Episode Overview:    In this captivating episode of the Higher Density Living Podcast, host Jason Rigby sits down with Dr. Rick Strassman, a world-renowned psychedelic researcher and author of the groundbreaking book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. Known for his pioneering clinical research on DMT and his deep explorations into altered states of consciousness, Dr. Strassman brings a unique perspective to the table as he dives into the Book of Genesis. Together, they explore the intersections of biblical narratives, Jewish tradition, and the spiritual insights gleaned from his decades of psychedelic and personal inquiry.   From the creation accounts to the Fall, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, this episode unpacks Genesis through a lens that blends science, spirituality, and prophetic wisdom. Dr. Strassman shares his journey from Zen Buddhism to Judaism, his literal approach to interpreting biblical texts, and how his DMT research informs his understanding of human consciousness and divine interaction. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, a psychedelics enthusiast, or simply curious about the deeper meanings of Genesis, this episode offers a thought-provoking and enriching discussion.   Meet Dr. Rick Strassman   Born in 1952 in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Rick Strassman is a clinical psychiatrist, psychedelic researcher, and author whose work has reshaped our understanding of consciousness. After graduating with honors from Stanford University in biological sciences and earning his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he built a distinguished career in psychiatry and psychopharmacology. His groundbreaking DMT studies at the University of New Mexico in the 1990s marked the first U.S.-approved psychedelic research in over two decades, earning him global recognition.   Dr. Strassman's books, including DMT: The Spirit Molecule (a quarter-million copies sold and translated into over a dozen languages) and DMT and the Soul of Prophecy, bridge science and spirituality. His latest work, My Altered States (December 2024), is an illustrated memoir exploring his personal experiences with altered states from birth to early adulthood. Currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Dr. Strassman resides in Gallup, New Mexico, where he continues to write and consult for psychedelic startups.   Connect with Dr. Strassman: Website: rickstrassman.com Books: Amazon Author Page Joe Rogan Appearances: 2022 Episode | Earlier Episode   Key Topics Discussed:   1. Genesis Through a Jewish Lens   Dr. Strassman shares how his return to Jewish texts after leaving Zen Buddhism in 1996 shaped his understanding of Genesis. Raised in a conservative Jewish household, he re-engaged with the Hebrew Bible as an adult, finding parallels between the vivid experiences of his DMT volunteers and the prophetic visions of biblical figures. Two Creation Narratives: Genesis 1 offers a cosmic, orderly account, while Genesis 2 zooms into a detailed, human-focused story. Dr. Strassman views them as complementary—an overview followed by specifics—reflecting a divine act of creation from nothing. Divine Order and Cause-and-Effect: He explores how Genesis reveals God's nature through the laws of cause and effect, suggesting that nature itself mirrors divine will.   2. The Fall: Free Will and Consciousness   The conversation delves into Adam and Eve's disobedience, which Dr. Strassman frames as the first exercise of free will with explicit consequences. He challenges the notion of the fruit as a psychedelic, instead emphasizing its role in shifting human perception from truth to the duality of good and evil. Shabbat as Eternal Rest: Jason raises the idea of the Sabbath lacking an “evening and morning” close, hinting at an eternal state. Dr. Strassman connects this to emulating God's rest, though he notes the Hebrew Bible avoids afterlife specifics.   3. Cain, Abel, and the Flood: Sin as a Virus   From Cain's envy-driven murder of Abel to the violence (Hebrew: Hamas) preceding the Flood, Dr. Strassman sees these stories as literal events encoding lessons about human nature and societal decay. The Flood, he suggests, was a divine reset prompted by humanity's failure to align with God's intent. Sons of Elohim: Theories range from angels to elites interbreeding with humans, disrupting divine order. Dr. Strassman remains open but grounded in the text's ambiguity.   4. Tower of Babel: Misunderstood Ambition   Dr. Strassman offers a fresh take on the Tower of Babel, arguing it's less about hubris and more about humanity's refusal to disperse post-Flood as God commanded. The scattering, he posits, fulfilled an original divine plan, with the tower as a symbol of misdirected unity.   