The 3rd Annual Kofi Burbridge Day of Service on November 28th, 2023 was a one-day nationwide event in honor of Kofi's legacy. It took place 15 cities nationwide and that evening it was fun to recap the day with fans Zac Transport (volunteered in Boston) and newcomer to the podcast, Nick Pitillo (Buffalo). I myself volunteered in Los Angeles at the Westside Food Bank. All in all a great day honoring a great musician and helping great causes. Program Director for the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, Tricia Williams has been an accomplished musician and percussionist herself, but these days she mostly pours her heart and soul into the foundation -- which does amazing work helping secure high-quality musical instruments to deserving, under-funded music programs, and providing an array of services to school districts. Of course Tedeschi Trucks Band has been a long time supporter of Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, as was Kofi Burbridge. And September 22, Kofi's Birthday, is Kofi Burbridge Day of Service. A day of volunteering and raising money for great causes. Welcome virtuosic bassist NATE EDGAR of THE NTH POWER to Ep.058! Nate is a helluva player, and he takes us inside his process, influences, mindset, and intentions as a bassist, band member, brother, and low-end medicine man. Heaping slabs of musicology with a healthy serving of humanity. Nate Dawg doesn't do very many interviews - certainly not lengthy, super-personal purges - so this ep is a real treat, and an emotional sledgehammer. A gentleman, scholar, subsonic sorcerer, and servant of the song,  Buckle up fam, we're goin IN! Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Nate Edgar. 3:00 - new sponsor! THE LEGION OF BLOOM 5:00 - Upful Update 10:00 - Introducing NATE EDGAR 16:00 - Interview - NATE DAWG We hop in the wayback machine to discuss Nate's roots in New Hampshire, from nascent backpack rap steez to a teenager runnin' away on Dead tour, playing in newgrass bands or working as a garbage man. Boston/Wally's/NE jam scene back in the day, learning tuba to get into college, and other random historical minutiae. In a touching, insightful segment, Nate takes us through his experience working with pioneering American reggae band John Brown's Body, and expounds on the legacy of his dear friend, JBB bassist, the late Scott Palmer.  Naturally, we dig DEEP on all things The Nth Power, past, present and future. Ruminations on his bandmates as family, the core trio perservering through adversity, the inherent spirituality in their music. Plus reflections on collaborating with Weedie Braimah, Nigel Hall, Rob Marscher, and the friendship, mentorship, kindness and unbelievable talent of the late, great Kofi Burbridge. We unpack Nth's unparalleled tribute mojo: from Earth, Wind & Power to Bob Marley to Steely Dan, High Sierra's Gospel According to Nth, and a little teaser for Cool Cool Cool just around the bend at Brooklyn Comes Alive.  MY MAN NATE. Today I'm talking to professional musician turned financial planner. Justin Powell. Justin is a classically trained musician who discovered rock music and went on to perform with some of the best musicians in the improvisational jam band rock scene. He was a core member of The Mantras for many years, helping them run their festival. and he's also very active in the Asheville music scene, setting up cool events like the Soul Jazz jam and playing with Blue Bop, a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones tribute band. Justin and I talk about entrepreneurship, planning festivals, being alcohol-free, tips on how to control anxiety, financial management, songwriting, and even more. ** This episode is dedicated to the memory of Kofi Burbridge. As you'll hear in the episode, Kofi gave Justin a piece of advice that changed the course of his life, and without him, this podcast episode wouldn't be here. Kofi was an absolutely brilliant musician who played with more soul than the stage could handle. I have so many fond memories of dancing barefoot in the field of a festival while Kofi poured it all out on stage. To honor his legacy, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi created the Kofi Burbridge Music Matters Fund in partnership with Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation to increase access to instruments and music programs for thousands of youth across the country. Episode 043 welcomes DC-born, NOLA-based NIGEL HALL (Lettuce, Jon Cleary, ex-The Nth Power) to the show for an hour-plus Vulcan Mind Probe. Nige has been a friend for about a dozen years, and I've written extensively about his musical exploits, so this convergence was a very long time in the making. The extremely gifted, Grammy-nominated keyboardist/vocalist - singer/songwriter keeps a lot of artistic irons in the fire. Nigel's dropping sophomore solo LP Spiritual on May 14, 2021, a stunning sojourn into Soulquarian waters co-produced by DJ Harrison and backed by members of Butcher Brown.    @9mins- Introducing NIGEL HALL / @16mins-"Wake Me" Nigel Hall / @20mins - Interview  In a wide-ranging convo, topics include: what's the latest in New Orleans , we get the 411 on Nigel's musical partnership with NOLA-based Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. His motivations and inspirations behind the forthcoming Spiritual, as Nigel reveals a bit about his process and the project's native tongues. We unpack his role over the years with Lettuce, and how the keyboard chair and his contributions to the band have evolved over time. Quick detours to George Duke & J Dilla, with a funny Suwannee flashback or two to boot.  Naturally, we had to get into his time in The Nth Power, and he offers poignant, impassioned reflections that gave me chills. So did his defiant, righteous anger as a Black father to a pair of sons entering young adulthood. So many rabbit holes, with many stones left unturned. Super proud of this powerful powwow with one of the greatest to ever do it; a spiritual awakening of the soulful variety. Music Is People 5/5; expanded 7/7 by Kofi Burbridge † My parents were on top of culture, influenced by it, and fired up by it. In 1961 they were already headstrong about receiving any information about Africa, anything that had to do with the influence on African Americans. They wanted to open that up to us, seeing that we were so hyped on music. They wanted to open our minds to the rest of life, besides “this American way.” They wanted to include it, since we are here. They wanted us to have a broader perspective of what we were involved with and who we are. My dad was really into collecting records. Music fired him up. I believe he snuck a tape recorder into Birdland at that time. He was that kind of guy. By collecting all this music, over time, over time, over time, the way it sunk in was that we started gravitating to these records. They were lined up on the wall, and the album covers were really part of the attraction. There was all kinds of music that he collected, from Fela Kuti, to The Impressions, to Beethoven, to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, back to John Coltrane and we’re bringing on Kool & The Gang. Our dad was the gateway into everything and he made us feel that we could be a part of all of this, which in turn was “Hey, you can be a part of all people, because music is people.” You hear Afro-Cuban music, you’re not thinking Austria, and vice versa. It’s about people—at least to me it is. Even though we didn’t know these cultures or many of the people from those cultures at the time, we were hearing the music and it was just draining us and we were in awe of the whole thing. That’s primarily what opened our minds up to pursuing what we wanted to get into. I was two years old when I moved out of The Bronx, although I am hip to a lot of the culture that came out of there. One big thing for me was learning about the history of the actual gang life, Robert Moses, the Cross Bronx Expressway, and people dispersing. Then The Bronx went completely down, and the people trying to survive in those conditions afterwards—that was a heavy thing for me to learn. This is pre-Afrika Bambaataa. The one thing that stopped the violence was the music. The movie The Warriors from 1979 is based on a true story about gangs and gang violence in The Bronx. There was a guy who came up to give peace talks about stopping all violence and he was killed on the spot. The movie tries to portray this in many different ways. What happened after that was that most gangs realized, look, we’re coming down on each other just trying to survive, but we should really be putting our heads together and fighting in a different way. That was one of the most enlightening things I learned about The Bronx. Eventually it led to bringing more people together and one side of the borough able to go visit people on the other side of the borough. What opened the door was dancing—street dancing. Twirling on your hands, twirling on your head, which became the new competition along with Kurtis Blow and Afrika Bambaataa and so many others. There were spinners and guys playing records. Dancing was the street thing. You’ll find this a lot in the documentary Rubble Kings (2015), which is so informative about how they got into it, how it changed over time into music, and how the music itself healed that violence. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Episode 012 of *The Upful Life Podcast* welcomes the lovely and talented Jasmine Fraser, a West Coast DJ best known as Naughty Princess. Jasmine is a rising star in the bass music underground, and we were lucky to get her on the show for fascinating conversation that lasts just under an hour. This took place the day after her huge set at Resonate in Oakland, and Jasmine was a really good sport this rainy San Francisco afternoon. We had to chase my phone down, because I dropped it somewhere in transit, and luckily a Good Samaritan scooped it up. Once I retrieved said device, we settled into her gold minivan on a random city block for a proper conversation about music... and life.  