Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin joined In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss several topics around the Bengals. This episode was recorded before the Bengals season opener and dived into the importance of building the Bengals with strong drafts, as every draft pick from the previous two drafts made the team's roster along with key college-free agents. Tobin also talked about a critical addition in defensive end KJ Henry, a player the Bengals liked when he came out in the 2023 draft class, and rookies Erick All and Maema Njongmeta, who both showed great promise during training camp and the preseason. Craig shares his other 7 biggest takeaways from the Commanders win over the Patriots with a few of them being about the job Eric Bieniemy did replacing Curtis Samuel getting production out of Byron Pringle and Antonio Gibson. He also discussed how this year's draft class showed up and showed out in the win over the Patriots, including some criticism about the referees in the game on the unnecessary roughness penalty on KJ Henry that negated his strip sack and the pass interference no-call on the Patriots receiver that prevented Emmanuel Forbes from intercepting a pass.
Jay Gruden joins the show to talk about the ups and downs of the win over the Patriots, KJ Henry's "sac", and take a look at the other games around the league
With Chase Young and Montez Sweat gone, it provides a big opportunity for Casey Toohill, James Smith Williams and Efe Obada as they will get plenty of snaps at defensive end. Rookie ends KJ Henry and Andre Jones, Jr are also expected to get some playing time as well for Jack Del Rio's defense Offensively, OC Eric Bieniemy said he knows the team needs to run more. He wants to get his back more heavily involved. He was also pleased with the communication of the revamped offensive line and expects it to continue. Washington Commanders NFL Draft picks KJ Henry and Andre Jones Jr. hope to make themselves part of how the team sets the edge moving forward, but how much could they impact the defense in 2023?With two picks in the draft, the Commanders added young depth to their defensive line group. A smart move considering they have no fewer than six expiring contracts in that group as it stands today with Chase Young and Montez Sweat being the most notable.Still, can either Henry or Jones crack the starting lineup as fifth and seventh-round picks respectively? Probably not.But it doesn't mean at least one of them can't be a rookie contributor and that both of them don't have future potential. The Chargers have confirmed meetings with Ventrell Miller, a linebacker from Florida, for the 2023 NFL Draft. Miller stands at 6'2 and weighs 232lbs, and his athleticism and production score are both in the 18th range. He is being looked at as a potential backup special teamer, and the Chargers are looking to deepen their linebacker position with the addition of Miller. Eric Kendricks and Kenneth Murray are already in place as part of the Chargers' linebacking core, but Miller could provide more depth for the team. The conversation discussed potential players for the Cowboys in the NFL draft. Miles Murphy and KJ Henry from Clemson were confirmed as players they had met with at their Pro Day. Ben Sims from Baylor was also discussed as a potential tight end. He is 6'5 and 245 lbs and is seen as a good candidate for blocking in Kellen Moore's offense. He is likely a late round pick but could be a good addition to the Cowboys defense. Murphy is projected to go in the first round and Henry in the second, while Sims' draft projection is unknown. The conversation is about Dalton Schultz and Jayden Woodley, two potential players in the upcoming NFL draft. Dalton is a tight end from Stanford, who is expected to be an undrafted free agent, but has the potential to be a third-round pick. Jayden is from Boston College and is listed as a safety, but has also played cornerback. He is expected to be an undrafted player as well, but has a good tackling ability with 71 solo tackles and 30 passes defended. He ran a 4.87 40-yard dash which is slightly slow, but could have potentially been faster on a pro day. He is an aggressive, strong tackler and is instinctual in his reads. He is a player that could easily fall between the cracks and be overlooked, but could make a good addition to a team. The Chargers need to add another quarterback to their squad, and one great option is Jaren Hall from BYU. He is a great backup option who had a completion percentage of 63.9%, 3,171 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. Another great option for the Chargers is TCU's Kendra Miller, a bruiser of a running back with 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Chargers met with both players at their pro days and also confirmed a meeting with first round pick Dalton Kin. Both Jaren Hall and Kendra Miller would be great additions to the Chargers squad and would bring much needed violence to the running game. Plus it's time to preview the Notre Dame game and we're lucky to have national college football writer Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel bring his knowledge of the Fighting Irish to our show, talking about this year's strengths and weaknesses for Notre Dame and how that might match up with Clemson's up and downs on the field. Uiagalelei and Cade Klubnik to running backs Will Shipley and Phil Mafah to defensive linemen Tyler Davis, KJ Henry, Bryan Bresee and more. Hey Clemson Family, Dabo Swinney and the Tigers easily cast N.C. State aside Saturday night by a 30-20 score that didn't really reflect the magnitude of the win. It happened thanks to some quote Juice from coach Dabo Swinney and shows the in-season growth that's been typical of the Tigers in the playoff era. And maybe the Tigers got a sugar boost from those Krispy Kremes last week because both sides of the ball played their most thoroughly effective football of the year and perhaps the best performance we've seen against quality competition since the 2020 ACC Championship Game win over Notre Dame. DJ Uiagalelei continued to shine and to show why we pegged him during the offseason as the clear starter over heralded incoming freshman Cade Klubnik. He did so again without huge numbers from Will Shipley, whose talent certainly drew respect from the opposing defense and helped open things up for the passing game. Tyler Davis, KJ Henry, Barrett Carter and Trenton Simpson kept the Wolfpack offense largely in check as Myles Murphy and even Keith Maguire also made key contributions. Clemson is clearly the class of the ACC's Atlantic Division but will need to keep improving if they are to stay there, with three straight divisional opponents coming up on the schedule. Find out what looked so good about the Tigers against the Wolfpack – we're glad you found us Clemson Family! I started reading "The Lord is My Courage," by KJ Ramsey, last week and quickly realized, it would be on a short list of books that did some profound life-changing work deep in my heart that permanently changes my trajectory of faith. As I've deconstructed a lot of the unhealthy lenses taught to me by fellow brothers and sisters in those unhealthy cultures themselves, my view in how I see our wonderful God was turned upside down for the better as I truly grappled with God's love and what that means, that God loves me. Where I have felt a bit stuck, was learning how to pursue and relate to my drastically upgraded view of God. This book truly seems to be filling in lots of gaps. Jesus is the shepherd who will seek me when I'm lost; until I'm found. I can trust this. The shepherd is God. -- Joey Enjoy these conversations?