5. Abraham's Covenant and Monotheism   The patriarchal narratives (Genesis 12–50) shift focus to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Dr. Strassman highlights Abraham's call as a pivotal revelation of monotheism, questioning why Abraham was chosen—a mystery deepened by Midrashic tales of his iconoclastic zeal. Egypt's Role: He attributes Egypt's prominence to its cultural dominance, akin to the modern U.S., rather than mystical significance.   6. Prophecy, Psychedelics, and the Living Word   Drawing from his DMT research, Dr. Strassman theorizes that prophetic visions might stem from endogenous DMT spikes, serving as a bridge for divine communication. He views Genesis as a prophetically received text, resonating with readers through its altered-state origins. Is the Bible Living? While Jason sees it as God's living word, Dr. Strassman approaches it as a guidebook to cause and effect, enduringly relevant but not inherently “alive” beyond its influence.   7. From Zen to Judaism   Dr. Strassman reflects on his shift from Zen Buddhism—where he felt alienated by iconography—to Judaism's monotheistic grounding. This transition, sparked by personal and professional changes, led him to a more literal, grounded study of biblical texts.   Memorable Quotes On DMT and Reality: “When volunteers said it felt ‘more real than real,' I learned to take it at face value—it opened up the strangest, most fascinating parts of their experiences.” On Genesis: “If you assume it's real, you can enter its world and learn what it's like. It's complex and rich in ways you miss if you see it as just archetypes.” On Prophecy: “The Hebrew Bible's appeal lies in its prophetic state—it's like reading a text that tingles with divine resonance.” On Monotheism: “It's not about whether it's wise—it's about whether it's true.”   Why You Should Listen   This episode is a rare fusion of psychedelic science and biblical exegesis, offering fresh insights into Genesis from a thinker who's explored both the outer edges of consciousness and the depths of Jewish tradition. Dr. Strassman's literal yet open-minded approach challenges conventional interpretations, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in spirituality, human potential, or the mysteries of existence.   Resources & Links Books by Dr. Rick Strassman: DMT: The Spirit Molecule – Buy on Amazon DMT and the Soul of Prophecy – Buy on Amazon My Altered States (Dec 2024) – Buy on Amazon Joe Rogan Episodes: 2022 Interview Earlier Interview Dr. Strassman's Website: rickstrassman.com   Call to Action   Enjoyed this deep dive into Genesis with Dr. Rick Strassman? On this episode of The Zach Show, Adam Butler and Zach discuss DMT, the psychedelic molecule that Adam claims saved his life. From suicidal despair in the desert to conversations with God, demons, and dimensional beings, Adam recounts his transformation through DMT with brutal honesty and poetic grit. We unpack the “Miracle Molecule” from every angle: the effects of endogenous DMT, why it shows up at birth and death, its role in altered states, and what happens when you smoke, drink, or breathe your way into it. Adam shares his thoughts on DMT as a tool for shadow work, transcendental sex, artistic creativity, and spiritual rebirth. We also examine the fine line between mysticism and madness, and why he believes DMT is not just a drug, but a key to consciousness itself. Whether you're a seasoned psychonaut or a curious skeptic, this conversation will challenge your assumptions about reality, identity, and the nature of the soul. Guest Bio: Adam Butler is a psychedelic philosopher and passionate DMT psychonaut focusing on mental health, neuroplasticity, self-exploration, and the extreme limits of human potential and ability. In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Rick Strassman, MD joins to discuss the topic of endogenous DMT. Dr. Strassman is adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule and The Psychedelic Handbook. His DMT and psilocybin studies in the early 1990s initiated the renewal of human research with psychedelics in the U.S. In this conversation, Dr. Strassman discusses the finer details of DMT, from endogenous production in humans and animals, to visionary experiences and theological implications. Dr. Strassman also covers the research that's been done regarding endogenous DMT, clarifying what we do and don't know about the role of the pineal gland and how this might relate to what is reported during near-death experiences. He also discusses the personal and relational quality of psychedelic experiences induced by DMT, mentioning that unitive mystical experiences were actually rare in the trials he conducted, with more experiences having a personal quality, drawing upon the life experiences and interests of the participants. In closing, Dr. Strassman shares his thoughts on the origins of the visions that many report during DMT use.    