Devonport residents 'gutted' road upgrade could be axed

Businesses in the Auckland suburb of Devonport say they are gutted long-awaited upgrades to the grid-locked main road are on the chopping block now the regional fuel tax is going. Lake Road is the one road into the peninsula and the planned improvements would have shaved 12 minutes off the commute to and from Takapuna. But the project is among 14 that are now being whittled down to just three when the fuel tax ends in July scrapping $600 million in funding. Amy Williams reports.

Today, the government announced the end date of axing Auckland's regional fuel tax, June 30.  Mayor Wayne Brown has said the funding loss means he'll probably have to cancel a bunch of projects including; improvements to Lake Road on Auckland's Northshore, the final stage of the Eastern Busway and work on an Airport Botany busway.  People filling up in the city have been paying an extra eleven and half cents a litre on fuel, over and above what other motorists around the country pay, since mid 2018.  Without it, the Mayor estimates a transport funding shortfall of one -point-two-billion dollars for the city over the next four years. Minister for Transport and Auckland Simeon Brown speaks to Lisa Owen.  [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6346461450112

It's official, the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax is gone-burger from 1 July. Aucklanders will not have to pay $11.5 cents a litre more everyone else in the country every time they fill up their cars. Toyota Hilux drivers will save $9.20 a fill and Toyota Corolla drivers will save $5.75 a fill. Good riddance to bad rubbish. That was a rort, wasn't it? Remember what Auckland was supposed to get for that? We were supposed to get upgrades to Mill Road, the road I'm obsessed with because of how desperately the city needs it- running from Manukau down to Drury as an alternative to the jam-packed Southern Motorway. Did we get it? We paid for it for six years. Did we get it? No, of course we didn't. Did we get the Lake Road upgrade we've been talking about since at least 2017? No, we didn't get that. Did we get the Glenvar Road upgrade we've been talking about since at 2016? No, we didn't get that. And the list goes on. Instead, the money got used for cycle lanes and speed humps. And do I need to remind you about those speed humps? How about the one got laid in Three Kings, then got ripped up two years later and laid again because AT stuffed up- and it cost us $600k? How about that one? Mayor Wayne Brown is not happy about the loss of funding. He's released a list of projects at the end of a press release, with no explanation for the list. The inference, I'm thinking, is that these are the projects that are going to get cut, because they haven't got the funding. Let me list some: Mangere West cycleway. Road safety programme, including high-risk intersections. The safe speeds programme, aimed at reducing vehicle speeds near schools. Small scale projects to improve local cycling connections. New low cost cycle ways to improve safety and travel options. Upgrades to multi-modes roads, paths, and intersections to support Kainga Ora. I doubt very much that many Aucklanders are going to cry tears over this because of one reason. We have paid this under the mistaken belief that we were paying for better roads. What we got instead was AT squandering money on their own inability to just construct a basic pedestrian crossing. But more importantly, what we got was a city that is now more congested and harder to drive around. So as far as I can see, very little has improved for what we've paid, and much of what we're seeing is worse. I'm happy to defund Auckland Transport. We saw the first billboard while driving along Lake Road. We'd driven the road a hundred times before, because it was the only road out of town that went anywhere worth going, and there was fuck-all to do in town except get drunk, get stoned, and get in trouble. Lake Road let us go ice fishing in the winter. A thumbs down from the AA, for Auckland Transport's parking plan.  Auckland Transport wants to make cars the lowest priority for kerbside space and wants to remove parking for 240 kilometres of road.  Roads likely to get the parking chop include Onewa Road, Lake Road, Great North Road, Mt Eden Road and Manukau Road.  AA's Policy Director Martin Glynn told Mike Hosking it adds to other policies affecting parking.  He says the government has already put a policy in place which means new residential homes don't need onsite parking. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As many of you will know I moved to a new house and new suburb just a couple of weeks before lockdown. We sold our house last year and over summer we found a 3 bedroom apartment so this was the big downsize.  Of course, it didn’t work because all the kids promptly moved home for lockdown so it’s a snug downsized family home.So over the past few weeks, I have revealed that I now live in the Auckland suburb of Devonport.  For those who don’t know the city, Devonport a small suburb at the south end of the North Shores.  There’s one road in and out called Lake Road. It’s a pretty beachside suburb with five beaches within one kilometre.  It’s got the navy base which is always full of action.  It’s got two volcanic mountains which my dog loves walking up. It’s a lovely place to be locked down in. But it’s also fair to say everybody is a bit dismissive of Devonport because it’s just a little too pretty and twee and shall we say bourgeois.  It’s also very white with nearly 93% of the population of European descent, which is the highest figure in the nation. Now I didn’t move there to be bourgeois and beachy in a white enclave. I moved there because I never want to be stuck in traffic in Auckland getting to work. Which meant finding a place to live on an efficient public transport route.Devonport has a ferry.  In 11 minutes you’re in Auckland’s CBD. So it’s like an inner-city apartment which magically is not in the city. But at the moment the ferries run very rarely and mostly completely empty.  I’m not using them because the motorways are empty and the drive to work is a breeze. But come Level 2 and 1 as we return to a new normal and the roads jam up again the question arises on how I’m going to feel safe.Professor Michael Baker, the University of Otago epidemiologist says "mass masking" should be part of New Zealand's fight against Covid-19 as the country moves to alert level 2 making social distancing more difficult.Particularly is you’re in crowds such as on public transport, or in CBDs, or malls, or bars when they open. He reckons you could use homemade fabric masks.New Zealand could look to Asian countries, including Taiwan, which had used masks as part of successful efforts to contain the virus.Currently, Dr Bloomfield says in higher-risk environments, such as public transport, people may wish to wear a mask, but they will not be compelled to.I’m not a fan of masks particularly when you see people wearing them all day and in safe environments.  You wonder about the efficacy of that.  I do believe it’s good to stop people spreading droplets and bugs, but if you’re sick how about just not going out at all.But if next week I’m back on the ferry my question will be should I wear one just in case.  If not for me but to make my fellow passengers feel safe. And of course, for all those people thinking of using masks when they go to cafes, I ask this: have you considered how on earth you’re going to drink or eat anything with a mask on?  There was a notable story this week about a woman who had cut a hole in her mask to fit a straw. I wish I was joking.

