Mark Lambert, the recently retired head of the State Department's China House, joins Jim and Ray to share his insights into the impacts of America's radical new tariff policy from his extensive diplomatic career in Asia, including postings in China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan.Lambert, having just returned from a trip to Beijing, provides a unique perspective on how Chinese officials and experts are reacting to the escalating trade tensions between the two countries. His insights include:- President Xi Jinping's recent diplomatic tour of Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia indicates China's strategic move to contest U.S. influence in countries most affected by the tariffs- The challenges in U.S.-China negotiations, particularly the disconnect in diplomatic approaches between President Trump's preference for direct leader-to-leader negotiations versus China's more conservative impulses- Chinese confusion about what specifically the U.S. wants in trade negotiations - The importance of firmly opposing China's well-known harmful trade practices (technology theft, subsidized overcapacity) while not decoupling the entire U.S.-China economic relationship- China's potential retaliatory measures, including restricting rare earth metals exports and reconsidering U.S. Treasury bond holdings- The strategic value of U.S. alliances in the Indo-Pacific and concerns about how current trade policies might affect these relationships- The fragility yet resilience of China's economic and political system, including its cultural capacity for "eating bitterness" during difficult times- Lambert's surprising ease of travel to China as a private citizen, suggesting China's desire to encourage more American visitors despite tensionsFollow us on X, @IndoPacPodcast; or on LinkedIn or BlueSky at our show title, Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific?Follow Ray Powell on X (@GordianKnotRay) or on LinkedIn.Follow Jim Carouso on LinkedIn.Our podcast is produced by Ian Ellis-Jones and IEJ Media (on X @ianellisjones or LinkedIn).This podcast is sponsored by BowerGroupAsia, a strategic advisory firm that specializes in the Indo-Pacific.

Mark Lambert shared practical insights into why selling the tech alone won't cut it in today's market. Instead, he stresses the importance of focusing on outcomes that matter to your prospects, such as improving productivity, enhancing security, and solving tangible business challenges. As Mark explains, clients don't care whether you're using Office 365 or the latest security stack; they care about how you'll help their business thrive. This shift from a tech-focused to a problem-solving mindset is critical for any MSP aiming to scale sustainably.  We also discussed the right time for MSPs to invest in a dedicated sales function. For businesses under £1 million, Mark emphasised leveraging low-hanging fruit within existing accounts by deepening relationships and improving client retention. However, once an MSP is on the path to £5 million, building a dedicated sales strategy becomes a priority. This includes hiring the right salespeople, integrating them into the business culture, and aligning them with your values and goals. Mark highlighted the dangers of hiring a salesperson too early or without the proper alignment, which can lead to short-sighted sales tactics that undermine long-term client relationships.  One of the key takeaways from Mark Lambert's approach is the concept of consultative selling, which he believes should permeate the entire MSP—not just the sales team. Consultative selling is about deeply understanding your prospects and clients, their challenges, and their goals. Mark stressed that this isn't the job of one person; it's a company-wide mindset. Whether it's your service desk collecting insights from clients, your marketing team creating educational content, or your leadership team championing values, everyone plays a role in creating a culture of trust and value-driven relationships.  Mark and I explored the challenges of navigating cold outreach in a world where traditional methods like direct LinkedIn messages often fall flat. Instead, Mark advocates for a more tailored and personal approach. By leading with value—perhaps highlighting a productivity gap or a security concern specific to the prospect's business—you can initiate meaningful conversations without resorting to salesy tactics. Mark shared that while cold outreach still has its place, it's most effective when backed by thoughtful preparation and a clear understanding of the client's needs.  Another golden nugget from this conversation was the importance of discovery in the sales process. Mark stressed that a thorough discovery process helps uncover the true pain points of a business and builds trust along the way. He shared how asking the right questions—and going deeper when needed—can identify not only the problems but also the urgency behind them. This positions you as a trusted advisor rather than just another salesperson. Mark's advice: don't be afraid to ask questions and listen actively to uncover the core challenges holding businesses back.  One of the most memorable moments of the episode was Mark Lambert's reminder to always create urgency without applying pressure. It's about helping prospects see the value and importance of solving their challenges sooner rather than later. By presenting yourself as a problem-solver, you'll naturally guide the conversation to a point where prospects ask, “Is this something you can help me with?”—a clear invitation to close the deal.  Mark's practical tips and insights were incredibly valuable, and his perspective on embedding a consultative selling approach across the whole MSP is a game-changer. If you're serious about scaling your MSP, this episode is packed with actionable advice to help you move forward.  Before you go, don't forget to check out another related episode, EP174 - Ask Stuart #12 - Why You Don't Need a Salesperson Now… Or Ever with Ian Luckett & Stuart Warwick. It's a brilliant companion piece to today's conversation, exploring how MSPs can maximise their sales efforts even without a dedicated salesperson in the early stages.  