In this episode you'll hear: The overlap between psychedelic experiences and meditation techniques The relationship between fear, self-awareness, and difficult DMT experiences The placebo effect and psychedelic research Dr. Strassman's thoughts on non-hallucinogenic psychedelics DMT as a possible treatment for strokes to prevent damage and speed recovery Effects of microdosing in animals and humans   Quotes: “I think the best term for these compounds is psychedelic, which means mind manifesting or mind disclosing, because only one of our fifty-five or so normal volunteers had what one might call a mystical unitive state. … Everybody basically had an experience that was totally dependent on them. It was not inherent in the drug.” [9:45] “You could still speculate that to the extent that non-drug states resemble those brought on by giving DMT… that DMT plays a role in the production of those states. But the data aren't there yet. That's why we need more people doing this research.” [24:16] “If psychedelics are super placebos and if we have a psychedelic drug in our brain, it's attempting to speculate that normally the placebo effect could be mediated by endogenous DMT.” [27:42] “If you starve neurons of oxygen they start dying, but if you add DMT they survive much longer. So there seems to be some neuroprotective effect of DMT on ischemic damage to neurons, at least in the test tube.” [32:27]   Links: Dr. Strassman's website The Psychedelic Handbook by Dr. Strassman DMT: The Spirit Molecule by Dr. Strassman DMT and the Soul of Prophecy: A New Science of Spiritual Revelation in the Hebrew Bible by Dr. Strassman Dr. Strassman on FacebookPrevious episode: Exploring DMT Entities with Matthew Johnson, PhD Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Adam Quiney. Adam is an executive leadership coach specialising in working with the “Smartest People in the Room.” A former software developer and attorney, Adam's learned the hard way about the costs that come from keeping your heart safe and chasing after external rewards to feel whole and complete.  From love, Adam is connection, passion, presence, wit and brilliance. From fear, he is awkward, robotic, apathetic, irrelevant and arrogant. He's learned to embrace all these parts of himself, and works with others to do the same in their own lives. Living with his beautiful wife and their dog in Victoria, B.C, he is a man on a mission to bring the world to a more inspired and fully-expressed place.   In today's episode, Adam and I explore how to harness plant medicine to create meaningful impact in the world - in particular, discussing the power of plants as ancient “medicine” - in whatever form they are worked with, whether herbal, psychedelic, or archetypally.  We begin to understand how plant medicine can help us heal and step more deeply into the meaningful work we are born to do, and how we can integrate the journey with plant medicine to fully express our gifts.   What You'll Learn from this Episode:   The purpose of plant medicine is to help us to  heal. We think that we already have “medicine” in the world, but the medicine we know in the Western world is actually “drugs” that temporarily halt the symptoms and disconnect us Instead, “medicine” is something which supports us to do our own healing and reconnect us to our soul's wholeness.  This is often more challenging because we have to confront the wound that got created in us that has been stored for years Genuine healing, like this, can feel like we are getting ‘worse' before we get better - because we have to go through ‘breakdown' - or healing response - before the ‘breakthrough' - the hardest part is staying the course in the midst of us doing that whilst everyone else is popping pills We have learned to relate to ourselves as “this is just the way I am ” - which has us numb our possibility.  Possibility often looks like ‘impossibility' because it's found in the unknown and creates us to fear that “there's no way I can do that” What plant medicine does is to support us to come out of our conscious mind, drop our ego and personality - and connect with pure spirit - so that we can lean into the areas we have shut the door on - unconsciously - and visit them to reveal and face the fears we have and start to heal them, making them conscious The more healing we do - the more wounds we heal - the more we reconnect to who we were born as, and the more we can discover our true purpose. In fact, the more we heal, the more magnetic we become to be around, and the more of a clear channel we are as healing activators of others - aka the more we can step into our gifts as healers.   