#nycmixing // New York City Mixing // Weekly Dancehall + Soca Podcast // MiXed + ReMiXed Live!
Welcome to this week's episode of Dancehall + Soca, the Road to Carnival Edition. We start off the mix with a remix of international dancehall star Sean Paul. Continuing on the remix path, we have a reggae version of Chris Brown's Say Goodbye, done by Kiprich. This week follows the theme of good music, featuring the smash it Delilah by Mavado. Then we head into the bass thumping, fist pumping hits like Psy's Gangnam Style and Calabria. Not forgetting new and instant hits on the soca side with a track by Kerwin Du Bois. We also throw in some international flavor spanning across multiple genres with Kanye West & Jay Z's Paris, Baauer's Harlem Shake, and The Chainsmokers with #SELFIE. Then we return to the soca theme with some hot riddims like the Whistle Drums Riddim featuring Trinidad Ghost with Bubble and Dip, also Scrilla with Wood. We decided to sample some chutney, desi and house tracks for the added kick, or rather a heavy bass. Even sprinkled some heavy hitters in the Power Soca sub-genre like Machel Montano, Lyrikal, and Bunji Garlin. To sweeten things up we also have tracks by Soca sensation K Rich and KES the Band. Not forgetting some new exclusives like Bunji Garlin and Preedy with Share It for 2018.

Bounty Killer – “The Poor People’s Governor” – with Beenie Man Clash Discussion & Chunes Bounty Killer a.k.a Rodney Price is one of the Kings of The Clash as well as being tops in the field of Dancehall artists from Jamaica. Bounty helped to boost Reggae Internationally by playing a critical role. Bounty Killer is a clash dj – very blunt and in your face. In the late 90’s and 2000’s, Bounty’s hardcore style was identifiable to the Hip Hop audience and helped to pull in those listeners to Jamaican music. Bounty blended hardcore with down to earth cultural lyrics and built a foundation which others utilized to push Reggae music even further. Still, Bounty has been prolific over the years and today continues to record in great volume and tour the world. In the process, Beenie Man stepped in and crossed Bounty. Beenie is a self described “adaptor.” Much like water, he can fill any space and take on that form. On the tune “Wicked Man,” Beenie used some of the style that Bounty had perfected in the tune “Spy Fi Die.” Bounty took offense and the conflict was formed. The animosity shared between the artists took the form of Reggae Sting Clashes as well as song fe song counteractions over the past 20 years. This podcast features many of those songs. What we did do is to provide only portions of the songs in order to encourage you to seek out the tunes for purchase at your local record shop, on I-Tunes, or from Ernie B’s Reggae online. This way the artists can benefit. Hit “like” at Podomatic if you like this podcast – It will help us broadcast this to a wider audience. In a profession where versatility of the highest order is demanded,Ralston Barrett has covered just about every yard in the field of entertainment management. Since entering the industry in the early-1990s, Barrett has acted as artiste manager, producer, booking agent, road manager and show promoter. Barrett is principal of Entertainment Konnections, previously known as Torishae's Productions, a Negril-based entity that has handled the affairs of an impressive list of acts including Richie Spice, Andrew Tosh, Protoje, Spanner Banner, Junior X and Cen'C Love. Prior to setting up his company Barrett worked with other artistes such as Mr. Vegas, Merciless, Richie Stevens, Anthony B and Kiprich. “I bring 21 years of expertise to the table, I've basically done it all,”said Barrett, a native of Negril, a seaside town and popular tourist spot in Jamaica's Westmoreland parish. “I use all my channels to expose my clients.” Barrett has been involved in the entertainment business since his teens. He got his feet wet after attending Mannings high school in Westmoreland and Ruseas high school in neighbouring Hanover parish. He learned the ropes from several respected journeymen such as music producer and disc jockey Dennis Howard, singer Ed Robinson, Clyde McKenzie, Delroy Morrison, one of the key figures behind the success of Dynamic Sounds in the 1970s and 1980s.Although he prepared for the business side of entertainment during a stint at the National Institute of Commerce, Barrett says he mainly cut his teeth just ‘being out there'. That approach, he believes, has benefited his clients. Blogtalkradio.com/caribbeanradioshow @ 8:00pm call-in 661-467-2407

Jamaican producers may be pressing less and less vinyl but the island still churned out around two thousand 7" singles last year and these are our favourite rowdy ones. In the words of a Heatwave regular who got a sneak preview of the mix: "Who am I? The dancehall king" A look back at 2007 enables you to go from the filthy, nasty but undeniably inspirational sex talk of Beenie Man, Chamelion and 'Sweet' C to the sparse vocal angriness of that old Elephant bloke and then surrender to the leg-lifting power of the Matterhorn man. And you're just getting started. "Everybody start tek way yourself. Follow the riddim and tek way yourself" What jumps out when you listen to these tracks all together is the control each artist commands. You feel at their mercy, and they're merciless. Whether it's the riddims coming in that you know you know - but you don't know you know until you hear the drop, and then you're shaking your shit so hard you're not sure what you know any more - or the fierceness of the lyrics that are flying at you like you're in a video game and you can't move quick enough so you just start letting them hit you. Just. Let. Go. "Have you heard about that little boy in Jamaica?" Militaristic beats dropping left, right and centre make you feel like you're a kind of bashment brigadier going over the top of the trench. It's weird when you've hated so much of what Shaggy has put out in the past to hear him rip the arsehole out of the Heathen riddim. I thought there were no lyrics that could excuse Angel. "Return of the Indian. Truths and rights weh we come to tell the nation" Like most years, 2007 leaves you with the perplexing problem of Sean Paul. It basically comes down to the fact that your legs and hips and arse have more respect for his voice than your brain. It's a bit like when Elephant Man provides the sting in the tail of the whole mix with Three Step on the Madness riddim. You'd like to sit down and have a rest, drink a cup of tea or maybe work on your New Year's resolutions, but it all just has you reaching for the rewind button yet again.
