‘ENVY OF NONE' RELEASE NEW ALBUM AND NEW SINGLE ‘STYGIAN WAVES' ZOOM EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY RUSH GUITARIST ALEX LIFESON Envy Of None are the living, breathing definition of a supergroup. No other band on earth could rightly claim to have Alex Lifeson – one of rock's most influential visionaries – heading up guitar duties, with Andy Curran of Coney Hatch and Soho 69 overseeing bass/programming as well as producer extraordinaire Alfio Annibalini on keyboards. However, the star in this band could very well be its youngest member – American singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne – whose wonderfully emotive vocals are able to spin the music in new exciting directions that thrill to the core. Envy Of None are back with their much anticipated second album, Stygian Wavz, released on Kscope March 14th. To celebrate the announcement, Envy Of None have shared a new single – the album title track ‘Stygian Waves' – alongside a new music video. The 11-track album is available now in multiple formats including colored vinyl, black vinyl, CD, Blu-ray, digital and a deluxe-edition box set. After Rush ended, Alex Lifeson wasn't sure if he'd ever make music again. The Canadian guitarist had toured the world with his best friends from high school and changed rock music, so he felt like he had been there and done that. But when Alex heard a young singer named Maiah Wynne, he was transfixed by her voice and lyrics. That led him to form his new band, Envy of None. Alex sits down with Tom Power to talk about how that group came together, the early days of Rush, and how at 17 he decided he was destined for a life of rock and roll. If you enjoy this conversation, you might want to check out Tom's interview with Rush lead singer Geddy Lee or Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.
Way back in Episode 67, I had the pleasure of speaking with Maiah Wynne about her involvement with Envy of None, a project featuring Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson, on which she sang lead vocals. Maiah is back with her debut solo album, and the talented singer-songwriter has made an exquisite first solo impression with Out of the Dark, a heartbreakingly beautiful collection of songs that span 10 years of her life. In addition to discussing the album's songs track by track, Maiah was kind enough to talk about what's next for Envy of None, some of her struggles that led to the new album's themes, Lifeson's involvement on some of the songs on her album, learning about making videos, and more. This week we were touched by the spirit of radio! That's right: RUSH! We had to dig deep to get songs from these 3 Canadian phenoms outside of the mighty RUSH. Known for their hectic schedule and amazing work ethic of record-tour-record-tour throughout their 40+ year career, we were able to cobble together some unique songs outside their main gigs. Hope ya dig!New to InObscuria? It's all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their long careers. For over 40 years, the band Rush defined progressive rock. Often far from the mainstream, they made their own way by pushing back against management, the record industry, and even their own fans. In this episode, Derringer Discoveries welcomes longtime friend and Rush super-fan, John B. Derringer (via Zoom) to help the team discuss what the surviving members of Rush, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, have been doing since the passing of their long-time drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart. Also, Team Derringer chooses their favorite Rush songs from the band's immense catalog and Rush aficionado, John B. Derringer weighs in on each member's selection. John even shares a couple of his favorites as well! Post Episode Bonus: MAIAH WYNNE In March of 2022, Derringer Discoveries had the privilege of interviewing Maiah Wynne, a talented singer/songwriter/actor and, most recently, lead singer of Envy of None! Originally intended to be a loosely knit musical collaboration between Maiah Wynne and former Coney Hatch bassist, Andy Curran, the project soon grew into a full-fledged band once Curran's friend and former Rush guitarist, Alex Lifeson, joined the band. Team Derringer interviewed Maiah just prior to the release of Envy of None's eponymous album. Maiah joined Derringer Discoveries via Zoom from a remote town in Montana where she was on the set of a movie in production. Maiah has won many national and international contests during her career and has developed songs and videos in support of the Apollo moon landing, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education for young boys and girls as well as such worthy causes as mental health awareness and MMIW USA (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA). In this episode, you'll hear how Maiah got started as a musician, about her David vs. Goliath battle with Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation, and her plans to release an upcoming album of her own original compositions. Amid the covid-19 crisis, the pod rolls on with the inspiring story of a local musician. Maiah Wynne wrote her first song at age 7, started performing live at age 15 and is now – a short few years later - winning major recording and performing awards all over the country. The poise and passion of this amazing young woman is an inspiration.
