Advanced. Honors. GATE. Remedial. Foundational. Students have been “tracked,” or sorted and grouped by perceived ability level, into categories such as these for years. While some argue that tracking helps schools and teachers design instruction to meet the needs of students of varying ability levels, the data suggests that tracking has long resulted in racial inequities and de facto segregation within our school system. Dr. Eric Toshalis of KnowledgeWorks (who also happens to have been the O.G. teacher-mentor for both Manuel and Jeff back during their student-teacher days!) joins us this week to share his expertise around the great tracking debate. Katherine will share about KnowledgeWorks' efforts to spark new thinking about ways to prepare students for an uncertain future -- and what that future might hold.  Katherine will describe KnowledgeWorks, speak to the organization's future-oriented research into various focus areas tied to education, and describe some of the patterns of change and learnings she and her team have been seeing over the last several years generating forecasts on the future of learning.   About Katherine Prince   One of the United States' foremost educational futurists, Katherine leads KnowledgeWorks' exploration of the future of learning. In addition to setting the strategy for the organization's strategic foresight work, she speaks and writes about the trends shaping education over the next decade and helps education stakeholders strategize about how to become active agents of change in shaping the future.   Since 2007, Katherine has worked with education stakeholders across the United States and beyond to apply insights from KnowledgeWorks' forecasts on the future of learning to their own contexts. She designs and facilitates generative conversations that help participants explore future possibilities and identify their priorities for responding to the changing landscape. Katherine also helps people keep their eyes on the horizon and explore emerging issues by leading the development of comprehensive ten-year forecasts, deep dives into specific topics, strategy guides and experiential futures resources and by writing articles and blog posts about the future of learning.   Since joining KnowledgeWorks in 2006, Katherine has also led organizational development initiatives, contributed to national collaborations informed by the fields of systems thinking and organizational change and managed programs to foster teaching and professional learning innovations and to encourage collaborative knowledge management among educators.   Earlier in her career, Katherine supported large-scale changes in working practice at Britain's Open University by introducing an online portal and an online student feedback system for 7,500 tutors distributed across the United Kingdom. Prior to that, she managed customer satisfaction improvement projects and established a technical communications group at Pacific Consulting Group in California. In that capacity, she helped federal agencies and other clients increase service quality by incorporating a customer perspective into their organizational planning.   Katherine holds a bachelor's in English from Ohio Wesleyan University, a master's in English from the University of Iowa and an MBA from The Open University with emphasis on creativity, innovation and change and on knowledge management. She also earned a certificate in Foresight from the University of Houston and pursued training in foresight from the Institute for the Future. Williams has a Master's in Education focusing on curriculum and instruction.North Dakota is not alone it pursuing innovative education opportunities. Williams says it's a policy area that is emerging fast. He says in 2012, less than half of the states had any sort of policies around personalized, competency based or innovative learning. Now, he says, almost all states do including around half that have invested in an innovative program or pilot as North Dakota did with SB 2186 in the 2017 legislative session.“KnowledgeWorks is a national organization committed to providing every learner with meaningful personalized learning experiences that ensure success in college, career and civic life.