To continue the conversation with Mark Lambert or chat with him on how to get started closing deals by solving problems, book a slot directly on his calendar by clicking HERE.  You can also connect with Mark Lambert on LinkedIn, simply click HERE. Or you can also check out his website HERE.  Connect on LinkedIn HERE with Ian and also with Stuart by clicking this LINK  And when you're ready to take the next step in growing your MSP, come and take the Scale with Confidence MSP Mastery Quiz. What would you do? What will you do? In the election run-up, Peter & Nathan are talking about musicals that deal with political unrest and social change (don't worry, it's still fun!). We begin with the 1966 Broadway classic Cabaret, one of the darkest, kinkiest, and most-enduring musicals of all time.   We talk about: – Willkommen / Two Ladies / The Money Song: The "decadence" depicted by the emcee and the performers of the Kit Kat Klub (KKK, anyone?) in 1930s Berlin on the eve of Nazism. Does Cabaret hold this very queer decadence as responsible for the rise of fascism, or is there something deeper at work? – Married / So What / What Would You Do?   Bob Fosse's 1972 film version of Cabaret eliminates most of the traditional musical theatre story exemplified in the romance between Fraulein Schneider & Herr Schultz. But these two characters—and the songs that Kander & Ebb wrote for them—carry much of the show's political weight – and its emotional heart. Is Fraulein Schneider secretly Cabaret's protagonist? – Don't Tell Mama & Cabaret:  We talk about one of Cabaret's most well-known characters, Sally Bowles. What does she mean when she sings that "life is a cabaret?" – Tomorrow Belongs to Me:  The incredible music of Cabaret – hymns, patriotic anthems, folk songs and music hall ditties – raises provocative questions about entertainment, pleasure, emotional release, and the rise of demonic ideologies. Religion traffics in some of the same territory. Is good music morally neutral... or not?   You'll hear Joel Grey, Jill Haworth, Lotte Lenya, Jack Gilford and the cast of the 1966 Original Broadway Cast – as well as Mark Lambert on the 1972 film soundtrack singing “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”.

Lambert explains that their platform connects with over 250 different source tools, from threat modeling to endpoint security, to provide comprehensive visibility and risk scoring. This integration is crucial for automating remediation workflows downstream and supporting various use cases, including vulnerability management and software supply chain security. One of the core strengths of ArmorCode's platform is its ability to ingest data from a multitude of sources, normalize it, and contextualize the risk for better prioritization. Lambert notes that understanding both the technical and business context of vulnerabilities is essential for effective risk management. This dual approach helps organizations avoid the 'fire drill' mentality, focusing instead on business-critical assets first. The conversation also touches on the breadth of ArmorCode's integrations, which include not just technical tools but also commercial and open-source threat intelligence feeds. This variety allows for a robust and nuanced understanding of an organization's security posture. By correlating data across different tools using AI, ArmorCode helps in identifying vulnerabilities and weaknesses that could otherwise remain hidden.Lambert emphasizes the platform's ability to streamline interactions between security and development teams. By bringing together data from various sources and applying risk scoring, ArmorCode aids in engaging development teams effectively, often leveraging integrations with tools like Jira. This engagement is pivotal for timely remediation and reducing organizational risk. One of the exciting developments Lambert shares is ArmorCode's recent launch of AI-driven remediation capabilities. Breaking news this morning, Pope Francis removes Bishop Strickland from his diocese. We discuss this with our special guest, Mark Lambert, while also discussing his fascinating journey back to the Catholic faith. We navigate through the heart-rending pilgrimage to Lourdes, a challenge from a Baptist friend, and the critical aid of Catholic Answers in shaping his understanding of the Church in today's world. As we allow Mark's story to unfold, we also address the elephant in the room - the tremors shaking the foundations of the Catholic Church due to recent controversial decisions by Pope Francis. We grapple with the implications of the trans baptism controversy and Francis's removal of Bishop Strickland. And in the face of all these, we marvel at the resilience of the faithful, who stick by the Church.Mark's story serves as a microcosm of the future of Catholicism. Listen to our discussion on the need for smaller Catholic communities to live out the faith and how the lockdown has been a dress rehearsal for the future. Whether you're scared by the recent changes in the Catholic Church, inspired by the power of faith, or curious about the role of evangelization in today's world, this episode is a treasure trove of insights.********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community:  https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comStore:  https://avoiding-babylon.sellfy.store/RSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV:  https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee:  https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! First up is Mark Lambert, a seven-time world BBQ champion who's won the overall title at Memphis in May twice and is reigning world pork shoulder champion. Mark and his Sweet Swine O' Mine team is ready for another title run in a few weeks on the banks of the Mississippi and he tells us about preparations for Memphis in May and what he envisions as the BBQ Major returns to Tom Lee Park.  Next up is a brief-but-fun segment with St. Louis Cardinals' pitcher Adam Wainwright. During an injury rehab assignment recently in Springfield, Missouri, “Waino” talked about his love for BBQ, what he likes to cook in his backyard and what kinds of smokers and grills he has.  Then it's one of the best to ever light a pit as Rod Gray, CEO of the Kansas City Barbeque Society joins us. Rod, by the way, is not officially retired from competition cooking, it's just that his job can be a handful. The timing of Rod's appearance coincides with the recent announcement that the 2023 KCBS World Invitational will be held Aug. 11-13 in Mayetta, Kansas. Rod takes us through how the decision was made to put the $60,000 event in August and why in Kansas. Martin Glynn: Auckland Transport's controversial parking strategy delayed until after local body elections

