In the final episode of season three of the Conversations on Climate podcast, Chris Caldwell sits down with John Mullins, Associate Professor of Management Practice in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, to explore the realities of entrepreneurship. Together, they dive into thought-provoking topics like whether society is overselling the entrepreneurial dream, the myths surrounding venture capital, and how entrepreneurs can create meaningful impact in today's world. "For entrepreneurs who want to make an impact on the climate challenges we face today? I think my advice to them would be, don't worry about trying to solve the entire climate. … rather carve out some little piece of that where you bring the skills and insights to that piece of the problem that you think you have a, technology or a business model or some other approach that can solve that piece of the problem if if we have a thousand entrepreneurs, each solving a little part of the problem we'll make a lot of progress." This engaging conversation unveils six key entrepreneurial mindsets, shares actionable insights for navigating challenges, and offers strategies to help entrepreneurs focus on solving real problems. Here's a shocking fact, reps don't have to be nice in order to make a deal. Unconsciously, your need to be liked is turning you into a pushy salesperson. Listen to this episode with my guest Chris Caldwell to help you stop making this sales mistake. Chris Caldwell's Background Chris Caldwell is a sales trainer and expert who runs “Sell As You Are,” a company that helps sales professionals succeed by embracing their authentic selves. With experience coaching youth soccer and leading sales retreats, Chris has deep insights into human behavior and the psychological needs that drive success. He focuses on aligning beliefs and behaviors with genuine intent, offering practical strategies to foster personal power, authenticity, and commitment in sales teams. Unmet Needs in Sales How do sales reps manifest their unmet needs in sales contexts? Chris provides an analogy of parents at a youth soccer game, demonstrating how people often project their unfulfilled emotional needs onto external situations or people. This behavior negatively impacts sales performance and client relationships. The Power of Setting the Frame To set clear expectations and agendas with prospects, try using Chris's framework for sales conversations. His framework allows you to stay confidently in control throughout the sales process. The Importance of Getting to the Truth The primary objective of every first discovery call should be to uncover the truth of the prospect's needs and situation. Chris stresses the significance of ensuring honest exchanges to facilitate genuine progress and decision-making. “It is in the nature of executives to get distracted because they have a hundred things they're responsible for, and the problem you're solving is likely one of fifty they're trying to address. At the same time, if you do not keep them on the leash, if you do not keep them on your calendar, it is in their nature to deprioritize you. And you cannot blame them; you can only blame yourself.” - Chris Caldwell. In this episode, Chris Caldwell introduces Tom Grundy, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), who shares his insights on the future of flight and the role of hybrid aircraft technology in creating a more sustainable aviation industry. The Airlander-10, HAV's iconic aircraft, represents a new category in aviation that promises to make air travel more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly. Tom discusses the potential of hybrid aircraft to connect underserved regions, create new economic opportunities, and reduce the carbon footprint of air travel. He outlines HAV's vision for redefining the skies and paving the way for a greener future in aviation. "…when I talk emotionally about what we're doing in the UK, it's because I see the power of what we're doing to create, something new for the next generation…" "so we can do some of the things other aircraft can't. For passengers. It's really good because it means that we can't squeeze you in three abreast with the seat there in front of you…so you're going to get more space…" "…the kicker is that that carbon dioxide is doing more damage by being emitted in the stratosphere rather than at ground level. And the contrails that are behind the aircraft, they're a big deal. We're only just really working out how big." "…it's a really optimistic project. This is about creating better connections for a more sustainable future, not just delivering the same connections with a bit less CO2…it's something we can do here and now…" This talk was given by Tom Grundy, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles, at the London Business School as part of their The Future of Flight: Rethinking the Skies Series on Wednesday, 26th June 2024, for more information on the series contact Christopher Moseley, Senior PR Manager, London Business School. In this fascinating episode of the Conversations on Climate, host Chris Caldwell is joined by Donald Crilly, an expert in linguistics and cognitive psychology and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship; Chair, Strategy and Entrepreneurship Faculty at London Business School. Together, they explore how language shapes our understanding of complex issues like climate change and sustainability. Crilly explains how our brains process language and how metaphors can be used to influence our thinking and decision-making. He also discusses the role of curiosity and personal resilience in driving sustainable business behaviours. Drawing on his research, Crilly shares insights on how corporate leaders can use language to communicate more effectively with stakeholders and drive positive change. He also offers a tip for "hacking" the way humans think about time to promote long-term decision-making. Throughout the conversation, Crilly and Caldwell delve into the intersection of language, psychology, and sustainability, shedding light on how our minds make sense of the world around us. Added personal resilience. This is what I teach a lot of my students, that the difference between those who fundamentally fail or those who fundamentally ultimately succeed… The idea would be to combine the sense of the proximity of the future with the sense that you're able to do something about it… If I can at least influence how leaders think, if I can increase their curiosity, I'm fundamental really happy about that… So tune in to this episode of Conversations on Climate to unravel the mysteries of the mind and learn more