Resources and Things that We Spoke About:   Social: Tiktok - @archetypalapothecary Instagram - @iamnicolebarton Instagram - @archetypalapothecary You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/@secretwitchsociety Join our Secret Witch Society: www.facebook.com/groups/secretwitch  Next Crucible: Archetypal Aurum (Gold): www.nicolebarton.co.uk/aurum  Website: www.nicolebarton.co.uk  Books: Other Worlds by David Luke https://www.instagram.com/drdluke/?hl=en-gb  Books: The Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences by Rick Strassman https://www.rickstrassman.com/  Adam's website: http://adamquiney.com More information on Adam's journey - https://adamquiney.com/ayahuasca/  Adam's  podcast, The Transformational Leader: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/get-lit/id1386362594 Adam's  Facebook profile: https://www.facebook.com/aquiney Adam's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamquiney/ Adam's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adamquiney_/ Adam's  YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHz_zDZJOeYp9V-6I0P6qcw   Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know.   If you loved it, there's a fresh episode every other week - subscribe so you don't miss it!   Thank you, Nicole and Team Secret Witch xox

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Feb. 14, 2017This episode focuses on entheogens—psychedelic drugs that are known to cause “mystical states” of consciousness. Our hosts discuss Rick Strassman's work on DMT, but that is merely a subset of entheogen study. Current research in the fields of brain science, psychology, and religion are struggling to explain how entheogens and the experiences they cause should be understood. The dilemma of consciousness, more popularly known as the mind-body problem, is at the heart of the struggle. Do entheogens simply affect part of the brain and its chemistry triggering new states of consciousness from inside your head? Or do these drugs separate consciousness from the organ of the body we call the brain, verifying that consciousness is distinct from the brain? Are God and other supernatural beings experienced by people under the effect of entheogens just a product of the brain, or are they entities to be experienced by unhindered consciousness?Articles:Peter Bebergal, “Mystics Under the Microscope,” Search Magazine (January-February 2009): 35-39Ron Cole-Turner, “Entheogens, Mysticism, and Neuroscience,” Zygon, vol. 49:3 (September 2014): 642-651Leonard Hummel, “By its Fruits? Since prehistory, humans have used a range of psychedelic drugs for communion with the gods, connection with nature, or for the pure pleasure and wonder they generate as they transform the mind and the world. But one natural psychedelic in particular towers above the rest in its astonishing power to replace the normal waking world with a bizarre alternate reality replete with a diverse panoply of intelligent alien beings. As well as being the most powerful, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, more commonly known as DMT, is also the most common naturally-occurring psychedelic and can be found in countless plant species scattered across the Earth. DMT carries a profound message embedded in our reality, a message that we are now beginning to decode. In Alien Information Theory, neurobiologist, chemist, and pharmacologist, Dr. Andrew R. Gallimore, explains how DMT provides the secret to the very structure of our reality, and how our Universe can be likened to a cosmic game that we now find ourselves playing. Gallimore explains how our reality was constructed using a fundamental code which generated our Universe — and countless others — as a digital device built from pure information with the purpose of enabling conscious intelligences, such as ourselves, to emerge. You will learn how fundamental digital information self-organises and complexifies to generate the myriad complex forms and organisms that fill our world; how your brain constructs your subjective world and how psychedelic drugs alter the structure of this world; how DMT switches the reality channel by allowing the brain to access information from normally hidden orthogonal dimensions of reality. And, finally, you will learn how DMT provides the secret to exiting our Universe permanently — to complete the cosmic game and to become interdimensional citizens of hyperspace.Alien Information Theory is a unique account of this hidden structure of reality and our place within it, drawing on a diverse range of disciplines -- including neuroscience, computer science, physics, and pharmacology -- to