Get more at wickedproblems.earthSo much is happening that it's hard to drink from the firehose of US executive orders on energy and crazy chaos orangutang screeches on presidential letterhead, UK debates about growth versus climate, and parsing the statements of tech broligarchs to the only people left who can hold them accountable – their investors during earnings calls this week. And that's before we get to Heathrow and a Scottish court ruling that the Rosebank field was unlawfully given permission because it ignored carbon emissions – which I'm sure peaked the interest of lawyers for the 16 Just Stop Oil protestors facing some of the longest sentences ever handed down for non-violent protests. So we've got a mega-episode for you this Friday the last day of January. We've got climate comedian and UCL academic Matt Winning, along with climate journalist and BlueSky maestro Dave Vetter to help make sense of all of that. And we've got Adam Grant Bell of the UK consultancy Stonehaven, who after decades in and out of government has a pretty good sense for these things, setting some odds on what's going to happen this year in getting enough renewables built to achieve the UK government's goals of hitting clean power by 2030. And he thinks the UK government might this year finally move away from a national price for electricity and to a system where cheaper electricity from things like wind and solar will be reflected locally, something Octopus's Greg Jackson and others have been calling for and could radically change decisions about where power gets generated and where you site things like factories that will use it.And because we can't ignore that chaos orangutang with nuclear weapons, US-based Financial Times journos Amanda Chu and me aul mucker Jamie Smyth of Energy Source join us.00:13 Government's Role in the Chaos 00:18 Trump's Impact on Renewable Energy 00:45 Weekly Recap and Upcoming Topics 01:11 Elon Musk02:31 Climate and Energy Policies04:37 Interview with FT Journalists 05:49 Tracking Executive Orders 09:41 Impact on Renewable Energy Projects 10:29 Texas and Clean Energy Growth 12:48 Energy Policy and Executive Authority 13:49 Challenges in Renewable Energy Development 15:58 Geopolitical Factors and Market Dynamics 20:11 Future of Renewable Energy Auctions 36:55 Enhanced Geothermal and Government Policies 37:31 Small Modular Reactors and Long Duration Storage 38:22 Chancellor's Speech and Planning Reforms 39:30 Environmental and Climate Change Debates 40:37 Rosebank Ruling and Oil and Gas Projects 42:48 Interview with Dave Vedder and Matt Winning 44:34 AI Advancements and Energy Implications 53:46 Heathrow Expansion and Sustainable Aviation Fuel 01:04:43 Closing Thoughts and Upcoming EventsAll the TunesIf you're enjoying the tunes, check out the whole outro playlist:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AWvHdqqNAUCJcByQEokut?si=2f56f6d68d2c4bff Hosted on Acast. Please note that this episode will self-destruct some time around 2090... along with the rest of humanity. As COP moves on having once again failed to reverse the climate catastrophe playing out in front of us we speak to Matt Winning a climate scientist who delivers his environmental message through comedy. The perfect guest for this podcast. Is this our Christmas special? Maybe. If it is, then what better message for humankind than the need to unite behind one common goal... saving your planet. Clothes for pets. Some things will never make sense. Faced with the more absurd side of modern civilisation, what are we to do? The secret, according to this week's guest, is to find the funny anyway. In fact, he's made it his job. Integrating Matt's green split personality: Climate chaos isn't funny (but we should still make jokes about it) …and here's what it means for politics: Counting trees, pricing yachts, modelling CCS and other economic puzzles The art of climate conversations: keep them light! Here's the set list for this show: The Star Wars effect of humour in climate communication ‘it's more visceral' – having a child and emotional engagement Why we shouldn't find hope in younger generations Climate scientists are getting pissed off… As well as his work as an academic economist, he is also a stand-up comedian who has delivered four sold-out Edinburgh Festival shows about climate change, and the author of the book Hot Mess: What on Earth can we do about Climate Change? Matt Winning is the Senior Research Fellow at the Bartlett School of the Environment, Energy and Resources, University College of London. To find out how (and why) to make light of the climate struggle for good, join Matt Winning on this episode of Conversations on Climate. It's hard as academics, you can't be making decisions about one technology in a positive way and other technologies in a negative light just because that's how you feel. ... there's choices you're constantly making when you're having conversations about whether you're making things more or less depressing. And it's actively trying to keep the positive parts of your brain engaged and trying to constantly engage other people and their positive parts of the brain ... … basically I'm saying go and talk to some comedians. Ever heard of climate change comedy? Here's the idea. The climate crisis dominates our news. But more and more, messages about action are ignored. Fatalism is growing. People seem frozen with the scale of the problem. It's clear we need new ways to tackle these tough conversations. In this episode, STS's very own Grace Tyrrell explores the growing niche of climate change comedy. With