NAUGHTY PRINCESS INTERVIEW STARTS AT 18:30   Topics include her formative years in Melbourne, AUS, as Jasmine takes us back to the ashrams of her youth and how chanting to ecstatic states affected her as a kid. A little bit on Trance music, before we sort of time-travel into 2010 pretty quickly. She reflects on catching Bassnectar on his way up at a small SF club, and how that scene and community welcomed her at a transitional moment in her life. Fraser also discusses the mentorship of An-ten-nae, and details the nature their collaboration "Hearts". Then things get a little heavy, in the best kind of way. Jasmine's father was Andy Fraser, bassist for legendary British band Free, a member of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Jasmine explains how it was Andy's 2015 death that really propelled her to become a DJ, and the Naughty Princess was born. We recall our chance meeting at Burning Man 2016, both of us consumed by the grief of the loss of our respective fathers, and how that brief but potent exchange on Playa bonded us for life.     Since she identifies as a feminist, I asked her to share some thoughts and feelings on the patriarchy, specifically in the music world and festival culture, We talk a lot about Trap music themes, and rap music's misogynist lyrics, with regard to how fans respond to the messages found within songs. Jasmine tells a potent personal story about a Burning Man performance, when a young woman reached out to her after the set, concerned about a single song Naughty Princess played. This reflection turns into a meditation on the innate power of language and how even she and I are affected. Naughty Princess also touches on some less controversial topics, like tabla-trap, ecstatic dance vs. urban dancefloors, Nevada City CA, and much more... with the consistently-amazing Jasmine Fraser. (1hr 8mins) PLUS a short chat with red-hot Atlanta producer Daily Bread, who checks in about his career momentum, dope collaborations and more. Rhett explains why D.I.T.C. and NYC boom-bap influenced this native ATLien more than the crunk and Dungeon hometown heroes. Shout-out to Whit Hawkins and the Hawk's Nest roster. Included towards the end of Episode 012 (1hr 27mins) is a humorous and informative interview with Shepherds Meadow Farms master grower Brandon. A Mendocino County, CA-based organic ganja farmer who (some of) you may recall heaved a giant sack of cannabis onstage to Jay Kay of Jamiroquai last April at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. After much hullabaloo, we finally get the 411 on that craziness, and while we were at it, a little Q&A about how a small farmer grows 100% organic craft cannabis. This conversation took place in December, on Sunday night at the tail end of The Emerald Cup, and it's safe to say that the weekend full of weed had taken a toll by the time I conducted this interview. Please excuse my blaziness.  *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*, (1hr 39mins) we want to honor the memory of the late, great Kofi Burbridge. A true icon of our music community, friend, brother, otherworldly multi-instrumentalist. A first ballot Spirit of Suwannee Hall of Famer. Instead of a moment of silence, we will hear his music to honor his memory. I've chosen a celebrated collaboration in tribute to Kofi Burbridge, his appearance alongside trusty axeman Derek Trucks, both sitting in with the home team, Lettuce, at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, for Bear Creek's 2009 finale. If you were at this set, then you remember how truly special it was. Rest in Power, Kofi.     The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Rob and Seth first talk about they had to miss some of an Umphrey's McGee show to conduct this interview, which at once pained Turner but also indicated how strongly he felt about the brilliance of this guest. A quick tribute to Kofi Burbridge, a musician who passed away shortly before parts of this episode were recorded, unfolds to the Teel interview which finds him quick to explain how thankful he is to do what he loves for a living. Isaac talks about the importance of a band having a vision and being careful to make licensing decisions with this in mind. He also relates a revelation he had while working at Payless Shoes, how he auditioned for Stomp and the fact that he loves writing music and would be "really content" with just writing music if for some reason he could no longer tour. Isaac also mocks the "fashion-ignorant" Turner for being overly impressed with his own yoga pants, but he welcomes Turner's offer to give him a Kyrie Irving shirt (upon further review, it will probably be a Jayson Tatum shirt). The trio talk about the improv in the song "Convoy," the importance of "uber subtle non-verbal communication" and how while the band often knows