carefully explain these complex ideas, which are illustrated with full-colour diagrams throughout.Dr. Andrew Gallimore is a computational neurobiologist, pharmacologist, chemist, and writer who has been interested in the neural basis of psychedelic drug action for many years and is the author of a number of articles and research papers on the powerful psychedelic drug, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and its effects on the brain and consciousness. In 2015, he collaborated with DMT pioneer Dr. Rick Strassman, author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule, to develop a pharmacokinetic model of DMT as the basis of a target-controlled intravenous infusion protocol for extended journeys in the bizarre worlds to which DMT gates access. His current interests focus on DMT and other psychedelic molecules as tool for gating access to otherwise inaccessible subjective worlds, their neuroscientific underpinning, and their possible ontological and metaphysical implications. He currently lives and works in Tokyo.https://www.buildingalienworlds.com/https://blossomanalysis.com/people/andrew-gallimore/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2790919/advertisement

Could DMT induce spiritual beliefs by activating a pre-existing disposition latent in the human mind? We examine this possibility in the astonishing conclusion to our exploration of why some people believe that the entities encountered while using the psychedelic DMT are real. After recapping previous coverage of DMT-induced spiritual belief, this episode pivots to examine traditionally religious people - Christians, Jews and Muslim - who are fundamentalists about DMT entities. Many of these people have not, and never will, experiment with psychedelics, but have nevertheless found a place within their conceptual schemas for admitting the reality of DMT entities as angels, demons or djinn. The episode then turns to the work of Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Rick Strassman. Strassman, who converted to Judaism as a result of his research and experimentation with DMT, makes the case for 'neurotheology' - the existence of a distinct neurological circuit inside the human brain that facilitates prophetic encounters. This episode ranges over modern Egypt, the rantings of Alex Jones, and the bizarre angelic manifestations in the Hebrew bible, to build the case that DMT spirituality may be an extreme manifestation of something deeply embedded inside the human psyche.

On the show this week, my good friend and fellow researcher Mike Mazzei joins me to discuss both UFOs and ancient history -- but not in the traditional "ancient alien" sense of the topic. Host of the podcast, Mind Escape, it is co-hosted by his cousin Maurice who is currently on hiatus, preparing their new documentary to soon release at the Roswell UFOXPO conference this month, March 10-12th! I will actually have a small guest spot in this documentary, explaining some of the strange things I've seen in the sky while living in Alaska, and there will be a whole roster of accredited scientists and philosophers, including the well-known Dr. Rick Strassman -- the first person to conduct clinical trials with DMT and popularize the monicker "spirit molecule". This documentary, instead of attempting to draw specific conclusions, will instead attempt to investigate and document the psychedelic, Carl-Jungian, dream-like qualities of the UFO experience that the nut-and-bolts mindsets tend to gloss over. This in mind, we take some time to go down the rabbithole of modern Ufology as we know it. We talk about some of the current news with spy-balloons and alleged craft shot down all over, we talk about some of the plot-holes in mainstream Ufology, some of the biases, and some of the underdeveloped angles of investigation -- like the psychedelic angle. That is to say: UFOs are not exclusively tied to the consumption of a psychedelic chemical, but rather, the experiences heavily mimic experiences of psychedelic chemicals. And as the cherry on top, there is of course a very long history of people specifically seeing UFOs on psychedelics in very impactful ways that go a bit beyond the notion of a mere fever dream. Lastly, we attempt to parse through some of the ancient history of psychedelic drugs and the sacramental, religious, mystical uses. What is "soma"? Why do so many people consider it a psychedelic, and could it have been cannabis, an ayahuasca analogue, a mushroom, or perhaps all of the above -- depending on the circumstances? We take a little bit of time to look through the uses of these chemicals and more in different cultures, and we consider what has become of all these traditions in the modern day. Join us! "As Within So