“Ideas aren't the problem. People have lots of ideas, but they don't have time to think. Thinking has become a daring act within organizations, and in our culture, because we are part of the ‘cult of busy'.” Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Lisa Bodell and the Importance of Simplicity 03:20 Eliminating Complexity and Drowning in Work 07:17 Challenging Assumptions and Reversing Unproductive Rules 13:09 Simplification as the Route to Innovation 16:11 Generosity: Giving Time and Helping Others 19:02 From Managing to Leading: Prioritizing Meaningful Work 20:42 Cultivating a Culture of Simplicity and Meaningful Work 21:08 The Importance of Vulnerability and Killing Stupid Rules 22:26 Asking Quality Questions to Identify and Eliminate Unnecessary Tasks 24:05 Change as a Choice: Recognizing the Power to Simplify 30:37 Setting Boundaries on Time: Prioritizing Tasks for Improved Productivity Episode Summary: Lisa Bodell, a global leader on simplification, collaboration, and innovation, discusses the importance of simplicity in organizations. She emphasizes the need to eliminate unnecessary complexity and create space for thinking and innovation. Lisa shares strategies for challenging assumptions, reversing unproductive rules, and managing time effectively. She also highlights the value of generosity and the difference between managing and leading. Overall, Lisa advocates for a cultural shift towards simplicity and meaningful work. In this conversation, Lisa Bodell and Shannon Cassidy discuss the importance of simplicity and how to eliminate unnecessary rules and tasks in order to create a more efficient and productive work environment. They emphasize the need for leaders to model vulnerability and be open to killing stupid rules. They also discuss the challenges of implementing simplicity when the leader is resistant to change. The conversation covers topics such as identifying and eliminating unnecessary rules, simplifying processes, setting boundaries on time, and the importance of asking quality questions. The key takeaways include the importance of simplicity as a strategy, the need for leaders to empower their teams, the value of questioning why, and the recognition that change is a choice. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Eliminating unnecessary complexity and simplifying processes is essential for innovation and creativity. Challenging assumptions and reversing unproductive rules can lead to more effective and efficient work. Managing time is not the same as leading; leaders prioritize meaningful work and create space for thinking. Generosity is not just about giving money, but also about giving time and helping others reach their potential. A cultural shift towards simplicity and meaningful work is necessary for organizations to thrive. Simplicity should be a strategy and a principle in the workplace. Leaders should model vulnerability and be open to killing unnecessary rules. Asking quality questions, such as 'why' and 'what is holding you back,' is important for identifying and eliminating unnecessary tasks. Change is a choice, and being busy is a choice that can be changed. Setting boundaries on time and prioritizing tasks is essential for simplifying and improving productivity. I first came across Adam and his work in a copy of the Association of Professional Futurists magazine. He's a futurist and youth engagement specialist. While so many people are solely focused on overpopulation, there is another, bigger megatrend behind it. A declining, ageing, population. This changes everything. "we have historically lived in a world where the average population was young. This is about to reverse itself. Are we even aware, let alone ready, for the plethora of ways this will impact society?" In this awesome conversation we talk about his work, what he sees going on in the work, attitudinal changes in the younger generations, and how mega trends are human rights issues, not just a climate change or economic issues. To help get these concepts across, and to help people think in less linear ways, he's in the process of designing a demographic based game called People Power that encourages systems and scenario thinking.  If you want to find out more about Adam's work (and you should) then head over to https://www.futurely.online/

Looking Outside Values: Dr Andy Hines, Futurist & Associate Professor University of Houston

Looking Outside.

