Empathy-Driven Leadership: Transforming Work Culture in the Modern Workforce with Dr. Greg Giuliano

Breakfast Leadership

Adapting Leadership for the Modern Workforce In this episode, Michael D. Levitt and Dr. Greg Giuliano explore the evolution of leadership from a rigid, top-down approach to a more coaching-driven model. Greg highlights the shift in workplace dynamics, where employees now seek empathetic, adaptable, and empowering leaders. Using the analogy of a soccer coach, he illustrates how successful organizations recognize that leaders should set the vision, but the team is responsible for delivering results. The Power of Empathy and Curiosity in Leadership Michael and Greg discuss the critical role of empathy and curiosity, especially in times of change. Michael shares his experience transforming a clinic with high turnover into a thriving workplace by truly understanding his team's needs. Greg reinforces that great leaders create environments where people are motivated to give their best—not out of obligation but because they feel valued. They also discuss the importance of allowing employees to operate in their “sweet spot” and equipping them with the necessary resources to succeed. Leveraging Summer Students to Strengthen Work Culture The conversation shifts to the benefits of integrating summer students into an organization. Michael underscores that fostering a strong workplace culture isn't just about productivity—it's about creating an environment where employees feel appreciated and supported, which naturally leads to retention and attraction of top talent. He emphasizes that when leaders prioritize employee well-being, they build a workplace where people want to stay and grow. Fostering Positive Team Culture as Leaders Greg emphasizes that leaders can shape positive team cultures, even within large organizations. Leaders can drive engagement and retention by setting clear expectations, establishing healthy boundaries, and prioritizing team well-being. He introduces the mindset of "serving to lead"—a principle inspired by the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst—highlighting that leadership isn't about authority but creating the conditions for teams to thrive. Building Strong Teams Through Training and Fun Michael shares a powerful story from his time in insurance automation software, where an overlooked installation department wholly transformed under exemplary leadership. The department became a well-respected, high-performing unit through quarterly training sessions and team-building activities. Their teamwork and strategic execution were so impactful that they were handpicked for a significant project in New Orleans, ultimately earning glowing client recommendations. This story reinforces that investing in team culture leads to stronger performance and long-term success. The Connection Between Therapy and Team Building Greg and Michael discuss the parallels between therapy and leadership, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence in building resilient teams. With his background in therapy and coaching, Greg explains how leaders who nurture personal connections within their teams create stronger, more engaged workplaces. They conclude that self-awareness and empathy are non-negotiable skills for today's leaders. Greg's Work at Ultra Leadership To wrap up, Greg shares insights into his work at Ultra Leadership, where he provides executive coaching, team development, and change management consulting.    Dr. Greg Giuliano is an advisor and executive coach to senior leaders and teams worldwide. He founded GA | Ultra Leadership, designing leadership and team development strategies that drive organizational transformation. He aims to help leaders and teams grow their capacity to enable positive disruption for markets, organizations, teams, and individuals. Greg is the author of three #1 Amazon Bestsellers—Coaching for (a) Change (2024), The Next Normal (2022), and Ultra Leadership (2016)—as well as The Hero's Journey (2014). Recently featured as a “Renaissance Man” by William & Mary Alumni Magazine, Steve Tang has been a respected executive and thought leader for many years. Dr Stephen Tang is the author of A Test for Our Time: Crisis Leadership for the Next Normal due in 2023. Steve's op-ed pieces have been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Hill, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Morning Call (Allentown, PA). He is a frequent speaker and commentator on leadership, business, public policy, public health, innovation, and entrepreneurship. We covered a LOT of ground on this episode. From the importance of protecting immigrants- check out the section where Steve describes his parents escaping China during World War 2. Steve's accomplishments are important and many. The decades long relationship with Lehigh University, led to one of Lehigh's greatest startup successes—OraSure Technologies. It began in 1982 when Steve rented a one-bedroom apartment... to 40 years later, after Steve finished eleven years of service to OraSure Technologies. During that time, Steve got to be OraSure's landlord, Chairman, then CEO. And finally: unprecedented. In the past year, OraSure went from a company that made 80 million tests for HIV and HCV in its past 20 years to a company that now can make 100 million tests for COVID-19, HIV, and HCV every year! It was really important to me to hear from Steve regarding communications, not just from Public Speaking, but also building and leading teams. So much has changed (perhaps permanently) when the business world shut down during COVID. Steve's unmatched communications style is galvanizing, and so important to share- regarding authenticity and driving results. Lastly, and certainly important to me, Steve is married to one of my all-time favorite people... Philly News Legend and Leadership Coach Jill Chernekoff. ❔"Is customer experience and process improvement the same thing?" ❔This is a very interesting question! For starters, we need to think of it as a "yes, and" scenario. Business plans tend to focus on what's happening INSIDE the organization, while customer experience is often happening outside what you do. Customer experience is the end-to-end experience that the customer is having with your brand, and it's happening if you're being intentional or not. And the entry points are everywhere because universities are typically a “whole city” in themselves and have things like restaurants, gyms, theaters, donations, ticketing, and sports events. 10:38 › What can we be doing?  Universities and Higher Ed should get serious about encrypting and tokenizing data to protect their systems. Students and faculty should be trained about the risks related to their data. During the depths of the lockdown and recovery period from mid-2020 through 2021, office visitation was influenced by government regulations, informed by infection rates, shaped by the ways people commute and competitive office-labor-market conditions, and the need for in-person interaction with colleagues and clients. Now, traffic is more strongly influenced by new norms of day-to-day work as pressure to return to offices increases and economic conditions face rising headwinds.

