Doug Noll @DouglasNollPeacemaker reveals why explaining, fixing, or trying to be rational during conflict often makes things worse, and the simple skill that helps people calm down so real problem solving can begin. If you've ever watched a conversation spiral out of control despite your best efforts to stay logical, this episode will change how you think about conflict. Doug Noll, lawyer turned peacemaker and co-founder of the Prison of Peace Project, explains why traditional communication breaks down under pressure and how emotional precision can de-escalate even the most difficult situations. In This Episode, You'll Discover:• The one technique that works when emotions run high: identify and name what the other person is feeling so their nervous system can settle, and productive dialogue can begin.• Why Doug had to spend years unlearning aggressive trial lawyer habits that were effective in court but ineffective in conflict resolution.• The remarkable story behind the Prison of Peace Project and how Doug and Laurel Koffer trained maximum security inmates to become peacemakers who helped reduce violence inside prisons.• The power of ripple effect thinking and why true peacemakers focus on creating impact that reaches hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people over time.• Why conflict itself is not the problem. The real issue is how conflict is handled. When approached constructively, conflict can strengthen relationships and organizations.• What Doug learned about the limitations of litigation and why alternative dispute resolution often produces better outcomes.• Real-world proof that empathy and peacemaking skills work, even in some of the most challenging environments imaginable.• A preview of Doug's upcoming book, Empathy Leadership, which explores how executives and leaders can use these skills in organizations, boardrooms, and teams. If improving communication, reducing conflict, and becoming a more effective leader matter to you, this conversation is packed with practical insights from someone who has spent decades helping people navigate high-stakes disputes.About Doug NollDoug Noll is a lawyer turned peacemaker who specializes in helping leaders resolve conflicts where trust, relationships, and outcomes are on the line. We've never had more tools, resources, and mental health support…yet more people than ever feel overwhelmed, anxious, and stuck. So what's missing? In this episode of Still Listening, Stewart Iskowitz and Wendy Williams explore what might be the biggest misunderstanding in mental health—and why real change doesn't come from adding more strategies, but from seeing something deeper.Through their work with the New York Peace Project, they point to a powerful truth:peace isn't something you create—it's something you uncover.Instead of trying to fix people or solve problems at the surface level, their approach helps individuals reconnect to what's already within them—clarity, resilience, and an innate sense of well-being that has never been lost.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
What if the fastest way to calm conflict is not defending yourself, but helping the other person feel fully heard? In this episode of Sharkpreneur, Seth Greene interviews Douglas E. Noll, Lawyer-Turned-Peacemaker, who shares the powerful method behind his book De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less. Drawing from decades of experience in conflict resolution, neuroscience, and even prison mediation, Doug explains how emotional validation can calm anger faster than logic, rebuttals, or apologies. He also reveals how his work has helped everyone from families and couples to incarcerated individuals and why he believes these skills could help heal deep polarization in society. Key Takeaways:→ Naming emotions helps calm the mind and regain emotional self-control.→ One of the most effective ways to start de-escalating conflict is simply observing how the other person feels. → When emotions flare up, your brain shuts down, removing logic and problem-solving during heated moments. → Apologizing too soon can backfire because people need to feel heard and emotionally understood first.→ Incarcerated individuals have used this model to become mediators and peacemakers. Douglas E. Noll is an acclaimed author, speaker, and mediator. After 22 years as a trial lawyer, he shifted to peacemaking and conflict resolution, helping people settle deep, difficult disputes. Noll teaches Decision Making Under Uncertainty and Conflict as an adjunct professor at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, Straus Institute. He earned a law degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law and a Master's in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies from Fresno Pacific University. Noll co-founded the Prison of Peace Project, where he trained inmates to become peacemakers in maximum security prisons. Having mediated over 1,500 disputes, he has trained leaders and mediators around the world. Noll is the author of five books, including De-Escalate, and has developed popular online courses. He's also a jazz violinist, pilot, ski instructor, and tai chi master, living in the Sierra Nevada foothills with his wife. Connect With Doug:Website: https://dougnoll.com/podcast/seth-greene/