On this episode of Bayfield County Wild Co-hosts Nancy Christopher and Mary Motiff, director of Bayfield County Tourism, speak with Kevin Schram, president of the Chequamegon Chapter of the North Country Trail Association. They discuss how Kevin’s subchapter handles the maintenance and promotion of their portion of the trail running through Bayfield and Ashland counties, as well as other upcoming area events throughout June.  Waterfalls and Hiking Trails in Bayfield County  Bayfield County is rich in natural wonders, so we invite everyone to get out and enjoy nature to its fullest this summer!  Houghton Falls – A popular location for visitors for its beauty and natural resources, Houghton Falls’ eco system is delicate. Visitors are encouraged to adhere to the signage and stay on the designated trails to avoid additional damage to the area. As part of the Bayfield Regional Conservancy, helps the Town of Bayview to manage and preserve the falls and surrounding land for the future.  At Lost Creek Falls near Cornucopia, the Forestry and Parks Department has made some improvements to the trail, including the addition of a boardwalk. It's approximately 1.5 miles to the falls, Stay tuned for more developments at Lost Creek Falls later this year, with the addition of a bridge that leads to a picnic area and steps to get down to the falls.  Hiking Trails – Bayfield County has over 35 different hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. From three-quarters-of-a-mile on the Gil Larson Nature Trail around the Old Iron Bridge in Bayfield, to a much longer hike on the North Country Trail, hikes are noted as easy to moderate for both rookie and experienced hikers.  Interactive Map – Did you know Bayfield County Tourism offers an online interactive map – usable on mobile devices or computers – that can assist you in planning your next hike? Click our link, then click on “Play,” followed by “Non-Motorized Trails.” You can then zoom in and see trail details throughout Bayfield County! If you’d prefer a printed brochure, please contact our office and we’ll be happy to send one your way.  North Country Trail  America’s longest among 14 national scenic trails, the North Country Trail runs through seven states, from the plains to the east coast. The North Country Trail Association (NCTA) is a national organization based in Michigan. Its various subchapters in each state are responsible for maintaining and promoting its particular section of the trail. Kevin Schram and the volunteer members of the NCTA’s Chequamegon Chapter handle the section of the trail that runs through both Bayfield and Ashland counties. The Wisconsin portion of the North Country Trail offers continuous wilderness hiking for over 130 miles.  To get a sense of the depth of the 4,600-mile-long North Country Trail, if you headed west from Bayfield County you could hike about halfway into North Dakota. Heading east, the trail stretches as far as New York. Kevin hopes that in the future, the trail will link up with the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. Only a dozen people have hiked the entire trail, with half accomplishing this journey over different periods of time. These individuals are referred to as section hikers. The other six are considered through-hikers, who start at one end and walk continuously to the other. There are plenty of day hikes on the North Country Trail in Bayfield County for those who want to do a more casual hike, though.  The work Kevin and his team accomplish includes re-routes around wet areas, removal of fallen trees on the trail and maintenance on bridges and other structures to ensure safety for all hikers. He speaks highly of the Wisconsin portion of the trail for backpacking, as two different wilderness areas allow camping anywhere you desire, if the location is at least 200 feet from a fresh water source.   Currently, the Chequamegon Chapter of the NCTA is working with the National Forest Service to construct some back country campsites, which will help to make the North Country Trail in Wisconsin a premiere backpacking destination. Kevin hopes to have a campsite every seven miles, but it will be a slow process. The National Forest Service will hopefully approve at least two sites in 2018, and Kevin’s group could have them built by fall. He says that ideally, all campsites would be listed on maps so visitors can better plan their stay.  