He served as senior communications and policy adviser to the Commissioner. Professor Pitts discussed how parents have been in panic over the baby formula shortage, what caused this shortage, and what the FDA is doing to prevent it from continuing. He also explained why it has taken so long to fix the baby formula shortage, and who is to blame. He went into detail about when it became of knowledge that there was a problem, and also that there was purposeful hiding from the FDA about the manufacturing problems. The other scary issue discussed was security breaches on medical devices. In April of this year the Department of Health and Human Services posted an alert to healthcare agencies of an exceptionallyaggressive ransomware group targeting hospitals and healthcare facilities. There can actually be an unauthorized person or persons who will attack and take full control of system access, remote code execution, change configuration, file system read accession, log information access, and also denial of service. We are NOT prepared for this. Not all medical facilities are prepared for this. Another issue discussed was that WTO World Trade Organization has been trying to stop the stealing of Covid 19 vaccinepatents, and about the monkeypox vaccine that is really the smallpox vaccine, and how health has really turned into a business. Dr. Pitts recently published his new book, The Next Normal on how we can apply the lessons learned from COVID-19 to advance other areas of healthcare.

A true hero is someone who, in the face of daunting opposing forces – being called to make a difficult sacrifice for the sake of a noble cause – does so regardless of the odds, despite the personal cost. To what “power” do all true heroes attribute their success; those brave souls who have helped to shape, to make our world a richer, better and brighter place? The Next Normal and the Booming Luxury Real Estate Market:With consumer and purchasing behavior having shifted as a result of the pandemic, the way we value homes is forever changed. Where do we go from here though, and which factors do we need to keep in mind as we move into the next normal? If 2020 was the year of resilience, 2021 was the year of reconciliation — a return to our next normal that will not only be impacted by health, wellness, and safety, but also by an evolving sense of which elements are truly desirable in today's luxury housing market.Another factor that is set to substantially drive the luxury market? The enormous growth in wealth, particularly over the past year. With 20% wealth growth seen throughout 2021, the number of people who now maintain a net worth of over $5 million grew by a whopping 600,000 individuals. With such an influx of new capital, many luxury clients have begun shifting some resources from more traditional investments to the properties they choose to live in. The driving factor of this shift continues to be a desire to enjoy a certain lifestyle that comes along with the property being purchased, continuing a trend in luxury that has become more and more prevalent over time, particularly over the past two years. The Rise of Secondary Markets and the True Real Estate Advisor:Luxury real estate inventory is perceived to be in short supply due to the ever-rising demand for new purchases, but that isn't necessarily the case. While most luxury markets are hotter than ever, more traditional secondary markets, and even new, emerging markets, are also being impacted by luxury market demand. These new growth areas rose in popularity over the last two years, and will remain attractive luxury markets in the near future, particularly with changes in lifestyle that have stemmed from the pandemic.New technologies have also emerged recently, allowing real estate professionals to work with an even more geographically diverse group of clients. Despite these technological advances though, it's imperative to note that the human connection has never been more important, and real estate professionals should embrace their roles as trusted real estate advisors. Afterall, consumers are looking for a sense of authenticity when it comes to partnering with a real estate professional. They're looking for someone who can not only direct their real estate needs, but also address their lifestyle concerns that will inevitably be impacted by their home purchase. That's why it's critical that luxury real estate professionals spend the necessary time and effort in curating their marketing campaigns so as to frame themselves as the trusted real estate advisor who can assist clients in all matters related to the luxury lifestyle they're hoping to embrace.Topics and Questions You'll Uncover During this Episode:What is the next normal going to look like for luxury real estate? How will the recent rapid growth in wealth impact the luxury industry?Primary, secondary, emerging, and global markets in real estateHow technology is impacting the way luxury homes are marketedThe evolving role of the real estate professional and the true real estate advisorResources Mentioned within Episode:The Report 2022Luxury Market Report: 2021 in ReviewView The Report 2022: Luxury Market InsightsColdwell Banker Global Luxury®The Institute for Luxury Home Marketing