Without: from UFOs to DMT" documentary, premiering at the Roswell UFOXPO March 10-12th 2023, including guest appearances from me -- Anthony Tyler, Martin Ferretti (as many of you will know from Black Hoodie Alchemy) and many impressive and accredited doctors and philosophers! Packed with information on psilocybin, LSD, DMT/ayahuasca, mescaline/peyote, ketamine, MDMA, ibogaine, 5-methoxy-DMT (“the toad”), and Salvia divinorum/salvinorin A, this book is your ultimate reference for understanding the science and history of psychedelics; discovering their potential to treat depression, PTSD, substance abuse, and other disorders, as well as to increase wellness, creativity, and meditation; learning how to safely trip and explaining what we know about microdosing; and recognizing and caring for negative reactions to psychedelics.Clinical research psychiatrist, founding figure of the American psychedelic research renaissance, and best-selling author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule, Dr. Rick Strassman shares his experience and perspectives as neither advocate nor foe of psychedelics in order to help readers understand the effects of these remarkable drugs.A native of Los Angeles, Rick Strassman obtained his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from Stanford University and his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He trained in general psychiatry at the UC Davis Medical Center and took a clinical psychopharmacology research fellowship at UC San Diego. At the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, his clinical research team discovered the first known function of melatonin in humans. Between 1990–95 he performed the first new US clinical research with psychedelic drugs in a generation. From 1995–2008, Strassman practiced general psychiatry in community mental health and the private sector. He has authored or coauthored nearly 50 peer-reviewed papers, has served as guest editor and reviewer for numerous scientific journals, and consulted to various government, nonprofit, and for-profit entities. Naturally occurring DMT may produce prophecy-like states of consciousness and thus represent a bridge between biology and religious experience• Reveals the striking similarities between the visions of the Hebrew prophets and the DMT state described by Strassman's research volunteers• Explains how prophetic and psychedelic states may share biological mechanisms• Presents a new top-down “theoneurological” model of spiritual experienceAfter completing his groundbreaking research chronicled in DMT: The Spirit Molecule, Rick Strassman was left with one fundamental question: What does it mean that DMT, a simple chemical naturally found in all of our bodies, instantaneously opens us to an interactive spirit world that feels more real than our own world? When his decades of clinical psychiatric research and Buddhist practice were unable to provide answers to this question, Strassman began searching for a more resonant spiritual model. He found that the visions of the Hebrew prophets--such as Ezekiel, Moses, Adam, and Daniel--were strikingly similar to those of the volunteers in his DMT studies. Carefully examining the concept of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible, he characterizes a “prophetic state of consciousness” and explains how it may share biological and metaphysical mechanisms with the DMT effect.Examining medieval commentaries on the Hebrew Bible, Strassman reveals how Jewish metaphysics provides a top-down model for both the prophetic and DMT states, a model he calls “theoneurology.” Theoneurology bridges biology and spirituality by proposing that the Divine communicates with us using the brain, and DMT--whether naturally produced or ingested--is a critical factor in such visionary experience. This model provides a counterpoint to “neurotheology,” which proposes that altered brain function simply generates the impression of a Divine-human encounter.Theoneurology addresses issues critical to the full flowering of the psychedelic drug experience. Perhaps even more important, it points the way to a renewal of classical prophetic consciousness, the soul of Hebrew Bible prophecy, as well as unexpected directions for the evolution of contemporary spiritual practice.Rick Strassman, M.D., is clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and president and cofounder of the Cottonwood Research Foundation. From 1990 to 1995 he performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the United States in more than 20 years, focusing on the powerful naturally occurring compound DMT. The author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule and coauthor of Inner Paths to Outer Space, he lives in Gallup, New Mexico.