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 27, 2022 39:19

We start season 3 digging deep into human values, while speculating on their evolved expression into the future, with futurist and Associate Professor at University of Houston's Foresight Program, Dr Andy Hines. Having authored a book on the topic of values, ConsumerShift, Andy shares how defining what a value is and how it is expressed by people with differing typologies, helps us perceive them as something less static and therefore shows us their potential evolution into the future. Jo and Andy discuss how values - an integral part of a person's identity (their purpose, needs, world views and beliefs) - are expressed in the real world, as directed by external pressures but also individual choices. Andy speculates how modern values, built on capitalism, competition and an obsession with accumulation, may evolve. Andy has been practicing futurism for over three decades and now teaches the skills of a futurist, but he has also applied it first hand during his time at Kellogg's and Dow Chemical. Through observing and projecting changes in the world, he explains why the science of futurism is fruitful, that more things have come true than not, but that we must align to the motion of change with patience, because contrary to popular thought, change happens slower than we think. -- To look outside, Andy speaks to different groups of people looking for diversity of thought; people who come at the world in a way that Andy doesn't. He says this can be done observationally, through reading a magazine you don't normally read, going on community boards you wouldn't normally engage in, but that it should be done with patience, over an extended period of time. By seeking out unique view points, Andy seeks to build a better understanding of people in sub-cultures outside his own. -- Dr. Andy Hines is Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Foresight and is also speaking, workshopping, and consulting through his firm Hinesight. His 30+ years of professional futurist experience includes a decade working inside first the Kellogg Company and later Dow Chemical, and consulting work with Coates & Jarratt, Inc. and Social Technologies/Innovaro. 'Who am I?' is one of the most fundamental questions of all. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to answer as technology enables us to negotiate and create many different versions of ourselves. In this episode of The Small Print, Bronwyn speaks to fellow futurist Tracey Follows about her book “The Future of You: Can Your Identity Survive 21st-Century Technology?” Together they discuss the tension between the collective and the individual, and how our personal freedoms and potential will be transformed over the coming decades. In our digital, data-driven world, Facebook gets a say in verifying who we are, science can alter our biology, and advances in AI are revolutionizing not only how we interact online but with the physical world around us. From health passports and increased surveillance to bio-hacking and relationships with machines, we need to understand these vital issues today so that we might design the future of our identity tomorrow. --- Bronwyn Williams is a futurist, economist, trend analyst and host of The Small Print. Her day job as a partner at Flux Trends involves helping business leaders to use foresight to design the future they want to live and work in. You may have seen her talking about Transhumanism or Tikok on Carte Blanche, or heard her talking about trends on 702 or CNBC Africa where she is a regular expert commentator. From chatbots to brain-computer interfaces to the possibility of superintelligences, our reality is being transformed before our eyes. But can we actually know the nature of intelligence? Futurist and author Richard Yonck joined us to explore our past and future understanding of intelligence. Drawing from his book Future Minds: The Rise of Intelligence, From the Big Bang to the End of the Universe, Yonck challenged our assumptions about what intelligence actually is—many scholars view intelligence as the natural result of progress, but what if there’s more to it than that? Drawing on conversations with scientists and researchers at the forefront of AI, physics, cognitive neuroscience, complexity and other fields, he asked us to consider whether intelligence is an inevitability, an underlying property of our universe. Yonck invited us to examine our own conceptions about the nature of intelligence, where it comes from, and (more importantly) where it is headed. Richard Yonck is a futurist, bestselling author, and international speaker who consults to Fortune 500 companies. He regularly explores the future of artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing, the Internet of Things, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and transhumanism with a focus on their synergies and social implications. Heather recalls her first experience with desert was on a road trip with her  grandmother and says that wasn't the one that put the desert in her heart. At 14, on a Nile river cruise to Egypt with her mother and grandmother, the desert set her soul alight.   Years later, living in Silicon Valley, Heather traveled to LA for work and planned a solo motorcycle trip back through the Mojave, up through Tahoe. She’d camped in Joshua Tree National park overnight, waking up to the sound of coyotes. Heather tells us as she drove out of the park into 29 Palms and heard a voice inside her say, "you’re going to live here someday".   Heather bought a property in Wonder Valley and after taking a writing sabbatical at one of her own desert properties, she found a sense of feeling more energetic and creative in the desert, which spurred her to move here full time - that was about a year ago.   Heather finds being in tune with nature, the mountains, the sky and the ability to be a bit isolated has been very beneficial for her work.  She feels a deep connection to this desert, to the earth and the rock.   In this episode Heather tells us about the painting from a friend that helped her extend the threshold of her desert home while working for a company that required extensive and regular global travel.   As a futurist and security researcher, Heather studies things that are happening today to predict certain future outcomes.  We talk about considering future outcomes that result from present outcomes and making strategic decisions that will lead to more predictable outcomes.   Heather's clients include US & UK governments, SWIFT, Disney, IEEE, mid-size companies and start-ups. Her research has been covered in the New York Times, CNN, American Banker, CNBC, Fox and the Atlantic.   She is the author of the Cyber Attach Survival Manual, published by Weldon-Owen and is the writer/producer of 14 documentaries and short films about future technology. Her work has won multiple awards from the Association of Professional Futurists.    Watch some of Heather's films and learn more about her at her website: www.heathervescent.com   Heather on Twitter: @heathervescent Heather on Instagram: heathervescent
