning show, with celebrity status and enough money for her family to enjoy life. Her daughter is bound for Princeton and ready to follow her filmmaking dreams. Peyton's sister, Skye, lives a modest life and longs to do more with her career. She is making great strides on a fundraiser and feels some fulfillment outside her role as a stay-at-home mother. One lie is all it takes to unravel the careful plans that they all have in place. Lauren channeled her close relationship with her sister as she wrote the novel. She talks about how far she was in her early draft before realizing she'd have to start over with a different approach, while hoping for the men characters to be nice guys instead of villains. She talks about her women characters and how their agency involves them making their own choices. They also discuss what's next for Lauren: in books and on stage. She's currently excited about the upcoming stage adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, which she's been working on with Kevin McCollum and Elton John, with Elton writing all the music. “The Producers” premiered on April 27, 2013. It was written by Becky Mode, whose last episode of Smash was season 2 episode 7, Musical Chairs, and was directed by Tricia Brock, whose last episode was season 2 episode 9, The Parents. The viewership dropped again by 20,000 viewers, to a total of 1.89 million. We had a lot of music this episode, mainly from Hit List! Our one song from Bombshell was an excerpt of Shaiman and Whitman’s “20th Century Fox Mambo” performed by Megan Hilty (and Kathie Lee Gifford?), and our one cover was Jeff Buckley’s “The Last Goodbye,” sung by Andy Mientus. The remainder of our songs come from Hit List: we hear excerpts from Pasek and Paul’s “Rewrite this Story,” and Joe Iconis’ “Broadway Here I Come.” Two new songs were another by Joe Iconis called “The Goodbye Song,” and “Don’t Let Me Know,” written by Lucie Silvas and Jamie Alexander Hartman. Without much competition for new musicals on Broadway this season, Bombshell is poised to make a splash at the Tony Awards in June. But with slow ticket sales, Eileen is going to have to pray for a miracle to keep Bombshell open til June. So she is whoring out Ivy for press events right and left, anything from the Today show to an appearance at the Brighton Beach Senior Center. Adding insult to injury, producers Daryl Roth and Kevin McCollum are duking it out with ten other producers ready to write a check to move Hit List to Broadway this season. But there may not be a show to move if Jimmy shows up late and high for photo calls. Derek attempts to solve the Jimmy problem by hiring former Bombshell ensemblist Sam Strickland to understudy him. Things are looking up for Julia, with the announcement her new non-musical version of Gatsby going to Manhattan Theatre Workshop next season. Now that Tom isn’t in line to direct the City of Angels revival, he wants Julia to create the show with him. The conflict comes to a head at one of Ivy’s many press events: Julia feels Tom told her under no uncertain terms he only wants to direct, while Tom believes Julia is only interested in being a writing partner when she gets her way. With tonight seeming to become the most important night in Hit List’s life, Derek gives Jimmy an ultimatum: shape up or ship out. But Jimmy doesn’t take the threat seriously, showing up late onstage, making up choreography and causing an onstage accident that leaves Karen with a bleeding gash. The performance is the last straw for Derek, firing Jimmy on the spot. But the journey for Hit List may be dead in the water anyway, as every potential investor is scared off because the show isn’t financially viable enough to make it on Broadway. It is such a pleasure to welcome three-time Tony winning Producer Kevin McCollum to our show! Kevin is well known in the industry for being the kind of producer that can spot something special miles--and years--away from being a fully formed product. This is the guys who, waaaaaaaaaay back in the early 90s saw a very early workshop of RENT and made a promise to Jonathan Larson--AT THE WORKSHOP'S INTERMISSION--that he would get the show to Broadway. In addition to a MILLION other shows, Kevin helped shepherd "In the Heights", "The Drowsy Chaperone", and "Something Rotten" to Broadway. He sat down with us to talk about his most recent productions--"Motown The Musical", which had a quick return to Broadway this summer--and "Something Rotten". And, yes, he indulged me in my "In The Heights" obsession and answered a few questions about 'discovering' Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Kevin McCollum is an American theatrical booking executive and producer of musical theater and plays, many on Broadway. During a producing career spanning over twenty-five years, he has received three Tony Awards for Best Musical for In the Heights, Avenue Q, and Rent. Other producing credits include Motown the Musical (Broadway and tour), The Drowsy Chaperone (five 2006 Tony Awards), Baz Luhrmann's La Bohème (two 2002 Tony Awards), the hit revival of West Side Story (2009), Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (2011), and [title of show] (2008). Listen in to this podcast to hear Producer Kevin McCollum talk about everything from . . . Why his formula for success is no formula at all. What Cameron Mackintosh said to him when Kevin auditioned for Les Miserables. Why raising money is still a lot of work, no matter how many shows you recoup. His simple advice for anyone looking to start producing today. His message for every politician in every small town in America. Thomas Schumacher talks with guests, Ben Cameron and Kevin McCollum, about the state of theatre today in a wide ranging conversation that highlights how theatre can survive during difficult economic times; whether celebrities can affect sales and audiences; and dealing with government and foundation funding.
Kevin McCollum talks about how his "contrarian" nature applies to his work as a producer, including mounting the 22-actor musical "In The Heights" Off-Broadway when many say even small musicals can't succeed off the Great White Way, deciding to send "Avenue Q" to Las Vegas rather than on a standard national tour, and creating a multi-city model for "Irving Berlin's White Christmas". Original air date – February 16, 2007.

Originally created as a skit for a bachelor party, The Drowsy Chaperone has traveled from Toronto to Los Angeles to Broadway, growing in size along the way without sacrificing its skewed view of classic musicals. This ATW Working in the Theatre seminar will explore Chaperone's journey from one-off entertainment into that rarest of musicals—one not based on a book, play or movie. The panel includes actor Edward Hibbert, producer Roy Miller and Tony winners Lisa Lambert (Best Score), actor Beth Leavel (Best Actress), author and actor Bob Martin (Best Book), producer Kevin McCollum (Tonys for Best Musical with Avenue Q and In The Heights), author Don McKellar (Best Book), composer/lyricist Greg Morrison (Best Score) and director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw.