At a cellular level, we attune to our family members, co-workers, strangers, and people we see suffering on TV, even if they are thousands of miles away from us. This process, called sociostasis, refers to how our nervous systems absorb and react to information, emotional states, and vicarious experiences of others. It's the reason that, when we are in distress, the mere presence of a loved one has an immediate calming effect. But just as love and hope are literally contagious, so are distress, fear, and anxiety. In the face of a pandemic, instability, and economic loss, we've become intimately linked to one another's pain, and subject to the media's conveyor belt coverage of it, for months on end. It's exhausting, makes everything feel overwhelming, and can leave us feeling uncomfortably numb.Affirmation: I'm safe, I'm alive, I can move through this.Oracle Cards: New Career - Your work focus is shifting in a positive, new and successful direction. Daughter - The answer to your question involves your daughter.Ask for What You Want - Let the Universe and other people know what you need.

Rapid and ongoing advances in digital technologies have made agile adaptation the norm in industrial manufacturing. However, disruptions caused by the pandemic have forced leaders to look at infrastructure issues to plan for future disruptions. In this episode of “To the Edge and Beyond,” host James Kent talks with Irene Petrick, Senior Director of Industrial Innovation, and Faith McCreary, Senior Principal Engineer and Senior Researcher and Strategist for Industrial Innovation, both at Intel, about the challenges leaders face and what it will take to survive and thrive in the “new normal.”“COVID has been an amplifier for pre-existing issues such as access to digital data, worker safety, poor information quality, and unexpected data variances,” says McCreary. “Fortunately, industry leaders are starting to see that infrastructure is an important enabler that can help them deal with those issues.”Petrick agrees, adding “The lesson they've learned is that they need to be better prepared. There are no quick fixes. Disruptions can come from anywhere and will continue.”Petrick and McCreary expect remote work, resource fragility, worker safety, and global supply chain issues to make the need for changes to infrastructure very clear. “Our work suggests that the infrastructure piece is a critical problem,” says Petrick. “Machines give off an incredible amount of data. But not all of it is relevant. We have to figure out what data matters, how often to collect it, and how to process it at the edge so that we're only capturing the most important aspects.”Labor shortages further increase infrastructure problems. “Employers used to feel that automation would replace workers. But the concern now is they don't have enough workers so they must automate,” Petrick says. “Companies are having to scramble to attract, keep, and figure out how to equip workers with AI and automation solutions that augment their ability to do their jobs,”“There are just not enough digitally savvy workers to go around,” adds McCreary, “and that's not going to change anytime soon. What makes it more complicated is that it's not enough for a worker to have digital skills. They also need an understanding of manufacturing. Leaders need what we call ‘double-deep' workers with both manufacturing and technology skills.”According to Petrick and McCreary, the solution lies in creating an ecosystem of collaborators. “It's like making a patchwork quilt,” says McCreary, “and everyone is looking to Intel to bring the pieces together – to play the role of matchmaker. We're spending a lot of time developing standards to help the ecosystem partners play well together in the sandbox.”“It's a great time for technology companies,” says Petrick, “because it gives us problems that digital technologies can solve very well.”Connect with Irene Petrick and Faith McCreary on LinkedIn.