exactly where they are going, those moments "when you know you don't know" can be the blessings which "hit you in the face." Teel admits his love of hip/hop and how in his teaching his students learn the importance of making a statement and how Kendrick Lamar "doesn't even know he's a drummer." Isaac also walks us through how his song "CMF 9000" evolved from an Ableton piece to a TAUK staple (this is demonstrated to completion at the end of the episode). He also relates about how the band benefits from each member having its ego enough in check to benefit from their each other's composition inputs and how this in turn makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. He walks us through many TAUK songs, particularly delighting Rob by relating some of the history of the Turner favorite, "Check Mate." The new, free live release "Real TAUK Vol. 1" featuring tracks suggested by the band comes up, and Isaac indicates receptiveness to Turner's idea to have Part Two be selected by some of their most fervent fans. Perhaps most touching is how Teel repeatedly returns to the theme that much of his success in life and music is due to his mother. God bless her. The episode ends with Seth and Rob each sharing some recent live music experiences, and Rob ranting about confounding Twitter responses he received from cranky New York writer Caryn Rose and the curious Twitter inferences of the movie soundtrack artist, Branford Marsalis. Jimmy Herring circa 1994In the spring of 1994 the Grateful Dead were still touring, I got married and began my graduate studies at DePaul University. Working full-time in the printing and publications department of my alma mater and going to school full time left me with little time for live music or much of a social life. But in the summer of 1994, all I had to do was work full time... and take some of my precious earned vacation time to see some music. After 25 years of actively seeking out live musical experiences, the summer of 1994 stands out as a highlight. In particular, the ten day period of July 14 - 24, 1994 stands out as one of the most ambitious musical experiences of my life.Thursday 7/14/94 - work 9 - 5, Widespread Panic, The Vic (Aquarium Rescue Unit opened)Friday 7/15/94 - work 9 - 5Saturday 7/16/94 drive 5.5 hours to Ames, IA -  Widespread Panic, People's Bar and GrillSunday 7/17/94 - drive back to ChicagoMonday 7/18/94 - work 9 - 5, 3 hour drive to the Riverbend Campground outside of Noblesville, IN.Tuesday 7/19/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreWednesday 7/20/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreThursday 7/21/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreFriday 7/22/94 - drive back to Chicago, celebrate birthday at Martyrs'Saturday 7/23/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, ChicagoSunday 7/24/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, Chicago5 Dead shows, 2 Panic shows and 3 full days of work in 11 days. But you are here to hear about Widespread Panic. That July 14th show at the Vic was originally scheduled for a larger venue, the newly opened Skyline Stage on Navy pier. But Peter Frampton used his own PA a couple of weeks earlier which led to the venue not allowing Widespread to use their PA....  I'll add that this change in venue happened after the band and crew had arrived in the early morning of July 14 to set the stage.Several dozen people were turned away at the door of the Vic because of overcrowding and the air conditioning failed before the band even hit the stage. The Aquarium Rescue Unit (without Col. Bruce but with Kofi Burbridge on keys and flute and Paul Henson on vocals) opened for Panic. I wonder if Jimmy Herring ever had a sense of deja vu when sharing the stage with  Widespread Panic? Or perhaps being in the Aquarium Rescue Unit was like LIVING in deja vu!I featured the final two songs and the encore of Panic's one set show back in PaniCast #4....PaniCast #4 - Sweating to July 14, 1994 The Vic Theatre, Chicago. This week I bring you the opening of the first set up through the drum break in Papa's Home.I've also added a couple of great radio studio performances from 1993 and some silly interviews...July 14, 1994The Vic TheatreChicago, IL(set one opener)Heroes >Weight of the World,PilgrimsPorch SongMay 3, 1993KTCZ 97.1 StudiosMinneapolis, MNInterviewWonderingJuly 14, 1994 continuesLittle Kin,It Ain't No Use >Travelin' LightMay 10, 1993WDET 101.9 FMDetroit, MIInterviewHenry Parsons DiedJuly 14, 1994 continuesJunior,Stop-Go >Papa's HomeJuly 14, 1994 Aquarium Rescue Unit (opening for Widespread Panic)Vic TheatreChicago, ILFixin' to Die(calling out to 'Garrie' during the song... same Garrie?)Jimmy Herring on guitarOteil Burbridge on bass/vocalsApartment Q258 on drumsKofi Burbridge on keys/flutePaul Henson on vocalsLISTENER'S GUIDE:7/14/94Listen how Weight of the World starts with Dave melodically driving the song forward until Mikey takes control and leads into the third verse.
