Myron Johnson of Minneapolis, former artistic director for Ballet of the Dolls, recommends “The Conference of the Birds” from Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre. The dance piece is based on an epic poem by 12th-century Persian mystic Farīd al-DīnʿAṭṭār.“It's been performed and created by one of my absolute favorite artists in this community, Susana di Palma,” Johnson said. “I can't imagine anyone taking this story and doing an interpretation any better than Susana and her live musicians and singers and flamenco dancers and original music.”“The Conference of the Birds” plays Feb. 10-11 at the Cowles Center in Minneapolis.Minneapolis resident Mary Thomas is an art historian and arts administrator. She is looking forward to “In the Middle of Somewhere,” an exhibit by artist Martin Gonzales. An alum of the University of Minnesota's art department, Gonzales is based in Massachusetts. Thomas sees Gonzales “grappling with questions of how he takes up space and how he can occupy space in different ways.” “The sculptures are a way to think through and meditate on some of those questions through his own life and his own experience,” Thomas said. The exhibit is on display at the Silverwood Park Visitor Center in St. Anthony through Feb. 29. Linda LeGarde Grover, a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa in northern Minnesota, is a professor emeritus of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She's very pleased to recommend the Indigenous Writer Series at AICHO in Duluth. The series features Indigenous writers from around the region. “Some of them will actually have drawings for some of their books, and the community will get to listen to them, ask questions of them and especially hear them talking about their writing,” Grover said. The event Saturday will include authors Tashia Hart of Red Lake Nation and Staci L. Drouillard of Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, from 2-4 p.m. at the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center in Duluth.

Due to the difficulty authorities had with nailing down a motive, they found themselves in a dubious position; both everyone… and no-one, was a suspect. However, with one key piece of evidence left at the scene, authorities believe they are on the brink of bringing this killer to justice, but still need the publics help to close this case, nearly 30 years later. In Beyond the Door of No Return: Confronting Hidden Colonial Histories through Contemporary Art (Skira, 2021), art historian and curator Selene Wendt presents lesser-known tales of anticolonial defiance in artworks and marginal histories worldwide. The artists featured in this book create compelling narratives that shed light on the entangled colonial histories that connect Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. Collectively, these artists provide crucial insight into some of the lesser-known aspects of colonial history, such as Norwegian involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. They describe the lives of freedom fighters such as Venus Johannes, Mary Thomas, Olaudah Equiano and Anna Heegaard. By highlighting the stories of those who have been historically silenced, we encounter a more nuanced understanding of colonial history and the factors that have contributed to the continued effects of colonialism today, most evidently witnessed in the prevalence of institutional, systemic and everyday racism, poverty and forced migration. The book includes artists John Akomfrah, La Vaughn Belle, Manthia Diawara, Jeannette Ehlers, Michelle Eistrup, Sasha Huber, Oceana James, Patricia Kaersenhout, Grada Kilomba, Suchitra Mattai and Alberta Whittle. Holiday Powers is Assistant Professor of Art History at VCUarts Qatar. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary art in Africa and the Arab world, postcolonial theory, and gender studies. During Hart"s interview on the Beltway Beef Podcast, she explains how this rule will create legal liability for producers and why the NCBA aims to derail it.
The National Cattleman"s Beef Association joined forces with their state affiliates in recent days, offering an amicus brief to the Supreme Court regarding the Sackett v. EPA case that will be argued later this year at the U.S. Supreme court.
This woman, Mary Thomas, a courageous 19th-century slave from St. Croix (now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands), rebelled against indignity, along with two other women leaders, Agnes and Mathilda, "the three queens," to spark the largest labour revolt in Danish colonial history, an uprising known as the "Fireburn," in which fifty plantations and most of the town of Frederiksted on St. Croix were burned. This rebellion was brutally suppressed, and the three queens were arrested, tried and convicted. They served their prison terms in Copenhagen, a little over a mile from where the statue stands today.
The following episode is the second session of “Yet Even Now,” a conference centered on the book of Joel that Dayton Women in the Word had planned to host in March 2020. These audio sessions may be used along with the “Yet Even Now Podcast Companion Guide” and function as a 5-week personal or group study in the book of Joel. The Companion Guide offers a Read/Study/Listen plan to lead you through the content, and encourages you to learn about and use helpful study tools each week.Although we could not meet in person for this conference as planned, we pray these sessions prepared for the weekend will bless all the podcast listeners. Mary Thomas wants to live in a world where the church is undivided, so that we can be a light to the world. When she's not praying and studying her Bible, you can find her in her garden. She loves flowers, various leaf texture and color changes and how intricate they are! She's taught Precept International curriculum for over 20 years, serves in her church missions field in Africa, and intercedes for many. Her favorite Scripture is Philippians 2:1-7: "Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.”Podcast Navigation: 00:00 Introduction01:30 Joel 1:4-2005:00 Why Study the Old Testament?07:00 Curses for Disobedience11:00 What is God saying to us today?12:00 Joel's Instructions14:50 Who/what caused the plague?17:12 Locust Description19:15 The Wrath of God20:30 The Locust Plague in Egypt22:45 The Life Stages of a Locust25:07 First Instruction: Awake27:16 How is sin like a locust?30:35 What can we do about sin?42:00 Lamenting with Sackcloth43:15 The Locusts' Impact on Worship47:00 How fresh is your oil?49:22 Second Instruction: Repent52:04 Ways to Fast 52:30 Why fast?56:57 Joel's One Line Prayer58:00 BenedictionOn this episode, Mary talks about the following references and resources:Yet Even Now Podcast Companion GuideDonate to DWITWJoel 1:4-201 Corinthians 10:11-12Deuteronomy 28:11-472 Timothy 3:16-17Daniel 9:1-19Joel 2:25Isaiah 45:5-7Exodus 10:1-20Genesis 1-2Genesis 4:7Matthew 12:34Proverbs 4:231 John 1:8-91 Corinthians 10:13Proverbs 28:13Psalm 103:11-12Psalm 51Hebrews 12:1-2Ephesians 2:6James 4:7James 1:22-25Ephesians 4:272 Corinthians 10:4-51 Corinthians 5:6Philippians 2:17Psalm 92:101 Samuel 2:12 Corinthians 1:21-22Psalm 36:5-7Isaiah 58:4-12Matthew 6:16-18Matthew 13:1-30Psalm 30:11-13 Current African Locust Plague Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough by Elmer TownsFasting by Jentezen Franklin