In this eye-opening episode, host Dr Bradley Block chats with Doug Noll, as he explains "affect labeling": simply reflecting emotions ("You're frustrated, worried, scared") to downshift the brain's limbic system and reactivate executive function. Backed by UCLA studies, this tool builds instant trust, makes visits efficient, and works on anyone, from ER patients to grocery clerks. Learn the 3-step process: ignore words for 90 seconds, read emotions innately, and reflect without "I understand." Doug shares role-plays, practice tips like labeling TV ads or silent shows, and why this flips arguments by meeting the universal need to be heard. Perfect for physicians facing high-stakes emotions, this episode equips you to listen people "into existence" for calmer, more connected care.Three Actionable Takeaways:Master Affect Labeling Basics: Ignore words for 90 seconds, read emotions instinctively (we're hardwired for it), and reflect with "You" statements like "You're frustrated, scared, confused." This downshifts the limbic system, calms patients fast, and builds trust by showing deep understanding without saying "I get it."Practice Everywhere for Real-World Skill: Label emotions in ads, silent TV scenes, or checkout chats to hone listening without words. Start with strangers ("You're excited your shift's ending?") to see shoulders drop and rapport build, proving it works beyond medicine, even in prisons or arguments.Flip Tension into Connection: In visits, label all fears upfront (pain, failure as parents) to deregulate emotions, then hype positively ("You're loving, doing everything right"). This meets the unmet need to be heard, ends escalations, and makes encounters efficient, enjoyable, and loyalty-building.About the Show:Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. If you're tired of dull medical lectures, tune in for real-world lessons we should have learned in med school!About the Guest:Doug Noll is a former civil trial lawyer turned award-winning mediator and peacemaker. He left a successful legal career to focus on resolving deep conflict and teaching de-escalation skills that actually work even in maximum-security prisons. Co-founder of the Prison of Peace Project, Doug has trained incarcerated individuals to become certified mediators, proving his methods succeed in the toughest environments. He is the author of the bestselling book De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less, which teaches a neuroscience-backed technique called affect labeling (reflecting emotions to instantly calm the brain), and offers the Advanced Emotional Competency online course.Website: dougnoll.comEmail: doug@dougnoll.comBook on Amazon : De-EscalateAbout the Host:Dr. Bradley Block – Dr. Bradley Block is a board-certified otolaryngologist at ENT and Allergy Associates in Garden City, NY. Deyva Arthur started the Street Peace Project to promote healing from the gun violence that has impacted her Lansingburgh neighborhood in Troy. Last year she created a Beacon where residents could write messages of peace. She has also compiled photographs of the various memorials for young people who have died from shootings. She gives an update on the project to Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

“Be Like Penny.” If you visit my current hometown of Cottonwood, Arizona, you'll see these three words displayed around town. Penny Smith was a friend to many and a living example of how everyday citizens can make a meaningful difference in their local communities. She passed away in 2021, but her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who know and love her, and also through The Penny Peace Project. In this episode, I'll introduce you to Julie Fernatt and Llama Habern, the founders of ROI (Rural Organizing Initiative). Thanks in large part to Penny's supportive efforts, in 2023, Cottonwood was a planned tour stop for a regional drag company. Evangelical religious leaders mobilized their communities to turn up in droves, and city council meetings became contentious, escalating to threats of violence toward city leaders and community members. That's when ROI and its partners organized a nonviolent response that effectively silenced right-wing agitators. Listen in to learn how they did it.ROI currently provides civic engagement and supports candidates for local and county offices. Julie & Llama share how community organizing clears channels of communication and helps to build lasting, non-partisan coalitions. We also discuss: running for local office, fundraising, and the upcoming No Kings protest.Local activism is accessible to all and with a little effort, we can all be more like Penny.Rural Organizing Initiative (ROI) is a 501(c)4 non-profit corporation operating in Northern Arizona. ROI promotes full participation in democracy by providing civic education and by supporting/coaching potential candidates for local and county offices. In Tbilisi, Georgia, a radical experiment in interfaith relations is taking place. The Peace Project is one of the world's first to bring a mosque, synagogue, church, and other places of worship together under one roof. Sounds of Muslim prayer, Shabbat services, and Georgian hymns fill the air as worshippers from different faiths mingle and break bread in the communal Hall of Abraham. The project is the brainchild of Malkhaz Songulashvili, a maverick Bishop of Georgia's Evangelical-Baptist Church, and is attracting attention from religious leaders around the world.

