Have you ever thought about that word: Parenting? Parenting is actually about us, not about our kids. Sure, part of the job of parenting is 'child-rearing,' or 'raising kids,' or whatever you want to call it. With one of my kids, I used to say that it is "my privilege to supervise her while she raises herself." But really -- parenting is not about them. It's about WHO we're BEING while we are doing the work of loving them and guiding them. Our journey is to be with them on their journey -- and that can get complicated sometimes. Messy. Confusing! If you are a parent who knows that this journey of parenting is definitely calling on you to learn some stuff -- if you know that your spiritual or emotional journey in life is being challenged -- then tune in to some highlights from this year's podcasts about the Inside Adventure of Parenting And remember -- however or wherever you are on this fascinating journey of yours -- we're glad that you're on it with us! One of the trickiest aspects of parenting with ADHD is that, very often, the best parenting strategies -- the ones that help our kids the most -- require calm, well-regulated parents. And that's not always easy to accomplish when parents have their own big emotions. In this conversation, we'll identify at least 2 of the 10 main differences in an ADHD brain that create more intense negative emotions (in kids and adults), and get guidance on 2 essential components to manage those challenges. We'll talk about why ADHD brains feel their feelings so intensely, and how we can manage our own emotions even when our kids are pushing every last button. Marcy Caldwell, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist, writer, and proud mom of 2 in a family full of ADHD who has been helping adults with ADHD thrive for over twenty years. She is a passionate advocate for adults with neurodiverse brains and is dedicated to helping them create environments that unlock their unique genius. Marcy is the founder of ADDept.org, a blog and digital resource for adults with ADHD, the owner and director of The Center for ADHD, and the creator of Meltdown to Mastery, an innovative digital program that helps adults with ADHD learn to better regulate their emotions. Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Marcy Caldwell, Psy.D. about navigating emotions. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Marcy highlights that individuals with ADHD tend to amplify negative stimuli while minimizing positive ones, leading to a cycle of negative emotional feedback and self-perception. Marcy emphasizes the importance of allowing oneself to experience a range of emotions, including big joy, anger, and sadness. Marcy shares the concept of decreased early sensory encoding in ADHD brains; this phenomenon causes individuals to process negative information more intensely than positive information, leading to heightened negative emotions. To say that this conversation is inspirational and heartfelt, thoughtful and emotional, and fundamentally captures all that this summit intends to convey to our listeners -- well, that's an understatement. This conversation with Marvyn Harrison offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be an adult diagnosed with ADHD, what it means to be a black man diagnosed with and treated for ADHD, what it means to be a father with ADHD, a partner, an entrepreneur, a thought-leader. You get the picture. This conversation is a meta conversation about ADHD. And while it will appeal to everyone, it's likely that it will resonate most with the adults with ADHD who are continuously trying to understand and manage themselves. Marvyn Harrison is a visionary business consultant driving cultural change through BELOVD, working with clients like WPP, Footlocker, and News UK. As the founder of Dope Black Dads and Dope Black Men, he inspires greater change, advocating for the Black community across the UK, US, and Africa. It's just kind of do it because it's the right thing to do." In the world of childhood ADHD, you may have heard of Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), and you might even have some opinions about it, too. It often travels with untreated ADHD. But as the medical community begins to understand the overlap between ADHD and Autism, we want to invite you to learn more about a presentation of Autism called PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance). To be honest, there's some controversy about this diagnosis, because it exists in the UK and Australia, but not officially in the US. So, let's focus instead on the reality of what's going on when a child resists and avoids the demands of life! In our community, we've learned that if you can understand what's underlying troublesome behaviors, you can support them better. And this conversation with Nicola is guaranteed to help you do just that! Nicola Reekie is a parent to a young, autistic person who has a PDA profile. PDA is an abbreviation for Pathological Demand Avoidance or, as some prefer, Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. Her mission is to support families and professionals in understanding PDA, and she founded The PDA Space to provide resources that will deepen their understanding to create a safer environment for young people. A solution-focused therapist, Nicola collaborates with many amazing families, education and healthcare professionals to information and an excellent support network that supports their emotional well-being and helps to create calm in often challenging situations. Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Nicola Reekie. Here is what to expect on this week's show: The episode highlights the significance of approaching individuals with PDA with compassion and understanding, focusing on their unique needs rather than demanding conformity. Nicola emphasizes the importance of establishing connections and collaborating with individuals with PDA. Nicola explains framing behaviors as neurologically driven rather than defiant can shift the perspective and reduce stigma. Whether you're talking about ADHD, Autism, or 2e, developing neurodivergent brains in kids require adults to understand what it takes to get activated. The ADHD brain, for example, is understimulated. It doesn't respond to rewards the same way as neurotypical brains. And it has a complicated relationship with motivation. So how can you help kids with ADHD (and other kinds of neurodiversity) to get essential stuff done? One key motivational tool is novelty. Join us to understand better why ADHD brains thrive on novelty, how novelty and motivation are tied together, and how you as a parent or a professional can integrate novelty when supporting your kids (of any age!). And remember: this fundamental hack can serve you well with all members of your family and community. Emily Kircher-Morris, M.A., M.Ed., LPC, is a former educator, author, and speaker. Inspired by her own experiences as a neurodivergent person, she is dedicated to destigmatizing neurodiversity and supporting neurodivergent people of all ages. She hosts The Neurodiversity Podcast, which explores the psychological, educational, and social needs of neurodivergent people, and is the author of several books, including "Teaching Twice-Exceptional Learners in Today's Classroom"(Free Spirit Publishing, 2021), "Raising Twice-Exceptional Children" (Taylor & Francis, 2022), "A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children" (Gifted Unlimited, LLC, 2023), and "Neurodiversity-Affirming Schools" (Free Spirit Publishing, in press). She speaks at statewide, national, and international conferences and is in private practice in Missouri. Listen to this Parenting With Impact episode with Emily Kircher-Morris. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Emily highlights the importance of incorporating novelty in educational settings to engage neurodivergent individuals effectively.