Anyone who hikes the North Country Trail can register on the NCTA website to get special patches that recognize when individuals have hiked 50 or 100 miles of the trail. Kevin says there are fun, interpretive and themed hikes offered as well. June’s hike focuses on finding and identifying different species of birds. For event info, follow the Wisconsin chapter of the NCTA on Facebook.  June Events  Summer is heating up with a full list of events in Bayfield County! What do you do when the higher Adirondack elevations are muddy, wet, and fragile and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation asks hikers to consider remaining below 2,500 feet in elevation to let the peaks dry? Hike to the half way point just below 2,500 feet on the originally-planned hike and then use the rest of the afternoon to jump off some cliffs, obviously. Spontaneity feeds adventure and curiosity and this change of plan ended up being just as fun as the original plan would have been. The initial plan for friends Neil, Rose, Andrew and myself was to conquer Mount Colvin and Blake Peak via Lake Road off of the Ausable Club. We decided to still hike in this way to hit Indian Head, one of the Adirondacks' more beautiful and iconic sights. Map of Route to Indian Head (out of Ausable Club) We started the day off parking at the far Ausable Club parking lot located at the "P" in the above map (free lot) and hiked past the always beautiful Ausable Club towards the huge timber AMR gate to Lake Road. This access point serves as a means of getting to the Great Range including the Lower and Upper Wolfjaw, Armstrong, and Gothics  and the edge of the Dix Mountain Wilderness including Mt. Colvin and Blake. When we signed in at the check-in, a post-it note said "muddy, bugs are bad, go home." Knowing that we would still be below 2,500 feet in elevation and that a decent portion of the hike would be along the access road, we began walking. This was the soothing start of the first part of the day - a part that would be filled with a timber bridge in the woods and lots of waterfalls. When TLC tells you "Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls", they are wrong. Definitely chase waterfalls. Totally Appreciate a Nice Bridge in the Woods Waterfalls....Waterfalls Everywhere. And Neil. Chasing Waterfalls Once we started to gain in elevation, Indian Head quickly approached. This is not a super intensive hike, but the rewards are incredible. As you get close to Indian Head, there is a junction with a branch to an outlook, which we eagerly took. This was the first taste of views. The Outlook is Certainly Worth The Exploration Neil and Andrew on the Outlook We made short time at the outlook knowing that Indian Head was right around the corner. We were ready to sit down, snack, and take in the Indian Head views for a little while now that we had our first taste of the lush greenery in the mountains along Lower Ausable Lake. Boom. We made it. Indian Head Required Candid Pose (Photo Credit: Rose) View Looking North from Indian Head We climbed around the rocks for about a half an hour (it only took us about 2.5 hours to get to Indian Head). This is a great spot if you're looking for a moderate hike that will allow you plenty of time to snack, eat lunch, and soak in the views. I imagine Indian Head is majestic at sunrise and sunset as well and wouldn't be too difficult to get to to experience them. We took a slightly alternate route back to Lake Road, cutting down as soon as possible as we left Indian Head. This allowed us to check out the awesome dam at the end of Lower Ausable Lake. Sweet! Dam at the Edge of Lower Ausable Lake From this point on, we took the gravelly Lake Road back to the Ausable Club and eventually to the car. Surprisingly, the black flies weren't nearly as bad as we thought they were going to be (maybe due to the weather?). We were warned ahead of the hike that "the black flies are thick and chewy this year. Prepare to give blood." Nice!...very descriptive indeed! We were prepped for Armageddon but never really encountered it. With how wet many of the areas in the high peaks are right now, I'm not surprised that other areas may be a war zone. Anyways, we finished the hike around 1:30pm and still had the entire afternoon to explore, so naturally we went cliff jumping. None of the others had been to Split Rock Falls on the way to Elizabethtown, so that's where we went.