The latter became an annual event at The College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NYC, where Hallowell joined co-hosts Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Lori Beth Denberg, among others, to present a day-long inspirational event to high school and college students in the New York City area. During the same year, he founded Pathufind Media, an ongoing project that subcontracts affordable speakers to colleges and community groups. As a teen, Hallowell was offered a bi-weekly column on SHiNE.com, a non-profit and media outlet for American youths. This then led to a print and online column with Positive Teens Magazine in 2003. Also in 2003, Hallowell was selected to represent the United States at the World Bank's conference on youth development in Paris, France. Following this experience, he was honored by the International Youth Foundation with the YouthAction Net Fellowship. On the educational front, he was a Rhodes Scholar nominee in 2006 and the recipient of the prestigious Clark Fellowship during the same year. In addition to these honors, Hallowell has received a number of journalism and community awards for his work.

In this episode of Two Friends Talk History, Zofia interviews Senior Lecturer in Classics at the University of St Andrews, and founder of the Visualising War and Peace Project, Dr Alice König. In this interview, Zofia asks Alice about ideas of representing war in antiquity, and if concepts like a ‘peace movement' was possible in a period of Roman Imperium. We discuss the absences in war narratives, and war's impacts on women and children, and then turn our attention to the podcast series that Dr König and Dr Nicolas Wiater, launched in 2021, the Visualising War and Peace podcast. The Visualsing War and Peace podcast has over 60 episodes and seeks to present listeners with cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives on how war and peace were visualised in the past and how new narratives these established frameworks are seeking to disrupt the ways we talk about, teach and reproduce conflicts. We also discuss the upcoming exhibition Alice has organised with the artist, Diana Forster, opening May 25th at the Wardlaw Museum in St Andrews, 'Somewhere to Stay'. The exhibition focuses on the forced migration experienced by Diana's mother, a young Polish woman, during WWII.To hear Diana's episodes, you can listen to Art and War with Diana Forster or Visualising Forced Migration Through History. We also discussed the upcoming exhibition collaboration with Hugh Kinsella Cunningham, titled 'Picturing Peace in the Congo'. you can find more information linked here. The community of El Zonte in El Salvador has around 12,000 residents, but there is currently no medical and dental clinic, nor pharmacy to serve the area. A group of 3 sisters, who are lifetime residents of El Zonte, have a dream of building a medical facility to address this need. They plan to work with a rotating group of medical and dental volunteers to operate the clinic. To make this dream a reality, the project needs to secure $185k to purchase the land and an additional $515k for construction. All donations will be used exclusively for those two goals. In a world that seems to bring more and more division every day, how do we connect with other people in a deep, human way? Kay Wyma takes us into her story of how seemingly small acts of kindness, thankfulness and mercy have made all the difference for her and her family. “There are so many ways you can practice kindness that are outward acts of kindness. And then you'll start to realize kindness is picking up the laundry for somebody that I'm frustrated with, you know, that they could have done it themselves. There are kindness opportunities everywhere. Be kind to yourself for Pete's sake. At least one day a week. Actively do something kind for yourself.” Learn about what Kay calls a Soul 30 and her new book The Peace Project. I love that this isn't another thing for your to do list, it is more about HOW you do the things on your list. And when we practice kindness, thankfulness and mercy we can't help reflecting the goodness of God to a world that needs it more than ever.