her guest Dr Matt Winning, an environmental researcher and comedian, Grace shows us how climate change comedy works and she explores the question of how these two ideas can fit together. Grace is finishing her master's degree in science communication with us. After interviewing Matt Winning about the theory, Grace asks a set of fellow students about the practice. Does climate change comedy work? Do it inform the head? Does it engage the heart? Does it lead keep up momentum in climate action? Thanks to her guest, Dr Matt Winning and to fellow STS students Joe Woof, Steph Hawes, Megan Thomas, Gusti Ayu Ismayanti, Annabel Bourne for their time. I suppose if we've always wanted the government to be more transparent, we can't be too upset that Suella Bravermen now wants to share her emails with everyone. It's impressive to get the sack from a job after 6 weeks, be back in it within 6 days and then be even worse at it, but our Home Secretary really does excel at being a truly terrible human being. We are currently facing a global climate emergency. You've probably noticed. But why does the end of the world need to be so depressing? Hot Mess aims to both lighten the mood and enlighten listeners on climate change. This is an audiobook for people who care about climate change but aren't doing much about it, helping listeners understand what the main causes of climate change are, what changes are needed and what they can (and cannot) do about it. But, most importantly, it is an audiobook that'll help people find the comedy in climate change, because if we can do that, well, we can do bloody anything.

Is Stuart Laws an absurdist rambler who froths up a load of increasingly hilarious nonsense whilst honking in a gilet? Or is he an astute and quite private man who started a production company when he was 18, and went on to produce his own sitcom Grave new World (Amazon Prime) as well as directing James Acaster's “Repertoire” (Netflix) and countless other standup specials? It'd be great if the answer was “neither” wouldn't it? But it's clearly both.We talk about “The Prestige” as it pertains to stand-up shows; what it means to be both producer and director of one's own work; and what makes other comics attractive assets to his company Turtle Canyon. We also cover openness, privacy and what shocks him about other comedians…25 mins of extra content available exclusively to the Insiders Club includes Stuart on the different ways he directs comics, with reference to James Acaster and Joel Dommett; how to direct without imposing; his social media and TikTok sketch strategies, and some insights on the only show ever made about Wario. Join hosts Xand and Rochelle for Episode 2 of Public Health Disrupted, the brand new podcast from UCL Health of the Public. In this month’s episode, we speak to award-winning comedian and author Laura Lexx and London-based Scottish comedian and UCL academic Dr Matt Winning, to explore how comedy and humour can be used to improve health for all. Laughter is good for your health - a good laugh can reduce stress. It can also be used as a tool to reduce the stigma of people discussing issues or raise the profile of topics to improve the health of the public. In this episode, Laura and Matt discuss their personal experiences of using comedy to address serious topics including mental health, infertility and climate change in their stand-up shows. Both comedians have created a space in the world of comedy to talk about public health issues, but what about the other way around? Is there space for comedy in public health? If there’s a question you’d like our hosts or guests to answer, please email us at healthofpublic@ucl.ac.uk or tweet @UCLHealthPublic. New episodes will be made available monthly via the UCL Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Podcast and Google Podcast. Find the transcript and more information on the UCL Health of the Public website.
This week Ian McMillan and guests are turning to humour to help us get through difficult times. If 'comedy equals tragedy plus time' - how much time do we need to make something funny? Or is it more dangerous to leave a topic too long, and risk your audience moving on? Because in comedy, timing is everything... Joining Ian are Ben Schott, the author of two novels set in the Jeeves and Wooster universe on why so many people have turned to P.G Wodehouse during lockdown, comedian Grainne Maguire on the challenges of performing to masked audiences and how comedy will adapt to socially distanced audiences, Kate Fox has written us a brand new poem on why she's found it difficult to be funny recently, and Dr Matt Winning explains how he makes climate change funny - and why humour might be the key to making people care about the planet. Presenter: Ian McMillan Producer: Cecile Wright
A man on a mission, comedian and academic Dr Matt Winning is an expert on climate change and on making the apocalypse funny. We explore how to make a show educational without being worthy, finding purpose in struggle, and how to survive as a comic when you're not motivated to quit your day job. We also dig into the maintenance of optimism when your crises are about something a little more meaningful than comedy, and gloss over the difference between polar bears and pall-bearers…25 mins of extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club include Matt on “coming out” as a scientist in comedy, how his love of the surreal clashes with the mainstream direction of his mission, and we get a morsel of the inside story on the infamous “Bearpit Podcast Podcast”.