Gayle J. Beatty I am a wife and mother of four, I live in Dutchess County, New York. My first encounter happened when I was solo camping as a teenager up on Stissing Mountain. Back then, I had never heard about Bigfoot and had no idea what was making these horrific screams so close to my tent. It wasn't until years later after watching Finding Bigfoot, that I made the connection, that's what a Bigfoot sounds like! I decided to google Bigfoot sightings in Dutchess County, ant the first one that came up was a daytime road crossing, by two women on Lake Road, which is the same road I lived on. From that day forward I was hooked!  I began investigating in 2011, and formed my group called Bigfoot Researchers of the Hudson Valley in January of 2012. Since then I have gathered much evidence, and have met and made many friends. our approach is Peaceful and non-threatening. We use Native American techniques such as smudging with sage and gifting with tobacco. You can find us on Facebook and you tube.

This week we venture into a deep dark cave of idiocy, and emerge with a disturbingly large number of laws that are either outdated, or just plain dumb. Why is it illegal to walk a cow down Lake Road in Bay Villiage Ohio? What is the legally correct course of action to take when your pet tiger breaks free in Canton? Why do the people of Jackson Ohio take Apple Parade seating too seriously? We attempt to answer all of these questions, and more!

Gayle Beatty is a wife and mother of four children. Gayle grew up on the base of Stissing Mountain in the town of Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York. Growing up in the Hudson Valley, she was always interested in nature spending most of her time in the woods. Gayle learned to fish and hunt from her Dad and enjoyed riding horses and milking cows at her friends farms. She had never heard of Bigfoot, and had little fear of being in the forest alone. One night Gayle decided to go solo camping on the mountain behind her house. She set up her tent in her favorite spot and settled in for the night. It wasn't long before she heard what she believed to be a Great Horned Owl call right in the tree above her. It was very loud and a bit unnerving . A few minutes later, she heard the most God awful sound of her life! Gayle was very familiar with the wildlife in her area, and this was so loud and powerful, that she became frozen with fear. She doesn't know how long she sat there shaking, afraid that whatever it was would kill her. She finally decided to bolt down the steep ravine and ran to her house. She was white as a ghost and terrified.  Her parents asked her what was wrong, all she could say was there is something up on the mountain and it's after her! It was not until around 2011 when Gayle watched the Finding Bigfoot Show and heard the vocalizations, that she knew what she had heard that night. Gayle immediately googled Bigfoot sightings in Dutchess County and found out that two women had reported a daytime sighting of a large black Sasquatch crossing on Lake Road, which just happened to be the very road she lived on. Needless to say that sparked her curiosity. Since then it has become her passion to find out the truth behind these Creatures that inhabit our forests. Gayle will be joined by fellow researchers Connie Imming and Debbie Ray.