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Auckland Transport's controversial parking strategy has been pushed back until after the local body elections, when there's a risk of it being scrapped. The hot button policy would see AT removing parking spaces across the city for cycleways and bus lanes, and charging at park and ride stations, in a bid to unlock choked roads and reduce congestion. But the Herald can reveal that public feedback has drawn strong opposition and there are also concerns about the level of engagement with Māori. The policy is now in danger because only a slim majority of councillors currently favour rewriting the city's parking rules, and that could change after the polls close on October 8. The parking strategy is one of the biggest transport upheavals undertaken by AT since the Super City was formed in 2010. It works to the principle that kerbside parking is the "lowest priority" on arterial roads and will automatically be removed for cycleways and busways, except under exceptional circumstances. Busy arterial roads like Mt Eden Rd could lose car parks for cycleways and bus lanes. Photo / Peter Meecham Auckland Mayor Phil Goff trashed the first version that gave AT unfettered power to remove parking as "totally arrogant". The council's planning committee was divided by 13 votes to 10 to endorse a revised version for public consultation that allows for parking plans in town centres. Acting AT chief executive Mark Lambert and planning boss Jenny Chetwynd said gaps in public feedback and engagement with Māori require more work meaning the strategy will be delayed until February next year. AT plans to go back out to consultation in West and South Auckland and try to repair relations with mana whenua, mataawaka and the Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB), which advances the interests of Māori at Auckland Council. Public feedback on the strategy attracted 943 submissions and showed strong opposition. Planning committee chairman Chris Darby. Photo / Dean Purcell Supporters of the parking strategy said it was required to address climate change, it should be implemented as fast as possible and parking should be banned on all main roads. The Automobile Association has mixed views on the strategy, saying it makes sense to remove parking on arterial roads, but concerned the strategy could later be extended to residential streets where parking is a real challenge. The AA is also concerned about the double whammy of AT removing car parks and new Government-imposed rules that mean developers no longer have to provide off-street parking. Chetwynd said the council advised her it wanted the issue delayed until after the election to get the new mayor and the council's eye across it. Planning committee chairman Chris Darby is also seeking an assurance from AT that it has engaged properly with mana whenua and mataawaka when the strategy comes back to his committee for a final decision. Documents obtained by the Herald under the Official Information Act show the AT board was keen to get final approval from the council before the election, but last night Chetwynd said the most important thing is the council is comfortable with where the strategy lands. Auckland Transport's parking plan involves removing kerbside parking for cycling and bus lanes. Photo / Brett Phibbs AT is on the back foot with Māori following a mana whenua hui and talks with the IMSB. The Official Information Act documents show Māori at the hui expressed serious concerns about the impact of removing car parks for less able-bodied kaumatua and kuia and tougher enforcement creating a cycle of debt for Māori. After two members of the IMSB, Tau Henare and Karen Wilson, voted against endorsing the strategy for public consultation in March, the AT board called for a "leader to leader" meeting to address IMSB concerns about the engagement process. An email from the AT officer overseeing the parking strategy, Andrew McGill, said this is "no fault of ours, but we need to make sure we repair the relationship. Their votes will be critical for the final approval". Chetwynd said mana whenua input is critical for AT to have a Te Ao Māori perspective, saying it is an ongoing learning experience for the council body and Māori. She wanted to understand the depth of Māori concerns and was "absolutely" prepared to make changes to the strategy. "We have to not just learn from Māori, but all sectors of the community," Chetwynd said. Independent Māori Statutory Board chairman David Taipari. Photo / Dean Purcell IMSB chairman David Taipari told the Herald a meeting took place following the board directive with senior AT staff to discuss poor engagement and the need for it to be done better. "Some stuff has been done recently, but it is still not good enough," said Taipari, saying in his view Henare and Wilson are unlikely to change their position when the matter returns to the planning committee. Said Lambert: "We do need more time to progress the strategy and try and get a more balanced approach, looking to listen more and make changes to the strategy over the next few months." - Bernard Orsman, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

HELLO MR GAS MAN! Talking Bottom prepares the steaming cold tea for a very special guest. Olivier award nominated veteren of stage and screen, Mark Lambert brings his frying pan and joins us for a chat. He tells all about his career, early days at Uni with Rik, working as a character actor, plummeting from a building in Cracker, having "Gas Man" yelled at him and of course, his role as quite possibly Bottom's most memorable guest star.