about how we can use language to drive positive change for people and the planet. In this inspiring conversation, Chris Caldwell talks with Ben Tolhurst a former corporate executive who left his high-paying job to become a full-time sustainability activist. Ben shares his personal journey, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned along the way. They discuss the importance of corporate activism, the need for businesses to take a stand on social and environmental issues, and the role of individuals in driving change. "Those people were business people. They were CEOs. They were owners. They were founders, they were employees. And they were holding placards and waving banners, stood outside demanding no new fossil fuels. So this concept that business and activism don't fit together isn't quite right." "You know, this is this is a war effort that we need a marshall plan that we need, and we have to put aside political differences, ideological differences, business versus academics versus anyone else." In this episode of Conversations on Climate, Chris Caldwell sits down with Nick Molden, the CEO of Emissions Analytics, to discuss the dark side of electric vehicles (EVs), the importance of data integrity, and the future of transportation. Nick, a self-proclaimed data-driven environmentalist, shares his insights on the parallels between the dieselgate scandal and the current climate change debate, and the challenges of balancing human progress with environmental sustainability. They also delve into the complexities of tire emissions, the benefits and drawbacks of synthetic fuels, and the potential of nuclear power as a solution to the CO2 problem. This thought-provoking conversation aims to answer the question Why Electric Vehicles Are NOT The Future (Yet)? and the answers will leave you questioning the assumptions you have about the future of transportation and the role of data in shaping environmental policy. Stay tuned in to learn more! …and what's happened for 30 years is we've offshored CO2 production… it's just being produced in other countries. We have moved things progressively offshore in this perverse world where you set something up as a metric which you know is not true. You lead to perverse outcomes, and it's exactly the same as diesel. You set up a test, a measure which you knew to be wrong. I have no doubt if if the European authorities were sufficiently dogged about it, they could force every vehicle on the road to be electric. Question is, at what price? So if we were to scrap all the environmental things today, it would be great for today and terrible for people tomorrow… Highlights: 00:02 Challenges in sourcing uranium and handling its depletion and waste. 02:30 Environmental progress through technological advance 07:26 Uncertainty about legality of defeat devices in Asia 09:47 Electric vehicles are not zero emission 14:12 Europe's regulatory approach is driven by politics and industry ties 16:45 Data collection and analysis challenges in complex systems 20:52 Tires pose complex problems for all vehicles 22:47 Tires from cars contribute to global environmental pollution. 26:40 Properly pricing externalities can lead to more environmentally friendly choices 28:39 Paying a proper price generates revenue for investing in new technologies or compensating those affected. 32:33 Focus shifting towards reducing environmental impact in manufacturing phase 34:41 Nuclear power can be used to create synthetic liquid fuels. 38:20 Europe's strong push towards electric vehicles may face challenges in reality 40:22 UK manufacturing industry requests £7.7 billion in subsidies for 270,000 electric vehicle sales. 44:29 Transition to 100% electric vehicles requires massive investment and is currently unpalatable. 46:27 Shifting from private cars to public transport may require a greater increase in public transport provision. 50:25 Impact of electrification on European Auto industry competitiveness 52:20 China's advantage in EV supply chains to Europeans 56:18 Offshored CO2 production leading to misleading CO2 reduction claims. 58:24 Setting up inaccurate metrics leads to perverse incentives and undesirable outcomes. In this episode of Conversations on Climate, host Chris Caldwell of United Renewables sits down with Glada Lahn, Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House, to discuss the intersection of climate change, water scarcity, and migration in the Middle East. Glada shares her personal journey of focusing her career on the Middle East, initially drawn to the region's politics and Islamic art and architecture. She discusses her work on oil companies in the Middle East and how it sparked her interest in the issue of climate change and its impact on the oil and gas sector. The conversation delves into the importance of water as a shared resource and the potential for conflict and collaboration between countries in managing it. Glada also highlights the challenges of addressing water scarcity in the context of the Middle East, where many countries are highly dependent on food imports and are experiencing rapid urbanization. The conversation touches on the links between geopolitics and the environment and the impact of climate change on migration patterns. Glada emphasises the importance of considering the interconnectedness of these issues when addressing the challenges facing the Middle East. This episode provides a unique perspective on the complex issues of water scarcity, migration, and climate change in the Middle East, drawing on Glada's extensive experience and expertise in the region. "...there's no easy answer to this to improve things in a genuine way for the long term...not just papering over the cracks, because that won't work." "Water... is a shared resource that is extremely valuable. It's essentially more valuable than oil. But it can also spill across borders. If countries blame the country next door for the water shortage...and you've seen that between Iran and Afghanistan lately. And yet these rivers or these or shared aquifers, they represent really important opportunity for collaboration." Don't miss this insightful conversation on Conversations on Climate! In this episode, we sit down with economist and author Professor Sir Dieter Helm to discuss his vision for a sustainable economy. Helm asks the question, "what would it look like to live in a sustainable economy?" and offers a framework for understanding and addressing climate change. He argues that the current narrative around net-zero is unrealistic and that a more balanced approach is needed, one that takes into account the realities of the global economy and the need for sustainable economic growth. Helm emphasises the importance of focusing on capital assets, rather than just flows, and of considering the intergenerational impacts of our actions. He also discusses the need for a new kind of economic thinking that takes into account the realities of the 21st century, rather than relying on outdated models from the 20th century. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation on the challenges and opportunities of achieving a sustainable future. Dive into the future of sustainability and challenge your assumptions about human progress with ecological economist and futurist Marc Buckley. This captivating keynote from the Green Vision Summit & Expo in Malta explores the urgent need for a paradigm shift in how we approach environmental challenges and build a better future. Buckley begins by questioning the hype surrounding AI sentience, arguing that the focus on technological advancement often overshadows the importance of protecting our planet's biodiversity. He then poses a critical question that has remained unanswered for over 70 years: "What does a world that works for everyone look like?" Unpacking the limitations of outdated concepts like the triple bottom line, Buckley introduces the 3 fundamental principles of sustainability: economics, innovation, and futures thinking. He emphasises the crucial role of ecological literacy in developing regenerative solutions and fostering intergenerational justice. This video is a must-watch for anyone interested in:
In this video, economist and professor Alex Edmans discusses his latest book, "May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics and Studies Exploit Our Biases." Drawing on examples from economics, finance, and politics, Edmans reveals how confirmation bias, cherry-picking, and the misuse of data can result in misinformation and poor decision-making. He also offers practical advice for becoming better at sniffing out the truth and avoiding the pitfalls of disinformation. This conversation is a must-watch for anyone who wants to be an informed citizen in today's data-driven world. Edmans provides insights into the importance of critical thinking and statistical literacy and shares tips for how to evaluate the credibility of information and make evidence-based decisions. Whether you're a student, a professional, or simply someone who wants to stay informed, this video is a valuable resource for learning how to navigate the complex world of information and disinformation. …Readers are much more likely to remember a story than a statistic. So then how do I avoid the danger of hand-picking one story…so I wanted to write a book about misinformation, about how we need to make sure that we tame our biases and respond to evidence based on its scientific accuracy, and not whether we like these findings. …this highlights the importance of not being swayed by one particular study, even if it's published in the top scientific journals, because even editors and peer reviewers can make mistakes. …the solutions to misinformation are all within ourselves. This is a voice worth listening to. Don't miss out on another inspiring conversation on climate - Fighting Plastic Pollution in Ghana with Richmond Kennedy Quarco "It is very sad situation in Ghana because the plastic revolution just came less than 20 years ago. So 20 years ago, if you walked the beaches or coastlines of Ghana, it was as beautiful…but then the material came to us…all because of this convenience that the single use plastics comes with." "…and it is really, really, devastating seeing communities lose their livelihoods, seeing all this marine life wash ashore. and also the loss to tourism. Ghana's third biggest earner... so yes, we are really, really, really are at a tipping point over here in Ghana..." "I believe and think we should really involve the community in these issues and the solution finding process…Without involving the communities, really, we can never create a solution…" "Let the people understand the power that they have…We have the purchasing power. If you do not buy these products, they will stop manufacturing them….And I, I really believe the movement is growing." She also shares her experiences attending COP and her thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of international climate negotiations. " we need to pass the message back home, we will need the young people, the educated young people, the informed young people to be able to pass the message and to be, great, teachers when it comes to climate issues…" "And that is what it taught me: to learn that when you go to communities, you don't just teach, you also listen. So it's good that they are also involved in what is meant for them because they can they can also be part of the solution. And to learn that the communities like this … on the receiving end of the worst impacts of climate change, do not stop at being victims. They don't just end up being victims. They are also champions and on the forefront in trying to provide solutions in their own ways." In this video, Sean Kidney Co-founder and CEO of Climate Bonds Initiative discusses the importance of green bonds and financing the transition to a low-carbon economy. This conversation highlights the urgency of addressing climate change and the potential for green bonds to help fund renewable energy projects, improve energy efficiency, and promote sustainable agriculture. Kidney emphasises the need for clear standards and regulations to ensure the integrity of the green bond market and prevent greenwashing. This video makes a compelling case for the critical role that green bonds can play in financing the transition to a more sustainable future. With the global bond market worth $130 trillion, green and sustainable bonds currently make up just 4 trillion of that total. However, kidney believes that this market has the potential to grow at least ten times in the next decade, making green bonds the biggest asset class in the world. Happy New Year film fans! On the first episode of 2024, we are ringing in the new year with a discussion of one of the more recent underseen science fiction films - Prospect. Made for roughly $4 million, Prospect, could be best described as a sci-fi/western, with fantastic world building and powerful performances. Sadly, with even a tiny budget, Prospect failed to make an impact at the box office. Thankfully, Vinegar Syndrome released an amazing 4K edition complete with some amazing special features. With the help of this podcast, maybe Prospect will find a second life. Also, we spend a little time talking about our listeners' choices for the best/worst films of 2023.
